Question of the Day - Part 4
Pengi:
Like everyone else is saying, the characters have to be strong for me to make it through any story -fan fic or not- and if they aren't strong, I simply lose interest. I gotta know a little quirk or some secret key ot their personalities to get me invested into a character before I'll hang on for the ride. If I open up the chapter and the writing is choppy or nothing but dialogue, I'll close out. I'm kind of obnoxious about the dialogue thing when it comes to a story. I like a balance. If I see every single paragraph opening with a quotation mark, I'm gonna assume there's not a balance of dialogue and detail. I have a few stories I revisit now and then. I use my "favorites" on AC as a bookmarker so I remember what stories I'm in the process of reading. I never clean it out, though, so I have stories I read years ago still in there, lol. I rarely re-read any story, fan fic or not, so I don't really have a list of ones that I have reread... I'd say the Coaster series would be one I'd read again in the future.
When I write a chapter, I pay attention to the page count on Wordpad. Whatever the first chapter ends up being is what I try to average the rest of them to look like. For Borrowed Time for example each chapter ranges between 2,500-3,500 words, or 10-13 pages double-spaced on Wordpad. I just like the chapters to have rhythm, and length can help with that. But I do also like the chapters to break at good points so as was already said I'll go long or short to accoodate that. There's also times when I have opening lines for a particular scene that I really want to have be the first line of a chapter, and I'll purposely lengthen a scene in a prior chapter to bump that opening line onto the next chapter. A lot of my random Nick banter gets placed this way. I have an entire folder in my fan fiction hard drive dedicated to just little notepad documents of stupid questions and tirades for Nick to bring up in these sorts of situations that will allow me to build an entire scene out of thin air to fill in some extra space. ;)

I have another question too:
When/if you got published did you/would you remove the fan fiction version of the story from the website or leave it published in its original state?

I think I probably would, just so that no one would ever find it. I have removed the fan fic version of the original novel I reworked off of AC, but that was more of a cleaning house move than anything else, since I was never going to continue with it and didn't want it sitting under my account incomplete forever. Not because I actually think my original novel will get published anytime soon... because it's not even done lol
RokofAges75:
I would if it was essentially the same story... like an AU that I'd just changed the names on to de-Backstreetize it before publishing. If I was expecting people to pay money for it, I wouldn't want the free version still available LOL.
If it was one that I had completely rewritten and changed, I'd probably leave the old fanfic version up unless I was required to remove it by the publisher or something. With a story like Broken, I see the OF version looking SO different from the original that no one besides my fanfic readers would even make the connection.

The ones that I've published on Amazon are ones that aren't based around them being Backstreet Boys or AU so BSB doesn't exist. In fact, in one, Backstreet Boys were mentioned ONCE, so that was very easy to edit. I don't think I'd try to publish one that's based solely on them being a Backstreet Boy or NKOTB member like in "Fearless" or "IWBB."
