Title: Are you up for a challenge? Come in if you are brave!
Post by: nicksgal on March 30, 2007, 12:49:25 AM
So, after keeping up with the "What do you all read?" thread, I think it's time a challenge was posed:

Read a work you would never read!

And I don't mean bad grammar/spelling fics... I mean genre.

When have we all gotten so picky that we aren't willing to try something new? And yes, I say we meaning me also. Of course, if I had the time, I would read work by you all, because I consider you friends. But that's beside the point...

Let that be a challenge to everyone.

And this should be interesting. :)

I think it's a wonderful idea! At least give it a sporting chance. I have never read fantasy before, but am adoring Pandora's Box! And I also loved Ground Zero even though I don't like those kidnap torture types... So you never know, you might surprise yourself!

*And if it's AU's you don't like, might I reccomend reading the first episode of 00Carter   It's not that long and highly entertaining!

lmao Kelly!

Hmm one that I don't normally read lol...well that rules out all the fantasy/sci stories..

Guess that means it'll be a romance.

Well Kelly, I did say I've been meaning to look at yours.. (sorry Dee, the ones that intrigue with yours are the ones in the genres I normally read  :P)

That's a good idea. I did that very recently. I tried reading something romance-ish.

Which for me means I must searh out a total stranger... La la la la la la...

Ooh...What'd you read? And how did it go? Were you turned away by it or were you pleasantly surprised? or Somewhere in the middle?

Huh. Maybe these should be questions that we should all post the answers to once we've read something out of our norm of reading. Yes? Is that okay? :)

and??? Doesn't sound like it was very promising... haha Oh well at least you tired :) If you can't get through it, then you can't get through it. I say try, but if you do and you just can't get into it, then don't waste your time forcing yourself to finish it.

I guess for me I might have to try and read a slash...   hmmm.... this should be interesting.

I would rather not say what it was. After the first chapter I got excited because it seemed to be boy centered but then by the second one it went back to the old formula so I lost interest. It just didn't do anything for me at all, but at least I tried.

I have tried before lol this isn't the first time i've read a romance. I have even read slash fics before. That's how I have come to the conclusion I do not like some of these things. lol

but yes, I did try and will again lol

you know, that makes me think... I wonder if I could write a completely boy centered romance.  When I think about it, I think all my stories are girl centered ones. Well Whitmore Lake, and A Christmas Miracle, I would say are both kinda split down the middle, but still center a lot around the girl.

I should try it... I should write a totally boy centered romance. It would be hard though, cause the thing about romance is, you're supposed to have both people's perspective.  But I do tend to focus a lot more on one than the other and in my case it's always the female. Hmmm.... really I need to try this now. :) Yay! Thanks a lot Mare, now I'm gonna go and start another story... Like I need to do that.  :D

I know what you mean. I started this story (Hensley) and I didn't mean for it to turn out the way that it's turning out. The first chapter was all Brian, and then I made my uh oh mistake and had the second chapter be about the girl. Which makes me mad at myself, but I don't think I want to remove/edit it...yet. Fortunately, I've come to my senses, and the story is finally getting to its suspense part!

But yay for you trying and trying again (soon?) LOL

I never, ever in a million years ever read slash, but, when I got into East Water Convergence, I thought I'd try out Kid Sinclair's other work. Some of it was both slash and normal romance but always with this dark, underlying psychological drama going on between the characters and the outside world.  Suddenly, I was hooked (and I didn't even feel squicky reading about it--probably because she never wrote a blatant sex scene--which is good!) My favorite was called "The Collectors" and it had Nick, Brian, Britney, Christina, JC, and Justin in the story. It was weird to be reading *N Sync/Britney/Christina fic, but the story was so good that I forgot that element. Nick, Brian, Britney, JC, and Justin all had these psychological powers of "collecting" everything from inspiration, hope, dreams, hearts, and (I think this was Brian's collection) intellect. They would be really careful about what they were collecting because it was pieces of other people's lives that they were taking. Anyway, JC and Nick were "involved" and Nick collected hearts. The problem with collecting hearts was that people cannot survive for too long without their emotional hearts...so there was a dilemma with Nick being unable to control his collecting abilities...

Anyhoo, the story was really interesting and dark! Unfortunately, it's not up anywhere because Kid took all of her stuff down and shut it all down...so...al as, it's all gone. *sigh* But, there, I've read something different!

I know exactly what you mean because that's exactly the way I am (how are we on the same brain wavelength? LOL). But I'm going to try really, really hard to make "Hensley" be more or less focused on Brian...so good luck with your new story LOL

I've heard so many great things about East water Convergence. I am really not big on crossovers either lol yes you can all kick my butt for being picky, but those two were so incredibly nice that I remember always wanting to give it a try. Of course by the time I decided to do that, it was gone.

It started off awkwardly because I think Kid and Taylor were trying to figure out how to write together and then they split and Kid's writing was incredible! I'm so sad to see all those beautifully written, and deeply emotional, psychological stories disappear:(  They are some of the best that I've ever read...

Good challenge!  I'm on spring break this week (which will go by too fast cause I still have a ton to do as always), so I will have more time than usual - I'm up for it!  I'm not sure what kind of story to read, cause honestly, I think I've read SOMETHING of every genre, but it should probably be an AU, a sci-fi or fantasy, or a really gushy, happy romance with no promise of impending drama or doom.

I'm already kinda reading one I wouldn't read. The one with BSB & the Supernatural people - haha. Dean & Sam. Never seen the show, but they seem entertaining.

And fics y'all never read? May I suggest TMNT [Ninja Turtles]??? Lol.

Okay, I took the challenge.  I read a story on AC that:

- Is listed as a fantasy
- Is really a cliched teenybopper romance
- Has a poorly written summary
- Has a total Mary Sue female lead named after the author
- Features conversations written out in script format
- Has not been updated in almost a year

There are at least 6 turn-offs that, all together, would most definitely make me run screaming from a story, but I read it anyway.  And it was... entertaining.  Inspiring.  Probably not the way the author meant it to be, but entertaining and inspiring nonetheless.

I will avoid mentioning the title at the risk of offending the author, although I don't think she's registered on the forum.  But just in case...

Another genre I'm usually not into is AU, which is also part of the reason I don't get into a lot of fantasy, sci-fi, vampire fics and such, cause often the genres go hand in hand.  So after reading a "fantasy," I did a search for AUs and came across "Satin and Silk" by Julilly.  Now I have to say, while I normally don't seek out AUs to read, the summary did appeal to me because the story is set in the 40s, and I like that time period.  So I read it, and it's absolutely adorable!!  I truly loved it.  So yay!! ;D

I have read East Water Convergence as well as that famous fic called Oreos for Breakfast. Both of them I stopped half way and not because they're poorly written, the girls are obviously great writers, I just lost interest somewhere along the way. I even liked how Oreos for Breakfast started out as...the girl character felt real to me (and the whole making a cover of Larger than Life (i think that's the song) rocks) but when it started to become all abt the sex (on the plane, in the closet, backstage...), I gave up.

My real challenge is to read a pure slash and then a romance. I read Sarah's (starbeamz2) romance fic a while back, before this challenge was up, and i liked where it was going, i even told her so for the first 5 chapters that i read. I am planning to continue where I left off once i finished off a fic of mine, because for me personally, when im writing a certain genre, i need to be in that element all the time when im reading fanfics from other writers, if i go astray and get too deep on a fic that is not of that genre that im writing about, i tend to lose my muse and would have problem writing for the next few weeks and i really cant afford to do that, lol. So currently I'm reading Sarah's new crossover fic cause it's of the same genre as the one im writing right now.

So next, slash. *deep breath*

I always cringe when there's too much sex in too many places *shudders* I'm not one for graphically depicted sex scenes because then I feel like I may as well be watching porn LOL I know what you mean about EWC, mers, because I almost left it alone and then it started really getting going, so I thought I'd stick around longer. But it's gone now *sniffle* Good story.

Aww, thanks for all your awesome reviews for Monster, even though it might distract you from Children Like Me. It's not as serious, but, hey, if it helps you hold onto that muse...YAY!

Slash, like I said, is something that totally depends on the author. I've read one really bad slash, and then a bunch of really good ones.  The really good ones were from the same author, though, and the romance wasn't the main story arc so that was cool. Romance can get hard to read (and write) if it gets too cliched and then it's like every other story out there. As long as the couple don't have explicit sex every chapter or something and aren't super lovey-dovey, I can usually handle it. Usually LOL

I tried to read a slash/fantasy fic which again shall remain nameless cuz I don't want to insult the author. (Although it wasn't the fact that it was written bad. It's just me LOL) I figured ok... Slash and fantasy are prolly the two genres I REALLY don't read too much although I have read excellent stories in both catergories in the past. (There was a great slash I read a few years ago, I forget the name, but it was a Nick/AJ and it focused more on how the media reacted to them coming out and I think I enjoyed it more cuz the characters were so strong you kind of forgot it was Nick and AJ and you felt really bad for them. But yea... even at that I had to skim the sex parts) Anyway I'm rambling again...

Point is that I only got maybe half a page in before I was like OMG I can't do this! LOL How sad is that?

^ not sad at all! I remember one time I was supposed to help judge for an awards and the category I got stuck with was slash and I got through maybe two sentences of a story and had to let the person who was in charge know that I wasn't going to be able to be impartial since I couldn't get through even a paragraph without laughing lol

Some genres just aren't for everybody.

That's me too.  Slash is the one genre I can't take seriously.  I just can't.  I've read one really good story where Brian was gay, but it wasn't a SLASH.  He didn't get it on with any of the other guys; it was more about the emotional stuff he went through and the reactions of others and so on.  That kind of stuff is fine, but it's when the guys are in bed together calling each other cutesy pet names that I just can't handle it - it's too funny, even when it's not supposed to be!

Slash in any fandom is amusing to me. There's another fandom I tried reading it in and I about died laughing because it made no sense.... Mainly because the characters that were paired together shared the same body... But still... :D

For me, it's more or less a "one true pairing" type of thing. In one of my original stories, I have a gay couple, though one is dead and they are hardly the main characters.... Anyway, to me, their relationship is okay, because they're supposed to be with each other.

Imagining Brian or Kevin paired up with one of the others is weird to me because they're married and already have their "one true pairing" so to speak.

I read a slash too. Well, I tried. I actually got like five chapters in or something. AJ was in love with Brian and at first it didn't seem so bad cause he was struggling with it and it was emotional and stuff. But then Brian started ahving the feelings back, no mind the fact that he ahd a wife and kid, and that was just way too hard to believe and then Howie was gay too and he had a boyfriend so AJ was always going to him for advice and he was trying to help AJ win Brian...

anyway, I just can't buy it. I tried, really I did, but I just can't get into it. It's hard to like a story if you just can't accept anything that you're reading as possible. Plus the whole guys getting excited when the other touches them and calling each other terms of endearment?? Yeah, then I'm laughing in places I shouldn't be and it's like why am I reading this when I could be reading Under My Skin?

(is it a shameless plug if it's not your story? ;) )

Anyway, good challenge, but I failed miserably... I'll probably never read another slash again. But at least now I know, right?

Okay...now that everyone else has admitted that they had bad slash experiences, I feel weird having actually enjoyed slash, even if it was the rest of the story that I enjoyed instead of the fact that Nick was getting it on with whatever male there was. *cringe*

I know what you mean about seeing them as "your Boys" and being unable to read about them that way, Mel. I think the writer whose slash I enjoyed had written them in an AU and made the reader see them as just characters and not as the BSB, so that's probably why I made it through those.

Kelly, I think I know which slash you were talking about because I laughed all over the place in the first couple chapters and couldn't continue.  I don't think that's fair to the writer, so...yeah. I don't think I could read slash from anyone but Kid Sinclair LOL

Oh...and I don't think it's a shameless plug when it's not your story! Under My Skin is a great story and, Mel, the last chapter was really, really GOOD! Keep going!

Aww to be fair to slash i'm just as easily giggled out by visuals as well. Not that I don't picture the guys getting it on with girls because I do lmao, but I just don't want to read about it. Sex scenes always make me laugh for some reason, especially when the word 'loins' is anywhere in the chapter!

As far as the incest thing goes, i'll never understand that! One of the slash stories I tried was supposedly a 'classic' that everyone loves and I should have known from past experience I tend to not always love what everyone else does, but I tried it anyway and it was just so weird. Kevin was so creepy in it and of course I stopped when Brian called Kevin for a 'night' visit! And they were all so hell bent on not letting Nick know they were all gay because he was so young and meanwhile Kevin and Brian are going at it! lmao

aww don't feel bad about enjoying the slash Sarah. A lot of people must or else there wouldn't be so much of it out there. And I totally agree with Mare on the visuals thing... sex... I can't write it, I can't read it... it's just silly. A love scene here and there doesn't turn me off from a story, but when it's like every other chapter and the story starts to sound more like some cheesy porno then I lose interest there too. But slash visuals????? That's like the best of both worlds -lol

Yeah, exactly, I think that's why it's weird to me too.  If two of the guys were openly gay, then okay, write all the slash you want.  Even if they weren't involved with each other in real life, it would at least be feasible that they COULD one day hook up, if they hadn't already.

But when two of them are married and the other three all have girlfriends, it just doesn't really work for me LOL.

^ yes it is and on top of that I do believe it is also one of those fics that portrayed Nick as a 16 year old who falls asleep on Kevin's chest as he pats his back lmao

*shakes head*

LMAO so Kevin carries sleepy little 16-year-old Nick to bed before he goes into the next room and gets it on with Brian?

Basically, yes lol Kevin gets it on with all of them except for Nick who is apparently too innocent to touch.

Thanks for the shameless plugging Kelly and Sarah!  ;D

Yea I mean as I mentioned before if its a well written slash and more about the emotions of being gay and all of that I could get through it and may even think it original and enjoyable, but if I'm getting slapped with graphic details about how Nick is getting turned on thinking about Kevin I want to just cover my eyes. And its not anything about sexual content. If it was a girl I'd be able to read it just fine... I think its just the mental image and the not wanting to picture them that way.

Like I said as far as sexual content it doesn't really bother me. I do dabble with it w/ my stories, but I try to be tasteful about it. I can read visuals to a certain extent. Its when they reach the really messed up "Nick using a girl as a sex slave" level I get turned off cuz thats just really messed up. I kid you not, I once read a Nick vizzy where Nick actually slipped a date rape drug in this girls drink and the author played it off like it was incredibly sexy. Uhmm no... That's illegal LOL So, yea as long as its in good taste. I'll admit every now and then I enjoy the hot sex scene, but within boundaries.

And I can't take terms like "loins" seriously either Mare. When people get all too poetic and think they are writing a Harlequin romance novel I usually want to stop reading too LOL

Ahh, I hate the creepy ones!!!  Phone sex and bondage and stuff like that are major turn-offs to me too, especially if it's supposed to be romantic.  I just think it's creepy.  And yeah, "loins" makes me laugh too LOL.  I like when those parts can be mentioned without using certain words...

Ditto to everything you just said. I've read just about every kind of romance out there (werewolves, vampires, ANYTHING) and every kind of way to describe sex, and I have to say that my favorite is definitely when a scene is written without explicitly stating every last physical detail because i gag when i see the word "loins" or "he mounted her" is another one that just kills me. NOOOO!! *runs screaming* LOL I think I've written a sex scene three or four times maybe, and I just can't bring myself to do it anymore because I squick myself out LOL But, I totally agree with the ick factor that everyone else brought up...especiall y the Muppet sex. *covers eyes*

LMAO I just ended my Why chapter with Kevin mounting Kristin. Oopsies! See? This is why Mare stays away from all that stuff!  :P at least I stayed away from any loins talk.

Yea you can't take that stuff seriously. I'm very on the fence about the whole sex scene issue cuz admittedly I do include sexual content in my stories. I list it as graphic to cover myself, but there are definitely WAAAAY more detailed stories out there. I'd like to think I write them tastefully. I definitely leave out all the Harlequin romance type langugage, but I also try not to sound completely crude either. Yet, my goal is still to write something "hot" so all my readers are satisfied. I have some who shy away from sex scenes and others who tell me I'm not graphic enough and demmand more. To be completely honest they're a bitch to write because it really takes a lot of description and detail and you have to be so picky about the way you word things.

Anyway point is I've read some great fics with objectionable scenes and I don't rule out a story based on sexual content unless it begins to overshadow the plot.

LMAO! Mare, you made them sound like horses or something...NO!! Well, next time (if there is a next time LOL), you should just have him *consults romantic novel at hand* "he drew her against him" or "he pulled her beneath him" (not one of my faves, but it's not as weird a mental image as 'mount') or...well, I could keep flipping through the novel and find others, but i'm sure we don't need to have a sex scene writing tutorial on this board LOL

and, yes, i really did go through the one romance novel in my dorm room. I can't help it, I'm an addict!

readers actually demand "hotter" more explicit scenes?! that's...okay, i can see people doing that. in high school, when all of my friends were really into the romance novels, we used to call them "porn with a plots" because some of those Harlequin romances really can be pornographic with the way the writers use certain words and *shudders just thinking about it*...yeah. they really are a pain to write, though, because you don't want to sound too dirty or too cheesy. I just got to a point where i didn't want to worry about them anymore, so i quit. but, then, writing a kissing scene can be equally annoying, too.

LMAO at this thread turning from a challenge into a discussion on sex scenes!

LOL the first "sex scene" I wrote was the parody one in Not Another Teenybopper Fanfic, and I seriously did have one of my mom's trashy romance novels in my hand the whole time.

Ya even on Sexcapades which hasn't had sexual content in it, but a lot of sexual innuendos, a reviewer wrote something like "When they actually do it make it much more detailed."  ??? It was like Uhmm yea...

I jokingly say that I learned everything i needed to know about sex from BSB fan fics LMAO

If I had to pick a story out of my genre... it would definitely be sci-fi. And I shall read one when I have time to myself (I'm at work right now and calls can come in at any moment and I HATE having my reading interrupted).

My friend Ed (her real name is Erin) is obsessed with romance novels. I actually read one of hers back in high school, just for the Hell of it. And... get this... the plot was basically about a jelly bean aphrodesiac. It got you hot and wild for hours! LMAO. It was hilarious!
