Title: DNA
Post by: RokofAges75 on January 09, 2019, 07:54:45 PM
The tracklisting for DNA has been released!

1. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
2. Nobody Else
3. Breathe
4. New Love
5. Passionate
6. Is it Just Me?
7. Chances
8. No Place
9. Chateau
10. The Way It Was
11. Just Like You Like It
12. OK

Thoughts?  Any tracks you're especially curious to hear?

Personally, I think it's funny and a little weird that they have another song called "Breathe," and it's also Track 3, just like on IAWLT.  I can't wait to hear that one to compare it to the old Breathe.  I'm also cracking up at "OK."  I tend to like the songs with simple titles, though, so I can't wait to hear it!  The fact that it's the last track makes me think it will either be an amazing finale or a snoozefest because last tracks tend to be one or the either.

I wonder if Breathe will be the A capella version of the song in IAWLT?  Is it true there’s going to be an a capella song? I really hope so!

I hadn't heard that, but I have no idea.  I guess it could be?  That might make more sense than having two songs with the same title LOL.  I actually do hope it's a different song though.  I like the old Breathe, but would rather have a new song than an a capella version.

I thought I read that somewhere but I'm not sure if it was an official article or a fan mentioning it. I hope they have an A Capella song and I agree, I think I'd rather a new Breathe than a remake of the older one. I am curious about the way it was. I'm hoping it's an emo ballad lol maybe that'll be the A Capella one. An A Capella  emo ballad. Yes please!

Breathe is the a capella song and it's arranged by the same guy who does the arrangements for Pentatonix so it's a true a capella. Supposedly it's a new Breathe but I did laugh they have songs with the same title on back to back albums lol. I'm really curious about New Love after the way they talked it up at the live stream thing in November, and Passionate since they sang a little of it. I have pretty high hopes for this album as a whole.

I read yesterday that Howie aid in an interview this was originally going to be a DOUBLE ALBUM though and that about kills me, cause think of all the new music we could've had! lmao. Apparently they recorded over 50 songs this cycle. It would've been a "digital" (pop) album and an "analog" (more country inspired) one before they got DGBMH. I guess it basically flipped the album on it's head and they got more inspired or something, and DNA morphed into being the DNA of BSB music wise due to all the genres being more varied on the album.

It makes sense that they would have over 50 songs, for as many years as they've been working on this freaking album!  I hope some of the rejects leak like they usually do.  I love the idea of a digital and analog album.  With how different each of the three songs we've heard sound, they totally could have done that, and it would have been great!  I love both types of music - not necessarily country, but songs like No Place that are more acoustic sounding and not all synthesized like Don't Go Breaking My Heart.  Hopefully this means there will be no skip songs, if they had to narrow it down to 12 tracks out of 50+!

That song is gorgeous. I actually got emotional after listening to it. I feel like this is going to be another Millennium for them. They deserve it. Good job boys! 4 for 4. I hope we don’t get anymore new music now until the release date.

I don't think we will since the album is out next Friday.

Breathe is unbelievable though. I can't get enough of it. And I agree, so far they are 4 for 4 with me and usually by now there's a track where I'm kind of eh, over. You can tell they've worked hard on this album and they deserve all the good things happening right now.

It's so beautiful!  I downloaded it this morning and listened to it for the first time in the car on the way to work, and it about brought tears to my eyes!  The harmonies sound so good, and I love the lyrics as well.

I can't wait to hear the rest of this album, although I agree that I don't want to hear any more tracks until next Friday.  These first four tracks are so diverse, it's hard to pick a favorite; I love them all for different reasons.  I wonder what else we'll get?

I am obsessed with this song. I must have listened to it 10 times already. This is a very rare thing for me. I’m the type of person that even if I love a song, I’m done with it after maybe three times a day tops. I think what I love so much about this one, is the complex harmonies. I’m loving singing along and figuring out each chord as they sing. I also love how flawlessly they blend when tagging off on the melody. It’s so natural. They just kind of morph into one person singing. Kevin really needs to sing lead more often. I also love how all of them are singing in each one of these songs. They have their own parts like millennium. Even though Howie’s part in Chances bugs me lol I’m willing to overlook that after hearing this song. Love!

I have it on repeat right now.  The harmonies are so rich and beautiful!  It really showcases their vocal talent.  I also love how they're giving all five a chance to shine on the solos on this album!  They seem to have figured out how to utilize Brian better on this album than they did on IAWLT, and I love that Howie and Kevin are getting so many more solos than they used to.  I love Kevin's voice!
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: Rose on January 18, 2019, 09:55:01 PM
Yeah, I was worried about Brian for obvious reasons but they've used him in a really smart way. Making sure they turn his new range into something they can use.

I can't get over how much I love Breathe. So freaking beautiful.

Title: Re: DNA

I hope they do it live. It'll be tricky because of all the layering, but they really need to include this one on the tour.

If Pentatonix can do it, so can our Boys!
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: smh1105 on January 20, 2019, 12:09:14 PM
I think they will definitely do this song on tour. They have said they are a vocal harmony group and can sing a Capella at the drop of a hat, so this song doesn't surprise me too much. It shows where they came from and how far they have come with their voices. It is an amazing song!

I too am loving that they are each getting more of a chance to sing, and I do hope to hear more of Kevin though! They picked the perfect name for it too. I think DGBMH is my favorite so far still and now Breath. No Place is great too, the video made me cry the first time I watched it.

I do like Chances, but I think the one thing that bothers me is that they don't ever sing together as a group on the song. It just keeps going from one person to the next (and I think Kevin and Howie should have had longer parts) but the first time I heard it I just kept waiting for them to sing together and it never happened, I was like 'oh, ok'. It's still a great song though, I still listen to it, so I'm not trying to hate on it.
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: mare on January 20, 2019, 12:20:29 PM
I feel the same way about Chances. Howie's part in that song bothers me because it's too low for him lol I do love it though.
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: RokofAges75 on January 20, 2019, 12:29:10 PM
I think my current favorite is No Place, but that may just be because it's one of the most recent ones.  I really do love all four tracks.  And all the music videos are great too!  Even the little lyric video they released for Breathe was a nice touch.  Being back with a record label and having that financial backing has its perks!

I see your point about Chances, and I agree about Howie's part too.  If they had just made the song a little longer, they could have given Howie a better part and had someone else sing the low part.

I love the album title DNA and both the meanings behind it.  It's nice to see them come up with a meaningful, original title and not just borrow the title of one of the tracks like they did on the last two albums.  (And, ironically, I think "This Is Us" is the album where they tried too hard to NOT just be themselves.)
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: smh1105 on January 20, 2019, 01:28:16 PM
I think they just had some really good producers on this album. And I know AJ kind of explained in an interview that they sort of went back to the "formula" that worked so well for them back in the day with like millennium and Black & Blue. That might be what is working so well for them again. Having really good producers and waiting for just the right songs.
(I totally agree with you about the "This Is Us" album, its good, but it just really wasn't them, it did seem like they were trying too hard to sound like what was popular at the time. It just didnt really work for them though)
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: RokofAges75 on January 20, 2019, 03:21:13 PM
Yeah, they definitely took their time with this album, and it seems to be worth the wait!  I think having a label behind them again probably helped them get better producers.  I'm sure the success of the Vegas residency helped too; more people are willing to work with them now that they seem to be making a comeback.  I love when the Boys write their own music, but these songs are really good and seem perfect for them, regardless of how much of a hand they had in writing them.  They sound current, and yet, still BSB.  They don't have that feel of trying too hard to stay relevant.

Is anyone doing anything special Friday, a.k.a. album release day?!  I seriously considered taking the day off work so I could stay up late Thursday night, download it as soon as it's available, and listen to it all night... but then I remembered I have to chaperone a dance after school Friday.  Blah!  You think 5th graders would mind listening to the full Backstreet Boys album at their dance? LOL  Either way, I'm glad it's at least being released on a Friday so I can listen to it all weekend.  I'll go back to work next week with lots of new songs stuck in my head!

Sadly no I have to work. But after I close down the store I always get music playing. My coworkers know me well for it. Usually it's a mix of everything but I've already warned them that Friday is their new album and they were gonna have to deal with me playing it lmao.

That would be so funny to see people's reaction hearing Backstreet Boys play over and over all day LOL.

I wish I was doing something fun and exciting. I might stay up and listen to the album tonight, not sure yet. I'll probably just watch the live stream of their iheart radio release party on youtube. and listen to their music all Friday night, maybe even try to get some writing done. And Hopefully chat with you all about what you think of the album!  ;D

I'm hoping their new album might inspire a new story, from me and others. I've been itching to write something lately, but I just can't come up with any ideas. And I miss reading fics too.

Yay, I finally have time to come gush about the album!  I stayed up way too late last night to watch them on Fallon, download the album as soon as it was released, and listen to it once before I went to bed.  It was worth being tired today, though!

I love it!  There isn't a single track that I don't care for.  My favorites so far, aside from the four we'd already heard, are New Love, Passionate, and The Way It Was.  New Love is so freaking cool; I loved it from the first listen.  Passionate was more of a grower for me, but I was in love with it by the third listen.  Such a jam!  The Way It Was gave me goosebumps!  It's such a beautiful throwback ballad that showcases Nick's voice and the classic background harmonies so well.  I can't wait to see them sing that one live - they better include it on the setlist!

What are your thoughts on the album?

I'm hoping for the same!  It would be nice to see a new wave of fanfic now that the album's out.

Breathe really made me want to write a short story or something, but I don't have an idea for one yet either... I just really love the lyrics!  None of the other songs have sparked an idea yet either, but maybe that's a good thing... I really just need to stay focused on the novel I'm working on.  I did use a line from Don't Go Breaking My Heart for its title, so I guess that one inspired me last summer!

Same for me! I was up sooo late, it was hard to fall asleep after being so excited listening to the album for the first time. I had a hard time waking up. The chicken suit bit was hilarious!

I agree that there is not a single song that I don't love. So it is really hard to chose lol, But I too really liked New love. The way it Was is so good and I really like OK.

Have you hear the Japan bonus tracks? Do You Remember, Best Days, and Said I Love You. I like Do You Remember the most out of those three.

Lets hope to see some new stories soon.

Breath would make a good basis for a short story, like about one of the guys looking back on a relationship after being dumped. or something, idk. lol.

I'm still waiting for that great idea to pop into my head to start writing soon. Maybe ill try a couple short stories and see if anything more comes.

I listened to it on the way to and from school and overall loved it. Breathe is still my favorite but Passionate comes in a very close second. It has a very Duran Duran vibe to it. I also love the flute samples in New Love. Loved the old school fifties vibe of The Way it Was. I loved the harmonies in Chateau but some of the lyrics in that song made me laugh. The line about the space in my bed with the shape of your head. Like where is the rest of her body? It's almost like a sequel to One Phone Call where Brian takes the head off his shoulder and places it on his bed lol I liked all the other ones. I think the only one I wasn't totally in love with was Nobody Else.

I really think Kevin needs more leads in the future. I am in love with his voice. I'm so glad those beautiful harmonies were all over this CD. I'm so happy for them! I still haven't heard the extra tracks from the Japan CD. Hopefully someone will link them in here.

I think that's my problem - so many of their songs are about romantic relationships, and true to where the guys are in their lives, most of these new ones seem to relate more to established relationships, not new ones... which I think is challenging as far as fanfic goes.  I don't want to write a story about any of their real life marriages, and I also don't want to create a fictional wife/girlfriend just for the sake of a short story, so I feel like my only options would be to 1) come up with a new romance novel idea, or 2) write a short story about one of the couples from one of my old novels.  But I don't feel like writing romance at all.  I wish they had some more bromantic songs on there... I'd rather be inspired to write a bromance!

Passionate is definitely retro sounding, but still modern in a way.

I love the flute in New Love too!  It's so random, but it makes that song so unique-sounding and cool!

I don't listen to a ton of oldies music on a regular basis, but I LOVE when BSB goes for that sound.  The Way It Was reminds me of Man on the Moon from All American, which is my favorite track on that album!

LOL I had the same thought about Chateau.  I kinda like the shape of your head line because it's so rhymey, but it sounds awkward at the same time.  I was half expecting them to sing "shape of my heart" the first time until they said "head."  You should totally write that Brian story; I still think of that every time I hear One Phone Call!

Kevin has a great voice!  I love the balance between the five of them across the whole album.  It's pretty Nick-heavy, which is fine by me because Nick's voice has matured so much and is so amazing now, but the other four all have plenty of opportunities to shine.  I love all of Brian's solos!

We should make a writing challenge for a short story for each of the titles off the album. Once one is taken someone else has to choose a different one, to see what you all come up with it.

I wish there was a bromantic song on this album. I mean I love these guys but if we were to make a
drinking game with how many times we heard the word ‘baby’  lol

I’d like to blame their maturity and happiness with their families on why I stopped writing.

Good idea for a writing challenge!  I call "OK"!  I actually got an idea last night about that song.

LOL, I hear you on the writing thing.  It was definitely easier when they were younger and less settled.  I moved from writing mostly about Brian to writing more Nick-centered stories when Brian got married and then had Baylee, but now Nick's in the exact same place in his life, as are they all.   It's hard work finding ways to get rid of the wives and kids without killing them.  I have no problem killing wives, but I still won't kill the kids in a story.

Just give them deadly diseases lmao.

My favorite is absolutely Passionate. On first listen I was hooked. I really dig New Love but that took a listen or two. The Way It Was was also an instant favorite. Kevin blew me away on that track and I adore the oldies vibe of it, which also reminded me of Man On The Moon LOL. The more listens I give it, oddly I'm digging Just Like You Like it which since I'm not a country person feels weird but I guess I enjoy it if it's their voices lol. This album is so good.

I kind of want to write a short story to Breathe too, like the chorus has inspired some thoughts.

LMAO!  Well... yes.  Lil Plot Device Dorough!

I was the opposite with New Love and Passionate; I loved New Love on the first listen and wasn't sold on Passionate until the second or third time through.  Now I think I like Passionate better than New Love, but they're both fun songs.  Passionate speaks to my soul as an obsessive fan though LOL.

I'm listening to Just Like You Like It right now, and I like that one as well.  It does have a country vibe, but as long as it's not twangy, I don't mind that.  There really aren't any bad songs on the album.  They're all at least pleasant to listen to.

I know it's probably too early to answer this question accurately, but so far, how does DNA compare to their other albums for you?

I don't think it's quite as good as In a World Like This (which is right up there with Millennium for me), but I do think it's better than both Unbreakable and This Is Us.  I'll have to wait and see how well the new songs hold up over time before I can compare it to their older albums.

I like that idea for a writing challenge!

I did get an idea for Nobody Else (even though if i had to pick a least favorite song on the album it would probably be that one lol) but the more I thought about it, I realized I could probably turn it into a longer story. So im not sure what song I would pick right now.

It seems like No one Else is the least favorite of a few of us. It took me awhile to warm up to “Just Like You Like It” too. I am tending to start listening at Breathe and going down. Not ready for shuffling yet lol

I am calling The Chateau. I see a nice little suspense fic for that one, although doubtful it’ll ever get written.

It’s going to be hard to beat Millennium for me but I’d probably put this one right next to, or slightly ahead of IAWLT only because I still skip Try and One Phone Call lol

Nobody Else isn't bad, but it's pretty forgettable.  I feel the same way about most of the ballads, except Breathe and The Way It Was.  They're pleasant, but nothing spectacular.  Some of them may grow on me more once I memorize the lyrics and can sing along, LOL.

Do it!!!

I don't know when I'll get around to writing mine either.  Maybe once I hit a wall with my other story.

Im a little iffy on 'Just Like You Like It' too. It even more country than 'No Place'. But they all still sound great on it. I like Kevin's voice the most on it.

I think Florida Georgia Line must have had an influence on them!  We know they definitely influenced AJ, LOL.

Does anyone know if OK is the song Andy Grammer wrote for them?  It sounds like it, but I don't have the physical album yet to check the credits.  I can't wait for that to come!

I think they did too. I think the positive response they got from doing that song with them made them realize they could push the boundaries more with their sound, as far as country goes.

I love the variety of genres.  I don't usually like albums where every song sounds the same, and this is definitely not one of those!  There should be something for everybody on this album.

most defiantly. I think they will attract a lot of new fans too with this album. Im sure there will be a lot of people who hear one of their songs and will be surprised to find out that its a Backstreet Boys song lol

We should make a writing challenge for a short story for each of the titles off the album. Once one is taken someone else has to choose a different one, to see what you all come up with it.

Do you think you will make an official post for this challenge?

Andy Grammer wrote Passionate actually!

So I'm completely okay with him giving Nick more songs.

Chateau is getting stuck in my head a LOT now. That song is absolutely a grower and an ear worm. I think Baby, come back... and next thing I know I'm singing the chorus.

Oh really?!  I didn't see that coming at all!  OK totally sounds like it could have been an Andy Grammer song to me.  But Passionate is a better song, so go Andy!

Chateau is definitely catchy!  It's a great pop song and tells a good story.  I'm eager to see how Mare will twist it into something suspenseful and not at all romantic for her challenge story, LOL.  (C'mon, Mare!)

Yeah at the live chat thing in November Nick was talking about it. It was written by Andy and then the producers that do a lot of work for Bruno Mars produced it.

With the lyrics to Passionate I could easily see it as a stalker story LOL. I just got an idea haha.

Passionate definitely sounds like it could be a Bruno song!  I can also totally see it as a stalker story, LOL.  I've been watching "You" on Netflix, and it has that same vibe.  Can't wait to read what you come up with!

What song do you find getting stuck in your head the most from DNA?

For me its Breath. There's just something about that song. I don't know if its cause there's no beat/instruments to distract from the lyrics. But i'll be doing something and realize im singing Breath in head over and over.

I'm all over the place!  New Love, Passionate, Chateau, OK... I'll get like one random line stuck in my head for awhile, and then it'll be something else from a different song.

New Love and The Way It Was come in second after Breath. I get those three stuck in my head the most.

God yes. I'm going through phrases. First two days was Passionate. Then New Love. Yesterday and today Chateau decided to move in. Chateau's the "worst" in that all I need to do is hear the word baby and the whole damn chrous is in my head lmao.

I alternated between having lines from New Love and Passionate in my head all day at work.  Makes sense because those are the ones I've been listening to the most; I always start at Track 4 when I play the album so I can hear them first.

Got to say I love the new album, I think Breathe is my favourite though, I've listened quite a lot  and just love it so much :)  I'm so excited for the tour now!

I'll have to go and listen to those Japan bonus songs now as didn't realise there were any others, not had a chance to watch any of the appearances they've done either, so got a lot of You Tubing to do :)

Who are you the sex police? In my head today

I even had Nobody Else stuck in my head the other day.

Although after watching Rent last weekend I had to buy the original cast soundtrack and blared that on my way to New York yesterday.

My sex ain't got no rules!  Haha.

I bought the crystal clear vinyl album Barnes & Noble was selling, and it came today.  It's so beautiful!!!  I have nothing to play it on, but I'm going to frame it and hang it on the wall of my writing room, where most of my other BSB stuff is.  Records, while not practical, are so cool!  I think it's awesome that they released an album on vinyl.  I've actually started seeing more VHS and cassette tapes being sold in stores recently, too; I guess it's considered hipster and cool now.  Personally, I will never go back to anything you have to rewind, but I love the nostalgia of it.

I forgot that records, like cassettes, have sides, so here's the breakdown:

Side A:
1. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
2. Nobody Else
3. Breathe
4. New Love
5. Passionate
6. Is It Just Me

Side B:
7. Chances
8. No Place
9. Chateau
10. The Way It Was
11. Just Like You Like It
12. OK

Which side is your favorite?

I love the vinyl. The sound is different when you play it which I found to be really really cool. I have my mom's old record player in my bedroom so I was really excited to try it out. As for which side is my favorite...pro bably Side A.

Isn’t it funny how old is new and hip. Just like those Polaroid cameras from back in day.

My favorite would be side A. I’m so bummed I spent all my Barnes and Noble gift cards on actual books! I had no idea about the exclusive vinyl thing.

Yes!  One of my 4th graders has a Polaroid camera, and another one brought in his mom's old Discman and was using it to listen to CDs on the bus LOL.  That brought back memories!!

I was listening to DNA in the shower today via Bluetooth speaker and my phone, and I was thinking about how I used to have to either bring my boombox into the bathroom and plug it in to listen to albums in the shower or take a bath with my headphones plugged into my Discman right by the bathtub and hope I didn't get electrocuted LOL.  Kids today have it so easy with their digital music and tiny wireless devices!

The clear vinyl was only like $27 including tax and shipping!  Not bad for a collector's item.  I pre-ordered mine online last week, but I just saw Hannah post on FB that she found one in the actual store.

I think Side A is my favorite too, for the uptempos and Breathe.

Yeah it wasn't bad at all.

I wish they'd release their previous albums on vinyl honestly. I was the one who got my mom's record collection as the music freak in the family and I've been slowly adding records now that it's trendy again LOL. I'd love to  have theirs in there.

Okay, it's been out for two weeks now... Anyone have any skip songs?  What's your least favorite track?

I don't have skip songs; I genuinely like all of the tracks on this album.  I find Nobody Else, Is It Just Me, and Just Like You Like It a bit boring compared to the other songs, but they're not bad compared to my least favorite tracks on other BSB albums.  DNA is solid!!
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: mare on February 07, 2019, 06:44:56 PM
It’s the same exact thing for me! Nobody Else is probably my least favorite song, followed by Just Like You Like It and Is It Just Me but I don’t skip any of them. I have probably listened to this album more than any of the others as well. Yay boys!!!
Title: Re: DNA

One thing I do love about Is It Just Me in particular is the lyrics.  The rhyming, especially in the verses, is really clever.

I appreciate the maturity of the lyrics in this album.  That is a credit to the songwriters more than the guys, since they didn't write any of this stuff themselves, but there aren't any songs with stupid lyrics!  Lyrics don't usually make or break a song for me; I like a lot of songs with stupid lyrics... but these songs all make sense and are relatable.  They sound like the songs a bunch of married white guys in their thirties and forties should be singing.  No "'cause you're so hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot!" or "Shorty ain't got cable" or "bang, bang, choo-choo train" or "making sweet sexy babies" this time around.
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: Rose on February 08, 2019, 04:33:53 AM
Sweet sexy babies still cracks me up lmao.

So far I can listen to the album from beginning to end without any issue. There's nothing I feel the NEED to skip. But when I do skip, it's usually Nobody Else and Is It Just Me.
Title: Re: DNA
Post by: RokofAges75 on February 08, 2019, 07:02:36 PM
I love that song, but that line just makes me shake my head LOL.

I only skip songs in order to listen to New Love and Passionate one more time before I have to leave the house / get out of the car / go to bed / whatever.  That's usually why Nobody Else gets skipped.
Title: Re: DNA

I'm still loving it and don't feel the need to skip any songs yet, they've done well with this album, best since Unbreakable for me.  Can't wait for the tour to see what they do
