Title: Part one of the 2014 summer reading challenge! The participants!
Post by: mare on April 20, 2014, 07:09:38 AM
Happy Easter and Happy BSB anniversary!

I decided to post this a little early to give you more time to figure out what you'd like to submit to the challenge and also hopefully give people who do not know about it, time to sign up to the forum and participate. So I'm asking for all of you to let everyone on AC know about this challenge. If you have a friend who regularly posts on AC but skips the forum or regularly reads stories but does not come on here. This is for them too!

How will it work?

If you are interested in participating in the challenge this year all you have to do is fill out the form below. I would like you to choose anywhere from 1 to 5 stories of yours that you feel deserve the chance to be read. You probably want to avoid stories that are really popular and well read because the chances of someone picking it as a challenge will be slim, but even still if it does fall under that category but yet you feel there are some who have avoided it until now, add it to the list.

Obviously if you've only written one or two stories, just use those!

Once you have filled out the form, you MUST participate in the challenge. Even if no one picks one of your stories you are agreeing to read two of the ones posted. Yes I said two. Because you're not really being assigned an author, this year I'd like you to pick TWO stories to read from the list. You cannot pick two stories by the same author though. If you are a reader and not a writer you must pick THREE

* There will be an exception to this rule - depending on which stories you pick, I may have you only read one if it's more than 40 chapters in length and or the word count is exceptionally high. I will probably put an (*) next to those stories.

The reading rules pretty much are the same as always:

Once you commit to a story you have to see it all the way through to the end and give feedback along the way. Feedback which consists of more than "Great job!" or "Can't wait to read the next chapter!" Real feedback having to do with what you just read. This year to help those of you along who struggle with that, We'll post some examples of how to leave constructive criticism. We want everyone to get the most out of this challenge and to the authors, the feedback is key.

I will be leaving you 'friendly' reminders to do so!

You may pick something you started reading but never finished. I mean just started, maybe only got to the first few chapters and then fell behind and stopped. Please don't pick something you've already read all the way through or only have a few chapters to go before you're done. Where's the challenge in that?

Try to pick something that's slightly out of your comfort zone, but it's okay if you just go with something you might have just missed the first time through.

So, there ya go ladies! If you plan on participating, fill out the form below by Wednesday, May 14th!

If you are including more than one story put them all on ONE form. You can always edit your post to include them later but it'll be less confusing that way. Remember you can choose up to 5 stories to submit for this challenge.

I know I probably don't have to say this part but just in case, Don't paste this entire post with your form, just this bottom portion!

Thanks!!! :)

This year's participants so far:

carterkid
DelphinaCarter
Ritz (reader only)
Carter-Orange
Mare
emily_michele
Julilly

Rose

Happy Reading!  :)

*Do not submit a story that is less than 10 chapters long or something you just started posting. We do not want to have to wait for updates during the summer. People should be able to read at their own leisure. It doesn't have to be complete, but complete enough...

You may submit one shots but if you do, you need to submit at least 5 -10 of them together as a compilation  otherwise there's not much for the participant reading it to do.

Submission #1:

Story you are submitting (including a link):

Incomplete http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9526

Give us a quick summary: Nick is in a coma and has a strange experience in a alternate universe.

Who is the main character? Nick but the whole group is in it.

What genre is it? Angst, Comedy, Drama

How many chapters? 18

Is it complete? Yes

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)

somewhat on the short side.

What do you like best about your story?

It's very old school, lots of cheese and bromance.

Would you consider it popular?

No, it was the first story I'd ever posted to AC. I wasn't well known then.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read?

I want people to see how much I have grown as a writer. My writing when I was first starting on AC was a bit cringe worthy but I am my own worst critic. I want to see if anyone feels the same way.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)

It's a bit on the weird side, and I use a lot of really bad fanfic cliches. There is even a lovely "singing Nick out of the coma" scene.

Submission #2:

Story you are submitting (include a link):

When I grow Up: http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10595

Give us a quick summary: Nick wishes he was an adult so people stop treating him like a child. Based on the film 13 Going On 30.

Who is the main character? Nick, but the other boys are included.

What genre is it? Comedy

How many chapters?

Is it complete? Yes

Are your chapters long or short (long- 2,000 words or more) In the middle.

What do you like best about it? It was a fun story to write and some of the scenes came out really well.

Would you consider it popular? Not really. It was a story I wrote for fun.

Why are you choosing this one? Mare had suggested that I include it a few months back in one of the question threads so I decided to see if anyone else would like to.

Anything else we should know about it? (sexual, slash, etc)

This story is somewhat a parody so I don't expect it to be taken seriously. Its mostly a fun read.

Submisson #3:

Story you are submitting (including a link):

Jizzle Of Oz: http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10417

Give us a quick summary: Direct Parody of The Wizard Of Oz starring Nick as "Dorothy".

Who is the main character? Nick but the group is also included.

What genre is it? Comedy

How many chapters? 11

Is it complete? Yes.

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more) Short

What do you like best about your story? It's old school cheese which I love.

Would you consider it popular? It had decent feedback, but no.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read?  -I thought it would be a fun and something different.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)  - It is a direct parody of The Wizard Of Oz, so if you don't like that this isn't for you.

Submission #4:

Story you are submitting (including a link):

Weird World

http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10854

Give us a quick summary: Kevin is involved in a plot against Nick and the rest of the group.

Who is the main character? Nick and Kevin but the group is inclided.

What genre is it? Action/Adventure, Drama

How many chapters? 32

Is it complete? No

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)  Medium length

What do you like best about your story?  Its very unique and has a interesting storyline.

Would you consider it popular? Not really.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read? Because I have been stuck for about a year or so and would like to finish it. I don't know where to go to achieve that.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc) it has a lot of violence.

Eventually I'll have five but wanted to post the two I know for sure I want to submit now.

Pen name: Mare

1) The Importance of Fly Fishing
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=3655
Give us a quick summary:
Kevin invites Nick on a fishing trip to Kentucky to bond.
Who is the main character?
Kevin and Nick only
What genre is it?
Dramedy
How many chapters?
21
Is it complete?
yes
Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
long
What do you like best about your story?
I love exploring the relationship between Nick and Kevin because I think it's so complex. That's all this story is so I hope it appeals to anyone who loves these two as much as I do.
Would you consider it popular?
I think it did okay but I also think a lot of people did skip it because it was only those two.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
Because I remember really loving this one when I was writing it.
Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Nope, not that I can think of. Just that the other three boys are noticeably absent
This is a link to a short story that goes with this one as a bonus lol
Fishing Again
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=6705&chapter=1

2)Shadow Woods
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=5902
Give us a quick summary:
The boys head out for a weekend camping trip to a secluded place called Shadow Woods where strange events and some mysterious visitors send the guys into an interesting journey, both comical and terrifying.
Who is the main character?
Nick/group
What genre is it?
Suspense/Humor
How many chapters?
25
Is it complete?
Yes
Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
Long
What do you like best about your story?
The cliffhangers and plot twists
Would you consider it popular?
Not too popular but did okay.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
Honestly, because I have changed it into an original fic. I submitted it to a contest where it came in as a runner up, I'm going to try to send it out to some publishers so it would be nice to get feedback and see what people think even though there are some differences between the two.
Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Can be a little disturbing if you aren't into that kind of thing.
*Also this is a link to a short story prequel that can be read after the novel unless you want the main plot twist to be given away
Into the Woods
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8577

3) Living at the Top
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8216
Give us a quick summary:
The story is told from each boy's POV and how they dealt with their time away from each other during their hiatus. (At least I think it is. Please don't hate me if I'm wrong. I wrote this one a very long time ago and my summary on AC doesn't really help lol)
Who is the main character?
It's a group fic. They all have equal time.
What genre is it?
drama/angst
How many chapters?
25
Is it complete?
Yes
Are your chapters long or short?
short
What do you like best about your story?
I do believe it's the first story where I gave everyone equal footing. So, in that way it was a challenge but also paved the way for stories like A Million Little Things and Why Id' do it All Again.
Would you consider it popular?
Not really. At this time, I was completely unknown for the most part.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
I like to pick at least one very old story if nothing else to remind myself of how far I've come. lol
Anything else we should know about it?
Not that I can remember.

4) A selection of some of my short stories  I guess We'll call this volume one? LOL
(all of them are one chapter only and anywhere from 1500 - 3,000 words)

One is lost, One is broken, One is a prisoner, Two are trapped
Who is the main character?
The entire group
What genre is it?
Suspense, Action, Drama
How many chapters?
40
Is it complete?
Yes
Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
long
What do you like best about your story?
My villain!
Would you consider it popular?
Maybe, not as popular as my older stuff.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
Honestly I was having a heck of a time deciding between this one and What Lurks but I think most of the people doing this challenge have read that one and not sure about this one. And I absolutely loved writing this one. It came very easy to me! I'm proud of it.
Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Not that I can think of.

Bumping this up as a reminder that the date these submissions need to be posted is the 14th. That will give us enough time to pick our stories to read and get started by June 1.

Remember the more stories you submit and the more people we get to participate, the higher the probability that your story will be chosen by someone so get the word out there! :)

I really hope more people join in cause so far you guys have read most of my stuff LOL. I wanted to submit my sci-fi but I failed in posting enough to actually do so. Oh well. My own fault for letting real life get in the way.

Pen name: Rose (I'm so original LOL)

*1. Song For The Undead
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9551&index=1

Give us a quick summary:
The zombie apocalypse has finally come. This is the story of ten people from different worlds, only together can they take on this new one...and survive.

Who is the main character?
Group Story

What genre is it?
Horror, Alternate Universe

How many chapters?
Errm...106 lol.

Is it complete?
Not yet.

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
They vary depending on the content. From about 2,000 to about 7,000 words range wise.

What do you like best about your story?
I like the journey, I feel like the characterizati on is it's strongest point.

Would you consider it popular?
Semi - it averages about 6 or less reviews a chapter overall.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
I feel like Julie and I could use a fresh perspective on it.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Other than violence and a bit graphic at times? I can't think of anything.

2. Remember Me This Way
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10108

Give us a quick summary:
Life only offers so many chances, and Nick is on his last.

Who is the main character?
Group Fic but it's centered around Nick

What genre is it?
Drama, Angst

How many chapters?
Forty Three

Is it complete?
Yes

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
Long-ish. Most are in the 2000 word range.

What do you like best about your story?
I love the emotion, I feel like I captured it in this story better than I have in any other so far.

Would you consider it popular?
Absolutely.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
I debated. I had it in a challenge once before, and it's my best known story (not a collab). The concept is one I have loved since I wrote it and I've since always considered trying to do an Original Fiction take on it. A lot would have to change but...anywho, the more feedback I get, especially from those who hadn't clicked on it originally, the better.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Keep tissues close by.

3. Walked Out Of My Dreams
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10274&index=1

Give us a quick summary:
After a tragedy, Brian's life changes in ways he never could've predicted.

Who is the main character?
Brian, Nick

What genre is it?
Drama

How many chapters?
About 15

Is it complete?
Yes

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
Longish, some are short. Most about 1500 - 2000 words

What do you like best about your story?
I really like the concept

Would you consider it popular?
I think it did okay, it's more a Brian story so no.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
Because I feel, looking back at it, disatisfied about the ending. I feel like I could've done it better.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Nope

4. A collection of my scattered horror oneshots so...The Torture Files? lol
(Some of these are short, some are longer, all of them are one chapter)

Cursed
A spirit destroys the life of two Backstreet Boys (Nick/Kevin0
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=11010

Tough Lover

He Had It Coming
It wasn't his fault, really, the man deserved it... (Nick/Howie)
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10366

I'm kinda amused I had enough horror oneshots just for that without dipping into my 1000 Ways To Kill Nick Carter stuff. LOL.

5. Just Another Day:
http://www.absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8180

Give us a quick summary:
A girl meets a member of a band by chance, not knowing everything that would follow.

Who is the main character?
Nick

What genre is it?
Romance (YES you heard right), Alternate Universe

How many chapters?
24

Is it complete?
Yes

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
About 2000 words, so long

What do you like best about your story?
I don't know. I think the fact I challenged myself to write VERY far out of my comfort zone and I finished. No matter how the product turned out, I stuck with it.

Would you consider it popular?
I did at the time, but looking back, it was another romance in a heap of them.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
Partly because it's been so long since I wrote this (2006/2007) I like to think I've grown a lot. It's got a lot of flaws, and I know that. I would never claim it's my best story. I do however feel like I learned a lot in writing it. It'd be neat to see what someone thinks of it now.

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
It's my first attempt at romance in any sense LOL.

Story you are submitting (including a link):
*1.) Falling In Love Again
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10872&warning=4

Give us a quick summary:
Annie is a single mom who, after a chance meeting with Brian Littrell, steps out of her comfort zone and decides to pursue her dream.  Then, she meets Nick.
Who is the main character?
Female lead named Annie.  Also very Nick and Brian centered.
What genre is it?
Romance
How many chapters?
56
Is it complete?
Yes
Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
Most are short
What do you like best about your story?
I'm proud of the overall storytelling in this one, and even prouder that I managed to finish it. lol
Would you consider it popular?
This was relatively popular, but about half the reviews happened during last summer's reading challenge, so not overtly so, actually.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
This is my most read and reviewed story, and in my opinion, the most well-written.  I think it's not been "given a chance" by a lot of readers because of the genre.
Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
Nothing I can think of.

Story you are submitting (including a link):
2.) Run
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=11128
Give us a quick summary:
In a sequel to Falling in Love Again, the road to "happily ever after" isn't going to be easy for Nick and Annie after tragedy strikes in the wake of triumph at the hands of someone from the past.
Who is the main character?
I'll say Nick in this one, though also pretty centered on Annie.  The other guys have a much bigger presence in this one, also.
What genre is it?
Suspense
How many chapters?
22 so far.  Shooting for 30-40
Is it complete?
No, but it's on my summer to-do list.
Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
Most are short
What do you like best about your story?
This is definitely a step out of my comfort zone, and I'm actually enjoying it.
Would you consider it popular?
Not particularly, though it's gotten more attention at the beginning of writing before my other works-- I guess because I'm a little more known as a writer, now.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
This one is a genre switch for me, and something I can see a lot of the challenge participants being more drawn to than FILA.
Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
I really do plan to finish it this summer.

Story you are submitting (including a link):
*3.) Forever
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10800
Give us a quick summary:
This is a re-working of a collection of the first fanfictions I ever wrote as a teenager.  It takes place in the late-90's BSB era, and there's a girl band (yes, it's one of those stories...lol).  This focuses on the relationships (not all romantic) between the girl band and the boy band as they tour together and live life afterward.
Who is the main character?
Girl-band member, Emily (obviously, she's based on me) is the narrator, and BSB-wise, there's a focus on Howie and Kevin, but it's an ensemble story for sure.
What genre is it?
Romance, but not only romance. Drama, humor also come to mind
How many chapters?
47 so far
Is it complete?
No
Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more)
Most are short
What do you like best about your story?
I like the narrator's voice in this story-- probably because it's much of my own.
Would you consider it popular?
No.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?
I think this one could be a fun read for nostalgia's sake.
Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc)
In my opinion, it's so much more than the run-of-the-mill girl band meets boy band story that was popular back in the day.  If nothing else, it's a re-write, and the writing and storytelling isn't bad.  I may not finish this one any time soon, even though the whole story is written in my head.  It's a saga, really, and probably should have been a series.  Regardless, I think it could be a fun read for someone.

Yay, Emily! We have 7 people so far. I would love for there to be at least 10. Please mention this challenge to people when you leave them reviews. I am trusting you guys that the stories you read would be good for this challenge.

And Steph, don't forget to list the stories you want to use since the next part of this process is picking the stories you'll be reading.

Thanks, everyone!

Summer Reading Challenge participation form

Pen name: Julilly

Story you are submitting: Stockholm Syndrome (http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10078&warning=4)
Give us a quick summary: Four friends and con artists come up with the ultimate plan to get some fast cash: Kidnapping a music executive's daughter. They think it will be easy, but they don't know what's in store.
Who is the main character?: Mostly Nick centered but all the guys are in it (except Kevin really but...it's me)
What genre is it?: Alternate Universe / Action
How many chapters?: 15
Is it complete?: You bet
Are your chapters long or short?: Middle of the road, some longer, some shorter
What do you like best about your story?: I wrote this story originally about 10 years ago and wasn't happy with it, so I remastered it in 2010 and liked it enough to post!
Would you consider it popular?: Negative
Why are you choosing this one for people to read?: There seems to be a few people who don't really dig AU because the boys aren't "themselves", so I'd be interested in seeing how someone feels I portrayed them either correctly or incorrectly, or even if those out of character moments seemed legit
Anything else we should know about it?: My usual fare so there's a bit of violence and drug use but nothing too offensive

Story you are submitting: As You Are  (http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10086)
Give us a quick summary: A girl held back from her dreams by the restrictions of society finds the perfect person to help her get what she wants whether he wants to, or not.
Who is the main character?: It's a Nick fic, but I will shamefully admit here that the main character is an original character.
What genre is it?: Alternate Universe / Historical Romance
How many chapters?: 15
Is it complete? Yes
Are your chapters long or short? Long
What do you like best about your story? This is honestly one of my favourite stories I've written. I feel like it was the first thing I wrote that I just felt passionate about and when I read it over again I thought "I couldn't have written that." Problem is, it should have been an original story.
Would you consider it popular? Absolutely not
Why are you choosing this one for people to read? Over the years I've become disappointed in the fact that I made this a fanfic and didn't write it as an original story. I'd like to hear what people think of it just from the perspective of someone expecting to read an old-timey BSB story.
Anything else we should know about it? Nick's sorta pretentious in this story, don't say I didn't warn you LOL

Story you are submitting: 30 Days (http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=11011)
Give us a quick summary: Moving in with a girlfriend always seemed like a good idea to Nick Carter. He liked the companionship - waking up with someone, eating dinner with someone and always having a date to the movies. What he never remembered was the awkward first month of honeymoon level romance mixed with annoyance and a twinge of seething hatred. He only hoped they would make it.
Who is the main character? See above. Or just assume. LOL
What genre is it? ROMANCE!
How many chapters? 31
Is it complete? Yes
Are your chapters long or short? On the longer side
What do you like best about your story? I don't like writing stories where Nick is a Backstreet Boy, I don't know why, so this was a departure for me. Granted, he doesn't do any BSB things during it but still...
Would you consider it popular? I can say with certainty that this is my second most popular story. I assume that is because it's not AU and is a Nick romance.
Why are you choosing this one for people to read? I find this story a bit disjointed at times. Curious to get some feedback that looks beyond the happy (sometimes) romance bit and really looks at the writing.
Anything else we should know about it? It's definitely crass and inappropriate at times, sort of like me.

Hello everyone,

Mare mentioned this challenge to me in a review, so I've decided to give it a shot. I'm only putting up one of my stories for now as the one that I'm currently working on isn't finished.

Pen name: KeepThisSecret

Story you are submitting (including a link): A Dash of Cinnamon http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=11202&warning=4

Give us a quick summary: In the fall of 2013, Brian and Nick find themselves in a similar position. For the first time in years, they are both desperately trying to redefine themselves as single men. The situation intensifies for Brian when he finds himself embroiled in a bitter custody battle involving Child Protective Services. During an on-the-road visit, the unsettling background of one C.P.S. worker results in a disappointing revelation for Nick and ultimately forces Brian to make a potentially life-changing decision.

Who is the main character? Brian and Nick are the main characters, but the rest of the guys are in it quite a bit as well. There is also a female lead (obviously ... it's a romance).

What genre is it? Romance

How many chapters? 40

Is it complete? Yes

Are your chapters long or short? (long - 2,000 words or more) The majority of them are on the longer side.

What do you like best about your story? I think that I did a pretty good job with the description and the characterizati on. I especially liked Baylee's character, because I changed him up a little bit.

Would you consider it popular? I'm too new to the site to be able to really determine what makes a story "popular". It did get some pretty good reviews, though.

Why are you choosing this one for people to read? I think that a lot of people probably skipped over this story because it's a romance. Although the plot may be a bit tired, I think that the writing is fairly good and that people may like the story if they give it a chance. Also, I'm a new writer and I'm looking to attract some readers.  :)

Anything else we should know about it? (overly violent, sexual, slash, etc) There are a few sex scenes, but nothing too intense.

Hey Shania, Nice to see you wanting to participate! :)

Here are the rules from the first page of this thread, just in case you missed them!

Just wanted to make sure you saw that. You have until the 14th to post the rest of your submissions unless you just want to do the challenge as a reader?
Title: Re: Part one of the 2014 summer reading challenge! The participants!

I only have two oneshots though...  :(
Title: Re: Part one of the 2014 summer reading challenge! The participants!
Post by: mare on May 12, 2014, 03:53:59 PM
If you do want to participate, you should definitely submit them both. It's just like as I said in the rules, it's not really leaving much for a person to read so there is a good chance your stories might not be picked and if that happens, just be aware that you are still obligated to read two stories from the listed ones.

Make sure you read the complete set of rules in the first post before saying yes to this challenge.

As long as you are fine with that, then I have no problem with you only submitting your two one shots as one story. :) If you decide not to do it, just make sure you let me know before the 14th.

As we get closer to picking what we'd like to read, it's time to fill out your first survey! (plus just checking to make sure you're all paying attention to this thread. lol)

Here is this year's reader's survey:

Reader's Survey

1) What is the most recent story you have read or are currently reading?

2) What drew you to that (those) stories?

3) Do you typically read stories by the same select people or does it matter who wrote it?

4) What makes you click on a story? (summary? Banner? etc...)

5) When you start reading a story do you typically follow through and read the entire thing?

6) What would make you stop reading a story?

7) If a story is complete do you binge read it to the end or spread it out?

8) Would you consider yourself a picky reader?

9) Which boy do you enjoy reading about the most?

10) What are your favorite genres to read?

11) Do you typically give feedback when you read?

12) What will be the hardest part of this challenge for you?

13) Do you already know which stories you'd like to pick?

14) Why did you decide to participate in the challenge?

15) Are you currently working on a story? If yes, what is it and have you submitted it as part of the challenge?

Mare, I'll bite and go first!

Reader's Survey

1) What is the most recent story you have read or are currently reading? - I was reading "Sick as My Secrets" by RockofAges75 and I was LOVING it. The fact that it hasn't been updated in a while is slowly killing me. LOL

2) What drew you to that (those) stories? - I have to admit that I was a bit unsure of the story at first because of the slash undertones, but I guess that's also what prompted me to read it. I liked that it was a little bit different and definitely out of my comfort zone as a reader. Plus, the writing is really good!

3) Do you typically read stories by the same select people or does it matter who wrote it? - It doesn't matter to me who the author is as long as I enjoy their writing.

4) What makes you click on a story? (summary? Banner? etc...) - Mostly the summary ... I could care less about the banner. Although, some of the banners out there are pretty good!

5) When you start reading a story do you typically follow through and read the entire thing? - If I'm loving the writing and the plot then of course I will finish it!

6) What would make you stop reading a story? - Poor grammar!! If I click on a story and I find myself getting confused because of incorrect word usage and/or run-on sentences, I will stop reading right away. I know that sounds horrible, but if I can't just sit back and read effortlessly than it's not enjoyable for me, regardless of how good the plot is.

7) If a story is complete do you binge read it to the end or spread it out? - Binge read!!

8) Would you consider yourself a picky reader? - Not really

9) Which boy do you enjoy reading about the most? - Brian and AJ. I will read Nick stories as long as they're not "traditional" Nick stories.  :)

10) What are your favorite genres to read? - I like drama, suspense, and romance. If there's some good "bromance" than I'm pretty much hooked.  ;D

11) Do you typically give feedback when you read? - I try to ...

12) What will be the hardest part of this challenge for you? - Finding the time to leave constructive feedback on every chapter. Sometimes, I get hooked on a story and don't leave a comment simply because I've read the chapter on the go and don't feel like I have time to articulate myself properly.

13) Do you already know which stories you'd like to pick? - I'm leaning towards "Shadow Woods" by Mare, "Walked Out of My Dreams" by Rose, or"First Impressions" by Kyrie. However, I'm really open to reading anything.  :)

14) Why did you decide to participate in the challenge? - I'm a new writer and I'm new to the site, so I thought that it might be a good way to gain some exposure and to meet everyone else.

15) Are you currently working on a story? If yes, what is it and have you submitted it as part of the challenge? - Yes, I currently have a story on the most recent page. I did not submit it for the challenge simply because it's not finished. I suppose that I could submit the story. It seems to be getting some good hits on the most recent page.
Title: Re: Part one of the 2014 summer reading challenge! The participants!
Post by: mare on May 13, 2014, 01:59:01 PM
1) What is the most recent story you have read or are currently reading?
I am currently reading Dodging the Daylight and just finished Brothers.

2) What drew you to that (those) stories? Brothers was easy because well...duh! It practically was screaming my name "Hey Mare!! I wrote this for you, what are you waiting for?" lol Dodging the Daylight, I almost skipped because it started out with a dead Nick. I'm not a fan of those, but this is an example of what great writing can do, so I stuck with it. I'm glad I did.

3) Do you typically read stories by the same select people or does it matter who wrote it?
Not really, but sometimes it seems that way. I don't usually plan it though.

4) What makes you click on a story? (summary? Banner? etc...)
The summary most times, never the banner ever!

5) When you start reading a story do you typically follow through and read the entire thing?
When I commit to a story, I usually see it through to the end unless the writer gives up on it before I do which sadly, is usually the case. :(

6) What would make you stop reading a story?
I will generally give a story a chance for two chapters or so but if the grammar, or characterizati ons are very poor, I'll stop there. For stories I have committed to, the only thing that will make me stop is if the author takes way way too long to update. In those cases, I will wait until the story is complete before continuing. The other thing that will make me stop is if the author never responds to reviews.

7) If a story is complete do you binge read it to the end or spread it out?
I spread it out. Usually a chapter or two a day. I've never been a binge reader.

8) Would you consider yourself a picky reader?
Extremely!

9) Which boy do you enjoy reading about the most?
Nick centered/group fics keep my attention the most. If it's just a boy and a random girl, not the least bit interested.

10) What are your favorite genres to read?
Suspense, Action, Drama, Dramedy

11) Do you typically give feedback when you read?
Once I commit to a story, yes. Before that, no.

12) What will be the hardest part of this challenge for you?
I am a very picky reader so the actual reading of the story tends to be the hardest part of the challenges for me. i have a zero attention span so unless the story really captures my attention, I'll struggle through.

13) Do you already know which stories you'd like to pick?
Nope, as part of my challenge, I always wait until everyone else has piked and then I'll pick from what's left. As long as it's not just my stuff. That would suck! LOL

14) Why did you decide to participate in the challenge?

Because I invented it! LOL Even f I didn't though, I'd most likely get involved because I like to be introduced to new stories and writers.

15) Are you currently working on a story? If yes, what is it and have you submitted it as part of the challenge?
Yup! it's called "The Secrets That We Keep" and I'll probably start posting it soon. Because it hasn't even started to post yet, it's not part of the challenge (this year anyway)

Reader's Survey

15) Are you currently working on a story? If yes, what is it and have you submitted it as part of the challenge? - Yes, I currently have a story on the most recent page. I did not submit it for the challenge simply because it's not finished. I suppose that I could submit the story. It seems to be getting some good hits on the most recent page.

You should completely submit this story for the challenge! It doesn't have to be complete and you have more than enough to keep readers interested! Just sayin' lol

1) What is the most recent story you have read or are currently reading?
Dodging The Daylight, Sick As My Secrets, and The Dangers of Fluttering though I'm ashamed to say I fell behind on them LOL. The challenge will keep me focused despite work.

2) What drew you to that (those) stories?

Interesting plotlines and for two, promises of serious angst LOL.

3) Do you typically read stories by the same select people or does it matter who wrote it?
I'm more likely to click on a fic if it's by an author who I KNOW will write a good story, but a neat idea will suck me in.

4) What makes you click on a story? (summary? Banner? etc...)
Summary, the banner might make me look twice but never click.

5) When you start reading a story do you typically follow through and read the entire thing?
I try to. Sometimes I fail.

6) What would make you stop reading a story?
Bad writing or bad characterizati on

7) If a story is complete do you binge read it to the end or spread it out?
If it's finished I totally binge read LOL.

Sticking to it.

13) Do you already know which stories you'd like to pick?
Not a clue

14) Why did you decide to participate in the challenge?
To give me a kick in the pants. I miss my fanfic world but my attention span lately is horrible.

15) Are you currently working on a story? If yes, what is it and have you submitted it as part of the challenge?
Yes, "We Burn The Sky", and no because it's not long enough yet.

Reader's Survey

1) What is the most recent story you have read or are currently reading? Sick as My Secrets and Dodging the Daylight.  There were a couple others I've been following, but they haven't been updated in a while

2) What drew you to that (those) stories? Sick as My Secrets- the writer.  I'm a fan of most of Julie's stuff.  Dodging the Daylight-- it kept popping up on the most recent page, and I was intrigued by the summary, so I clicked and I'm glad I did!

3) Do you typically read stories by the same select people or does it matter who wrote it? There are a few writers that I'll almost always click on, but I've definitely discovered some new writers I'm really enjoying.  So, in general, no it doesn't really matter.  I'll give everyone a shot.

4) What makes you click on a story? (summary? Banner? etc...)  A combo of summary/banner.  Professional looking banners do tend to make me click, but the summary's got to be intriguing, too.  I'll also click if it's an author I'm a fan of.

5) When you start reading a story do you typically follow through and read the entire thing? Depends-- there have been a couple recently that I've fallen behind on because the story's not exactly going in a direction I'm interested in.

6) What would make you stop reading a story?  Bad grammar, poor organization, shallow characters, or like I said above, the story just stops going in a direction that keeps me interested.

7) If a story is complete do you binge read it to the end or spread it out?  I'm typically a binge reader, but lately, life's gotten in the way of that, so I imagine myself more pacing myself when it comes to the challenge this year.

8) Would you consider yourself a picky reader?  A little, yes.

9) Which boy do you enjoy reading about the most?  Nick, Kevin

10) What are your favorite genres to read?  I'm going to make up on my own genre and call it "Romantic Dramedy"  I like to see a little romance, a little drama/suspense, and a little comedy.  That's the type of story I'm drawn to most often

11) Do you typically give feedback when you read?   I need to get better at that.  I do-- but it tends to be sporadic throughout the story, and definitely not every chapter.

12) What will be the hardest part of this challenge for you?  Leaving good, constructive feedback for every chapter.  I also worry about keeping up with it this year.  Life's a little more hectic and stressful than last year.

13) Do you already know which stories you'd like to pick?   I picked them before coming to fill this out

14) Why did you decide to participate in the challenge?  I really enjoyed doing it last year (my first year), and I got to know some awesome ladies and writers.  Excited for more of the same.

15) Are you currently working on a story? If yes, what is it and have you submitted it as part of the challenge? Yes- Run is my current project, and I did submit it.  There are a couple others on the backburner right now, but I'm hoping to force myself to finish them before posting anything new.
