That should help. Even if you just had a rough outline you could give yourself the freedom to just type away but you should kind of know how things are going to progress. Otherwise it's easy to lose track and kind of be all over the place with the way things happen.

An outline definitely helps me. I didn't used to be an outline person, but I've found that really trying to plan out at least the main events of the story and then tie them together helps me keep the focus.

I used to have a general outline in my head, and I thought I'd always follow it, but, now, I find myself having a hard time following it, which means my stories are ending up not at all where I wanted them to be :( I agree that an outline (a written one) is definitely great, and it keeps you on track. Also, if you have an idea that you want to put in your story down the line and you're afraid you'll forget it, you can always stick it into your outline.

aww, Yay Teri! I love you! And Welcome to the board hun! You should definitely look at some on the older threads in the author iquisition board. Tere's some helpful chatter in there and also in the Alias board. Great character development stuff.
