Here's a survey for you to fill out! lol

1) Tell us one thing about your story that no one else knows?

2) How long did it take you to write this entire story?

3) Give us a summary different from the one you have posted on AC, with a few more spoilers to make people tune in.

4) If you could cast this story as a movie who would play the main roles and why?

5) Have you ever thought of giving up on the story and if you did what made you continue to work on it?

6) What was your writing process? (Outline, make it up as you go along, the characters wrote it, I am Tonja and plagerized lol)

7) Who was your favorite character in this story and why?

8 ) You had to know this was coming, who was your least favorite?

9) Are all the boys in this one? If not why did you choose to exclude them?

10) If we like this story...then we'd love what story? (Could be by you or someone else) and obviously tell us why lol

This caught me by, complete, surprise! I had never expected any of my stories to be featured. It's a very nice surprise, though. Thank you!

1) Tell us one thing about your story that no one else knows?
Um...well...I guess one thing would be that a lot of Baylee's bad attitude moments are loosely based on my step daughter. She has got one hell of an attitude. This is how I got the name for the story, too. We got into an argument, once, about how long pregnancy lasts. She just KNEW it only lasted 7 months and I tried telling her that the average pregnancy is 36-40 weeks (hello...I've had a kid...I should know) but she started screaming, telling me I was wrong and didn't know what I was talking about...this is when I was like "Fine...I guess that's life, according to Kierston." A few days later, I came up with the idea for this story and 'Life According to Baylee' seemed to fit.

2) How long did it take you to write this entire story?
I started writing it in April of '08...so I haven't even been working on it for a year, yet.

3) Give us a summary different from the one you have posted on AC, with a few more spoilers to make people tune in.
Brian and Leighanne Littrell were killed in a horrible car accident when their son, Baylee, was only 9 years old. Baylee is now 15 and under the legal guardianship of, one of, the other Boys. Follow Baylee through life's unsuspecting twists, as he struggles to deal with a rocky relationship between him and his guardian, a family member on drugs, a little cousin that loses his mother, the threat of a custody battle, the pressures of high school, and so much more. Will his relationships with Nick, AJ, Howie and Kevin stand strong, or will he push away the men he has always called his uncles? This...is life...accordi ng to Baylee.

4) If you could cast this story as a movie who would play the main roles and why?
Uuuum...I have no idea! If I think of anything, I'll get back to you, lol.

5) Have you ever thought of giving up on the story and if you did what made you continue to work on it?
Yep...many times. My readers help to keep me motivated. Plus, I'm pretty attached to the characters, so I can't leave them alone for too long. LOL.

6) What was your writing process? (Outline, make it up as you go along, the characters wrote it, I am Tonja and plagerized lol)
The characters write it...all the way, lol. I may have ideas that get weaved into the story (such as the current Ashley/Nick/Kevin thing) but I never actually outline anything.

7) Who was your favorite character in this story and why?
Yikes...I guess I'll have to say Baylee. I love his character and how his moods change. I have become very attached to the kid, lol.

8 ) You had to know this was coming, who was your least favorite?
Anyone who has read LATB probably knows this is coming...Kevin . I, kind of, took him WAY out of character. He is actually the complete opposite of what Kevin is, in real life.

9) Are all the boys in this one? If not why did you choose to exclude them?
Brian is the only one, not in the story...but yet he, kind of, is...because of his journal. The reason Brian isn't actually in the story is because, if he was, there wouldn't be a story. LOL.

10) If we like this story...then we'd love what story? (Could be by you or someone else) and obviously tell us why lol
"Not So Bad" by Ashley (sweet18_2003) http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=4563 This is another story about a bratty teen Backstreet son. lol. Michael has a way worse attitude than Baylee though. At any rate, it's a well written story and if you like LATB, I am sure, you'll love NSB.

I really like this story because it pulls you in, it makes you think of your own teen years and all the issues that came with that stage in life. Like I've said before, we have no idea what Baylee will be like, but it makes you feel like he's real. So great job Crys!!! Now update I'm hooked!!! *Snicker*  :D ;)

Oh wow your a feature story of the month on AC...you must be very happy. Your out of the cli...(nevermind I wont talk out of my ass) I'm very happy for you congrats Kristal.

I know I haven't read the whole story, but what I have read is really good and I'm loving Baylee. I promise to catch up and leave reviews soon.  ;D ;D

Question for you...
Did you pick Nick to be the guardian, because of his relationship with Brian?
Did you consider any of the other guys at some point?

I'm not even going to ask the last of that sentence...be good DJ!!! Hey those are good questions by the way *Wink*

Ok so Kristal...I'm baaaaaaack!! Well I have a question for you and although we talk ALL the time, I dont think I've asked this yet?

Why did you choose Kevin to be the bad guy in this story?

Ok maybe two...

Are Morgan and Baylee ever going to smooch it...darn it??

Ha...ha...you know I've been asking you the second question since I started reading.  ;)

LMAO...I'm just as shocked, as you, DJ! But, thank you, I am rather happy.

Now, for your questions...

I chose Nick for a couple reasons. First of all, he's kind of the last one you would expect, seeing as he isn't the most mature, of the group. Secondly, he WAS really close with Brian, and thirdly, I imagine that Nick is probably really close, to Baylee, in real life. Nick is an overgrown kid, himself, and I can picture him playing trains, singing Veggitale songs, having play gun fights, and bonding really well, with Baylee. That's why I figured I could build on that, to make an interesting story line.

I never did consider any of the other guys, because when I first thought of the idea...it was literally of Brian dieing and leaving Baylee in Nick's care. Since that was the original thought, I never strayed, from it.

Ok so Kristal...I'm baaaaaaack!! Well I have a question for you and although we talk ALL the time, I dont think I've asked this yet?

Ha...ha...you know I've been asking you the second question since I started reading.  ;)

Why did I choose Kevin?...well...I guess he just drew the short stick, lol. All the guys are taken a little out of character, in this story. Howie and AJ are carefree pranksters that sneak Baylee out, in the middle of the night, to roam condemned 'haunted' insane asylums. Nick is serious and doesn't accept any funny business (at least, for the first 15, or so, chapters). Kevin was taken the most out of character, being the complete ass...there's really no specific reason, for it, that's just how it happened. *shrug*

Aaaah, the oh so common Baylee/Morgan question. LOL. Do you really think I'm going to answer that? If I haven't answered yet, there must be a reason, for it! You'll just have to keep reading, Er.

Ok...next question!

I think the reason it does work so well is that you see them each having characteristic s/playing roles that you wouldn't normally associate with them.  I think that sometimes situations bring out different sides of people.

I can't think of any questions so I thought I would just put in my two-cents :)

I find this very out of place, and would like to ask what you meant, since you obviously meant to mention it otherwise you would have just backspaced.

But on to positive vibes.  :)

Anywho, congrats Kristal. I don't appear much in the featured thread section much, but that's cause it always makes me feel bad that I don't read like I used to lol.

So guys, what makes LATB such a draw in? Why would I enjoy it? Make me wanna read it, like Kelly's been saying lol.

...que.

If being featured had anything to do with cliques it would be the most messed up group of people ever, if you look at who has been since the get-go lol

Congrats Kristal! I have to admit I'm not very good at reading (or writing for that matter) lately, so I haven't yet "picked up" LATB though I have been meaning to! It's definitely a different concept.

Why did you pick Baylee and not create a fictional child?

Yay! I love when these threads are nice and active and the people who have read the story participate, it make's Oprah's job a lot easier. LOL

I do have one question for you and I hope no one has asked it yet. How did you decide who would take care of Baylee after Brian died? Did you ever go back and forth with different scenerios in your head like giving him to Brian's parent's?

Well...I kinda already explained this a little...but the idea came to me, at work. The original idea was of Baylee being left in Nick's care, after something happened to Brian and Leighanne. Seriously...th at's exactly what I thought and I was like "Holy shit! I don't think anything like that has ever been done!" So, I never even thought of using a fictional child or leaving Baylee with anyone else. I stuck with that concept and just built on it.

Sorry, I looked for that answer but didn't see it lol Cat's out of the bag, I guess now you all know I can't read :P

Did you ever worry that readers would get nitpicky (like they do with many stories) and start pointing out the legalities of appointing a guardian that isn't a relative? Or did you figure that creative licence would make people happy enough if they were concerned?
Title: Re: Featured story of the Month for January 2009: Life According to Baylee
Post by: alota_cookin on January 06, 2009, 08:49:27 PM
It's mentioned fairly early on, that Brian and Leighanne had a will, that appointed Nick to take guardianship, if anything ever happened to them. As you get a little more into the story, Baylee finds Brian's journal. Baylee continues to read the journal (it becomes a pretty big part of the story) and it eventually reveals the reasons behind that decision.

So, I think at the beginning a got a couple questions, as to why Nick was the guardian, but after the will was mentioned, no one seemed to question it any more.

Yay!  I love this story  ;D
I've read it on and off for quite a while when I've had the chance and the chapters never fail to tug at the heartstrings and pull the reader in to the life Baylee now leads as a teen.

I can't imagine how difficult a situation like that would be for everyone involved, but I think you've done a great job at portraying the trials and tribulations.

I look forward to reading more of this story in the coming weeks  :)

As far as a prequel...I haven't really thought about that. Sequel, though, that's a strong possibility. I have some ideas but, it really just depends on if I can develop those ideas enough, to warrant another story.

As far as a prequel...I haven't really thought about that.

You should!  All of this Ashley stuff and the mystery surrounding that are definitely peaking my interest...and if you were to include the actual accident and how it all went down with Nick getting Baylee...that would be really interesting to read!  I see mucho potential!

If Brian was able to write a note to Nick from beyond the grave, what would he say about the way Baylee was raised? Write us a little letter as dead Brian :)

Alrighty...I had to do a lot of thinking, on this, but here's my best shot. I hope that it is what you were looking for!

Hey Nicky-

I know this might seem a bit odd, to you, but I was granted permission to contact you. Don’t ask me how I pulled it off…because you know I ain’t got a clue! Doesn’t THAT remind you of our early Backstreet years? We always scored extra breaks and special treatment…but never understood how we managed to do it. Anyways…that’s not what this letter is for.

I’ve seen you be, way too, hard on yourself these past 6 1/2 years. Man, I can’t even believe that it’s been that long! You’ve been second guessing yourself, Nick, and that’s something I never wanted you to do. I know that our accident, and gaining Baylee’s custody, sent a shockwave through your life. I’d say that I’m sorry…but the truth, of the matter, is that I’m not sorry, in the least. I was confident in my choice then, and I still am, now.

You and Baylee have been through a lot, over the years, and you’ve never bailed, on him. I’m very proud of how Baylee has grown up and matured. Sure, he’s a little brat, sometimes, but, if you recall…you were quite the little brat, yourself! Don’t get me wrong…I wouldn’t condone some of the things that he’s done or said…but, overall and aside from your language, I think you’ve handled it all pretty well.

You need to loosen up, though, Nick. Maybe you don’t see it…but, sometimes his attitude stems from you being so uptight and over protective. Now, I appreciate you taking care of my boy and protecting him as best as you can, but, like you told Kevin, I never wanted you to turn into him…he’s a kill joy. Please go back to your old self, because it would make things a lot easier and much happier, for both of you and I bet you two wouldn’t yell, at each other, so much.

Nicky…I need you to know that I have never, once, doubted you. When I put your name, on that will, I never expected you to be perfect. You were my partner, in crime, for many years…who knew you better than I did? I didn’t take the decision lightly and even though it threw you, for a loop…you were the right choice, and I wouldn’t change it. I’m very proud of you, Nick. I have been the whole time, and it’s not about to change. Just be yourself, Nick, and you’ll always make me proud.

I love you, blondie, and I’ll always be watching over you.

- Brian

Yay Steph, you'll really enjoy it.

Kris, that letter was awesome, it's so Brian-ish!  ;)  ;)

Steph...Thanks for deciding to try it out...I saw your reviews, too! I hope that you continue to enjoy it.

Er...Thanks for listening to me vent, while I tried to write that. I'm glad it came out as good as it did. lol. I had no clue what to write!

Mare...I'm glad it was ok. That was a nice question and it gave me a challenge!

I'm sorry you hed to vent when doing it lol I didn't mean it to turn into a homework assignment but i'm glad that in the end it gave you a nice challenge.

This one is a lot easier, I promise lol

Is there anything in this story that you regret writing? Or if you had the chance to go back and change you would?

And about how many more chapters do you have until it's done?

LOL...It wasn't a bad venting, Mare.

As far as anything I regret...I second guess myself, a lot, on how far I took Kevin out of character. Sometimes, I sit and try to think of another route I could have taken, with him. That's really the only thing I've regretted, on occasion, but I don't think I would change it...heck, I don't think I could, even if I wanted to, because it's such a major part of the story!

How many chapters are left...LMFAO.. .not a clue! I'd say that it is well over half done, though. I write chapter by chapter and, sometimes, I think something will get done in one chapter, but it ends up taking two, so there's really no way of telling for sure.

^ yup, that's me too. I can never actually pinpoint when something is going to be done and when I try to do it, I fail miserably. lol

WHOOT...I'm not the only one! Lol. I commend those that can outline everything and know exactly how many chapters it will take, because I suck at that!  [color]

haha that's me. I'm pretty anal about outlining. I usually know exactly what happens in which chapter. The only I'm ever wrong, is when a chapter turns out to be longer than I thought it would be and I end up splitting it.

I always outline before I start, but erm...I have this horrible habit of not sticking to it. I can crank out chapters a lot faster when I force myself to stick to "the plan" but I find when I'm writing, I end up going in a direction I didn't initially think of but that I like better and inevitably it has a ripple effect that causes me to have to change things later in the fic, too...

Or worse, in the case(s) of many of my older unfinished fics that I'm now finally starting to work on again--I had complete outlines, but I've erm...misplace d them, and don't really remember exactly where some of them were going...lol.

I have never outlined a thing. lol I always fly blind. I mean I know where i'm going but not exactly sure how long it will take me to get there.

Kristal i'm curious, how do you picture Baylee older? Still all curly and smaller than normal? What is his age in your story and give us a quick little description of what he looks like.

Baylee is 15, in the story.

He is still a blonde mass of curls, he even describes his hair as 'the same haircut I've had all my life'. I don't believe I have ever mentioned his exact height...but he's fairly tall. He plays basketball, football, and runs every morning with his best friend...so he has that skinny, yet muscular, kind of build.

It's weird trying to picture Baylee that old. lol I just see that small kid's head on a teenagers body.

Guys there's only one more week left to feature this one, so if anyone has any questions for Kristal, now's the time!

How about I pose this to the LATB readers.

Tell us what your favorite scene of this story has been and why?

I actually have two favorite scenes in the story, well two that stand out...

The first one is- Is when Howie visits, he's not as innocent as we all think he is. He and AJ take Baylee ghost hunting and when they get home, Nick is waiting and scolds them. But they are busy making fun of Nick...it just made me laugh through the chapter.

The second one is- When Baylee, Morgan and Sean are at their favorite hang out and all of a sudden they start talking about the male reproduction system and poor Morgan is stuck with two boys talking about themselves...I just thought it was cute and funny. Something that teens would somehow end up talking about. lol!!

Ha ha...not only so they take Bay ghost hunting...they snuck him out, in the middle of the night, to do it!  :D

I had completely forgotten about the second one. How I could forget, I'm not sure...even after we talked about it, I still had to go back and re-read it! How bad is THAT?!? I laughed so hard when I wrote that, too! I'm a dork. lol.

So I just read your new update. Question??

Why does it seem like Leighanne was constantly down poor Brian's throat?

Favourite parts so far when they go to the shopping mall where they are all acting like kids on those kiddie rides, Nick is back to being Nick instead of a clone of Kevin.

Also the part where they go away for Christmas to Maine, playing in the snow.

Still not caught up and have a long way to go, but I'll get there :)

Of course...you had to ask! Let's see if I can explain this right, lol.

First of all...if you look at the dates, of the journal, they are pretty spaced out...with days or, even, weeks, in between them.

The journal was more of a venting tool, for him, than anything else. He used it to blow off steam, if something was bothering him...to sort out his thoughts, when he had to make a big decision...and sometimes to describe big events, like Baylee's birthday.

His entries aren't a day-by-day blow of everything, that was going on, in his life. He just wrote about the major things on his mind. I can't imagine he would need to vent about going to a movie, with Leighanne, or her surprising him, with his favorite dinner.

It's one of those things, where you can vent all day long, about everything that's wrong...but, not even think to mention what's right. Like those nights where you and I sit on AIM bitching about our men and everything that is pissing us off...but I forget to mention that mine vacuumed the house, and you forget to mention that yours surprised you by bringing home arm loads of groceries.

Does any of that make sense?  :-\ Do you have ANY clue what I'm talking about?

That's one of the things that I really liked about the journal entries--they really seem like it's a journal. A lot of times when writers use journals within stories, they do seem to write it "blow-by-blow". Now, I guess maybe that is how some people write in their journals, but I know mine are more like Brian's--they're to think things out and vent frustrations that I wouldn't otherwise vent.

This may have already been asked (I haven't gone through this whole thread cuz I'm still reading the story *hides face*. Really enjoying it so far, had hoped to finish by the end of the month but doesn't look like I'll make it. Next month for sure though! LOL) so if it has, I apologize! But I know you said you write chapter-by-chapter, but did you know any of the major events before you started out (not counting, of course the stuff that's the whole premise like Brian/Leighanne's deaths) or how far in advance do you know stuff that's going to happen? For example the trip to Maine, did you know several chapters ahead that they were going to do that, or was it as spur of the moment as it was in the fic?

Do you know how it all ends (for this story, not counting if you do any sequels)?

When I first started writing LATB...I only really had the main concept. I think I re-wrote the prologue ten times, before I actually posted it. The same goes for the first chapter. Early on, most events were rather spur of the moment. I do write chapter-by chapter, however, I do plan a lot of things out, in my mind, too.

The journal...yeah ...I never planned for that to end up being a continuous part, of the story. I had put the first entry in, just as a one time deal. But I got so much feedback on how well it fit and people were asking for more, of Brian and that was when I got the idea of using the journal, to reveal how Nick became Baylee's guardian. It took quite a few entries, before it got that far, though. So I guess it started as a spontaneous thing...but ended up getting planned out.

The trip to Maine...Nick came up with that idea, lol. I was just sitting there working on it, when it came time for Nick to say something...th at's what popped out, so I went with it. The characters make a huge impact, on the events. Although sometimes one, of them, will come up with something and I'm like "Uh...no." and then delete whatever it was. LMAO!

I won't go into details on these things, as you haven't gotten that far, but things like Morgan's master plan, Ashley, Mason's 'move', the farm, and Morgan's outburst were all planned out at least a couple chapters ahead. Sometimes it's only a chapter, or two ahead...someti mes it's several chapters. Talk about having inconsistent methods!

Do I know how it ends? Is "sort of" an answer?  :-\ I have a few varying ideas, for how this story will end. Nothing concrete though. I am pretty set about the time frame, in which, it will end...but not the exact ending events.
