Your challenge is to write a short story inspired by the lyrics of one of the following Track #2 BSB songs:
Anywhere for You
Quit Playing Games
As Long As You Love Me
I Want it That Way
Shape of My Heart
Everybody
Just Want You to Know
Everything But Mine
Bigger
Permanent Stain
You can interpret the song as literally or as loosely as you like. Your story doesn't necessarily have to fit with the whole song, but should work with at least one lyric.
This is an anonymous challenge, which means you won't reveal what you wrote until the end of the challenge. After all entries are submitted, we'll turn this into a game where we try to guess who wrote what story and what song it was based on (I thought the last part would make for a fun extra challenge!). That means you should not submit your entry under your own username, and you should not use any lyrics from the song in the title, summary, or text of the story. If you really like songfics and want to go back and add those things in after the challenge is over, that's fine. You can also add your own username as a co-author after the challenge is over if you want your story listed under your name.
For the challenge, you will post your story under the challenges account Mare created last year.

You can also use this account to review other people's submissions. This will make it possible to give feedback without either revealing that you didn't write that story or reviewing yourself to try to fool people.
The last day to submit a story will be Saturday, August 16. That gives you one month. We will start the guessing part of it on Sunday, August 17th - more information to follow on that.

This is not the same idea, but this whole Nick & Knight tragedy gave me an idea for another challenge. What about some kind of crossover challenge, where you take one of your own characters (Backstreet Boy or original) and someone else's character from another story and write them in a situation together? Kinda like how some TV shows have crossover events... ER and Third Watch comes to mind; they started a storyline on an episode of ER and finished it on an episode of Third Watch. Would anyone be interested in doing something like that?

Yep, and you write them according to whatever is considered "canon" in the stories they're from. Like maybe Nick from It Stays, who has MINE scars all over his body, finally snaps and starts mutilating other people, like Howie from Sick as My Secrets, who will have the last laugh once he starts bleeding all over Nick.
That's a bad example, but I think it would be easier with one original character or two of the Boys from different AUs, so they wouldn't have as much canon in common. Unless you wanted to go the whole doppleganger route like in Whatever the Night May Bring.

Yeah, that's why I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested. I would still love to do an anonymous one, but I'm not sure what kind of prompt would be as fun as the fairy tale one.

Yeah, I think it'd have to be based on submissions, to avoid any issues with plagiarism.

I always have a harder time in the summer since the kids are home lol. They keep me busy until they are in bed and even then I dont get on the computer until 10pm or later some nights. When they start school back up the 13th of August I will be able to do more things lol.
but i may have something though...since I am sure most of us love music..why not to a story based completely off a song...not necessarily a BSB song but anything from anyone? seems cheesey but its an idea LOL

LOL I'm a teacher, so it's completely opposite for me. Those darn kids! :)
We could maybe use a BSB song as a prompt. If we could agree on a song that could be taken in a lot of different ways, that would work. It would be interesting to see how everyone interpreted it according to what they like to write.

I haven't done a BSB song challenge in ages. They've got such a huge catalog of songs now too, so that gives us some wiggle room in what to choose from. The tricky part will be narrowing it down.

I like the suggestions of "rewriting" someones story ... or maybe fanfic'ing a fanfic? I've read a few stories where I'd love to take something from it and make a side story.
But I guess a song fic wouldn't be too bad if we can get some good songs to choose from...

I was thinking, instead of trying to narrow it down to one song that everyone agrees upon, what if we vote on a track number, and then you'd have to choose a song that is that track on one of their albums. So, say, if we voted track #10, Mare could write a story about One Phone Call, Carter could write one about Safest Place to Hide, etc. Then there would be a little more choice in there, but still limitations.

That sounds good. Just let me know what you guys want to do and I'll make a poll with whatever. I think I'm skipping this challenge. I am having a hard enough time writing the story I'm working on now and so far I've been kind of eh about all of the ideas which tells me I'm probably not meant to write one but I'll gladly help pick a number or whatever you need me to do.
Besides, I already wrote my Nick gets kidnapped by a girl band story and posted it in this thread. LOL

Cool! Mare, would you want to set up a poll with Tracks 1-16 (the most on any BSB album)? We should probably allow the option to vote for several choices, so we don't end up with a bunch of different ones tied with 1 vote.

^Sorry if I'm a little confused... Please correct me if I am wrong, the story will be based on one of the songs mentioned above but we can't include lyrics from that song? I mean for example if the story is based on I want it that way, the characters can't say "You are my fire."

Right. The challenge is to see if your readers can guess what song was your inspiration without you making it obvious by including lyrics. So instead of having a character say "You are my fire" (whatever that means LOL), you could communicate that feeling through their actions.

Use that creative mind of yours and morph what you were going to originally write and make it work with one of those track two songs. It's not like their lyrics are so earth shattering and straight ahead. I Want It That Way you can morph into basically anything LOL

That's what I did; I put them all on a playlist. When I voted (and #2 was one of my votes), I thought I had a couple of good options, but I ended up picking a completely different song and coming up with a much better idea than I had before!

I have an idea outlined out, just haven't actually started writing it yet. Is anyone else planning something? I think I set the deadline for next weekend, but we can always extend it if that would allow more people to participate. It's not going to be very fun guessing if it's just me and Tracy LOL.

I wrote mine but I havent typed it out. I think it can be either or? I remember her saying something about it in the past replies somewhere. I made mine just a one shot. I wont post it until next week probably. I literally went through four different songs until I found the right one that fits though. I started with one song in mind..then two...then three and finally found one that fit with my storyline lol.

I wont be able to participate... my cat decided it would be a good idea to use my internet card as a stepping stool. She snapped the usb Art tried to fix it but couldnt. Unless my brother in law has an extra one i wont have another csrd until at least Sept 1st. It sucks cause its alrdy written :(

No worries. Since no one else has posted an entry yet, let's just push back the deadline. Those of you who are planning to participate, post your story when you get it done, and when we have enough to play the guessing game (at least 4 or 5?), we'll set a new deadline and wrap it up. I have an idea for mine that I really like, but I just ran out of time to get it done. I've been so busy with back to school stuff this week, and next week is going to be even crazier.
