Title: New Year, so lets see what we accomplished Last Year!
Post by: Rose on January 17, 2010, 01:00:38 AM
So, I stumbled on Julie's old new year thread, from last year. Looked through, cause I was uberbored (and procrastinatin g), and realized I didn't really accomplish any resolution except one LOL.

http://absolutechaos.net/fictalk/index.php/topic,1580.0.html

Did you actually do what you had wanted to do last year?

Also, I'm pasting Julie's old survey, to do now that a year's passed. See if any answers change.

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2008 2009?

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 20082009).

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.

5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.

6.  What was the best story you discovered in 20082009?  Provide a link, and tell why you liked it.

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 20092010?  If so, what are they?

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?

Wow... that thread seems a lot older than just a year LOL.  I guess a lot has changed since then.  Thanks for putting up my survey again; I forgot all about that! LOL

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2008 2009?
Song For The Undead, that definitely is it. It's been a challenge, especially with the updating consistency we've kept with it, and some issues. But I am so proud of that story.

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.

Song For The Undead, no lie. http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9551

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 20082009).

Obviously, Undead, and you know, 00Carter is still on that list as well. I'm also proud of Just Another Day, if you can believe it. It's a piece of overdone fluff, but it's mine and it stuck with people I suppose, which I just realized last year. That's something to be proud of. It's not perfect, but it's mine.

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.

Born To Be is still that story LOL. Though now it's partly my own fault for not updating lately. http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8954

5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.

This is now harder, as I don't read like I used to LOL. Um....

6.  What was the best story you discovered in 20082009?  Provide a link, and tell why you liked it.

And here's where I go um....again

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.

Julie, again, actually. Writing with her, she amazes me all the time with what she comes up with and all the ways she makes sure something as crazy as zombies is as accurate as possible. She makes me work so hard at being the best writer I can be so I can match up.

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 20092010?  If so, what are they?

Rehab, I'd like to finish it LOL. Same with Divisions of Reality. Finish Season One of 00Carter (NOT gonna happen lmao, but I can dream)

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?

Definitely the fact I have no answers to the  questions about other stories. I just haven't had the time to read like I used to, and the stories that would get me to aren't updated much anymore.

Which I'm demanding you fill out LOL.

It does feel older, doesn't it? Feels weird.

LOL, I'm on it!

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2009?
Finally posting Song for the Undead and managing to update it consistently throughout the year.

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.
This is one of the most twisted chapters I've ever written.  I love it.  http://accidentalchaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9551&chapter=31

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 2009).
I'm proud of Undead because it went from a joke to a "serious" story, and it's the first collaboration I've done in like 9 years that actually gets updated frequently and will be finished someday in the next year or two.

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.
I don't have anything different to post here; the only stories I really care about are the ones I've talked about enough that they're not "undiscovered."

5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.
I can't think of one that is really undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  The stories I like are mostly classics or those that have already done well on AC.

6.  What was the best story you discovered in 20082009?  Provide a link, and tell why you liked it.
"Brian Potter and the Malevolent Musician": http://accidentalchaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9731
I love it because it combines my two favorite fandoms, Bsb and Harry Potter, in a way that is funny and clever.  I wish it would get updated more often!

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.
Tracy (DelphinaCarter) impresses me with how often she updates - on several different stories she has in the works, too.  I wish I could be that way again!  Looking at her profile on AC, she's only been a member for a year, and she's already racked up quite a few stories.  As someone who takes years to finish a story and has only really worked on two of them the last year, I admire that kind of productivity and prolificness!  http://accidentalchaos.net/viewuser.php?uid=1656

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 2010?  If so, what are they?
About the same goals I had last year:  1) get back into Secrets of the Heart or another story of my own so I can write the way I did with Broken and BMS (which probably won't happen till summer), 2) write more than 3 episodes of 00Carter this year, and I'll add a new one, 3) continue updating Undead at least once a fortnight (LOL I got to use the word "fortnight"!).

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?
Pretty much just the addition of Undead.  Undead was in the works at this time last year, but we hadn't started posting it yet, so I think I left it off last year's survey.

 1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2008 2009?
I guess finishing One In A Million, which I started in 2008, and writing most of The Frack and Frick Switch-- I only have another chapter or two to go.

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?
I'm proud of The Frack and Frick Switch.  I'd written romantic comedies before, but never a story that was mostly comedic, and I got some great feedback on it.

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 20082009).
Hmm... not sure.  I love different stories for different reasons.  Even stories I wrote years ago that aren't up to par with what I currently consider well-written are special to me.  Every story is different.

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.
This story is called As Long As You Love Me.  I started writing it in a notebook one summer years ago when I worked at the pool and ended up typing what I had and finishing the story. I changed the title from You Wrote the Book On Love.  Its one of the romantic comedies I was talking about having written.  It's just a classic boy meets girl story that you read when you want to be in a good mood and have a happy ending.  :)

5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.
I just looked for it, and I don't see the story or the author anywhere... ?  Hmm... I can't think of the title off of the top of my head, but it was a historical romance.  I read the first few chapters and thought it was creative. I'll post it if I find it.

6.  What was the best story you discovered in 20082009?  Provide a link, and tell why you liked it.
http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9934
Ten Things by Carter-Orange.  Its unfinished, and I haven't read all of what has been posted, but it seems creative, and I'm liking the voice of the story.

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.
Hmm... there have been several, but I haven't really been on that much.  I barely found time to update the story I was working on, so I haven't read as much as I would have liked.  I've been trying to make time and get on here more.

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 20092010?  If so, what are they?
I'm planning on finishing The Frack and Frick Switch this month, and then there are two other stories that are in progress.  I've had to put them on the back-burner, but I'd like to focus more on them this year.

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?
This is the first one I've filled out, so... No.  :)

Thank you!  You're right-- it hasn't been updated in forever!  That is actually one of the stories I was talking about focusing on this year.  Hopefully there will be plenty of chapters posted in 2010, and hopefully they will be worth reading.  LoL

You're welcome!  Don't worry about it, take your time...  But yes, I do hope you update more in 2010 - I'm sure they'll be worth reading when you do! :)

Well that was depressing to go back and read my old survey because since then, I don't think i've written or read much of anything unless I have had to for the awards. I am happy for all of you who have your writing mojo and for all the newer writers who are in the same happy place I used to be a few years back. Maybe one day i'll come out of hibernation and write something. I guess the only thing that's true is the whole I quit writing thing. lol how sad is that? :(

I have been at a standstill with everything, sadly. I have a few ideas for a new original fic and want to write my second chapter for the Lima Bean story but I have absolutely no drive to do it. I sit in front of the computer and start doing other things instead. It's like something is keeping me from starting and I haven't figured out why. It's annoying. I am pretty sure my fanfic days are over. I have no desire to write it anymore which sucks because I wanted to finish Protect and Serve, not that anyone was reading it anyway, but more for me.

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2009?
I think taking part in a few of the challenges on here and starting a new story called Ten Things.

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.
Personally, I think it was a one shot I wrote called Resistance.  It's not a BSB story, but really, it could be about anyone.  It's a historical story which was inspired by a song by Muse of the same title.

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 2009).
I'm quite proud of Ten Things because I'm having fun writing it.

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.
Most of them are undiscovered, lol.  But I guess it depends on what people like to read.

5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.

The Frick and Frack Switch by ForeverFrick is a great story and also Life After The Unexpected by Alota_Cookin is great too and is a prequel to Life According To Baylee which seems to be going down well on here.

6.  What was the best story you discovered in 2009?  Provide a link, and tell why you liked it.

It's got to be If We Were A Movie by Honey, which I came across a couple of weeks ago and loved from start to finish.  Also Song For The Undead which I'm completely hooked on, even though I'd never read a zombie story before.

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.
Hmm, I'd say Rose & Julie who are writing Song For The Undead, because their chapters are consistently amazing and they update regularly.

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions fo 2010?  If so, what are they?
Pick up where I left off on a couple of my other stories, and finish Ten Things :)

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?
Since last time, I think my writing has improved slightly and I feel more confident posting.

I hate that feeling.  I've never gone through a slump that has lasted very long, but I definitely know the feeling of wanting to write (or at least thinking I should) and sitting down and then not doing it, or not being able to, even when I know what to write.  The whole writer's block/no muse/no motivation thing is so frustrating.

I know what you mean.  I need a computer that's not hooked up to the internet because I sit down to write and think, "I'll check my email real quick..." which leads to facebook, which leads to...

Have you been reading a lot?  I know you said you hadn't very much as far as fan fiction goes, but I mean in general.  That is what usually inspires me to write-- I get into a good book and then I begin to form my own ideas.

^ Yes, actually I read all the time. I just re-read Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven today. I am hoping that by reading some of the greater novels, it'll inspire me to do something. So far, no luck lol

I have to sometimes take my internet icon off my quick launch bar, or at least hide it, so I have to think before I click on it.  I'm notorious for stopping mid-sentence to randomly go check Twitter or this forum or whatever, and then I get distracted LOL.  That's the only thing I miss about having dial-up - when I wasn't connected to the internet all the time, I got a lot more done LOL.

I can't even use that as an excuse. I don't really even spend a lot of time surfing all that much anymore. I think for me, i've kind of lost interest in the computer in general. I find after about 20 minutes, i'm ready to go do something else.

I go through phases... sometimes I could sit at the computer for hours and be perfectly content, and other days I'm hardly on the computer at all except to check my mail.

Writing is that way too... There are some days where, if I have nothing I need to do, I get going and can write all day.  It usually takes me about an hour to write a page, because I'm so anal about it and get distracted easily.  Yet there are days where I can knock off ten pages, which means at the end of the day, I've spent about ten hours writing.  That's when everything is flowing, and I'm happy, and it's great, and I write either until I finish the part or can't keep my eyes open anymore, and then I go to bed, and I get up in the morning, excited about writing some more, and... nothing.  I get nothing done the next day, even if all the other conditions are exactly the same.  Why is that?  It's so frustrating LOL.

I used to do that as well. LOL I don't know, it's weird.

I can blame lots of things. Maybe it's my uncomfortable computer chair, or the fact that I no longer live alone. My spare bedroom is very cold (that's where my computer is) Eh, I'll just blame Twilight lol

I blame my computer chair too. :(   It's not a bad chair; it's a spinny desk chair, and it's padded... but I think I got way spoiled when I had a laptop and spent all my time sitting or half-lying on my bed with it LOL.  So much more comfortable than sitting at a desk.  I can sit for hours if I'm actually DOING something, writing or whatever, but just reading... can't do it.  I can't remember the last time I spent hours at once reading a fanfic.  I think if I were to get engrossed in one, I could do it... but that doesn't happen very often anymore.

I know what you mean about the laptop.  When I first got mine was actually when I really started getting into fan fiction again.  I'd been wanting to (in college, there just wasn't enough time for it), but i hadn't really thought about how important the connection was until you just said it.

I really like being able to write in different settings- even if its just across the room.  And, it sounds weird, but having a laptop made me feel like more of a writer.

I totally know what you mean.  That was another nice part of having a laptop.  I remember sometimes when I was writing Broken, I would try sitting on the floor or in a different room with my laptop to write, and just the change in setting would help get me going again.  I miss being able to do that, too.

I did this last years, so I'm going to do it again.  :)

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2008 2009?
Writing Mistakes Made ... Lessons Learned. I've just past my one year mark on it and have almost 100 chapters. I'm kind of proud of myself for keeping with it this long.
2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.
I have to say MMLL, it's the only writing I did in 2009.
3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 20082009).
Honestly I don't think I can answer this. I go back and reread stuff in my files and I KNOW i could have done better.
4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9227  Shimly. I know it's completely corny and chessy, but I still like it.
5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.
I don't know if they are underappreciat ed but I defintly think summer03 and summer are great writers.

http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9497&warning=4  summer's Once in a Blue Moon. Truly a great story. She is an amazingly gifted writer, her sense of detail in just incredible.

summer... see comments in #6.
8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 20092010?  If so, what are they?
To write better and to be more detailed. I wish I could write like summer. I also want to learn how to create the bridges to connect all the ideas for specific stories that are swirling around in my brain.
Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?

Nope.. I still need to learn to write better.

I did this last years, so I'm going to do it again.  :)
5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.

Was summer03 writing a Nick-centered historical romance at some point?  It was set in an Austen-esque time period.  I couldn't find it on her page, so I'm not sure it she took it down or if I'm thinking of someone else.

Yes that is summer03. It was AJ and Nick centered, you are correct. For personal reasons she took down her stories but she is slowly adding them back. If you would like, I can send her an email and tell her you are asking for that story. It's called "Summer Romance".

I thought I was going crazy when I couldn't find that story anywhere! LoL Yes, that'd be great if you could. Thanks!   :)

I was reading that one too and can't find it either.

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2008 2009?

Getting myself writing again at all!

Mare, I totally get where you are right now. I went through such a dry writing-spell (part with health reasons, part just...no motivation...I really thought my fanfic and possibly even my writing in general was over and done with. Even if it is over for fanfic for you, though, I really hope you do continue to write your original stories!

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.

Tough call, but I'd go with Unbuttoned (http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9830). It was my first attempt at a "romance" story, and I thought it turned out really well.

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 20082009).

Overall, I might actually still choose Ground Zero.

But for this year, I would have to go with The DiNozzo Experience (TM) (http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9884). I surprised myself with this one (and surprise myself now as I'm choosing it...) It's a story I never imagined I'd write for many reasons (biggest one of which being that it's intentionally slashy, which is closely followed by it's romance at all...) I'm proud that I managed to accomplish both of those objectives and yet managed to keep the characters (almost) completely in character (except for well...the slash, but...erm...th ey're stil really close!)

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.

12 Kisses (http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9974)  I tried to capture the feel of some of the old madcap comedies as the story flows through the 12 kisses between 12 different couples (rather 11 couples and one "threesome"  :o )

5.  Switching over to praise for other writers, give us a link to someone ELSE'S story that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed.  Again, tell us why you think this story is worthy of being read.

Pieces to the Puzzle (http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9699) by Honey. I thought this was a really well done Castle fic. Kelly manages to capture the characters, and yet also manages to make a normally unflappable character believably vulnerable.

6.  What was the best story you discovered in 20082009?  Provide a link, and tell why you liked it.

There Loomed an Ogre (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5035736/1/There_Loomed_An_Ogre). It was very intense and terrifically angsy without going too over the top.

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.

I'll admit that I haven't kept up with many here on AC (sorry, just not into Backstreet fic...:( )  But Honey impressed me with her original works!)

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 20092010?  If so, what are they? Just to keep writing. I'd still really like to finish all the In Progress stories I've left open, but...I admit that it's unlikely that I will find the motivation/inspiration for some of them, and when I've tried to force it, it's only made me stop writing until I give in and write the stories that I do have the inspiration for...

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why? My primary fandom has changed; I finally found a fandom that seems to have virtually unlimited plot bunnies for me to chase after. And I've also started focusing more on writing short stories--which has been very good for me in that endings are usually the hardest for me...and has kept me from starting so many stories that don't get finished. I've given myself more freedom to write what I want to write, and celebrate my successes rather than dwelling on my failures.

Amen! LoL  That was 2008 for me. I feel like writing is extra rewarding when its been awhile and you get back into it.

1.  What was your biggest writing- or fanfic-related accomplishment of 2008 2009?

Hmm... I would have to say finishing Seduction. Because this would be one of my first Fanfic's where it centers around Brian. I am pretty proud of it.

2.  What do you feel was the best piece of writing you did in 2009?  It can be a whole story or just a certain chapter or scene.  Give us a link or, if it's a really short excerpt (like a paragraph), post it here.

My collab with Sapphire I think we did a pretty good job.

3.  Which of your own stories are you most proud of, and why?  (This doesn't have to be one written in 20082009).

I will say My Mona Lisa. Still very proud of that one.

4.  Give us a link to one of your own stories that you feel is undiscovered or underappreciat ed, and tell us why you think it's worthy of being read.

This is hard because I have two... Heart Bandit and Taking back my love... I guess Heart Bandit... I just think its a good plot pretty proud I came up with it. hehe.

hmm... I've read many here like Bound by honor by Kevmylove....l ove it. Just the way she tells it it gets you hooked.

7.  Name an AC author who impressed you this year (with their writing, their updating, whatever it may be LOL), and tell us why.

Sapphire with Mistakes learned...less ons learned. She's been doing an awesome job.

8.  Do you have any writing- or fanfic-related resolutions for 20092010?  If so, what are they?

I need to write with more detail... or I think.

Add on Question: Has anything changed since the last time you answered this? Why?

Well this is my first time doing it so nope...

******

I will be posting Summer Romance back on. Thanks for the email Sapphire. I actually didn't think anyone was reading it.

wow this thread (and last years thread) depress me.  I basically read/wrote NOTHING last year.  I've lost my love for fan fic altogether and can't write anything original either. I think a lot of my problem is stress. My real life has been more than a little chaotic. If it would just settle down then maybe I could get over the big brick wall in front of me and actually write something. At this point I'd probably settle for even reading a fan fic. Honestly I don't see it happening.

PS. Thanks Steph and Zak. As always you are way to kind to me!

hahaha with my husband out of town 90% of the time and baby number three on the way and making me barf 5-6 times a day? Doubtful. But on the bright side, my book is being released this year. I'm hoping that sparks some inspiration. Plus... I'm *supposed* to be writing Jamie 2 .... erm.... yeah... I need to just man-up and write a fan fic. (or update one of my unfinished ones... :-[ ) Anybody want to come over and stand behind me and somehow make me focus?

Oh god, that sounds awful!  I hope the sickness stops soon :)

Good news about your book, hope it will be available over here in the UK as I never got a chance to read it when you had it posted up on AC.

I'm sure the inspiration will come back to you, but it will probably be when you are feeling better and have got over the sickness part of the pregnancy.  I imagine the last thing on your mind is updating fanfics when you are feeling like shit!

You're publishing a book?  That's great!!  Do you know when this year?  And what is the book about?

I'll answer this one in my update thread so we don't get off topic and make Julilly or Mare have to smite us with a sick...  I've been really good about not hijacking threads since Dee left. Hmm....  :)

OMG Julie that was such a nice compliment! I'm so honored you thought I am impressive lol. I haven't been here very long and I know I'm not the best writer in the world, but I do pride myself on trying to update frequently. This is due to the fact that I have a friend who motivates me into updating....mo stly on my By My Side series. As for Figured You Out, I write that one almost completely on my own. Its something different, I know. But all the nice compliments are great for motivating me to write! So thank you again! You are awesome!

You're welcome!  I still admire people who update regularly, and you still do.  It gives me more confidence in reading your in-progress stories, like FYO, cause I know I'm not gonna be left hanging forever.
