Title: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: mare on July 21, 2014, 07:43:12 AM
Now that this summer's reading challenge is winding down, I thought I'd start this thread as a place where you can post suggestions or comments on how things have gone this year and past years. I am also doing this so I remember the new rules I will be implementing based on the last few years of doing this and seeing some of the things I've seen so far.

Some new rules starting in 2015:

~ You can only submit a collaboration if all writers are participating in the challenge.  The story can be submitted by both people and it can be read by two different people but I think it's fair. Otherwise, it can be an awkward situation for the person reading it. And you never know if the other person who wrote it would want it to be read for a challenge.

~ When you volunteer to participate in the challenge, before I allow you to submit stories you need to meet the following guidelines:
-Under your username where it says reviews, you must have at least 200 there, unless you are a newer member (less than two years) then I will allow 100.
- I will check to see if you respond to the reviews that you receive, if you don't then this challenge is not for you.

~Before I allow a story, I will actually click on the first chapter and if it's laced with a ton of grammatical errors, I will not allow it as part of the challenge unless it's fixed.

The one thing I am trying to get rid of, is the element of feeling like something is homework or just not reciprocal. When a story is full of errors it becomes more of a chore for the person reading it and could be pretty awkward if that person isn't accustomed to giving concrit. In turn, no one gets anything out of the challenge. Same on the opposite end, if you happen to have someone reading your story who doesn't give concrit and isn't the best at reviewing or responding, it becomes very one sided.

I would prefer only a handful of people who take this seriously than a ton of people who don't.

So, there ya go, any other thoughts and suggestions would be great! Even if you aren't participating this year but have in the past and plan on it in the future, I'd love to hear from you!

I bette get busy at editing and grammar lol. I know i have such a hard time with it.

But all the rules for next year seem fair :) if i feel i cannot improve i will read instead. I enjoyed the challenge very much this yesr and it was my first year as well.

Aww, well you can ask people for help (including me) I'd always be glad to help anyone as long as I have the time and I see people are willing to try. Sometimes all we need is an extra pair of eyes on something.

I have been doing a lot of research and taking quizzes and stuff online to improve. This challenge has really helped me and opened my eyes about writing how i used too. I loved it.

I think it's fair. It's really frustrating and a little like depressing to have someone reading your story for this challenge and just stop before they even finish. Cause then you're like okay, what happened? And while yes you might know better your first thought is still if it was the story itself LOL.

And I do feel a firm grasp of at least grammatical skills should be necessary. I mean yes I want to give concrit but if I was put in that situation it'd almost feel like rewriting it for them and that would be pure homework LOL.

As for collaborations, I don't know. I mean in my case Julie knew I was submitting Undead and was totally cool with it. If I wasn't responding to reviews for both hers and my chapters, she would've responded to the ones for chapters she wrote.

I think this was already a rule but people should leave feedback that is more than "I love it"  or  "great job"

I know some people might be shy but I think part of the challenge is leaving feedback just as much as it is to read something you normal wouldn't, at least for me it is anyway.

I agree!

I think all of the suggested rules make a lot of sense.

Yup, that was one of the rules & always has been. No one gets anything out of the one or two word reviews. Outside of this challenge it's fine & a sign of saying "hello, I'm here & reading!" But for the actual challenge there should be more going on besides that. One chapter okay but not more. It once again comes down to the reciprocal experience which is the most important part of this thing since most of us do this to use as a motivator to write.

I hope I dont come off as jerkish but I agree with Mare.  Reviews like that are nice  but I enjoy feedback where the reason gives a little detail rather than good job or I didnt like it. I am nosey and want to know why I did a good job or even a bad job too lol if that makes any sense.

I'm always tempted to ask "what did you love about it?" Or "what was so great?"

I do that to my students all the time when they tell me they like a song. "What is it about the song you like?"

They hate when I do that. I never accept the "I don't know...I just do" answer lol

I ask them can I say that if I ever fail you? "I don't know..I just did!"
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!

What I like about this is even if you're not getting concrit I love the comments on little things throughout the story. Sometimes if it's been awhile it's easy to forget just what the heck you wrote in there LOL. That's happened to me with both WOOMD and RMTW in this challenge, but in a good way.

"good job" or "I like this" just feels lazy. Not to sound like an asshole lol. I love all reviews in a normal circumstances. But in  challenge there should be more. I want to see thoughts as people are reading it.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: mare on July 24, 2014, 05:55:47 AM
It does come off as lazy.

I feel the same way. I love reading random comments & then having to go back & read the referenced chapter. It's another reason why I like to submit at least one really old story per challenge. It's also nice to see how much you've grown.

Therein lies the problem. If the coauthor is not participating in the challenge but still accepting and responding to feedback...the person doing the challenge gets the work while the coauthor gets the glory. If they aren't participating, why should they be rewarded by having a person required to read and give quality feedback on their writing? Then, the person tasked with responding to that feedback is now off the hook for half the story.

rose pretty much hit the nail on the head with that comment. That is what I meant. The one to three word sentances that make me wonder what it was about the chapter, or what the heck the person was talking about. I dont mind going back to read but if I am doing that for every chapter, it kinda isnt fair in a way to me as a writer.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!

I am very critical of myself.  Even though i dont always like concrit i can learn from it. It can make me better. I also hsve a hard time giving negative feedback but i try lol. If a story is just really good it can be hard to give critical feedback. But i agree one liners like i love it or great chapter is just nothing.

Concrit is hard to take.  I loved getting it from my reader last year but it is hard to take at first because I easily take things as an attack so the first reviews were not taken well... I'm sure Rose remembers those early review days. HEH.

I really want to participate in this next year and agree with the updated rules.

To be honest i almost quit writing. I had a hard time taking it. But writing is my hobby and i love it. So i took it in stride and decided to get better. It will either pay off or it wont lol

I get what you guys are saying. I am really not used to concrit and even though Rose told me she didn't mean it in a mean way I took it to heart because I am hard on myself. It is not her fault at all. I know she was trying to help me and I even asked her privately about some thing. The challenge this yyear taught me not to be so hard on myself.

One of the reason is I look up to Rose and the other girls a lot and I just beat myself up over it. I need to get myself to stop doing that because I cannot please everybody. I sometimes forget that.

I hear ya! I sometimes will have Art read my stories...but even though he is my hubby...I wont let him read them. It took me almost 3yrs to tell him i even wrote fan fiction LOL

It's good that you did! Ultimately none of us are perfect and the reason we practice our hobbies is to get better. If we were playing soccer instead of writing and someone came along and showed us a different way to handle the ball that would help us be a better player it would be no different than getting concrit on a story. You can either think of it as an opportunity to learn a new way of doing things or you can continue to do things your own way! :)

Sorry if I made you feel like quitting. Like Jullily said, you can take those suggestions and choose what you want to do with them. That's what concrit is all about. Just a chance to get to see an opinion from another set of eyes.

If it makes you feel any better, I think it's just as hard to give it because you never know how people are going to take it until you go into a thread and see them talking about you. lol

No mare it was all me lol. I am very hard on myself always have been. Its been so long since i have gotten concrit of any kind. All Of Yout Life & Happily Never After were my come back stories. I hadnt written in so long that i had forgotten so much about how to write.

I should've put another story in rather than the collab, I just didn't think to be honest.  But I will next time.

My reviews probably aren't very critical, I tend to write my reaction to the story more than anything.  I'll have to improve on that I think.

Seriously! LOL. It's not that easy to give concrit. I give it with the best intentions qnd really only when I do this challenge. I try to be as nice and constructive as possible. But the reactions aren't always the easiest.

To be honest I dont have a mean bone in my body lol. I try to take it in stride i really do but I knew it would be a hard story to read since it was my first story i six years. I just had to figure out how to bounce back from it and redeem myself lol.

You can just look at it and see how much you've grown since then. Sometimes that's the best way to think of something. Reread the old one then read your most recent and if you see a noticeable difference, that should make you proud.

I have re-read a ton of stuff lately lol. I was all over the place. I felt like a little kid had written it instead of a 29yr old lol. Some of my first ones are just terrible.like why are they still up terrible lol. But i am learning like i have said i am my own worst enemy most of the time. I have been like it ny entire life. I should write a story about it lol it might help me in the long run ;)

I didn't feel bad. I was just sad that I made you feel bad. Everyone who knows me on here, knows I am very honest about things when it comes to writing especially with this particular challenge. I normally never leave concrit when I review stories not for a challenge unless there is some glowing error that really needs to not be overlooked. But for challenge purposes I make sure I do give an informed opinion on what I'm seeing whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. I make sure I'm nice about it, I think that's the only thing I get paranoid about. When I saw you in here talking about it, I was afraid I may have been harsh, glad to know that wasn't the case!

Most people do have a hard time accepting criticism, I do too! I spent most of my freshman year at college bawling because it was like an AI audition in front of Simon Cowell every day! LOL

Concrit is sometimes hard to take but I really feel lucky when I receive them. It meant that the person reading your story cares enough about you and wanted you to improve and be a better writer. I actually want to submit The Other Side of NC for the reading challenge to have concrit reviews but it is not finished and it would not be fair to the reader to make them read unfinished story.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: mare on August 03, 2014, 03:49:21 AM
I have really been considering that as another possible rule for next summer but I'm on the fence about it. Whether to make t a mandatory thing that the story submitted is complete or not.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this? I mean I see pros and cons for both ways.

Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: Rose on August 03, 2014, 04:05:48 AM
I can see both sides. Only one story I submitted was incomplete but it was SO close, I figured it wouldn't matter. And I do think the feedback when it was steady was helping kick our buts in gear and now we only have a few chapters before finishing. I think the rule should be it must be at the halfway point at least. This way you have a good feel of the plot and where it will likely go so you can give proper concrit.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: RokofAges75 on August 03, 2014, 04:11:25 AM
I think it's better when the story is complete, but you might keep some people from participating by making that a rule.  I think, like Rose said, as long as the story is far enough for the reader to get a good sense of the plot and where it's going, it still works for the point of this challenge.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: mare on August 03, 2014, 04:30:57 AM
That's what I have it as now, and I do think it does help kick start people if they are in the process of updating it. At the same time, it is hard when you are reading something incomplete and doing the challenge because you feel almost an obligation to have to follow through to the end and people might randomly start adding chapters while you are reading which might also mess people's reading patterns up or they might not ever finish the story and leave you eternally hanging lol

On the other side, reading a complete story is great but then again sometimes it might be too late to hear that concrit but I guess that depends on if the author is actively still writing or not because you could take that concrit from one story and just translate it into some of your others that you are currently working on. Even still as a writer, I would probably get more out of concrit from something in progress than I would something complete but as a reader I would prefer something complete.

Maybe I'll make a poll. Why not? Polls seem to be in these days! LOL

LOL!

I do just want to add that the way the challenge is now it's set to that second rule but sometimes those stories do not read like they are 2/3 finished. Keep that in mind too.

Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: RokofAges75 on August 03, 2014, 04:51:38 AM
Yeah, as a reader, I would prefer to read something complete so I can give feedback on the whole story.  Also, I would not want to feel obligated to read the rest of the story after the challenge if I didn't really want to or to have to read a lot more than I signed up for because of the story being updated as the challenge was going on.  That said, as long as we get a choice in what we read, it shouldn't matter because readers who feel the same way I do can just choose stories that are complete.

From the writing side of things, I'm kind of on the fence.  I usually only submit complete stories for this challenge, but this year I would have submitted Song for the Undead for sure and maybe Sick as My Secrets because those are really the only stories I have worth submitting that haven't already been read for this challenge.  I'm glad Rose went ahead and submitted Undead, but I'm also glad I can wait another year before submitting SAMS because it will be so much farther (hopefully finished?) by next summer.

There's not a rule about submitting the same story more than one year, is there?  Because I've always tried to submit stories that haven't been read for this before, but I'm running out of ones to submit!  Have any of you submitted a story that was already chosen and read for a previous year's challenge?

Sometimes it's hard to know if your story is 2/3 finished or not, unless you have the whole thing planned out chapter by chapter.  Otherwise it's just an estimate.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: mare on August 03, 2014, 04:58:00 AM
No, you can submit the same story every single year because the rule is you can't read the same story for the challenge, so you'd just always get someone else reading it. A new pair of eyes for the same story is always a good thing too.

And that is also a good point when it comes to picking your stories. Sometimes people only have a few left to chose from though and sometimes people claim they are more than halfway done but when you read it you see they are clearly not or at least it reads that way.

As far as the whole obligation part, that's why I decided to make that slight change from last year. Last year I said that as long as the story was being updated while the challenge was going on, you had to keep reading. I decided that wasn't really fair to the reader to have to wait on the person updating it to finish up their surveys. So now, once that final survey is done, the obligation is over. Then if you want to continue reading it's your choice and not mine.

Exactly why maybe if the writer isn't really sure, in that instance, they shouldn't submit that particular story. I know if I had no clue where my story was going and how long it would take me to get there, it wouldn't be a good thing to ask people to read.
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!

^ That seems very fair.  And that's a good point; it's probably nice to get this kind of feedback from more than one person.  Maybe I will re-submit some older stories if I do this next year.  Hopefully I will; I missed it this year, but knew I wouldn't have time to devote to it until July.  Next year June will still be busy, but at least I won't be moving on top of taking two classes.

There's not a rule about submitting the same story more than one year, is there?  Because I've always tried to submit stories that haven't been read for this before, but I'm running out of ones to submit!  Have any of you submitted a story that was already chosen and read for a previous year's challenge?

Yeah it's really the writing side that makes me go well....incomp letely (but over halfway) might be more beneficial. Perfect example was Undead cause I figured a fresh pair of eyes reading it would be awesome. I've submitted Remember Me This Way twice now. Mainly because if there's any fanfic (besides Undead lol) that I know I'd really consider someday trying to transition into a "real" novel, it's that one. It's gonna probably be something I keep doing that with because the more eyes, the better.

Which is good cause...withou t you all I'm going to be is... Innnnnncoooooo mmmmpleeeeettt e....*goes to the knees*

Yeah I really couldn't help myself just now LOL.

Yup, the more eyes the better but also the more times it's submitted the less chance that there are people who haven't already read it. Sometimes I think that's really the challenge for some people. Fr the more popular stories, they have pretty much been read by everyone already doing the challenge so they kind of end up being left out. That's why I avoid submitting "Why I'd Do it all Again" or "It Stays With You." Although I might next summer because they're old enough now that some people may have completely missed them. LOL

I hope you get a chance to do this next year, Julie!

Oh another thing I'm on the fence about is the readers only thing I did this year. Ritz is the only person doing it this year and she rocks so it isn't really an issue but I couldn't help but wonder what if it happened to be someone who wasn't that great who didn't care if they completed the challenge? There's really nothing I could do as a 'punishment' for those people. At least if you submit a story I can put it on hold but if there's nothing to put on hold all I can do is bug that person and hope it's enough.

I would love some of our great reviewers like Pammy, Silver Knife and GrunAugen to do a challenge like this because when it comes to handing out feedback they are awesome at it. From what I have seen anyway. I mean not that they even know or care about this challenge, but still I don't want to take that away from them if they did choose to participate.

That's true about the readers, but if you don't let readers-only participate, that means fewer stories are chosen to be read in the first place.  I guess I would rather have one of my stories chosen by someone who reads part of it and then flakes than have it chosen by no one.  At least then I'd get some feedback out of it.  And you could still shame the people who flake here on the forum - that is "punishment" enough LOL.

Yes, yes you are!  I feel bad that my story is the one causing someone to be shamed though.  I hope it's not that agonizing to read, although it's obvious that Song for the Undead is 1) a zombie apocalypse story and 2) really long, so if that wasn't something she wanted to commit to reading, she probably shouldn't have picked it.

Yeah it really does make you wonder and feel bad our story is causing the problem.

And that's why the shaming needs to happen. No one should have those types of thoughts but those ARE the thoughts that would naturally run through your mind when someone fails to come through and review something when they are supposed to!

Judging by her reviews though, it does seem like she is enjoying it. She's not responding to her feedback either which again doesn't always sit well for people who leave it. I have seen that pattern before. People just will stop giving you feedback if you don't bother answering it and rightly so. I don't know, it's ALWAYS been a huge peeve of mine. There's no way I'm going to read your stuff if you aren't going to take the time to acknowledge the fact that I am. To me it's the same as if BSB never bothered to thank anyone for buying their CDs. Fans of anything across the board just want someone to say "Hey thanks!"

Reviews work the same way! I wish there was a way to see who is reading your stories on the site because those people who read and don't leave reviews are another reason why so many authors second guess themselves and why it's a mandatory part of this challenge.

ESPECIALLY if you write, you should ALWAYS leave a review for other authors. I can't tell you how many times I have to bite my tongue on any given day when I see someone say "Oh my God you have to check that story out, it's AMAZING!!" and then I go check that story out, look at the reviews and see ZERO by the person recommending it! AHH! Drives me insane!! Especially if they happen to complain about lack of reviews themselves which almost ALWAYS happens!! Or of people say things alluding to the fact that they have read or are reading your story but once again not a single review but also complain about lack of reviews. SHAMING NEEDS TO COMMENCE!

Ah, that felt good. lol

Besides everyone knew going into this because I made it no secret, that if you don't' do what needs to be done, this would happen, right? LOL

LOL You know I agree with you, especially when it comes to reviewing and replying to reviews.   I never know how to react when someone says they've supposedly read almost all my stories, yet I don't remember ever getting a review from them.  On one hand, I'm like, "Oh, thanks!" and on the other, I'm like, "Why didn't I know you were reading my stories?"
Title: Re: Reading challenge suggestion box and new rules for next year!
Post by: mare on August 03, 2014, 06:42:21 AM
^ The second reaction is always my initial one but I don't want to come off as pushy but yes, it's that thought I instantly have! Again not as often if I know they don't write, but if they write, it just kind of ends up annoying me and takes away from them telling me they are reading my stuff in the first place.

I just had that happen a few days ago where someone said something about one of my stories that made it obvious they were reading and I wanted to be like "And not even one review?" LMAO I'm so anal!

Maybe it's just me or a select few of us who do review everything we read but it's simple. If I haven't reviewed it, I haven't read it. That's just how it goes! Sometimes I will read one chapter of something and then decide I don't like it and I'll move on but other than that, it's how I roll...homey!

We owe it to each other. After all we don't get paid to do it, so the only thing we get off of this is the praise telling us maybe we aren't wasting our time? lol

Exactly.  Reviews are like the "suggested donation" some places that are free will ask for.  If you don't give a donation, even a small one, you're a douche.  We're providing free entertainment.  If people are being entertained by our stories, the least they can do is say so!

Yeah, I don't know if something like that would shame people into reviewing or turn them off.  I put "Feedback makes fanfic worth writing!" above the comment box on my site, but this is definitely more direct LOL.
