This will also be a question and answer thread although it will remain closed. You can PM me any questions you have about this feature and I will be happy to answer you in this thread.

What is featured story of the month?

It's a story that is chosen to be discussed each month. I used to have a fanfic of the month club where we would pick a story to be discussed each month. It worked like a book club where we would all read along and ask the author questions about plot lines and motivation etc... It was a huge success except that after awhile people stopped being interested, especially once they had their own month. So FFF came to an end.

This is another off shoot to that.

How do you choose what gets featured?

I try to be as fair as possible. Most of the stories featured come as recommendation s from posters. I see the story being discussed all over the place or hear raves about it on the forum. I also asked for recommendation s when the forum was first made and many of the first stories being featured are coming from that list. I do not pick from my own tastes personally. Some of these stories happen to be favorites of mine but for the most part, they are your favorites and not mine.

Do you read all the featured stories?

I try, but like everything else in life, sometimes I just don't have the time or sometimes I just lose interest. Doesn't mean it's a bad story by any stretch of the imagination, just not my thing. I'm pretty good about keeping a dialogue going throughout the month either way.  :)

Do you have to post on the forum to be considered as featured author?

No, but it does help. If I have a choice between two people for a month and one always posts on the forum and discusses things and one doesn't, i'll go with the poster because odds are they will be more active when it comes time to discuss their stories.

I decided to make this a sticky so anyone who had the audacity to think I just picked people I am good friends with for featured authors can actually look at the long list of people on here since I started this.

Remember if you feel that someone should be featured or you should be featured, there is a thread somewhere on this board where you can let us know. You probably have to scroll down a bit to find it, but it's there.

Pretty much the only way you wouldn't be featured is if you only have one story and only about 15 chapters up. To be able to discuss something, there should be enough written to keep a dialogue going for an entire month. Also if all you do is collaborate (Not that there's anything wrong with that) and all of your collaborators have had a month, chances are slim you'd get your own unless you fly solo or collaborate with someone who hasn't been featured.

Eventually people will get more than one turn but there are so many writers on AC it'll be awhile lol

Thanks guys! And don't forget to take the time to go into those threads and tell the authors what you think. I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

I just unlocked this thread so this way if you have any questions you can ask them in here or you can also recommend fics in here. Just try not to turn it into a chat thread. Thanks!

I don't know if you've heard complaints or what, but I can't imagine why anyone would complain about your choices for this.  If you look back over the authors chosen for this in the last two years, basically every regular on this board who writes their own stories has had a featured story.  And I'm sure anyone who hasn't is on your schedule to be featured this year.  I know you have it planned out way in advance, or at least you used to.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread

I am not as planned out as I used to be but yup, I am generally at least three months ahead of myself with picking these out.

No one complains to my face so to speak.... lol but yes, i've heard rumblings here and there. Not a big deal, but I just wanted everyone to know it's not a popularity contest or anything. If enough people talk about it, it'll be featured.

Hey guys, I have one more story in line for featured and that's it, so now's the time to start recommending stories you would like to see featured. if you read the first post in this thread, it lists all the stories that have been featured up to date. There have been a lot and no one has had a second turn.

Things that qualify:

~ The story should be near completion or updated frquently enough to discuss

~ Good Grammar and writing should be important

~ It can be an older story, it doesn't have to be one that is new

~ It doesn't have to be a BSB story. All stories as long as they are posted on AC are eligible

~ It shouldn't be a short story (no one shots)

~ I would prefer the author to be a part of the forum so they can actively participate in the discussions of their work, but if they aren't, that's okay too.

~ If you recommend, I would hope when the time came for this story to be featured, you would participate in the questions and discussions for that month.

So, leave your suggestions in this thread for me.

Thanks!

No, not every regular.

Most of them have. When you consider there are only 10 months of features (Felix best authors take up two) there's only so many. So if you go to the members page and sort by posts you will see the regulars. The majority of those people if they write have been featured or are on the list.

So ok, was just confused. Its only nominees at the Felix awards, not based on regulars on the forum? Either that or its a favorites thing.

No, they mean regulars on the forum.  What Julilly was saying is that the writers who win Best Author and Best New Author at the Felix Awards each get a featured month as part of their title, so that takes up two months of the year.  That only leaves ten spots to be filled with featured stories each year.

Like Julilly said, if you take a look at the members list on the forum and sort by number of posts, you'll see that just about all of the regulars who write and have stories that fit the criteria Mare has posted above have been featured.  If they're newer writers that haven't been featured yet, they might be on the waiting list for this year.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread

Best Author and Best New author each automatically get a month with one of their stories featured. The other 10 months are "up for grabs", if you will. I believe Mare is the main one who selects the featured story...and she selects them based on a lot of factors, actually.

The comment made about "most of the regulars have been featured" was just pointing out that most (but not all) of the people that are regular contributors on the forum, have been featured at one point....and the ones that haven't are probably on the waiting list for a future month.

Selecting a featured story is only partly based on the person's activity on the forum board...and that's only because a featured story thread would be boring if the author wasn't on here. Overall, the stories are selected based on the quality of the story, the creativity of a plot line, how well it's written, if it captures reader interest or...in my personal case, she selected it because she heard various people talking about the story and how much they enjoyed it.

Mare...correct me if I'm wrong, LOL.

And Mariah...does that help you understand it any better?

Title: Re: The Featured story thread

LOL yeah, this thread is actually really old!  My comment about most of the regulars being featured was made two years ago.  Although when I look at the first page of members, sorted by number of posts, it's still true that most of them who write have had a month.  And like you said, Kristal, I know Mare takes into account recommendation s and stories that are getting a lot of buzz from readers... obviously, she wants to choose stories that people are going to want to talk about.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread
Post by: mare on January 09, 2011, 03:32:47 PM
LOL it's so weird that all these old threads are suddenly being posted in again.

If you notice the features story list you will see since Feb of 2007 every month we have featured a new story. I can't believe we've already had 48 stories featured! Go us for never giving up on this! :)

I am the one who picks the Featured story every month and like both Kristal and Julie said, I go by a criteria. There is also a thread where if you want to be considered or have another author you want to bring to my attention, you can post in that thread and viola! It's really as easy as that. lol

Since doing this, I find that the best months come from people who are active on the forum, otherwise the thread just kind of remains stagnant and where's the fun in that? Although I have featured plenty of people who do not post on the forum and will continue to do so on occasion.

I do not pick stories just based on whether or not I like them. In fact, i'll admit that most of the stories on the list I haven't even actually read myself but based on other people's reccomendation s, fan reviews and overall writing ability, they are the perfect fit for a feature.

The Felix thing is new within the last two years. The best author and best new author will get their own month and usually one month is devoted to an oldie (usually during a month where i'm too busy to be Oprah) lol Other than that, I am trying to give everyone a chance.

Hope that answered all your questions and i'm always looking for more recs so go to that thread and rec away.

So I guess new writers who don't post on the forums, with arguably great story lines aren't in the running to be featured? What about someone who's been around for a few years, posts on the forum nearly regularly but doesn't have a lot of recommendation s but you like their stuff anyway? Was just confused on that part really.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread
Post by: mare on January 09, 2011, 07:04:58 PM
If they are that great, my hope is someone will recommend them so we know they are that great. Otherwise, yes they probably wouldn't get featured because their greatness will be unknown to all except the person who thinks it's great but not great enough to share the love. lol

That's how Evergreen got her first month. If you look at the recommend a feature thread, her name showed up all over the place. At the time she rarely if ever posted on the forum but by word of mouth she got a month and now is getting another because she won best new author.

As far as the other question, my goal is to have everyone be featured at one point. As long as your story falls in the guidelines (you can't only co-write, you have to have a story at least almost done and novel length etc...) Then you'll eventually be featured.

It's a forum based feature. Why would Mare choose someone who doesn't post on the forums? If they're interested in being picked it would be in their best interest to start using the forum.

And it's not about Mare liking someone's stuff personally. Like she said, she hasn't even read a large chunk of the stories that have been featured. It's up to other people to say they like it. If you're (or whoever) isn't getting recommended then talk to your (their) readers, it's up to them to suggest it!

Ah so its like a word of mouth thing? Not necessarily a popular writer right? I was just thinking the point of being Nominated and/or winning at the Felix awards would help in that department, yes? Sorry if I worded that weird, just that's what I think you guys are saying.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread
Post by: julilly on January 10, 2011, 05:15:52 AM
Generally if a person gets a bunch or recommendation s that would indicate they are "popular". Like Mare said before, Jen got her first feature because so many people were talking about her story. Not because Mare liked it, she's never read it.

Before recommending people in the other thread though you should take a look at who has been featured already. If all of your previous questions were asking why Steph wasn't featured all you had to do was look at the first post of this thread to see she already had been.

And apart from the best new author and best author winning feature months the Felix Awards don't have a whole lot of bearing on the featured story. Mare only picks the author, they choose the story to be featured.

I kinda agree with the first question. I for example only post in certain sections of this forum but not every day. If I were featured, then I would certainly be checking to make sure I am active in the thread and participating in the discussion of my story. I understand that it's word of mouth but that equals the most popular.

Yeah that's what I'm getting from it. I've been around AC for a while, post pretty much daily since I came back late last year. So its really a "spread the word" thing.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread
Post by: mare on January 10, 2011, 04:27:43 PM
Or you can just go in the suggestions thread and suggest your own work. That's perfectly fine too lol

But yes, word of mouth and recs. A lot of people post on this forum who do not write as well so I don't really pay all that much attention to the posting thing when it comes to recs.

When and if you are featured i'll always PM you an entire month before you are featured so this way you have time to pick a story and know some of the questions i'll be asking you etc... That's where being a forum member is important. It's harder to communicate with you otherwise.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread
Post by: Mariah on January 10, 2011, 04:45:11 PM
Isn't that sort of the same thing as an "Updates" thread? Like letting people aware of your work? It sounds like to me, that its based on recs solely. Which is fine. But then again, not everybody has a fanbase like some writers on that list who've been featured twice.

I don't know, maybe I'm thinking this way because this is how they used to do it at the whimsical archive back in the nsync days. It wasn't based on recs or popularity/reviews but more the webmasters chance of giving everyone (who updates and just writes) a shot at being featured. I thought that's what it means. Didn't know it was like a group appreciation meeting. Nothing wrong with that, just, its almost like you have to wait for someone to catch lighting in a bottle or something. I don't know... lol

Mariah, if you were given a month, which of your stories would be featured?  I'm asking because, looking at your profile, all but one of your stories are incomplete and under twenty chapters.  The only one that's finished is a short story.  It's really easier to discuss stories that are complete, near complete, or long enough to have a lot to talk about, even if they're not that close to being finished.

Also, I want to point out that in the 48 months the Featured Story thing has been going on, 48 different authors have been featured (sometimes two in a month when you look at the collaborations that have been featured).  No one has been featured more than twice, and it was only in the last three months of last year that anyone got a second turn, usually 2 or 3 years after their original turn.  It's not like Mare is just rotating through a few of her favorite authors.  It's also not like she just scrolls through the list of all the writers on AC and picks a name at random.  Everyone who has been featured is either a regular on the forum or has been heavily requested, and many of the featured authors have been both.

If you continue to be active on the forum, and if you continue to update and actually finish some of your stories so that people will be able to discuss them, you will be featured at some point.  That's all it takes.  I'm not sure why it's so difficult to understand...

I guess its difficult because its a new forum and everybody knows everybody here. Honestly, you guys are so different from the nsync crowd. I really don't know what that means. I'm not really saying stuff like this should happen right now. And actually, I have a story already finished, as well as a sequel lined up for it. Crazy Thoughts, just haven't posted all of it.  So thats something, if I had to choose any of my stories since obviously incomplete ones are invalid. And also, I've seen novels that are nearly 20 chapters that are completed. So I don't think a story has to be a full 20 chapters to be considered finished. I don't remember seeing that on the list of requirements. If its finished, its done. Unless theres a sequel. I do continue to update Julie, thank you. Just not as quick as everybody else does.
Title: Re: The Featured story thread

It's not the same thing as the update thread. An update thread is to let people know you have updated.

LOL I honestly don't know how to explain it any better than I have. I mean I think I have covered all of your questions multiple times in this thread alone, including the fact that I want to give everyone a chance to be featured at one point whether they are recomended or not. I'll say it again though lol if you want to be featured, go into the rec thread and mention it. I think that makes sense? I am making sense, right? lol

We can't discuss something that's not posted, and your stories that are under 20 chapters AREN'T finished.  That's my point.  Finish them, post the rest on the site, and then when you're eventually featured, people will have more to talk about.

There ARE other people on the forum and on the site who have more stories, longer stories, more finished stories, more frequently updated stories, and still haven't been featured, simply because their turn hasn't come around yet.  Again, there are only enough months for twelve people to be featured in a year, two of which are taken by the Best Author winners at Felix, and if you haven't noticed, there are quite a few posters here and quite a few authors on the site.  Be patient.  If you want a turn, you'll get a turn eventually.

I guess its difficult because its a new forum and everybody knows everybody here. Honestly, you guys are so different from the nsync crowd. I really don't know what that means. I'm not really saying stuff like this should happen right now. And actually, I have a story already finished, as well as a sequel lined up for it. It's a new forum? The forum has been active since 2006, you've been a member since 2007.

You're allowed to recommend yourself, and if it's important to you then you'll ask your readers to recommend you also. So, and I think this is what Mare was getting at, if what you're asking is for your own stuff to be featured then just go into the recommendation s thread and recommend yourself already.

If you're still confused about how it works; people recommend authors (there are 506 on AC, 48 have been featured thus far), Mare puts those authors on a list, picks one for every month, they pick the story they want to have featured, it's discussed.

LOL what? Mariah take a deep breath and listen to what i'm telling you...

I don't mind answering your questions, but you keep asking the same ones over and over. When that happens, I start to wonder if you are reading what i'm saying or are seriously confused by what i'm saying. That's why I asked if i'm making sense. I sometimes don't make sense, believe it or not. LOL

I just want to make sure you get what i'm trying to say.

And one thing I do want to point out for anyone who is interested in being a featured story, even if a thousand people recommend your stuff, if I go check the story and find a ton of grammatical errors and hardly any editing I will not feature it. I always check before picking. Otherwise, everything is up for grabs. That does include all fandoms too, but just BSB.  :)

The thread is actually called suggestions for future featured stories. I keep calling it the rec thread, but that's the one I mean. lol

Ha, could have done maybe w/out the first line? I am calm. Just had some questions on the subject. I'm going to go back and reread what I wrote. I know exactly what I asked you.

Same here.

Your post seemed like you were flustered just as you read mine as annoyed. It's hard to read someone's thoughts online so I apologize if you weren't flustered. Even though that makes it sound like I wanted you to be flustered or something. lol

Anyway, this thread shouldn't really be so drama filled. You asked questions they were answered. If you have anymore, please feel free to post. Same with anyone who has questions about how this whole thing works.

If you read the entire thread, I think I pretty much cover all the basics but I might have left some stuff out that I haven't thought of. Otherwise go suggest away! :)

Mare, to be honest, I have read the thread. If I didn't, I wouldn't have asked what I asked. I'm sorry if you feel I was being repetitive but I really wasn't. I really didn't understand what you meant even though you did explain it. I'm kind of a curious party, I'm just like that. I like to know stuff. I'm curious to how things came to be. I still consider myself new and am behind on how things are run here. That's why I'm so inquisitive.

I thought you were annoyed because, since I can't hear you, you were laughing and even YOU were repeating yourself saying you didn't know how clear you were supposed to be in one of your responses. Maybe go back reread what I asked since I looked over what you responded. Otherwise a back and forth just won't work.

Mariah, does it really matter? Your questions have been answered by both Mare and myself (I gave you a step by step breakdown of the process on the last page) so unless you have any more it's time to move on. Considering what a small issue this is it's so not worth the arguing over how everything was interpreted.

Do you have the answer to your question? Yes or No?

It's time to recommend more people for featured author. Again, look at the list at the top and if you see someone who you think should be up there but isn't, post them here so I know. You can also mention someone who had a turn a while back and has a few stories you'd like to see featured again.

Just remember they really should post on this forum to actively participate in their thread.

Thanks and recommend away!

:)

I would love for Steph (Carter-Orange) to have a month so we could discuss Save a Prayer or Rewind.  She last had a turn in November 2009, so it's been a couple years.

Also Rose for Remember Me This Way.  Rose hasn't been featured on her own since January 2008, though she and I were featured together for Undead in October 2010.

Mare, you also haven't been featured since 2008.  I'd love to discuss Lurks!  Or any of your other fantastic stories.

How about Ritz, for The Other Side of Nick Carter?  I know it's not finished yet, so maybe later in the year when it's further along?

Everyone else that comes to mind has been featured in the last year or so, so that's all I've got for now.

Awww thanks ZDR :).

I think Mare deserves another month. It's been forever and you're a regular author here too. The only problem is...which story to choose? lol

I would love to see Rose or Mare featured. I don't think I have any stories of my own to suggest...but Mare for sure. I'd love to discuss Whatever the Night or Lurks.
