Title: Anyone reading books lately...
Post by: kevmylove on September 27, 2008, 03:23:50 AM
Hello...I tried looking to see if anyone had already started a thread of this sort but I didn't see anything. I just wanted to know a couple of things about everyone...if you want to answer.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?

and 3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?

Ok so there it is.

I guess I'll answer my own questions first...

1) I'm definately taking turns reading fan fiction and books.

2) Right now I'm hooked on Twilight and I am excited cause I just got the last of the series Breaking Dawn. I also just read random books...

3) I get ideas of real life situations, books I read and movies I ee and try giving them a twist don't know how it works out for the readers...haha .  :P

1) I tend to read books more so than fanfiction.

2) I have been on a huge Jodi Piquolt kick lately although i'm not enjoying the one i'm reading right now which is called Mercy. I'd recommend Ninteen Minutes and Change of Heart. They were excellent!

3) Sometimes and idea just pops in my head and I go for it. Other times, someone gives me a great idea.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
I mostly read updates to my fave stories in FF, otherwise, I read books.

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?
I am curently reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich...su per easy reads.  I am on Four to Score, I can read one on a long flight round trip or in a about a day.  I really like the female lead, she is hysterical.  I also read books that are sort of self-helpish, the last one of those that I read was The Mystery of Marriage.  I got sidetracked by the Stephanie Plum, but next in my que are The Kite Runner and Angels & Demons.  Everyone keeps telling me I need to check out Twilight, I am usually not into that kind of stuff, though.

3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?
Lots of things...mostl y my experiences, my friends experiences... the premise behind Casual is based loosely on my single self before I got married, but obviously a little more extreme.  Songs give me ideas...lots of things give me inspiration, things people say, etc.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
Definitely!  I actually haven't read much fanfiction lately, besides the rare updates on the stories I'm following.  I have read a lot of "real books" though.

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?
I am also just finishing up "Breaking Dawn," the last of the Twilight Saga.  I've plowed through all four of those books in the last three weeks or so - so good!  I didn't think I would get so into the whole vampire thing, but I gave the first book a chance because so many people had raved about it, and it hooked me too!

Over the summer, I read "North and South" by John Jakes, which is an older book, but I have always wanted to read it because I love the TV miniseries of it.  It's about the friendship of a Northern man and a Southern man in the time leading up to the Civil War.  It's very good, tons of stuff going on.

I also reread the last two Harry Potter books... if anyone hasn't given HP a chance, you should!!!

3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?
Anything and everything!  My latest collaborated project with Rose and Dee spawned from a joke made when we were chatting late one night.  Other stories I've written recently or plan to write have been inspired by other stories, books, or songs.  I have a new idea for an original fic that was inspired by my own imagination when I was little... a pretending game I used to play with my sister.  I realized that kids can way more creative than we are as adults, so I tried to channel some of that childhood fantasy into a story idea.

Everyone keeps telling me I need to check out Twilight, I am usually not into that kind of stuff, though.

What I liked about Twilight was that the main character is just a typical high-school girl, and the vampires are not the traditional cliches.  If you are a romance person, I think you will like it.  There's also suspense and all that good stuff too, but the romantic part is my favorite.

I think vampires are cool; I've always loved all the "scary stuff"... but I had never really gotten into reading vampire fiction, aside from the R.L. Stine books when I was little... and "Salem's Lot."  So I was kind of hesitant about Twilight too.  But it's so different from what I think of as the typical vampire genre that I think you will like it even if you're not normally into that stuff.

I'm on a Jodi Picoult kick lately as well....Right now I am on Nineteen Minutes, just finished the Pact, before that was Perfect Match, Picture Perfect, salem Falls, Nineteen Minutes...and I have Plain Truth and Change of Heart lined up.

I havent read anything BUT Jodi Picoult in over 2 years...lol.

1) I definitely read more books than fanfic... I enjoy the fanfic when I'm just looking for a quick read and novels for me are a "kick back and relax under a cozy blankey" sort of thing.

2)  Right now I'm reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (which I love because I know a lot about the world of Childhood cancer).  I'm also a huge fan of Boy's Life by Robert McCammon, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien and The Five People you Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

3)  Most often the ideas for my fanfics come from personal experiences and the personal experiences of those individuals around me.  Other times, like Mare said, ideas just pop into my head and I run with them.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction? I'm reading Candide and Richard III for school, does that count? I don't have time to read anything long and substansial outside of school. lol

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend? Well, my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. :)

and 3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction? Mostly stuff from real life or an idea that sounds cool, but needs tweaking or something...

I haven't read any Jodi Picoult...what are some of her titles that you guys recommend?
Title: Re: Anyone reading books lately...

can I just say how excited I am that you guys are finally jumping on the Twilight bandwagon?!?!?!  YAY! seriously. And when you finish Breaking Dawn, you have to give The Host a shot. That's Stephenie Meyer's first non Twilight series book. Seriously excellent! I think I liked it better than Twilight. *gasp* I know I didn't know that was possible, but it's amazing.

I'm also reading A ton of Young Adult novels. My favorite Author seems to be Meg Cabot. The Mediator Series, and the 1-800-Where-Are-You series and Avalon High are among my favorites there. THey all have a supernatural element to them and a bit of romance as well.

Also Sarah Dessin Is really good too. Her stories are more about real issues and seem a bit more dramatic. So if you like drama/coming of age stories you'd probably love her. This Lullaby is my favorite of hers so far.

Oh, and I read a really fun one a while back called, Audry, Wait! by Robin Bennway. If you love music you'll have fun with this book.

I just started one called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, and I picked up Boy Toy by Barry Lyga as well. I'll let you know if those are any good.

As for Fan fics? I haven't really read much lately. I think when my writing preference switched to original fiction, my reading taste did as well. But I did read one recently, a Nick AU called My Mind's Eye by your_ill_july. That one was good. I wish she'd update, though.

Where do I get Ideas? I have no idea how to answer that question. I get them from all over the place. Sometimes from songs, sometimes from things I see on movies/tv, sometimes from reading, sometimes from conversations I have with people, sometimes from things that happen to me in life, sometimes from dreams... I get ideas all the time. They always start out as some real basic idea, a random thought. I never just get an idea for an entire story. I think of like one event or situation that sounds cool and then I have a brain storming session with myself and just let my mind run wild.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
Yes, I'm reading a lot of books other than fan fiction and of course some Us weekly.

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?
Twilight and any other book by Stephanie Myers. Also, I recommend She said yes, The boyfriend, Anything by Lois Duncan if you like mystery and suspense.

and 3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?
What ever pops into my head, lol!

It's the love story of a vampire and a human girl... it's very addicting!  And the movie comes out November 21, so give it a try before then so you can be excited about the movie!!

Yes, and the first one isn't that much... under $10 if you get the paperback.  The first two are out in paperback, the second two only in hardback right now.

I haven't read much of anything lately. I think the last two books I read were the 7th HP book and "The Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's childhood friend" by Christopher Moore.

They'll probably still have a big display at Walmart; they do at all the stores.  I got the first book at Target, the second at Walmart, the third at KMart, and I think the fourth at Walmart again... I was on a kick where I would go to a store once about every three days to pick up the next one cause I was plowing through them so quickly LOL.  They all have shiny, black covers; Twilight has a pair of hands holding an apple on the front.

1) I just recently finished reading Sisters by Danielle Steele. And now, I'm back in fan fiction mode - lol.

2) Sisters by Danielle Steele was good. Um, Mary Higgins Clark has some amazing novels - I've still some upstairs I need to read yet-lol. V.C. Andrews - I love her stuff! I've a whole box full of her books I still need to read - if only I could find the box - haha!

3) Songs usually give me ideas for fan fics, or T.V. shows I'm watching spark up ideas. Or  more often that not, a dream I've had sparks up an idea for a new fan fic - though, I've still so many left unfinished - lol. It's an addiction, I swear! :D

Hello!

Ok for those that have read up to New Moon. I just wanted to know who you guys are rooting for....Jacob Black? Edward Cullen?

Personally I love Jacob and I've recently joined a message board for Twilight and lots of readers just hate him...LOL! Not sure why!   :)

You'll see why people 'hate' him soon enough. I don't hate the guy, I just love Edward too much lol Granted Jacob does some shady/questionable things. You'll see though! It gets super crazy from here on out!

Team Edward!  ;D

Haha Jacob had to earn my love back after he'd lost it in New Moon. I've always been completely and Edward girl, but I did gain a special place in my heart for Jacob in Breaking Dawn. He freakin cracked me up over and over again in the last book.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction? I am!

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend? I love older fiction as well as newer too. I just finished Anna Karenina (can never spell that properly lol!) by Leo Tolstoy and I loved it, they don't make novels like that anymore! Also Ulysses is amazing, hard to follow at first because it's stream of consciousness but it's fantastic. Another I would totally recommend is Jane Austen, Persuasion is my personal favorite.

and 3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction? Usually a song or idea or even a line from a book, movie, television show that totally gets me. Like I'm mapping out two stories based on songs. Cupid's Chokehold by Gym Class Heroes and Unmistakable by BSB

Title: Re: Anyone reading books lately...

It's about a thirteen year old girl who was born primarily to save her sister's life. Her parents made sure she had the perfect genes to help be a bone marrow donor for the sister who has cancer, but now that she needs a new kidney too, the little sister decides she doesn't want to donate it and wants to emancipate from her parents. It's all very interesting and told from everyone's point of view which is what I like most about Jodi Picoult.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
i just finished "Acheron" by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I'm a really big fan of her "Dark Hunter" series. Acheron is my favorite book by far. And his character is just amazing and i wish he was real. LoL.

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?
For those who are into Paranormal/Vampire romance books, i definitely recommend any of the "Dark Hunter" books by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?
It usually just comes to me, either through dreams and/or daydreams. Sometimes i get inspired by a book, movie, song or whatever. It all depends. i'm starting to write fiction (not fan fiction) but it's always fun to write fan fiction.

Let's see I'm really into Stephanie Plum series. Has anyone heard of these books though...I seem to watch and read things no one knows about. Argh!

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
Catch Me When I Fall by Nicci French
A child called it by David Pelzer
Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

If you have what do you think of them.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
I'm currently reading a book called 'Sushi For Beginners' by Marian Keyes

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?
I like romance kind of books.  Some of the authors I like are Jilly Cooper, Sophie Kinsella, Cecilia Ahern and Marian Keyes.  Also love Jane Austen.

3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?
Sometimes dreams, or something I see on TV or in a book will spark an idea in my head.

I finally started reading a book! lol

So it's for school, but it's called "The Coquette; or, the History of Eliza Wharton" by Hannah M. Foster. It's told through a series of letters and it kind of reminds me of a cross between Pride and Prejudice and Emma, which are two of my favorite books.

I also like the Eliza is easy to relate to... But maybe that's only because I'm a cock tease too. lol

Anyway, I just wanted to share that I was reading something and enjoying it. :)

I've been working my way through rereading my collection of Stephen King books, since Salem's Lot gave me such a burst of inspiration for my story, for some odd reason.  Unfortunately, Misery did not do the same, even though it's awesome, and now I'm reading Cujo again.  I think next time I'm at a bookstore, I need to pick up one I haven't read before.  To those who like Stephen King books... what are some of your favorites?

It's a bit out there, but it does feature some great Stephen King creepiness. Plus it does encompass the worlds he created in his other books. It's about this gunslinger, and it features other realities and this great grand journey to the Dark Tower.

I've never read SK only ever seen the movies. But I've heard The Stand is a good one.

I've started watching the made-for-TV version of The Stand on Sci-fi like three times... and it starts out really good, and then I always fall asleep and miss the middle LOL.  Literally, every time.  It's just too long.  The book is super long too, but if I can find it in a format where the print is not teeny tiny, I might check that one out.  I would like to know the whole story, not just the beginning! LOL

Decided to put my two cents in it LOL :)

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
I rarely read fanfiction though I try to keep it up with it more lately but I'm a true bookworm, actually I can't sleep if I don't read every night before bed, I can't even leave the house without a book in my bag or I feel naked. I refused to read the Twilight saga for a very long time for no apparent reason but after watching the movie (and keeping up with the resistance for a couple of months more) I've finally given up and read all four books in the last couple of weeks and definitely got hooked. Maybe not the most literary work of art out there but incredibly addictive and entertaining. As side stuff, i'm reading the leaked parts of Midnight Sun.

I've just started reading "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert and it seems ok so far. Not too much of a fan of "self help" books but she has an incredible witty side to her and she's telling her own story which makes it easier to relate to and I even find myself nodding to the stuff she says about relationships so it can be a good read.

And I've bought 6 other books today so i'm pretty much settled for the next two months. LOL.

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend?

As authors, I would definitely recommend Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I've read many of his books and his style is simply extraordinary. Also Dostoyevski and Paulo Coelho are some other faves of mine though Coelho's recent writings are kinda started to go on a holier level, I still like his earlier books. As books, my all time favorite is Martin Eden by Jack London, I just love it.

I can go on forever LOL.

and 3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?

Anything and everything, to say it simply. Sometimes a word, a scene I witness, a conversation I had, a person I see, a dream I had, even the things happening in my life can give me ideas for creating a story.

I just finished Manhunter (or eater) by Jennifer Crusie...it was cute, super cheesy ending though...

I am sleezing out on my next selection, just started Lovers and Players by Jackie Collins...

I've read that Jackie Collins one, it's good :)

Well, I've done so much reading over the last few days.  I read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer in a week.  I just could not put those books down and am totally loving Edward Cullen.  I'm kind of gutted to have finished reading, so I've started Twilight all over again, taking it slower this time.

I plowed through the Twilight saga too LOL.  I started rereading Twilight after the movie came out, though, and I never finished.  It was a lot slower that time, and I got bored by the time James and co. entered the picture.  I wanna read New Moon again over the summer or sometime though.

For now, I'm starting back with the Harry Potter books for the umpteenth time, thanks to the book club!

I did feel a bit sorry for Jacob, but at least he was happy in the end.  As for Edward, he is perfection, hehehe.

Have you read Midnight Sun on Stephenie's website?  There's only the first twelve chapters but it's from Edward's POV and it's amazing, you'll end up loving Edward after reading that.

I'm thinking of reading the rest of the Harry Potter books.  I've got them all, but only read the first one so far.  I'm just not ready to leave the Twilight zone yet, lol.

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction?
I always try to read something other than fanfiction whenever I have the chance. And now that I'm done with the WORST semester of my entire life, I actually have a chance to have a life again. (Remind me NEVER to take 3 production classes in the same semester EVER again).

2) If so, what authors or books could you recommend?
Right now, I'm reading the Sookie Stackhouse series from Charlaine Harris. (This is the series that True Blood is based off). It's actually REALLY good. As much as I loved Twilight, this series is a million times better as far as writing goes.

3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction?
I use whatever is around me to inspire me. Sometimes it's dreams, sometimes it's just a random idea that blossoms. I get inspiration from all over.

I want to reread New Moon before the movie's out too. I've first read them in Turkish and now I'll start reading them in English but I'm so afraid that i'll get addicted to it all over again and stop reading anything else for that matter, LOL!

There's one thing that I tell all the first time Twilight readers though, just don't expect to be able to rest before you finish all 4 of them, cause you can't!

1) Is anybody reading anything else other than fan fiction? I am reading both, fanfiction and various books hahha.
Read the first three books in the House of Night Series by PC and Kristin Cast. Book One- Marked, Book Two- Betrayed & Book Three- Chosen, there are more in the series am trying to hunt them down. Read Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. Right now reading Eye of The World by Robert Jordan.

2) If so, what authors or books could you reccomend? Anything by Nicholas Sparks, Janet Evanovich, The House of Night Series & Vampire Academy Books, both are vampire series. Rachel Gibson books.

and 3) What is it that gives you an idea for fan fiction? Anything can really, a line from a song, a movie, a book, something in real life. Something from a conversation. My Dreams, it all kindda depends.

I didn't even realize that movie was based after a book!

I've done that before.  I read Princess Diaries, (some of) The Lord of the Rings, and A Walk To Remember after seeing the movies.  It's always interesting to see how the film and book compare to each other, and what has been changed.

I usually find that if I read the book before I see the movie, I think the book is better, even if I also like the movie (Harry Potter, My Sister's Keeper, Twilight, most Stephen King books).  If I see the movie first and then read the book, though, I am more likely to say I like them equally or even like the movie better (The Notebook, The Shining, Jurassic Park, Frankenstein).  Apparently I am usually loyal to whatever I experience first LOL.  Usually I think books are better too, though.

I have been trying to finish off the Harry Potter books before the last movie. I'm currently in the middle of GOF and so far the books have been way better than the movies, for me anyway. Except for GOF which I feel like just dragged on. Maybe because of all the quidditch stuff. I feel like the visual quidditch is better than reading about it. I'll be curious to see how I feel concerning the last movie to the last book since it will be the first time i'll be seeing the movie AFTER reading the book.
Title: Re: Anyone reading books lately...

The beginning of GoF is slow compared to the other books; it just takes so much longer to get to Hogwarts than usual.  It gets better, though, trust me!!  GoF was my favorite Harry Potter book for a long time, basically until the last book came out.  It's a pivotal book in the series; the end is epic!  If you've seen the movie, you already know, but the book is way better.  The movie's a little rushed.
Title: Re: Anyone reading books lately...

Harry Potter is a great example of book vs. movie.  I love the books better because of all the details you read about that they can't fit into the movies.  When the movies started coming out,  I had been planning to start reading the series, so I did finish book one before the movie.  I think if I'd seen the movies first, I would have still liked the books better, but its hind-sight bias.

Movie six was interesting because it was the first one where they really took creative license and changed from the books.  Before that movie, the changes were pretty much done for the sake of time.

See I've seen all the movies, and I liked them okay, but then I tried to read the first book and couldn't really make it through the whole thing. I don't know what my problem was, it's the kind of book I should love.

The best is yet to come!  The first two are fun and cute and great introductions to the series, but the third is where it really starts to get good (and deep), and from there on out, it goes from great to amazing!

Oh, and I read a really fun one a while back called, Audry, Wait! by Robin Bennway. If you love music you'll have fun with this book.

*gasp* I know this is an old post but I just HAVE to reply on this! I had borrowed this book from the library not so long ago but it's a Dutch translation and I didn't expect I'd find this book mentioned here! (Even though it's original in English lol) But I totally loved this book! :) The main person in this story is hilarious.

I don't read much (books, that is) but sometimes I feel like going to the library and see what they have. :) I also loveloveloveLO VE the Twilight saga! I have Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse. They're all in Dutch, so I'm still waiting for Breaking Dawn to be finally translated and published here. But it's taking too damn long! Argh!

I love the Harry Potter books but I honestly can't remember what happened in the 6th and 7th book lol. When I saw the 6th movie, I remembered hehe.

Anyway, I love romantic stories but also scary or supernatural stories. At the moment I am reading the book Nick's mother wrote about him lol. I am totally on a BSB collecting hunt so I already read the official book by Rob McGibbon. I started reading Backstreet Mom by AJ's mother but since that one is in English and the official book and the book about Nick are in Dutch, I decided to finish those first. I keep on forgetting to continue reading the book about Nick. Even though they're biographies (or something), they are still quite inspiring. It's fun to read about how their lives turned upside down. :)

There is one author I'd recommend but it's useless because she only writes Dutch books. Her books are all about problems teenagers have to cope with (loverboys, eating disorders, someone committing suicide because he's being bullied at school etc. etc.) They are soooo good! It's especially interesting for me as a 17 year old. :) There are movies of 3 or 4 of her books and they are really good too. I just wished her books would be translated into English and other languages as well so other people can enjoy her stories. *sigh*

I get my inspiration from movies, books, commercials, my experiences, my friends' or family's experiences, songs, quotes... A LOT.

I finished reading "Dear John" (Nicholas Sparks) this week, and... ugh!  I didn't like it.  The male lead, who narrates the story, was a good character, but the girl... talk about a Mary Sue!  I went through a brief Nicholas Sparks phase after "The Notebook" came out, but I have since given up on him, after realizing that all of his books are essentially the same, and all of his female characters are too-perfect, Southern belle Mary Sues.  The only exception is "The Guardian," which is really an awesome book.  The rest... blah.  At least I know not to bother with the movie now.

I finally finished Goblet of Fire. You were right Julie, after the beginning, it got really interesting and this one was chock full of information. I have the Order of the Pheonix and will probably start it after i'm done with Catching Fire.

I also finished Duma Key by SK and I have to say it was well...dumbaa LOL but hey, they can't all be great.

The Hunger Games = My new favorite book ever.  I just finished it and am literally frothing at the mouth to get my hands on Catching Fire. I'll most likely have it read by the end fo the week and will join the rest of the world in waiting impatiently for book number three.  Seriously, in the most surprising way, this book just blew me away. Page after page after gory, brutal, amazing page.   LOVE.

^ It was awesome. I read half of Catching Fire in one sitting. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the third one.

This weekend I read Lament by Maggie Stiefvater and I really enjoyed it.  It is like a modern-day, US twist on Celtic folklore.  A few weeks ago I finished Shiver by the same author, and I liked that one a lot, too.  That one was about werewolves.

And Runaway (the last in the Airhead series by Meg Cabot) comes out in April. I hate finding a book I like when it first comes out and then it leaves you hanging with each installment. I've literally been waiting like three years now to finish the book.
