Title: Those were the days!
Post by: mare on June 25, 2014, 07:46:23 PM
Just thought I'd start a thread here since it came up in the top tens thread.

We were talking about the old days, back before AC  became a thing and we had to be hosted on sites and join yahoo groups to get any kind of feedback or interaction from other writers.

Who were some of your favorites to read when you first started out and when did you start writing and reading fanfic?

*gets comfy in her rocking chair, grabs some knitting needles*

I....remember back when fanfiction.net accepted Real Person Fanfic! That's where I got my start in writing fanfic LOL. I wrote stories but never shared them or felt confident enough to try writing about the Boys even though I'd read a few stories by then. And then I remember when after 9/11 they banned RP ff for "copyright issues" which never made any sense to me. You'd think material based on books, tv shows, etc. would cause that issue.

But it's what made me discover AC since I was writing my very first collab at the time and I needed a place to post it (though I was being hosted on a friend's site too).

I think I began to read fan fiction around 1999  :o and it was totally by accident!  I was doing some research for  a class and came across a  BSB slash story.  I couldn't believe people were writing these stories; yet, I couldn't stop reading them.    And I read pretty much anything that was out there and followed a bunch of links!  I think some of those earlier stories I read turned me off to romance fiction pretty quickly!  But as time went on, I guess you could say I became more discriminating about what I read.   There was the Angelfire site where I read "Swollen Issues" and I think there was a link there for "Ground Zero."  Jennifer Stevens, Cecelia Flowers, Izzy, Whitney, Eboni, and Refuse To Lose were sites that were quickly bookmarked.   I also read stories on fanfiction.net .  And I,  didn't understand the reason for removing RP fan fiction either.  I also joined a few yahoogroups. You wouldn't believe how much paper I used when I would print a story or installment at work, so that I can read it quicker at home.  I even started putting them in binders.  I'm glad I printed some of them....I wished I had printed a few more since many of these sites are gone.

The most disturbing thing I read by mistake was a fic about Nick and Angel incest.

It's amazing it didn't scare me off fanfic LMAO.

I had so many binders back in the day. Half were my own notes for my fanfics and half were stories had printed it. The binders with my stuff also had my floppys so I could write at school when I used the computers LOL. Oddly enough yahoo groups I stayed away from till I discovered Julie's site, then I joined so I'd know about updates.

Remember the fire and lightning layouts back on AC when it first started?

Wow Rose, so you have been around longer than me. You are an oldie! lol

The first thing I ever wrote on was a red robin story on ffnet. I added a chapter to it and I might have begun to post Mizpah when they stopped taking RP stories.

The very first fanfic I ever 'read' was a visual that was attached to one of those BSB fansites. I had NO idea what I was about to get myself into with that one and had never even heard of fanfiction up until that point.

ffnet was linked to that site (I think it was called BSB blvd or something like that?) so I went there and was hooked.

At that time I found "Ground Zero" and "Swollen Issues," but not complete. Shortly after, I found the Angelfire site Pammy was talking about and was just like "OMG these stories are the best!!!"

Then I stumbled on "Can You Keep a Secret" by Kat and Amy and "Seven Days" by Refuse.  And then of course Eboni's "Boys in the Basement",  and Cecilia and Izzy's "Come Together" as well.

I think that's why my standards are so high, these are the first stories I ever read! Everything else I tried seemed to pale in comparison. I knew even back then that romance wasn't for me so I tended to shy away from those although I did try a few at the beginning and quickly realized I was smart to skip them (for me anyway)

Uh and of course we remember the fire and ice layouts? Some of us still use them  ??? what? I still use all the old school layouts including the one for the forum. I am not a big fan of change. Don't judge me! lol

Do you guys remember which sites you used to post your stories on after ffnet closed down? Where you were hosted?

That's how I met Julie :) She started hosting me on her site. I was also hosted on Izzy's site and I think that girl Bria you were talking about Rose. LOL although I'm not sure. My stories were randomly popping up on other's peoples sites as well that I had no idea about.

One day I got a random email from Chaos (to which I fangirled lol) asking me if he could host Mizpah on his site Absolute Chaos and of course I said yes. The rest is history, I guess. LOL

Like you Rose I started on FF. Net when they allowed RP Fanfic. I was so mad because when they took it all down I lost everything and had to start over. I didn't start posting again until 2009 ish on AC. Come to think of it I'm not sure how I found AC but I know I used to read Swollen Issues on my phone and some other stories before I began posting my own stuff. I remember I was so happy when I got my first review too, I still loveseeing the emails in my inbox for feedback. Mare, Chaos and Rose were some of the ffirst stories I read on here too.

An oldie who started at 13 and is VERY grateful her old stories no longer exist on the internet lmao. They were so bad. My standards started off decently high. Especially since like you, I couldn't get into the romance stories. So I scoured the internet for the sci-fi, action fics, etc. I discovered Whitney because of Where Do We Go From Here? and The Legend, Bria had this sci-fi story, and Eboni I loved her stories about Everybody, LTL, and The Call, plus The Answer Is Yes, and Boys In The Basement. Refuse and Chaos were also others between Ground Zero and Seven Days. I was addicted.

Oh! And those Survivor fics where it was BSB vs NSYNC? I forget who wrote it but that was one of my faves.

I was friends with bluecloud Steph back in the day when I sent her feedback for Sammy, and Time's Enemy. We chatted and had just started writing together when ffnet closed down. She offered to host all my stories at her site and we posted our collaboration there as well. When I discovered AC (from my cowriter at the time, Jamelet who said most ffnet writers were going there), I started posting it there too. Along with a sci-fi I was writing with Jamelet and Anastacia back in the day LOL.

I met Julie actually not from feedback though I did give it lol, but through the offer to join in Code Blue. She needed people to help her write it and I figured...why not? Cause my collab whore days were in full swing and I thought it'd help me improve. Julie and I clicked and then that grew when this forum was born :). Like you with Chaos, I fangirled mentally when I first started chatting/writing with her. Because by that point I'd read Broken, loved it, and was just like ommmmg haha.

So I'm an oldie but an oldie lost within the shuffle mainly because I was so freaking young and inexperienced writing wise LOL.

When I decided to start Phantasm and get all of my favorite writers in on it, is when I really got to know a lot of people like Mersey. I hadn't talked to her much before that, just an occasional feedback email here or there. When I look at the people who contributed to that story I'm still in awe how I got them all to participate. Especially because at the time I was more of an avid reader and less known as a writer. lol

But we all spent a lot of time exchanging emails and talking through IM because of that story. Even though in the end, it isn't something I am overly proud of, it holds a special place in my heart for getting to really know so many fanfic writers. Good and bad. I sent out a lot of emails to people and it also gave me a sense of which authors were complete and utter snobs who thought they were a little too above contributing. LOL those I shall not mention.

I do toy with the idea of doing another one of those but then remember how incredibly anal I am and how time consuming it was to organize it lol

Ugh, I guess that means that technically we could have voted for Eboni in the tens because she is on that story! Although we still wouldn't have one of her stories to discuss. lol Bummer!

I didn't discover fanfic until 2006, and I think I found this place in 2008.  So I can't join in about old sites or stories.  Wow what was I doing with my time before 2006? lol

Oh the memories!   I remember Bria's site!  There was this story there where Kevin ended up with custody of Nick and maybe Aaron after the rest of the Carters were killed in a tornado, I think.  I remember crying my eyes out because Kevin dies....and now I can't remember the title.   >:(  And how could I forget Julie's site.  I think I read my first, non-slash, fanfiction story there.  Again, can't remember the title, but Nick follows Brian after he sneaks out one night and ends up kidnapped and beaten.   Wow, I was really into depressing myself!

OMG! I had to comment on this thread .... mostly because it's making me feel really old. LOL

I discovered fan fic in the early 2000s when I was just starting high school. I'm pretty sure that the first story I read was a Christmas story involving Brian which may or may not have been written by someone named Hannah. (I can't remember the plot to save my life at the moment).

I have seen the name Whitney being brought up by a lot of you and  I can definitely remember reading some of her stuff. I'm pretty sure she wrote my favourite bus crash story (Again, I can't think of the name).  ??? I know for sure that I read (and loved) "Boys in The Basement" by Eboni!

I never posted any of my own stories back in the early days. I pretty much just kept them to myself or shared them with my friends. The whole idea of approaching the creator of a site and asking to be hosted absolutely terrified me! LOL  :-X I don't think that I ever sent any feedback either. I just kind of read and enjoyed everything in secrecy. Now, I realize that I should have sent those authors some positive comments. I'm sure that they would have liked to know that more people were out there reading and enjoying what they were writing.

I didn't actually get back into fan fic until recently though. I don't think I read any during the latter half of high school or throughout university.

Pammy, I know both the stories you are talking about. Izzy had a story very similar to the plot you mentioned with Nick following Brian, but I think Julie also had a story like that as well. I remember the one with Kevin adopting Aaron and Nick but I know I never finished it because I heard that Kevin dies and I hate when the guys die in fics. lol

I think that girl Bria also wrote a story where Nick was impaled by a pole? LMAO is that correct?

KeepThisSecret (We need your name because I hate referring to you as that lol) Where Do We Go From Here is that Whitney story and it's a classic! Still the best bus crash/singing Nick out of a coma story that exists! LOL

I remember how intimidated I was by having to ask people to be hosted! Especially when I was turned down by a few of them. The BSB attorneys didn't want someone they had never heard of on their site, for one. Luckily Izzy and Julie gave me a chance. Of course I had no idea that Julie was only in like middle school at the time lol
Title: Re: Those were the days!
Post by: balance on June 26, 2014, 06:10:47 PM
Wow.....BSB Attorneys really missed the boat with you, Mare.   But, I fell in love with "Port in a Storm."  That's as close as I will come to reading a romance!  I don't think I read many courtroom  dramas in the BSB fandom.

I even read "Brian's Winter" as a fan fiction story and then went back to read the novel. ::)

Another favorite site was Walking in the Clouds.

LOL Brian's Winter? Never heard of that one.

Was that Bobbi? Walking in the Clouds? There was also a Bronwyn too. I want to say that was hers as well?

I just remember at that time everyone had Angelfire sites and the pop up ads on those things were horrendous. lol

I remember Bauhaus. I think it still might be. There was another one as well but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. It was like a parallel universe version of AC. I used to post on there too! As well as Mersey and Reb...AH it's going to drive me crazy now. I think it started with a C?

Nick goes mysteriously missing a lot that guy. He needs a leash! LOL

There was one I was reading on ffnet involving Nick being kidnapped and put in a cage and I think AJ was there too? I was never able to find it ever again to the point that I think maybe I made it up in me head or something.

I dont remember what it was about..been too long lol. I dont thinkbi had an accountt on ff.net but i remember reading my confession.net i think its kinda cloudy tbh.

I remember bsb blvd and read some stuff there i had my own website for awhile walk on water fan fiction was the name...all my stories were posted there until i discoverdd ac and closed my site down....and also my ex hated me writing these kinds of stories anyway.

Long story short i took a break for awhile got together with Art had to re learn everything again and just now starting to finally read some good fics again.

It's funny that even when people were kids, they still liked to torture the poor kid. LOL

There more suspense/action stories back then than there are now too which is why I think I got into reading, personally.

I'm pretty sure I have always gone by Mare. I don't ever really remember people's SN's unless they use their real names.

I think I remember your site as well. Walk on Water sounds familiar. I wonder how we all managed to find all these sites back in the day? I know My Confession is still around and doing well. Besides Karah's, Julie's Dreamer's Sanctuary is the only other one I can think of that are still thriving and independent sites for BSB fanfic. I'm sure I'm wrong. There has to be more, but those are the only two I can think of.

I had Brain Candy for quite a while but once I became a mod at AC I decided to shut it down. It made no sense to have them both going at the same time when everyone was reading my stuff over here anyway. I sometimes do miss it though.

It's amazing I haven't posted in this thread yet!  I've been working on a huge case study for one of my summer classes this week, so I've tried not to let myself get sucked into anything too distracting online.

But now that that's turned in... bring on the nostalgia!

I've been reading fanfic since the summer of 1999...  I don't know exactly when in summer I found my first one, but my fifteenth fanfic anniversary should be anytime now!  I spent much of that summer completely OBSESSED with reading fanfic, which led to many frustrating fights with my mother over my wanting to tie up the phone line for hours at a time while I was on dial-up or waste printer paper and ink printing stories out.  I ended up copy/pasting stories chapter by chapter and saving them to good old-fashioned floppy disks to read on my computer in my room, which did not have internet.

I started writing sometime in late 99 or early 2000, but I didn't get my first finished story hosted online until February 2000.  After being hosted for a couple of months and writing a few more stories, I started my own site in April of that year.  Still have it, too!  I also posted on fanfic.net for a brief time before they got read of RP fanfic.  I associate ff.net more with Harry Potter fanfic, though; I don't remember reading a lot of BSB fics on it.

My two favorite authors back in the day (pre-2003) were Whitney (Where Can We Go From Here, Nowhere to Run) and Jenna (Trapped, Swollen Issues, Nick and Lizz).  Whitney stopped writing a long time ago, but Jenna is still one of my favorites.  There actually weren't many other authors I remember reading multiple stories by, unless they were my friends; I read a lot of stories by a lot of different people.  That was back in the days of sites that hosted a lot of stories, so you could find a lot of different authors on the same site, much like AC today.

Before I started my site, I was hosted on at least a couple of sites, one called Escape from Reality and another called Starlight Catcher's Fanfic Page (something like that), which was run by my friend Heidi, who was actually the first person to give me feedback, ever, and thus became my first online friend and eventual collaborator.  I think I had (still have, maybe?) stories hosted on other sites later, but that was if they asked me, instead of me asking them.  Once I had my own site, I didn't worry about being hosted other places, although I did post stories on ff.net and later, AC.  I actually don't remember how I stumbled across AC - probably through Ground Zero - but I think I've been a member since like 2003.

Mare, I know I've told you this before, but I still have fond memories of reading Mizpah while I was supposed to be cleaning computers at my mom's school, which was my summer job in high school.

LOL Depressing stories were always my favorite too!  That story is still hosted on my archive site!  Living in a Nightmare: http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/hosted/nightmare.html

I have seen the name Whitney being brought up by a lot of you and  I can definitely remember reading some of her stuff. I'm pretty sure she wrote my favourite bus crash story (Again, I can't think of the name).  ???

If Bria had one about Nick being impaled on a pole, I missed that one!  The only Nick-being-impaled-on-a-pole story I know is Remember Me This Way (not Rose's, but the other one).  http://www.geocities.ws/imaginefanfic/RMTW.html  If I find out there is more than one, I will crack up!  Impalement FTW!

Aww! LOL  That was actually the summer before my senior year of high school, so I was not THAT young!  I thought your stories were great!  Mizpah was so creepy.

This is making me want to check out the old_archive account again LOL I wish I had been allowed to continue that before Geocities shut 'er down.

There are still ways to get some stories off of Geocities.  Archive.org, reocities.com, oocities.com, geocities.ws.. . all have archived versions of some Geocities sites, but whether they'll be there or not depends on how popular they were.

We should take a moment of silence for Geocities, btw.  That's where my first site was hosted... and actually, I stayed with Yahoo until just last summer.  RIP Geocities.  Gone, but not forgotten.

I'm so glad we got some of those classics posted. No Eboni though or Jennifer or Mersey.

I am still so annoyed that she never posted Finding Brotherhood on this site. I kept telling her to post it but she never did. lol I loved that story!

Finding Brotherhood is still online, if you want to add it to the AC Archive or something.  http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/mersey/fb.html  Guess you should ask Mersey first, since she's still around.

I have one of Eboni's stories hosted on my site, too.  Don't Want to Lose You Now: http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/hosted/dwlyn.html

Oh man I had many incarnations of a site over the years!

Everyone needs to google their penname and BSB fanfic and see what comes up bc I just found myself listed on a LJ page about disability fics LOL I was trying to remember the name of one of the sites and finally found it on backstree.net.

"AlliHave Contains a lot of fanfiction by three different authors (Karen, Julilly and Hills) including the infamous Ataxia and What a Crazy World. Site also has media, pictures, skins, and so much more!"

That was me! I also had another one before that but I can't recall the name at all. IYH I think was the acronym lol

I remember Vaffel, vaguely.  I don't think I ever posted or read anything there, but I've heard of it.

I just tried googling my penname and BSB fanfic, like Julilly suggested, and while my site was the first to come up when I used "Julie," the first page that came up when I tried "rokofages75" was my old account on Quizilla!  Anyone remember Quizilla?  I thought Quizilla was long dead, but apparently TeenNick has revived it.  I made several fanfic-related quizzes on there.

I do have to say, all this talking about the old days and the old stories has made me want to go back and reread something. I have just been trying to figure out what I want to read again. All this talk about old stories and writers has made me nostalgic and has made me go on a scavenger hunt for some of the old stories.  It has also made me reflect on my "fan fiction life."  I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here's my question for all of you: What was it like for you, both as a reader and/or writer, to send/receive that first feedback?

As I've mentioned before, my first feedback was sent to Chaos for "Ground Zero."  I had the feeling that I wanted to say something, but I didn't know what to say.  I just didn't want to sound stupid!  So in an e-mail, I said I'm loving your story and thanks for sharing.  I know, totally fangirl, right! But I really didn't know what to say.  But, to my surprise, I got a reply from Chaos saying thanks, I would did I really like about the story.  If not for that reply, I think most of my feedback/reviews would be like that first one.  But I was given permission to discuss my thoughts with the creator of the story.....it was pretty heady for me!

So, what was your first time like?

Hey by doing that I just found that other AC type site I was talking about. It was called Vaffel! LOL

I was gonna say, were you talking about Vaffel? LOL!! That site had a lot of suspense stories! I remember yours and Mersey's stories most fondly! And I think someone with the penname Scooby too. I first started posting there, and somewhere else... I know AC had a link to it, because our stories were archived. I never saved the stories I posted there, and I kinda wish I did because those were the first few fics I had wrote.

I think I had wrote a story called "Larger Than Life", or maybe it was called something else, I can't remember, lmao. I know I had the lyrics in it "but let me tell you now there are prices to fame, alright... all of our time spent in flashes of light." I can't remember how it was supposed to go, but the guys were driving and ended up hitting some dude that jumped out in front of their car. They decided to take him into their vehicle and rush him off to the nearest hospital, and the guy ended turning on them, having it be apart of his plan. He was making the guys do certain things, which led to a high speed chase, all the while the guy framing them for a crime of hitting him with their car and kidnapping him, so they're on the run, yadda yadda yadda... I really don't know what the hell I was thinking when I was creating that story, lmao!!

I am a Kevin girl but a Nick fic girl, if that makes any sense? I love reading Kevin but really it's his relationship with Nick that I enjoy the most and it seems to be that way for all of them to Nick. It intrigues me for whatever reason. I really think the age difference is what does it. I think I have figured out if they were all the same age, I wouldn't care as much. Is that weird? Probably. LOL

LOL!!! That totally makes sense Mare!! Their bond is definitely intriguing to say the least, and the age difference definitely is a huge factor in it. Kevin the typical protective older brother, Howie the second in command peacemaker, Brian the goof ball who's just there, and AJ seems to be adapting more of a comforting role.

Case in point, the video of Nick messing up during "The One", and AJ making fun of him, but consoling him afterwards like it's okay; great homage to Nick being the baby of the group, lol. But, at the same time, seems like Nick has been calling shots, or taking control as of late; adapting more of a "I may be young, but the only one who can say shit or do shit to my bros if me; otherwise I'll deal with you." Lol.
Title: Re: Those were the days!
Post by: Rose on July 28, 2014, 10:18:42 PM
I find the bond even more interesting now that Nick's grown up a bit. You can tell the others still look out for him. Not to mention Kevin and Nick are a lot more a like. Nick can be a perfectionist at times with his work. Nick was the one who got all the writers/producers in for TIU. Nick likes to try his hand at everything (filmmaking, acting, etc). The same can be said for Kevin.

Definitely agree. That one video I seen, of him and Kevin arguing with each other about whatever, and the other three just standing uncomfortably around, with Howie and Brian trying to pass it off with humor, lol. As much as it was uncomfortable to watch, that's a great example of how their bond isn't always perfect; they will have their quarrels and disagreements, but the love and respect they have for each other is profound and is worth more than anything. Shit, I wish I had their bond with my siblings/best friends, lmao!

I'mma go to my friends and be like "Guys/ladies, lets pretend we're in a band and bond and shit!" Lmao!
Title: Re: Those were the days!
Post by: Rose on July 28, 2014, 10:30:19 PM
Probably! Which is what keeps it interesting. It's like with Brian and how the bond with Nick weakened is something I like to play around with. Or Howie stepping up his relationship with Nick between Kevin leaving and Brian being distant. Then there's the whole AJ/Brian deal plus AJ having the same sort of problems Nick did.

This is probably why I find "Nick centered" group fics more interesting to write.

Brian and Nick got closer during Unbreakable/TIU and even now with IAWLT but I don't think it's ever gonna be back to "Frick and Frack" the way we know it. That's really what I meant. But then again they've been dressing the same lately so maybe it will now that Nick's married LOL.

There's so much I could say but I'll keep most to myself about Nick and Brian's relationship.. .but I can see that they are closer now than they have been in a while. But the bond between Nick and Howie for the last few years, even stemming back to UB when they all broke off into pairs to do the radio interviews, I think is where it started.  Honestly..they are my new Frick and Frack..lol I'm so Team Nowie!  I LOVE when those two are together!  And I think a lot goes to say that Howie was the ONLY BSBer to actually be IN Nick's wedding.  Nick talked about it somewhere (I can't remember where now) about how he was talking to him about Lauren..how he was afraid of loosing her and was thinking about asking her to marry him and Howie was all supportive of him.  Howie also did the Foreward in Nick's book and also sent a video message to him when he launched it on Dr. Phil.

I think Nick said he wanted one of them to represent the brotherly bond but couldn't have them all as his groomsmen or something. Aaron was supposed to be one and tried to fly out the day of the wedding and didn't make it. Ava was the flower girl.

I still think something was wonky about Aaron not being able to make it. Especially when Nick made the comment "everyone that WANTED to be there was there". That spoke VOLUMES to me.

Don't worry Doc..you can catch up when you watch the show..lol Nacho was even in it..he wore a little camera on his head to give you the ceremony from his perspective..l ol  I just KNEW that dog was gonna be part of it..lol Too cute!

Well hot diggity damn! Lol. I think I may watch "I Heart Nick Carter" when it comes out; show looks adorbs! Lol.

Sorry to butt in but it's great to see everyone in here :)

LOL!!! Well, yanno... kinda feeling like Kevin right now, left and came back, hahahaha! Speaking of, I'm currently watching vids of soundchecks and whatnot, getting reintroduced to their current bond or whatever, lol. I'm laughing way too much at most of these vids, lol. Its great seeing Kevin back. :)

HIIII!!! I should be in bed but I got intrigued by Doc and Rose talking about this..lol

Phil.

I agree. I think Nick and Howie are extremely tight! It's funny in one of these threads somewhere I asked about how people perceive all their relationships to one another because it seemed to me all the die hard Brian fans still see Nick and Brian as closest but even in their hey day as Frick and Frack I always felt like the relationship was a bit one sided. Not to say Brian didn't and still does love Nick, but Nick adores Brian. That's always been apparent.

Seems like you hit the nail on the head with describing Brian and Nick's relationship. It's interesting how the dynamic has shifted a bit, because it gives writers new bonds to write or describe. It'll be interesting to read Nick and Howie's brolationship, AJ and Brian's brolationship, and Kevin assuming the father position again, lol.

I just have to say, I couldn't stop watching this video over and over, lmao. Totally loved how they were all picking on AJ, and AJ was all like "Alright guys, lets do this shit before I change my mind!" lmao.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l-aXOgXRM8

Speaking of which, I was also watching the video of them impersonating each other, another one I couldn't help than to watch over and over and laugh my ass off at, lol. With Kevin impersonating AJ and saying how he always has a sideways glance when he performs, and AJ saying he always did that, he wasn't sure why and Howie just quipped in with "Because he wants our attention." I hadn't noticed it until they mentioned that, and I thought that was so cute because we know AJ seeks attention, but his gesture also seems like it's more than just attention seeking, but rather seeking approval as well from his fellow bandmates; like "hey guys, I'm doing this right?" or "I don't want to miss a cue", or "am I sounding off?". Idk, maybe that's just what I got out of seeing it, lol.

Yeah, it's cute to think that way. LOL

I still love the fact that Nick always tries to poison the guy. lmao and everyone including AJ seem fine with it.

LMAO!! Idk, its what his look kinda looked like to me, hahahaha.

So, aside from Rose and Jen, we were talking over at TDS about the "old school fanfic" methods and what they entailed of. What was your guys' favorite "old school fanfic" method/plot to read? Do you guys think there were more of those kind of plots back then versus now; if so, why do you think that is? I was wondering if this should go in the "questions to ponder" thread, but I feel its relevant to this "those were the days" theme, lol.

In one of those videos from a sound check they talked about playing pranks on each other and apparently Nick put Niacin in AJ's coffee and also Visine in AJ's water. The best part was just AJ's reaction like "Oh doodee doodee doodee...he got me again..." LOL Then he said His wife knew about it but wanted to see how it all played out!

When I think old school, I generally also equate that with fics that portray them when they were younger but that's not always the case. Just that the newer stories it's hard to really do the bromance justice because of all the wives and kids. But to me that's what old school is, more focus on their relationships to each other and how together they deal with harsh circumstances like crashes, Kidnappings, earthquakes, fires, etc...

There seems to be less of that going on these days and I really do think it's just because they have a lot more going on in terms of families and growing up in general. It is hard to keep coming up with new and creative ways to explain the absence of the misc. family members. I keep them out as much as possible, but even I have had to incorporate scene with them in there to make things believable. For instance, in Hope, there was no way the guys could have gone missing that long and not have the wives just be a bit curious to wonder where they were or have them show up at the hospital after being found. I think it's just in how much emphasis is put on that.

The guys being in a bus crash = old school

Just one of the guys and his family in a bus crash = boring and new school. LOL

A wife being in a crash and the guys all come together and help cope with what happened = old school (but not something I'd read. lol)

Just a wife being in a crash and seeing him deal with it alone with just his family = who cares? new school LOL

To sum up - Old school is awesome! New school is not! lmao

Aww now that Dottie, Jen and Reb are back, I am hoping more people will resurface. We need Kelly and Sarah to come back. Maybe I need to write another romance because that's what brought Sarah out of hiding the last time! LOL

Just had to share this!  While filling out the firsts and lasts survey, I looked up an old website I remember reading stories on, wiggycool.com.  The site has been down since at least 2001, but some of it is still viewable through the Wayback Machine.  Just check out the summaries of these hosted stories from circa 1999: https://web.archive.org/web/20000620132132/http://www.bsbfanfic.8m.com/group.html

Click the Nick link at the bottom for even more!  You will definitely notice some patterns.  Lots of girl groups.  Lots of girls moving in next door to a Backstreet Boy, vacationing in Florida, or winning contests to meet the Boys.  Lots of... snow storms, for some reason?  I don't remember that being a big storyline, but apparently it was on this site.  And lots of stories titled "So-and-So's BSB Story."  Okay then. LOL

In short, we've come a LONG way in this fandom in terms of creativity and originality!
