Title: How diverse are you as a writer?
Post by: mare on June 23, 2012, 08:30:35 AM
How diverse are you as a writer?

Here is a test for you guys, I'm going to put a whole crap load of categories below. Put the titles of one of your stories by any of the things you think it will fit in. You don't have to have a ton of stories under your belt to do this. One story of yours could fit in several categories, although it probably would make your life easier if you have written more than a few. LOL Go through your AC catalogue only and try to fit everything in that catalogue somewhere on this list.

The test for you is to see how diverse you really are when it comes to writing or if you tend to always write the same old thing.

Eh, I'm bored lol

I thought this would be fun especially for people who have written a crap load of stories!! I'm going to have a ball doing this later. It looks like you ate a pretty diverse writer miss Steph! Although I think we already knew that! ;)

Lmao that was supposed to be 'are' and not ate! That's another word auto-correct changes all the time. Normally I just modify it but I kept it because it was pretty funny lmao

Wow, you are diverse, Steph!!  But like Mare said, we already knew that!  Good for you!!  I will try this in a few; I'm not sure how mine will look, so it will be interesting.  I do have a lot of stories if I include all my old ones, but I also have a certain wheelhouse!

Wow, Steph, you have something in nearly every category! That's awesome! I'm going to fill this out too, I wonder how it'll look since I mostly have romance and challenge stories haha. If I included some stuff from other fandoms, it'll probably look a little better lol

Surprisingly, yeah!  A lot of those are old stories from when I was a very prolific young teenybopper LOL, and some of the ones in genres that are not my forte (slash, sci-fi) were challenge stories for here.

Poor Howie! You have all these stories for everyone we get to Howie and nothing! :( lmao

I figured you'd have a ton of fun with this considering how much you have written over the years! Yay so far the two of you are very diverse! I am going to take a nap then do this between innings while I watch the Subway Series later!

Poor Howie! You have all these stories for everyone we get to Howie and nothing! :( lmao

I know!  Poor Howie LOL.  I started a Howie story once, that first summer I wrote fanfic (because I realized then I had at least a short story about every Boy but Howie), and that was the first story I ever discontinued after posting it LOL.  It's not even online anymore; it got lost somewhere along the way.  I also started one about Howie as Dr. Rough (00Carter) for that origins challenge a few years ago, but I never finished that one either.  Fail!

And if I were to write a visual, Howie is the very last Backstreet Boy I would want to write it about, so there goes that plan - sorry, Howie! LOL  That'd make a great challenge story, though, one of those "write outside your comfort zone" ones!  Or for April Fool's LOL.

Ugh, I just found the one and only slash fic I ever wrote.  It was for a challenge on the Take That site I used to post on, it's called Strange & Beautiful and it's not a graphic one but still not something I was happy writing.

So I think I seem to have covered almost everything apart from the original fiction category!

LOL I guess we could have added a "joke story" category!  I didn't include my tranny cancer story from April Fool's either.

It's sad how many of my stories would fit in a joke category lol

LOL It's okay, I love your groundhog stories!  I had more comedies than I realized too.

I think I skipped some stories and/or missed some places they should've been put because after I had it half filled out the document got really long and I kept losing my place. LOL But here's my attempt at filling it out. I have written other fandoms but they're not online anywhere so I didn't include them here. :)

That was hard! I didn't realize how many of my stories don't just focus on one boy (unless that one boy is Nick, LOL). Not surprising that I don't really have any AJ or Brian centered stories - though I do have stories that are from their POV. I find them the hardest to write about. I included ones that I've been working on pretty heavily that haven't been posted yet... because I've been writing them. So they count! haha.

You know, I find AJ very easy to write. But I always give him this jaded/twisted perspective lol.

I feel like I'd give him a jaded/bitter perspective as well, but I typically hand that off to Nick. So to write AJ with the same sort of attitude would be hard, because I'd have to make him different than Nick.

After filling this out I had no idea I'd written so many different stories in just 3 years of posting at AC. I'm actually shocked!

I like writing AJ as a supporting character/sidekick better than the main character.  But I do tend to have him star in a lot of my short stories; I didn't realize that until I filled this out LOL.

Nick's jaded too, but AJ's got that really twisted sense of humor, which is how I try to differentiate. That and Nick has his random moments lol. Basically Nick's a lot like me at times. Minus the whole jaded thing. I like to give Nick weird nuances, like singing to himself when he's nervous. AJ gets my sick and morbid humor lol.

Julie, I noticed the same thing. If it's not Nick in a one-shot, it's AJ when it comes to me lol.

After reading your answers, I therefore conclude that I am the only writer in AC that is not a diverse one... LOL

I tend to write Nick kind of insecure and unsure of himself...a bit shy. Which is how I am somewhat. I put a lot of myself into Nick when I write my AU series. In Forces Of Nature he is a skirt chasing comedian. For AJ I usually make the one Nick goes to for advice, someone Nick looks up to. Brian is there as another support system. I love writing them like that.

I try to keep Nick real to life. He's a random video game addict, he's got issues, he deals with a lot. So while there's a lot of me, I put in a lot of the perception he puts out there too. I don't think there's a point unless Nick comes off real. Or else why write fanfic? You may as well make him an original character lol.

I love how much we are finding out about ourselves by filling this out. I have a pretty easy time of it writing AJ but not as a lead. I was kind of surprised that he was the main character in just one of my stories. I thought he would have had more shorts devoted to him at least. Howie seems to be the one I give all my one shots too lol AJ tends to be comic relief in my stuff.

I wasn't surprised by my lack of Brian stories. I just can't channel the guy. You would think I'd have a ton if Frick & Frack stories but unless you put It Stays in the category, I had nothing at all lol

I understand what you mean, Rose and I do the same. I try to keep Nick himself but add other elements as well. Well, the way I see he is anyway. Depends on the story I am writing.

AJ is good for comic relief!  That's why I prefer to write him as a supporting character.  I like that side of AJ best.

I definitely agree! I use AJ more for comic relief than anything else, I think.

I like using AJ for dark humor. And cussing. AJ's great at cussing. Sometimes when you need something rude said, AJ's the best one for the job. He's always very frank in my stories. He's a good catalyst bringer because of that. I like using Nick as comic relief. AJ and Nick's interactions are usually really silly so the combination of them make good relief, but AJ on his own is more of a saying-what-needs-to-be-said person in my fics.
