Title: The Definitive BSB Album Ranking Thread
Post by: RokofAges75 on July 25, 2016, 11:39:31 AM
The conversation in the "new music" thread about our favorite albums and songs made me think we should have a thread to discuss all albums and songs, not just IAWLT.  Here's a survey to get us started!

Copy/paste the list below of all BSB tracklistings and give each song a rating from 0-4 points (0 being the worst, 4 being the best).  Here's the rating scale:

0 = HATE this song, SKIP!
1 = don't like this song, usually skip
2 = this song's okay, sometimes skip
3 = like this song, rarely skip
4 = LOVE this song, never skip!

I am only posting the standard editions, but I know depending on where you bought your album, some albums might have extra songs that could affect your rating, so feel free to add on if you want to.  Also, if there's an album you don't have (like the U.S. Backstreet Boys if you're outside the U.S.), you can just take that one out.

At the end of each album, find an average rating by adding up the points you gave each song and dividing them by the number of tracks on that album.

At the end of your survey, rank the albums in order from your favorite to least favorite, according to the average ratings you gave them.  You're welcome to add comments too!

Title: Re: The Definitive BSB Album Ranking Thread
Post by: RokofAges75 on July 25, 2016, 01:04:08 PM
Here's mine!  This was harder than I thought.  I ended up having to compare songs not just to the other tracks on that particular album, but to all other BSB songs... as in, there are some songs that I never skip when listening to that particular album only, but do sometimes skip when they come up on my playlist of all BSB songs, so I gave those ones a 3 and reserved my 4s for those select few that I hardly ever skip in any context.

Also, I rounded all decimals to the nearest hundredth.

2021 Edit:  I revisited this post to rank the songs on DNA and was shocked to see it unseat IAWLT as my "favorite" BSB album!  I don't feel like it is my favorite because half the tracks on it are just okay - pleasant, but nothing special - but the other half is still so damn good, my rankings put it on top.  Maybe it's because it's still the newest.  We'll have to see how it holds up after the next album.  I revised some of my rankings on the other albums, realizing I was awfully hard on some of them, especially the red album and Black & Blue.  I've been loving Black & Blue more lately, so it moved up a spot to tie with Backstreet's Back.  Unbreakable moved down a spot because although it's a pleasant album, a lot of the tracks are kind of boring.  It hasn't held up for me as well as other albums.  Also, no Kevin.  This is Us is still the worst, LOL.

I could get past the lyrics if I liked the music (as evidenced by the many songs with stupid lyrics that I ranked highly LOL), but I don't like any part of PDA.  How you feel about that one is how I feel about Hologram (reject song from the same era), though... I know a lot of people hate it, but it's my jam!  I would have given it a 4 if it were on the album.

Once more people fill this out, it will be interesting to see which songs are universally liked/disliked and which ones are controversial.

Yes, I agree that it will be interesting to compare and see if there is a general consensus. I couldn't help but notice that your overall average scores were way lover than mine!! LOL Perhaps that shows that I'm not very picky when it comes to BSB. With other bands, I will be quick to dismiss a song, but I tend to always give BSB songs another chance.  ;) After doing this, I realized that I gravitate towards the up-to-mid-tempo songs. Sappy, super-slow love ballads are NOT my jam!

Someone once asked me to choose my top five BSB songs and it was a legit struggle. I told the person that if I HAD to pick, I would probably go with the following, but that my list was somewhat fluid. :)

1. Siberia
2. Something That I Already Know
3. Shape of My Heart
4. I Still
5. In A World Like This

LOL - Hologram!! That's too funny! Although, I have also been known to rock out to "Set It Off".  ::) I'm not sure what era that was rejected from, but I know that it's probably up there with PDA in terms of "lameness".

Also, can we talk about the fact that they did not include "Light On" on an album?! I seriously LOVE that song!

2 = this song's okay, sometimes skip

Well, that was interesting and a lot more math than I ever wanted to do lol

I was kind of surprised that I didn't have the first three albums. I thought I only lacked the red one but actually I lacked a lot more. I was going to rank them anyway but honestly, a lot of those songs I don't think I would even know. I'm also surprised that Never Gone scored a little better than IAWLT. It also really solidified the fact that I really really hate This is Us lol aka the Scissors.

Also, can we talk about the fact that they did not include "Light On" on an album?! I seriously LOVE that song!

I tried to save my 4s for the best of the best.  I ended up lowering some scores as I went along and started comparing songs from one album to songs from another.  For example, a few on Unbreakable ended up being lowered from 4s to 3s because even though I never skip them when I listen to Unbreakable specifically, I do skip them sometimes when I listen to my playlist of all BSB songs.  Not that it was necessarily meant to be filled out that way, but it made the most sense to me once I got going and realized that the best songs on one album don't necessarily compare to the best songs on another album.

I'm the same as you in preferring the midtempos and uptempos to ballads.  I think probably the majority of my 0s and 1s were ballads, although they do have some wonderful ballads that I ranked highly.  I'm generally not into the bland, overly R&B, slow jam style ballads.

Choosing favorite songs IS hard!  My top two all-time favorites would have to be Don't Wanna Lose You and Siberia... beyond that, it fluctuates.

Set it Off is Never Gone era - some great rejects from that album too!  We should do another list like this for all the rejects, b-sides, and bonus tracks, 'cause some of them are amazing.  Drowning and It's Christmas Time Again could be included in that list too, since they weren't technically on an original album (I felt like it wasn't fair to include Chapter 1 on this list).  I love Light On too!

You need to get yourself some old-school BSB!  Really you just need the red album and Backstreet's Back, since the US Backstreet Boys is just a combination of the two (and not necessarily all the best tracks off the two either).

I have the greatest hits album which covers all their old hits. I do agree though, one day I'll buy an old school BSB album lol

You should, 'cause there's some good songs on both albums that aren't on their greatest hits.  Like a Child... 10,000 Promises... That's the Way I Like It... I Wanna Be With You... Boys Will Be Boys (a.k.a. The Date Rape Song, which I still love in spite of its awful lyrics)... and the All I Have to Give Conversation Mix, to name a few. LOL

Bumping this thread five years later!  The topic of favorite albums came up on Twitter tonight, and I remembered this thread and realized it hadn't been updated to include DNA.  So I updated the first post for anyone who wants to revise their post or take the ranking survey for the first time.

I also revised my rankings, and according to the numbers, DNA is now my favorite album!  That is not what I said on Twitter; I still feel like it's IAWLT with Millennium as a close second, but I can't deny the number of fours on DNA.  Maybe I'm biased because it's still the newest - I probably didn't give as many fours on the old albums because they've been overplayed - but half the DNA album is still amazing, and the other half is just fine.

Anyway, let us know if you add your DNA rankings!

You know I love science, but also Millennium and Backstreet's Back are the quintessential best albums! I missed this Twitter thread, because I am a Twitter lurker, but that is my firm opinion.

BSB Album Survey

Album #1:  Backstreet Boys (the red album)
1.  "We've Got It Goin' On"  Rating: 3
2.  "Anywhere for You"  Rating: 4 (It would have been lower a few years ago, but it's regrown on me... like a lot, probably to the point of rating it a 5 now -- see below.)
3.  "Get Down (You're the One for Me)"  Rating: 4
4.  "I'll Never Break Your Heart"  Rating: 3
5.  "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)"  Rating: 4 (Why isn't 5 a choice? lol  5: I would play this song on repeat for an hour and never get sick of it!)
6.  "Boys Will Be Boys"  Rating: 3
7.  "Just to be Close to You"  Rating: 4
8.  "I Wanna Be With You"  Rating: 4
9.  "Every Time I Close My Eyes"  Rating: 3
10.  "Darlin'"  Rating: 2

12.  "Roll With It"  Rating: 4
13.  "Nobody But You"  Rating: 3
14.  "Don't Leave Me" Rating: 4

(I'm not including the remixes on my version because... I do tend to skip them since they're remixes and it's not fair to Don't Leave Me that it was only on the version with them.)

So, judging by my numbers, I'm going to have to take note of these fictitious 5 rankings I added for the four that are the same, lol.

Your Favorite Albums, ranked from favorite to least favorite
1. Backstreet's Back (3.77) [I knew you were curious, 4.15 when adjusted for 5s.]
2. Millennium (3.67) [I knew you were curious, 4.35 when adjusted for 5s.]
3. Backstreet Boys American (3.5/3.92 when adjusted for 5s and the one six, lol -- that 6 probably skews this ranking. I looked, it's 3.83 without it, so still higher than the red album.)
4. Backstreet Boys red album (3.50/3.71 when adjusted for 5s)
5. DNA (3.5/3.67 when adjusted for 5s)
6. Black and Blue (3.5/3.5 when adjusted for 5s... so B&B is a solid 3.5 album, lol.)
7. Never Gone (3.42)
8. In A World Like This (3.25)
9. Unbreakable (2.93)
10. This Is Us (2.91)

See? When you adjust for the non-existent 5 rating, I was correct before doing the math: Millennium and Backstreet's Back (in that order) are the quintessential best Backstreet Boys albums. I think I was most surprised by This Is Us being lower than Unbreakable, because I felt like I enjoy it more overall, but I guess it's that the songs I do love, I like much better than the songs on Unbreakable, but the songs I don't like as much, I like a lot less. I'm surprised IAWLT is as low as it is.

This took me an hour of math, but it was worth it, lol.

It is a lot of math, but isn't it nice to know how they all rank? LOL

Maybe I should have made the scale 1-5 instead of 0-4.  I thought 0-4 would make it easier to add them all up, and songs like "She's a Dream" really don't deserve any points, in my opinion LOL.

Backstreet's Back is a great album!  I wish more people would do this so we could see how everyone's list compares.  It takes a long time, but it's fun!

I liked the zero, there's just no song I would always skip, so I never ended up using it. But in the same spirit of the zero, like I said, there are songs I could play on repeat for hours without getting sick of them at all. And I don't mean a playlist of every song I listed as a five, I really do mean just the one song. I could absolutely listen to a playlist of the 5s for days, or weeks even, and be totally fine.

I tried to start comparing the lists, but then I remembered that I was just taking a break from working on PDemons to get in a different head space before working on my other story, lol. But I did have fun.

Your Favorite Albums, ranked from favorite to least favorite

4. Backstreet's Back (3)
5. This Is Us (2.9)
6. Black and Blue (2.9)
7. Unbreakable (2.8)
8. Backstreet Boys (US Version) (2.8)
9. Backstreet Boys (The Red Album) (2.8)
10. Never Gone 2.4

I will say I'm surprised DNA ranked at number one. I knew it was in my top four but top album was surprising but it's one of those albums that are just so solid. The "skip songs" aren't really skip songs and the great songs are just so good. And IAWLT is one of my faves and has been for awhile, my top four I've always said was a mix of DNA, IAWLT, Millennium, and Backstreet's Back. And Never Gone being at the bottom was expected. The latter half are all practically ties which sounds about right. TIU like NG has some great songs but the bad songs are just SO BAD to me LOL. And that's true for NG too. Some of my top faves are on both albums and some of my most hated are also on those albums. This was fun though!

Go DNA!  That's what I realized, too; I don't have any true "skip songs" on DNA if I'm listening to the whole album, but I will skip about half the songs if they come up on my random BSB playlist while I'm driving just because they're kind of boring... but they're not bad, so I definitely wouldn't give them 1s or 0s.  And the rest of the album is straight 4s.

I've always loved NG, but I will say as a whole album, I don't think it has held up as well as the ones before it.  It has some of my favorite BSB songs of all time on it, but a lot of the other tracks fall into the "pleasant, but boring" camp for me.  I like them fine, but I don't go out of my way to listen to them.

It's the divisiveness of some of them, I think. The good songs are amazing, but the less good ones are just... well not as good.

I noticed I've ranked a lot higher overall than everyone else. Maybe I'm not being critical as much as I should be, haha.

Y'all will be please to know that I did skip "She's A Dream" in the car today, but nothing else, lol.

Here's a pattern I've noticed, we all pretty much think that the end of B&B is a bit of a let down compared to the beginning. Why is this?

I based my ratings mostly on my listening patterns when I'm driving around with my master BSB playlist on, which songs I always listen to and which ones I sometimes skip when it's on shuffle.  Skipping doesn't necessarily mean I don't like the song, just that I'm not always in the mood to hear it.  I think that's why mine are overall lower than most people's.  I gave my 4s sparingly LOL.

She's a Dream is the worst BSB song ever, at least among the officially released ones.  (Sorry, Rose. LOL)

I would say the back half of most of the albums is not as good as the front half (other than NG, Unbreakable, and IAWLT, in my opinion).  They tend to frontload them with the best songs/singles and put more of the ballads toward the end.  I usually prefer midtempos and upbeat songs to ballads.  Although How Did I Fall in Love With You is one of my all-time favorite BSB songs, easily top ten if not top five, so that makes B&B worth listening to all the way to the end.  But Yes I Will and It's True are boring LOL.

This is probably very sad, but I actually have to go back and listen to some of these DNA songs because I honestly do t remember them. Like, I can’t remember which one was the a capella one I loved. I mean some I remember but most just vaguely. I haven’t listened to any of these in a long long time especially since I no longer have long car rides. That used to be my prime listening time.

Breathe is the a capella song. :)

I hear you.  The car is my prime music listening space too.  I almost always listen to music while I'm on the computer too.

I thought it was called Breathe but I was thrown off because it’s not on your song list for DNA. I knew it was a one word song so I thought it was Chances but that didn’t sound right either.

I updated mine and Millennium is still number one but DNA tied with Nevergone for second place.

OMG You're right!  LOL How did that happen?  It's literally the same track number as Breathe on IAWLT.  Oh well, I fixed it!  Sorry, Breathe.

It's confusing because they have two Breathes. Why Boys? I hope they do more a cappella songs in the future; they're just beautiful every time.

That makes sense and that's a good way to do it. Since in a limited time frame, there's probably more to skip. I am more critical of the songs on my drive to work, versus like a drive to the airport or something where I'll have loads of time to listen.

You're right, they typically load the front end. I wish they didn't. I think as far as album flow, I'm Taking Off is superb because the "skippable" songs are interspersed rather than backend heavy. At first I thought, maybe it would be better to have great songs in the beginning and end, then good to okay songs in the middle, but I think a middle slump wouldn't be great either. Whereas something like I'm Taking Off has them mixed up more, so it still feels like listening to most of the album. But that's only tangentially related to Backstreet albums.

That's exactly it.  When I'm on my way to work, I only want to listen to songs I really love.  The drive takes about 20 minutes, so I only have time for about 5-7 songs - they better be good ones!  So I will skip more than I do if I'm just listening to albums in order on a long drive.  If DWLYN or Siberia pops up on shuffle, I feel like it's going to be a good day LOL.

I agree with you about I'm Taking Off; that's a great example.  If anything, that is one where the majority of my skip songs are in the middle, but then you have Falling Down right smack dab in the middle to break up the boring ones.  My two favorites on that album are Burning Up and I'm Taking Off, though, so I think the beginning and end are best.

I actually used to start Never Gone at Track 8 (Climbing the Walls) because that began the best part of the album for me.  I would listen to the last five songs first so I wouldn't have to wait the whole album to get to Siberia, then let it repeat back to Incomplete (also one of my favorites) and play from the beginning.  The only true skip song for me on NG is Poster Girl, but the more boring songs are also toward the middle.

I have ten minutes, maybe 15 with traffic, so it would take most of the drive to skip through songs I liked less, so I'll usually just roll with it, lol. (pun intended). But sometimes the playlist plays multiple songs from an album by pure coincidence, so if it's double Millenniums, it feels like I struck gold, lol.

I'd say mine is a mountain range. Up, down, up, down, up. But also same with beginning and end, except my two favorites are probably Not The Other Guy and Falling In Love Again. It's really the 3-5 section I feel most meh about in comparison, lol.

That's funny! I'm mostly just team shuffle unless I pop in the actual CD, then I'll just let it play.

LOL Good point!  Sometimes skipping songs on shuffle to find a 4 takes more time than just listening to a song.  It always makes me laugh when it plays two songs in a row that are back to back on an album.  Or both versions of a song (like QPG or Everybody) back to back.  What are the chances?  (Pun also intended.)

Aww, I also love Not the Other Guy and Falling in Love Again.  And I agree about 3-5.  Addicted is okay, but So Far Away and Special are both skip songs for me.  I have the Japanese version of that album, so I also have Jewel in Our Hearts at the end, which I enjoy because it makes me laugh.  It's such a strange song in English, but I love singing along to it in the car.

I actually have two BSB playlist for the car, one that has all their songs (including B-sides and unreleased songs, solo songs, etc.) in alphabetical order that I usually play on shuffle, and one that has all the albums in order that I listen to in order.  I'm less likely to skip when I'm listening to the album playlist.

The other day, I was listening to my old digital list that I somehow managed to get on google music before my computer died and it played every version of QPG back to back that I had, which is a lot because it's the only single I bought both versions of. And as I've mentioned, I adore it, so I had the best time on that drive, lol. I could do the math, but it makes it less fun. So I'll just say that reaping the benefits of the chances was awesome!

It's the rise and fall of his voice for different lines in both of them. That and the adorable little uh-ohs. I'm not sure if they're meant to be just random audibles, but I like to think they're literal uh-ohs, because it makes it cuter. :) The only thing that bothers me is why it changes from "you" to "her" in the second verse. Like why is "calling just to hear you breathing" less creepy than "watching you sleep while you're dreaming"? Like at least the girl let him into her bed, calling to hear "breathing" implies he's not saying anything and she's not talking either, lol. While I'm on this mini rant, "speaking" and "breathing" have the same sound, so why not "speaking"? But the song is too good to nitpick while it's on, just here.

Aw, that's the version I bought when I realized I didn't own a hard copy of it. I haven't listened to it from the CD yet though, just digital still.

Hmm... That's smart. I do like the spotify one because it does that and is shuffleable, but its downside is that they call it "The Complete Backstreet Boys" and the Boys (or whoever is in charge of their spotify) made the playlist, but it doesn't have b-sides or the import albums. It's not the complete Backstreet Boys without Backstreet's Back or the red album, Boys!
