Title: Alter Egos.
Post by: julilly on February 27, 2008, 02:42:17 PM
I just recently bought a book and on the back it explained that the writer of the book was actually a former pseudonym for a more famous author.

Does anyone here write under two different pen names or maybe write purposefully under a pseudonym? (which obviously you may not want to reveal, but ya lol)

Our nicknames obviously are our alter egos from us in real life, but I still consider Julilly to be *me* so if I wrote as someone else, they would be different from my true identity.

What do you mean by "the writer of the book was actually a former pseudonym for a more famous author"? It confusing. lol

Well, I use "nicksgal" online, but that is me. I've never felt like any part of "nicksgal" is different from me other than the fact that being "nicksgal" doesn't carry the weight of any background information of my life before I was a BSB fan, unless I want people to know that. lol

I guess the only difference between me and "nicksgal" is that people who know me mainly through being "nicksgal" see me as more talkative and open. And people who know me only as Deanna don't really give me a chance to be that person, because they'd rather be dominant themselves. I guess that's it though...

But I'm one of those "what you see is what you get" type people. So it would just be awkward to me if "nicksgal" was this entirely different personna. lol

I never knew that Carolyn Keene (ther writer of all the Nancy Drew books)never really existed. :( when I found that out I almost cried. lol

the only people who know me as mare are the people who are in my fanfic world. Outside of that i'm Marianne. lol Even my best friends call me Marianne, so...maybe I do. Although for my book I went by Marianne. Maybe the next one i'll call myself Chachi.

^ Like Stephen King for example Dee when he first started he called himself Richard something or other richard Bachman I think? I think that's what Julilly means, but now i'm going to call her Maple jellybean.

I understand what a pseudonym is. I just meant what does "the writer of the book was actually a former pseudonym for a more famous author" mean? Does that mean someone else used this person's name? Or this person is going by a different name and is known as someone else? That's what I wanted to know. lol

And ditto to the Nancy Drew author not actually existing. I was absolutely confused by that one. lol And by the fact that like twenty different people actually wrote those books. lol

I think she meant someone like Stephen king using a less famous name to mask who he was. I think, you know we do share a brain but I could be wrong  and lmao I know! Same with the Hardy Boys books. It kind of killed it for me. I am reading this book now about all the women who wrote Nancy and it's just so depressing to me lol

Ah... I think that makes sense. lol

Aw. :( Then don't read it. Maybe you should write Nancy Drew, Mare? She could be a pop music toting crime fighter. lol

This topic makes my head hurt lol. I just know that VC Andrews only wrote like two series of her books and then a ghostwriter continued writing them under her name. But that got ridiculous because the ghostwriter actually wrote more books than she did and then after a while they started sounding all the same.
Title: Re: Alter Egos.

Well, VC Andrews is labled as the originator of the Mary Sue lifestyle, so there you go. lmao

Dean Koontz does that too but it's been years since I worked at a bookstore when I used to know a lot more of these authors. I'm determined that there are really only seven authors in the world and they just keep writing under different pen names.

My other pen name is Guitargirl! :P J/K!!!!!

Yeah, Nora Roberts (i know i'm predictable in my fave author, oh well) has an alter ego who writes the creepiest, goriest futuristic suspense. it's awesome!! JD Robb and the In Death series is intense, but it's amazing how intricately she's created the future world and I devour those books, too.

I bet she just got tired of writing the same old romances lol Her JD Robb books sometimes gave me nightmares in high school

Very true.  That's another reason I like it here (and on my forum too, really) - most of us can laugh at fanfic and at each other and not take offense just because we have different tastes in stories and whatnot.

LMAO so I am not anywhere near the end of this thread yet, but I just found the quote that made my day!  why is it always Julilly that does that? Oh, no, a lot of times its Julie too. You two make me laugh. You guys rock.

ok, i should have known tonja and oreos were involved when this thread turned out to be so long. And even though I'm usually there second in line behind Dee to hijack threads, I think for once I'll bring us back on topic.

alter egos...

I have a real life alter ego. his name is Westly. I don't even know how to begin to explain that one. but yeah, Kelly and Westly; same body, two completely different people.

I can see why authors do it though. Take someone like Danielle Steel. Everyone knows Danielle Steel, but what if one time she wanted to write out of her genre and write some si-fi action thriller. Who in the world would read it? Not her normal following, and yet, not the si-fi reader out there either. Lol like if I ever wanted to leave fluff behind me, (god forbid) I'd probably have to create an alter ego to ditch the stereotype.

lol, that being said, if you ever see Westly start posting, forget I told you about my alter ego...

um....  *ducks* yes...

I'm just stressed as a mutha right now. And at this very moment I'm in LA camped out on my friends living room floor in the nasty process of apartment searching and we are supposed to be moving in like two weeks....  so, um pretty much won't be writing a damn thing through march probably. I feel pretty crappy, but if you wanna take over that part, or let Dee, (since it might have been hers to begin with) I would be ok with that.  (grateful even.) I have already written two parts for this episode, so I hope you all don't hate me too much for the hold up.

:D

That is all I have to put for most of this thread.

As for the original purpose of the thread: I have an alter ego for every part of my life.

Amy Robinson was originally my online alter ego/pen name, but more people call me Amy than they do my real name, so... *shrugs* It's more like a nick name now since people in real life call me Amy as well...

Other than that, the only other major alter ego I can think of that I've had is my stage name (for my music), which no one on the internet knows, and I plan to keep it that way, lol.

I like to think of my universe as three different worlds; internet, real life, and entertainment. ;D

I think of my life a lot the same way. (and yay for someone else being a music person!)

and, another question for everyone, if you were to ever write in real life, would you use a pen name, or would you just use your real name?  I don't know what I would do.

:D I'd kind of HAVE to use a pen name if I were to write a story to be published or whatever. Unless a certain someone were to ask me out... *blushes* I'm writing about the guy I like right now. A whole story that actually happened, lol.

;D Yep, I love music! I play guitar and sing. I'm trying out various other instruments, however. :)
Title: Re: Alter Egos.
Post by: honey on March 01, 2008, 01:09:04 PM
There are a few music people on here. I sing. (big choir nerd) but I don't do it competitively or seriously any more. long long time ago...

I finally learned how to play the guitar this year though. I always wanted to learn and finally bought a guitar and took a class at the local community college. I totally suck at it, but I'm soooo addicted to it. I'm getting a little better finally though and can even play a couple of BSB songs. (very badly)

It makes me wish I hadn't dropped out of college. I was a music major with stars in my eyes. lol I wanted to go to hollywood and be a famous singer once upon a time. So funny, that back then I would have killed for the opportunities I have now and now I'm just content being a stay home mom who might write a book one day... Its funny how life turns out nothing like you expect it sometimes.

I also want to learn electric guitar, bass and piano...  one at a time though. Maybe even drums one day...

I'm in choir at my high schoo! ;D And I'm considering joining my church choir. But I'm already busier than a bee, so I dunno if I'm going to, lol. Maybe after driver's ed...

Oh cool! I absolutely love guitar! (if you don't already know how, you should totally leanr "Climbing the walls." It rocks. ;))

Wow. You and I want to learn the exact same instruments! lol.

Title: Re: Alter Egos.
Post by: honey on March 01, 2008, 01:25:41 PM
yeah, basically I want to be in a band, don't care which instrument I play. but alas... no band... pretty much the only thing I'm active in musically anymore is church stuff. I do occasionally still write songs. And now I can almost figure out how to play along with what I write on the guitar. It's great fun.

Climbing The Walls is actually one of my favorite BSB songs ever and I have the sheet music for the Never Gone album. I've tried to learn it, but the NG chords are all super hard and I'm not very good with complicated bar chords yet. But also I can't figure out the strumming pattern for that song. One day though, I'll get it one day.

I'm trying to learn Unsuspecting Sunday Afternoon right now. But I think the chords that I found posted on line are wrong because it totally doesn't sound right. That one is really pretty though, and fairly easy to play, so if I can figure out the right chords I'll be able to add that one to my very short list of songs I know how to play on the guitar.

Bass is easy. You can totally bull your way through it, if you don't actually know how to play. As long as all the notes you play are in the key of the song, it wouldn't sound bad, lol.

I'm definitely learning drums when I move out of my parents' house. :D

You and I have a lot in common, Kelly! I'm in my church youth group band, lol.

The main strum I use for "CTW" is: down down up down up down down.

Can you play power chords, Kelly? If so, it's really easy to play that song.

*shrugs* Sorry, can't help you with most of the songs on Unbreakable. I only play "Trouble is" on that album as of yet.

Good question! I think I'd actually almost have to use a pen name being a teacher and all, depending on what I choose to write. I actually don't have much interest writing children's books, so if I were to write a novel I think I'd rather have a pen name. Just because as far as content goes I wouldn't have to worry about anything I write coming back to haunt my teaching career. No clue what I'd use though lol Any suggestions?

I love singing it. Its a super fun song to sing. If I could play the guitar and sing it together then I would be pretty freaking awesome.  (ok, not really,I'd still be a big dork, but that will be fun.)

*ditches everyone to go try to learn Trouble Is on the guitar*

:D I love singing that one, too! It's easy to sing along on the chorus while playing on guitar, not so much the verses though, in my opinion. Especially when I have to concentrate hard to hit the lower notes (I sing tenor).
