Title: You can do it!!
Post by: mare on January 15, 2011, 06:28:11 AM
Since AC has a ton of motivational threads for people wanting to lose weight (no pun intended haha), I thought why don't we also have one for people who are having a hard time in general with writing their stories?

So many of us like to blame our 'muses' for not letting us write but usually it has to do with something lacking whether it be an idea, a chink in character or plot development or just maybe losing your inspiration for whatever reason.

Here's a good place to post what's going on with you and where others can help cheer you on or maybe throw some ideas your way.

So, have at it!

:)

My problem doesn't seem to be the ideas, it's getting them out of my head and writing them.  Like with Rewind, I know where it's going, and I'm currently writing the next chapter, but it doesn't always write how I want it to write and I end up deleting large chunks of it and writing it again.  Maybe I just don't have the writing skills to get my ideas out.

This thread is a good idea :)

I'm having a major block on Figured You Out...its killing me right now. I want the next chapter to be the other boys but not sure where to go, I don't think I want to jump into Nick being rescued or anything just yet. I'm just lost...

Tracy, they figured out that Valerie took him didn't they?  What about if they do some snooping around where she lived with her Mum?  They could talk to her friend to see whether they can find out any clues as to where she took Nick.

Sorry if my suggestions are crap, they just popped into my head after reading your post :)

ooh those are all good ideas!

It's hard when you see that maybe a story is coming to an end but you're not ready for that to happen just yet, but like Steph said, Tracy, I think there's still a lot of angles you have to play with since the guys are all willing to go all Hardy Boys for this!

And Steph, I do the same thing as you. I'll write full on pages of things and then decide I don't like it and delete it all. LOL

My motivation lacks when it comes to actually opening up word. It takes me forever to do that but once I do and actually start writing, it happens quickly. I find I have to walk away from it for a few hours at a time though. Like now, i'm taking a break.

I never had to do that before. When I first started writing I could sit here and write until the entire chapter was finished. I kind of have forced myself to slow down, step away and then reread what I wrote before I continue. I think it's actually helped with the overall quality of writing on this story anyway but it's also detracted me from writing and given me some major blockages too.

I've just actually deleted the chapter of Rewind I just wrote, I didn't like it, even though I spent ages writing it!  So I ended up churning out another chapter of my Nick romance instead, lol.

I think you're on to something with that idea, Steph! I will see if I can work with any of it! Thanks ladies! I guess maybe since I been sick my thoughts are clogged up, hopefully I can work something out.

Hope you feel better soon and work out the story :)

I'll tell you my problem today...the kids keep distracting me!  Maybe when they've gone to bed I'll be able to make some progress.

When I get frustrated and can't write. I will put music on and just write. Sometimes I line in a song will jump out at me and take me where I know I need to go. The great thing is it usually comes from a song I never thought would  give me a great idea. Like sometimes a line in a Broadway showtune will get me thinking and wow I have a place to start.

Freewriting is also a good idea for getting thoughts out about what you want to write. Take 5 or 10 minutes and write about what you want to happen in the chapter. The thing is you can't stop writing. Anything that pops in your head goes on the paper. When you are done, you can look back and take the parts that you know will fit they way you want. I did this a lot in high school.

@Steph & Mare:
I'm so jealous that you guys can delete your writing!  One of my big problems is that once I think of a passage, I hate to delete it.  A lot of the time, I'll copy-paste it to the very bottom of the word document to save it for later >_<  That's how I am in real life too, a total pack rat who hates to throw anything away.

At the moment, I'm having some trouble with an extended dialog/fight scene.  I can't tell if the pace of the argument is progressing naturally or if Nick and Carla's emotions are too sudden.  I think I need to find some barbie dolls to make them act out the scene for me!

I agree about music providing inspiration.  I wrote a short Take That story after listening to Muse's 'Resistance' and although it's not a story that I would expect to be read on AC, I'm quite happy with the way it came out.

Hahaha, I like the idea of making the dolls act out the scene.

Hope you manage to work it out though, I'm sure it will be great as you're a fantastic writer :)

I'm pleased to report I may have a new chapter today or tomorrow, I kind of let Brian and AJ tell me what they wanted to do lol so far I like it. When I write I usually go with what I write the first time, I haven't had to delete anything...it usually ends up working itself out. Thanks for the help!

As a lot of you know, English isn't my native language. When I first started writing fanfic (not BSB) was when I was 14 (in 2007). My English sucked WAY more than now but back then I didn't seem to struggle to find the right words and how to describe certain things as much as I do now! Sure, I had to look up translations a lot more than now, but I have no idea how to explain a certain situation or when I write dialogue, what would be the most natural thing to say! I also get stuck on ideas & inspiration. Music is a really good tip, that works for me too. But not as much as it used to. When I have an idea, I try to write it down, but I have simply no idea where to start! I've got so many issues with writing right now that I took a break until I have figured things out. When I saw this thread I could almost hear an angel choir LMAO!

Anyway, I guess I'm also a little too worried about how my English comes out. I've considered writing down my ideas and/or chapters in Dutch first, because I know how to word things better in my own language, of course. But the thing is, even in my own language I don't know where to start! But when I explain it to someone, it goes much better. Writing became very frustrating LOL.

I guess I also worry too much about the amount of reviews. I recently read someone saying that review count shouldn't matter, otherwise writing isn't fun anymore. I realized I started to write for the reviews, not for myself. That's the first thing that I will think of once I start writing. :)

Meh, I hope you get my problems. I've got a lot of frustration built up inside LOL

Oh, I do that as well. I am a qiueen of copy and pasting things and using them later on in a chapter or someties in a different story all together. I also keep paragrpahs down at the bottom as well and wait to see if I can use it later on.

As far as acting out scenes. I ALWAYS do that! lmao minus the barbie dolls. I sit here and say the dialogue out loud and another thing I do when I write action sequences is to really move in the way I want the characters to move and then it's easier to describe.

I am looking forward to reading that fight scene lol

I totally get the English isn't your first language dilemma. I give you and everyone else a lot of credit for writing in a language other than your first. I used to help beta for a few people who needed help with the english and what I always told them was it doesn't matter about any of that. If you have a great story and believeable characters, no one will care about the small mistakes they may find throughout due to the language barrier. I can usually tell when someone is writing not in their own tongue and very rarely will that detract me from reading it if it's a good story.

Mersey, Maria and Swenglish (going back awhile for Swenglish lol) are three great examples of that.

As far as reviews. I think even though we all say not to write for reviews, we do all look at them as a barometer of how well the story is doing. I should put that in the unpopular opinion thread because I really do believe that's true lol But reviews can also freeze you from writing if you start letting how many reviews dictate how your story is going. Not everyone who reads reviews. Just remember that!

Good to hear you'll have a new chapter Tracy!

I often keep paragraphs I've written too, they are down at the bottom of my word doc for Rewind.

I'm almost finished the next chapter now that I've had the chance to concentrate on it.

Yay to Both of you Tracy and Steph!

I am about halfway through a new Lurks chapter myself. This is the point of the chapter where my characters start having a mind of their own and wanting to do something I dind't have planned! This is where I need to take yet another break!  lol

I am the same way!  I can only delete once I finish the chapter and know I'm not going to use those passages, and even then, if I still like them, I put them into my outline in case I can use them later in the story somewhere.

I write really slowly because I am constantly revising and editing as I go, but once it's written, I don't like to revise more than just a few minor tweaks and proofreading.

I totally agree with this!  I may be a Grammar Nazi, but that's only targeted at people who have spoken English their whole lives and gone through 12-ish years of school in English and STILL don't know or care how to write coherently in the language.  I can overlook the minor mistakes you find in a story written by someone who has learned English as a second or third language.

One of my favorite series, Swollen Issues, was co-written by Swenglish, and even though I could usually tell which parts were written by her because the wording was sometimes awkward, it never detracted from my love of those stories.  Like Mare said, if the plot and characters and everything else is there, the little mistakes don't matter.

Once I've written the chapter, I go over it and maybe add/delete things, check for spelling (but no doubt some typos still get through occasionally) and then post it.  If I do delete something like a whole chapter, I'll take the bits I was happy with and keep them at the bottom of the page, and also any other ideas that pop into my head which may fit into the story somewhere.

My main problem with my stuff is the fork in the road dilemma. I have an extreme difficulty with choosing one way and staying on it. With my first story that I ever wrote I remember the ideas just flowing through me. I still to this day have no idea where my ideas for The Risk came from. Plus I guess it helped that I had tons of reviews that told me how I was doing even though I already knew. God, that was so long ago.

I have this thing where I used to write out an outline before I wrote the chapter if I was ever blocked. Anyone ever tried that before? Basically like an overview of what I'm planning to write. I did that recently for truth and once I figured it was enough for a chapter or two I stopped and then started writing. Was kind of weird because as I was writing my head totally took a new direction. One I hadn't planned on doing. How odd is that? Does that ever happen to anyone here. Oh yeah, and I'm bilingual too. I spoke Russian and English around my house since I was 4. Sometimes the English gets jumbled up.

I never use outlines. I know a lot of people on here do though. It seems to stump more tha help me for some reason. I do tend to change direction within a story several times as I go as well. My endings usually happen how I intended them to be but the getting their never goes as expected. I guess it keeps me on my toes lol

I find that I usually know how the story will end, but it's a bit of a magical mystery tour getting there, lol.  Sometimes I might have a rough idea of what'll happen along the way, but usually it's a surprise to me.

I do outline for most of my stories, but what kind of outline I make and how detailed it gets depends on the story.  I have some outlines that are chapter by chapter or part by part, for Secrets of the Heart and my two collaborations, but usually I'm more of a timeline person.

My Curtain Call outline is basically a timeline, with a bunch of research at the bottom.  The way I'm writing that story is, I'm God of the story, and I get to decide what situations to put my characters in.  But since they have free will, they get to decide how to react.  So I have various points along the way that are planned out and set in stone, but how the characters get there and what happens in between is decided chapter by chapter, as I'm writing.

Then I have Guilty Roads, with no outline whatsoever, only an idea in my head of where I'm going with it.  That scares me a little, but we'll see how it goes.

I remember how outlines and trailer videos were all I had. I've been around the fan fic world for a long time now and I discovered that outlines are pretty useless when you're actually writing. Its strange how the ideas just change on the spot when you wrote a whole treatment for like 3 chapters. I'm always like, "oh shit why did I even bother?"

I'm late to the party...but great thread idea, Mare.  I know I am lacking motivation!

My biggest issue is time.  I have inspiration, even dialouge flooding into my head...but, I never have time to sit down and write when I am ready/able to write.  I have a husband, two kids, a full time job and am constantly on the go!  When I do get a chance to sit down, I am usually wiped out and only have a few minutes.  Most of my time online is spent via my iPhone.  Back when I was regulary writing and updating Casual, I would stay up very late and write write write after everyone went to bed, but since baby #2 has arrived, I need my sleep more!

I am an outliner...typ ically, I have three scenes in each chapter and I do a little blurb about what the content of each scene will be.  I am constantly changing my outline.  I save stuff for later a lot of the time too, as needed.

Regarding story status, I have just a few chapters left of Casual and I have written the beginnings of a new story...still fleshing out ideas and working on the outline, but I think it has potential.  I can't work on two things at once, I've learned, so once Casual is done, and if I can find time, I am hoping to devote some to my new thing.

Then I have Guilty Roads, with no outline whatsoever, only an idea in my head of where I'm going with it.  That scares me a little, but we'll see how it goes.

It's weird how I've grown as a writer.

At first, I never outlined anything. I had an idea and just went with it. I'd sometimes knew how it would end, sometimes not. It probably explains my ADD back in the day though with 50 stories going lol. I mean I still have a few at the same time, but I've gotten WAY better over the years about sticking to it.

For collabs, it's like you said, we have chapters planned, but we've definitely tweaked it when something called for it. It's a chapter by chapter, but flexible, especially if the characters decide to throw a wrench in the works LOL. I feel with collabs you need outlines, or things go awry way too easily.

For my own now? I'm more of a timeline person too. I know with "Remember Me This Way", all I have is a set list of events I need to happen and the time frame. After I've already written/posted the chapter, then I'll add it to the event on the timeline just so I can reference back to it if I need to. It's like you said, sort of playing God lol. There's events that happen, but there's definitely free will. And there's been times Nick's decided he's going to change things up, and I went with it. But I do know exactly how I'm going to end it.

Oddly, "Walked Out Of My Dreams" has a chapter by chapter...well it's not even a concrete outline, more like who's POV, and what may happen. It's already changed once lol and it's not even that far along. But I do know how that one will go and end. :)

So I guess it depends on the story anymore, but there's usually some guideline just so I don't mix up anything.

I hate filler; I think that's the hardest thing to write!  Like Mare, I would ask yourself, what do you really need to write to get from Point A to Point B?  Do you really need anything?  If so, is it just filler?  That's where I get stuck, when I know I need something to help the transition, but don't have anything specific in mind... filler.  Ugh.

I hate filler!!  >:(

It is exactly where I am in Running Up That Hill and that's why it's taking me so long to churn out updates. (and how I ended up caught up with myself, because I was being so good at staying ahead) It is the lull part in the middle-ish of the story where nothing is happening and I feel like i'm being overly repetitive and boring.

I dunno, I just feel like not enough stuff is happening, and I need to make something happen. Because seven more chapters of this might be impossible for me to write.

I hope you manage to decide which way to take in the story Mare :)  I'm sure whichever way it goes, we'll all love it!

I wish I had to go in me to write today.  I've opened a word doc and typed up about 100 words and that's it!  Instead I watched four episodes of Supernatural, which were really good by the way :)

That happened to me yesterday, Mare! I was so indecisive and I typed up a whole chapter that was the complete opposite direction of where I wanted the story to go.

And then I re-wrote it all because I hated the new direction and decided what I had originally planned was a better route. Nick didn't win this time, lol

It was literally one of those things and you'll see what I mean when you read the chapter where if person A enters the room this will happen but if person B enters the room than this will happen and after I went back and forth about a billion times I went with person A lol

Glad you're enjoying Supernatural Steph! LOL

I found the release date for Millennium and all that stuff but I wasn't a fan back then (Yeah, I know) so i'm unclear as to whether or not Brian and Leighanne were a couple when the album was released or what the status was for Kristin and Kevin? I just need to know if I have to factor them into this story or not so any thoughts would be mega helpful!

Brian and Leighanne were a couple and had been for a couple of years (they met in 1997 on the set of ALAYLM).  Kevin and Kristin got married just over a year later, so they had to have been a couple too.  I know they'd known each other since his Disney World days and were kind of on and off again, but they must have been on by then.

ah okay lol I wasn't sure when that video with Leighanne happened. Well, I can have some fun with this then. :) Thanks!!

And they were no longer with Lou by this time, right?

Nope, they left Lou just before Millennium, that was their first album with The Firm.

That's what I thought. Thanks guys! :)

I was looking it up cause I couldn't remember for sure (you're right, Rose), and I found this Vanity Fair article about Lou.  I'm sure this must have been all over LD when it came out a few years ago, but I don't know if I ever read it in its entirety.  It's long, but there are some interesting parts.  Mostly, it's just really creepy, especially this page:  http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2007/11/pearlman200711?currentPage=5

If you ever wanted to go with the idea about Nick and Lou, there's something to go off of.

I remember that article, and man, I was incredibly disturbed.

I remember that one too. That's one of the reasons I wanted to do a Lou Nick story in the first place. That guy is a creep!

I actually never read this article but eerily I started about Lou abusing Nick, but never got far and never posted it.

I think perverts like Lou should be locked up and the key thrown away!

Just read the article :( OMG poor Nick! I wonder what happened if it was so bad they couldn't talk about it. That guy is a pervert and should be locked up! He always did look kind of creepy to me!

Ugh, I read that back when I was researching Lou for his AU counterpart in On the Rails. What a creeper!  Let's just say I was inspired to make him a total scumbag >:(

I have a feeling that one day the truth will come out. I bet if someone were to flat out ask Kevin now, he'd tell it like it was!

Okay so I could use some help with Jizzle Of Oz. Howie is giving me lots of problems. I want to make the lion somewhat like the movie but make him Howiefied. I don't want to just make him wink and stuff but it should be funny? I'm also playing with Forces Of Nature. I threw in a female character and I DO NOT want it to be a romance, but I don't know how to get around that without killing her off LOL

Howie should make references to not being a gay lion since he always seems obsessed with people not thinking that he's gay? lol as far as a female, i'm having the same issue with my story. It's tough but if you make her strong enough she can stand on her own wothout the aide of a boy lol

Okay so now I have gotten stuck again on Jizzle Of Oz. I am on the part of the movie where they run through the field of flowers and fall asleep, but not sure if I want to keep it in there, and if I do...what to do with it. I could also use some ideas on how to make Emerald City AJ-fied
Title: Re: You can do it!!
Post by: Carter-Orange on March 21, 2011, 07:25:06 AM
To AJify the Emerald City, how about everyone wearing black?  Like that film Equilibrium where they all seem to be wearing one colour and everything is very uniform, but you could add things like black eyeliner and nails.

Not sure if this is the right thread to post in!  Does anyone else forget what they've written earlier in the story and have had to read back to see what they wrote?  I'm at that point right now.  I can't remember if I wrote the guys wives into it in the beginning, or whether I left them out.  I know that I don't usually write the real wives/girlfriends into my stories though.  I'm so useless, lol.  I'll have to re-read it so that I don't write something wrong.  Shame because I'm on a roll tonight too.

I ALWAYS have to do that Steph lol and the problem with me is I don't have the attention span needed to even read my own stuff so I end up just not updating. I so fail!

This happens to me all the time too. It is really annoying, but usually I find reading back through my older chapters helps me to get motivated to write an update.

Good luck on writing, girls! AC has been so dead lately :(

I do that a lot LOL.  Especially if it's not the story I've been working on regularly.  That's why I'm trying to get back down to writing just one or two stories at a time; it's just too hard to keep up with more than that.

I always have to go back and reread because I can't remember the small details of what's already happened. If I don't reread I end up making mistakes in continuity.

I imagine that having a bit of time off this summer (ie the whole month of July lol) will give me a chance to do some writing - hopefully!

I have to sometimes for little things, such as an original characters birthday or something. Sometimes if I'm not in the mood to write, but need to, I'll go back and read what I have written to get inspired to write.

I know there's a thread to ask people to beta read your story, but last time I checked it was pretty dead there so I'll do it here lol

So, does anyone want to beta read my story? I haven't written much yet, I just wanna know if it's a good start and if there's any awkward English. It would be nice to have someone I can send my chapters to for constructive criticism once in a while. :)

I just read my post on the first page of this thread where I said I can't write in Dutch. Well, shoot me, I am writing in Dutch right now and translating it to English and it goes pretty well. Just a lack of inspiration and I'm too insecure. :/

FYI, I want to post this story when I've finished it so I know I won't let my readers down. I'm going to do that with all of my stories from now on. It might take a long time before I've finished one, but when I start posting it, there won't be huge gaps between updates. :)
