Title: The February Challenge
Post by: mare on February 01, 2009, 03:33:51 PM
Hey gang!

I'm calling this challenge short, but sweet.

It's been awhile since we've had a picture challenge and this is the shortest month of the year. So, this is what you have to do.

~Write a scene of no more than 1,000 words about the picture I am posting.

~You can only use dialogue to convey your thoughts.

~ NO bannners if posting on AC.

Those are the only two rules because this challenge is going to be tough! lol

Because the stories will be so short, you don't even have to really post them on AC if you don't want to. Feel free to just post them in here.

oh and if someone else wants to change to a different picture feel free to post one. The same exact rules will apply though. LOL I admit I was just too lazy to really look around for a great picture and this one is one of my favorites.

I found this picture cute and amusing for this challenge.  ;D So I thought I'd toss it in the thread.

I know, it's a bit big, I was too lazy to resize lol. And I'm on dial up so everyone can deal with it!  :P lol.

I just discovered this gem today. He's so pretty.

I sent out the feelers but I don't get too much out of that picture. Nothing comes to me. Probably because Kevin is in it.

you can use any pic you'd like. It doesn't have to be the one I have up there.

I'm just joking... I am not as cool as you guys, I never have ideas for these things

I'm more of a reader, but I might give this a try. If we use any picture, does it have to be the Backstreet Boys, or can it be something else?
Title: Re: The February Challenge

Oh, that's a good question. Can we use other fandoms?

You can use whatever pick you'd like. Doesn't matter of it's the boys or not. Have fun :)

Okay, I'm going to attempt this one. Keeping it under 1000 words may be my issue (damn being a babbler...), BUT just want to clarify when you say "only dialoge to convey thoughts", you mean that you can only use dialogue period, or that you can only use diologue to convey character's emotions, etc, but can use prose to describe the scene/actions?
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: mare on February 14, 2009, 03:49:32 PM
only dialogue and nothing else :)

WOOT! lol
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: Chaos on February 15, 2009, 03:05:52 PM
That was actually a really hard challenge! It was hard to figure out how to make at least most of the characters identifiable using only dialogue. I don't know how anyone could possibly read it without knowing the characters and figure out who the heck is saying what. (Although probably even some who do know the characters will have trouble with that, but eh. lol.)

Edit: And according to "Word" it was exactly 1000 words. When I posted it said only 920, but hey.

It was a fun one! Can't wait to see what next month's is.  ;D

Yeah, that's exactly what I though when I looked at the picture. But like I said in my review, I knew pretty much who was speaking the whole time. You did great at making them identifiable.

It is very hard to just write an entire story in dialogue. I wrote a short story like that a few years back for fun and it was one of the hardest things I have ever tried to do.

You diod a great job at making them identifiable, even for someone like me who didn't know who was who. I wasn't too confused.

Yeah, that was hard!!! I probably should have picked a picture with fewer characters, but I just couldn't resist trying to make up one for that pic. Glad it wasn't *too* confusing! lol

Ok. I did mine too. I wanted to change it up a little so I went with a Firefly picture. But AC doesn't have a Firefly category, so I just posted it under original fiction for now. (You think maybe you guys could add one? Steph and I want to write a Firefly fan fic, and we'll need a place to post it...)

Anyhoo, here's my challenge. May be the shortest response I've ever done. It's called Unexpected Company

I'd be happy to add the category. Woot! New Fandom!

I haven't ever watched that show, but just picked up the DVD set on sale a few days ago. Just have to find time to sit down and watch it.

Dude! Best TV series ever. You must find time. Watch the show before you watch the movie though. (It's better, and you'll like the movie better if you know the characters first.)

Post by: Chaos on February 15, 2009, 05:27:39 PM
Funny enough that's why I bought the series, so I could watch the movie. I've heard it's supposed to be a pre-quel, but I hate seeing things out of order. LOL.

Plus, okay, a lot of people that I generally have the same taste as have loved the show, so I knew I had to check it out. I was just reluctant because I knew it'd been cancelled already before I'd even heard of it. *grumbles*. (I'm a big fan of Whedon, though, so I knew eventually I'd have to watch.)

Category has been added. You'll have to tell me if I missed any characters--I just went from the IMDB info.

I actually liked the series better than the movie. But I won't discuss until after you've seen it.

Spiffy. Maybe I'll even try to convince the fam to sit down and watch at least one ep tonight when I get home.

Yes, it was so unjustly canceled before it ever even had a chance to live. (Stupid Fox morons...) But it was soooo awesome it just wouldn't stay dead and it became the only cancelled TV series ever to be made into a major motion picture. It's actually quite the cool story. There's a little about it on the Movie DVD that's worth checking out when you get that far.

Yay another completed challenge of which I know nothing about the characters! lol Although I did watch a few episodes of this one when there was a scifi channel mini marathon going on.

I should write a Highlander or Numb3rs one lol
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: Chaos on February 15, 2009, 06:54:25 PM
OOoh! I'd love to see a Numb3rs one. That'd be a hard fandom to write, I'd think, but it'd be cool.  ;D
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: mare on February 15, 2009, 08:42:19 PM
I don't know if i'd be able to do a Numb3rs one with just dialogue. I'm afriad to do a normal one because of all the math lol
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: Chaos on February 16, 2009, 01:56:10 PM
LOL. Yeah that'd be my problem with Numb3rs, too. I mean I can do the research for stuff like CSI, etc, and bluff my way through it, but when it comes to talking math...just don't think I'd be good at that--at least not making it *interesting*. I haven't read much from that fandom, but there are a few good fics out there. Most of them use the characters but ignore the math. lol.

I've read the challenges posted so far and whilst I don't know the characters, I thought the challenge stories were great.

So, if it can be about any picture I'll have another go and see what I come up with :)

"Lex,Are you okay?"

"I'm fine dad."

"You don't look fine to me."

"If you must know,I had a fight with Clark."

"Clark?..Didn't I tell you to stay away from him!"

"Your not my keeper!"

"Lex,Clark's not the kind of person you should be around!"

"Goodbye dad!"

Hmm. I was thinking of doing a Smallville one, but I couldn't find a picture I liked. Yours was short sweet and to the point. (Kind of like a lot of Smallville scenes haha. THey're always showing up unannounced on that show, then say five words and abruptly leave again.) Good job! I found a good picture for the office, but it's harder than I thought it would be, so I haven't written anything yet. Maybe I'll try a Roswell picture. I know that show better.

Good job so far everyone! Kudos to you all!

Okay, so I need a little help. I'm trying to post something for the challenge and I'm just trying to italicize one word. I do this: <i>me<i> and it italicizes everything. I've seriously tried every other variation. Can anyone show me how to do it? lol
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: RokofAges75 on February 22, 2009, 04:08:07 PM
You're forgetting the slash in the second tag.  It should be:

<i>me</i>

The slash closes the italics, so then it will go back to regular text.

Oooh, gotcha. It takes me a minute to get all of this online jazz down. I swear I think I'm the most comp. illiterate 22 year old out there, either that or I just don't care enough. lmao Thank you so much for your help though!

LOL no problem; it took me awhile to master the whole HTML tag thing too.  I had the "Oh no, why is everything in italics??" problem too LOL.

^LOL Well with your help I was able to post it. So here's my submission everyone:
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9604

I ended up using Mare's picture because I had toyed with the idea of writing a short about that trip anyway. The dialogue issue wasn't as I hard as I thought it was going to be, it was kind of refreshing to just use dialogue actually. Keeping it just under a thousand words was another story.

And it's around 985 words, it just always adds on the word count in the story notes for some reason. I did stay within the word limit though, I swear! lmao

^Lol I Sweear it's under 1,000 words... *mumbles* 8 words under. lol  My other story is like 3 words under the word limit. I guess I need to be more concise.
Title: Re: The February Challenge
Post by: mare on February 23, 2009, 09:20:01 PM
8 or 3 words isn't a bad thing. 1,000 words over is a bad thing lol
