The great conversion
RokofAges75:
Thanks for the mentions, Steph; I'm flattered! :) You had some great picks in there as well and a couple of recommendation s I'll have to check out!
mare:
Thanks Steph! And i'm glad you mentioned Ground Zero because of reasons you'll see when I post my list! lol
mare:
This was a lot harder than I thought it would be. LOL But I have finally come up with my list. Sorry I was so longwinded.
1. Romance - Broken by Julie
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=5354
I know that this isn't really classified as a romance but for me this is as romance as I'll allow myself to get. What I loved so much about this story, besides how well written and angst ridden it is, is that there are so many layers. One of those layers is a romance layer. By the time it gets to that point in the story though, you are already so invested in the characters that it doesn't matter. Clare is a strong female character that can stand alone and that was enough to keep me interested in wanting to know more about her and also how her relationship with Nick would turn out. As someone who doesn't like romance and is trying to convert people who feel the same way as me, this would be a great read, although I don't know anyone who actually hasn't read it yet. LOL
2. Suspense - Snapshots by Jennifer Stevens
http://classics.backstreet-bauhaus.net/archive/jennifer.php?snapshots
Okay I know that all I do is gush about Ground Zero and how incredible it is so you're probably all WTF? about this pick, but the fact of the matter is, I knew someone would have it as one of their favorites already so I decided to go with another classic that some might not be as familiar with. This is a suspense story that is told through the eyes of 4 out of the 5 boys when Nick suddenly goes missing in Washington after leaving AJ at a nightclub. Jennifer no longer writes BSB fanfic. I'm not sure if she writes fanfic at all anymore but she is without a doubt, one of the BEST writers out there. Her descriptions of the boys emotions are awesome and the best part about this is it's a suspense without there really being any suspense if that makes sense. There are so many fantastic suspense stories out there from Ground Zero by Chaos, Mind Games by Amanda, Under Pressure by Izzy to Scared of Reality by Susan but if you want to read something completely different, check this one out. (and yes, that was me cheating to name more great recs lol)
3. Drama - Leaving on a Jetplane by Izzy
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9873
I miss Izzy in this fandom. Her writing style is so unique. This story isn't a sunshine and rainbows story by any means. From the get go she paints a very unhappy Nick and an AJ who is ambivalent about everything. It's pretty much about just the two of them and how they are coping with fame. It's full of raw emotion and angst when they both decide to run away from it all to decide if life is worth living. Garden by Louise, Where Can We Go From Here by Whitney and Inner Hell by Jenna were all close seconds! (yup, did it again! hehe)
4. Sci Fi - Yesterday's Blue Skies by Just Marina
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=2422
Maria and her lack of updates make this one tend to go unnoticed from time to time but if you take a moment and click on the link, you won't be disappointed. I am not a sci-fi fan and to be honest if Maria wasn't one of my favorite people on the planet, I probably wouldn't have ever even thought about giving it a try. Yes, I'm stubborn when it comes to my fanfic reading, which we all know and love about me. I have to use the word epic to describe it because like Broken, there are so many layers to this story with interesting twists and turns around every corner. The universe Maria creates for this one is a place I do not want to be in but I find I can't escape once I start reading it. Hopefully you'll feel the same way too.
5. Alternate Universe - On The Rails by Filiklepto
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9453
This is another story I would have never in a million years clicked on if I wasn't judging it for an award. It's not only an AU which I am not a fan of generally, but a historical one and it pretty much only features one of the boys for most of it. It's about Nick living his life as a musician and getting to his locations by hitching rides on trains, hobo style. Along the way he meets Carla who is also a fantastic musician and together they become an act. Because of the time period, to be taken seriously, Carla disguises herself as a mute boy named Carl. It's an awesome read and I hope it's finished one day soon!
6. Comedy - A Few Days in the Lives of the Backstreet Boys or Murphy MUST Have been Thinking about Nick when he wrote those Laws by Marly
http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/dreamcastle/marly01.htm
The reason this one is my pick: It's the only story I have ever read in fanfic land that has actually made me laugh so hard it brought tears to my eyes. Generally, I stay away from comedies because to me there's always a fine line between funny and stupid. This story is far from stupid. It's sweet and cute and just overall hilarious!
7. Visual - I have only read one of these and that was the very first fanfic I ever clicked on. I'm STILL trying to recover! Never again lol sorry.
8. Slash - I think no matter how old I get I am also going to be too immature to handle reading a BSB slash. For someone who doesn't like romance, and doesn't believe the boys are homosexual, it doesn't make sense for me to get into this genre at all.
9. Dramedy - Come Together by Izzy and Cecilia
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/cometogether.html
I agree with all that Julie already mentioned about this story. I think it's just an overall warm, fuzzy story which at times can be intense but most of the time you just feel like you're there in the moment with the guys as they are becoming the Backstreet Boys. This story really helped me get to know the guys when I first started out as a BSB fan and really didn't know much about them. I felt like I was watching a documentary.
10. A story that might not necessarily fit one of the categories above -- Finding Brotherhood by Mersey
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/mersey/fb.html
When people ask me to describe this story I have the hardest time. There is a common theme with most of my recs and it's layers. This one is the king of layering. There is SO much going on that it would take a long time to even begin to explain. The reason it landed here is because it could pretty much fall into every category above. Long story short, it's mainly about the bond that the guys share told through an intricately woven plot. lol Mersey is an incredible writer and we miss her in fanfic land. If I had to pick one story that bests describes why it would be this one. Check it out!
11. Best overall fanfic - Can You Keep a Secret by Kat and Amy
http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/brain_candy/secrettabcon.html
Love love LOVE this story! I'm not really a person who will go back and reread things a ton of times but this is one of the exceptions to that rule. When I feel like I'm losing the 'guys' I tend to go back and read this one. It revitalizes me. It's a warm, fuzzy story with a dramatic flare. It mainly centers around Brian and Nick and the special bond they share. To me, it's the best Frick and Frack story out there. All the guys are very important and featured as well. It's a medical drama set shortly after the time that Brian had his heart surgery.
12. short story - Documentaries by Izzy
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/documentaries.html
If I didn't pick Can You Keep a Secret as my favorite overall, this one would have been the second choice. It's a short story but in Izzy land it's not really all that short lol It's a dark story told through AJ's POV about a documentary Nick was making shortly before he has a car accident. Excellent read!
13. Action - Seven Days by Refuse 2 Lose
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=6728
This story has it all. Drama, comedy, and of course, action. All five guys are equally important and the storyline really keeps you wanting to read more and more. I read this story in one sitting which is very rare for me and my short attention span. When it was done I was sad, but then that sadness turned to joy when I saw there was a sequel. On The Run by Mersey was my close second. Both having to do with bus mishaps but turning into so much more!
14. Fantasy - I have read a few but I can't honestly say any of them were memorable enough for me to recommend them to you. I'm not sure what would make me click on a fantasy and read it all the way through with excitement. If and when it happens, I'll let you know.
15. Series - Swollen Issues by Jenna and Swenglish
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=5638
This was the first series I ever read in fanfic land. Swollen Issues was one of the first stories I ever read as a new BSB fan. It saved me from never wanting to click on a fanfic ever again after the visual debacle. The title didn't help mind you lol I was so excited reading it, I stayed up for hours just wanting to know what happens next. Jenna and Swenglish really take you for a ride on the angst bus with this one. They are so good with the medical stuff that you actually start thinking it's real. When it was all over I was sad and to me that's the mark of a great series.
RokofAges75:
I modified my post with the new categories, and I see I picked some of the same ones you did, Mare! That obviously means they are awesome, to be double-recommended LOL.
Also, I'm glad you mentioned "Finding Brotherhood"; that's another one I consider to be one of those warm-and-fuzzy KTBSPA type group stories. I haven't read it in forever, but I enjoyed it a lot when I did.
And thanks for the Broken mention - I laughed at the category you put it in, but I'm flattered it's the one "romance" you'll read. :)
Carter-Orange:
I'll have to check out some those recommendation s.
