A final click was heard as Howie gave up and turned off the television. Why couldn’t he get rid of this pain, why was the world hurting him so much, why had he not given up hope yet. Even though he wasn’t ready, even against his better wishes…today he was forced to say goodbye to his wife. A memorial had been held in her honor, although he knew deep down inside that she was still alive….somewhere.

It had been four months since she was taken from him, and he still didn’t want to let go. Four months ago he lost so much, four months ago he had everything he could ever need….

A shrill cry in the quiet night caused him to sigh, their child needed him. Down the hall he heard a door open, “I can get it.”

The man hesitated at the entryway, “Are you sure?”

“Yes Kevin, I can take care of her.”

Kevin watched with sad eyes as his friend slowly wheeled himself down the hallway and to the nursery. “Just let me know if you need anything.” And with that he closed the door.

Turning his wheelchair into the nursery door he made his way to his daughters crib. Pulling down the railings he carefully hoisted her onto his shoulder and began to rub circles on her back. “It’s ok, daddy’s here…daddy’s here.”

As he sat there, trying to get his daughter back to sleep, he couldn’t help but think back to that night…the night that haunted him every night…

*****

*Four months ago*

“This has been so much fun guys!” Jenn said as her, Howie, Nick, and Katrina walked down the dim street. The four of them had gone out on a double date, Jenn’s first outing since she had the baby.

Jenn and Howie had been married for just over a year, the two met when Jenn had dated Kevin. Jenn and Kevin even had a child together, but just never got along enough to actually stick it out with one another. Howie had been in love with Jenn from the moment he had seen her, but didn’t say a thing till her until her and Kevin were finished. Ironically, Kevin had even been the one to walk her down the aisle and give her away to his close friend, he had no hard feelings.

“When Howie told us that you needed a night out, we just knew we needed to be the ones to show you a good time.” Nick said as he placed his hand on his fiancés hip.

Katrina shook her head and moved Nick’s hand back up to her waist, “We’re in public…” She said quietly to him.

Nick shrugged, “And your point is…there’s no one around babe.”

“Nick, just be a gentleman…for once in your life.” Howie said with a laugh as he shivered a bit. Pulling his jacket tighter he turned to his wife. “You ok? Not cold are you?”

Jenn smiled at him, “I’m drunk enough to not feel it.”

“Someone’s gonna get himself some tonight!” Nick said and followed it with a hoot.

Howie ignored the blonde as he lovingly kissed his wife, he just didn’t know it would be their last kiss. He suddenly felt as she was pulled from his grasp, her scream cut thru the night as he was shoved to the ground.

“NOBODY MOVE!!” The big man said as he held a gun to Jenn’s head.

Howie shook as he looked into his wife’s eyes and saw fear, slowly he got up and raised his hands above his head like Nick and Katrina had done.

“P..P…Please don’t hurt us.” Nick said as he too, visibly shook.

Jenn let out a whimper as the man pressed the barrel of the gun harder against her skull. “Empty your pockets…NOW!”

As they all emptied their pockets and the girls handed their purses to the offending men, Howie began to get nervous as he watched the man that held his wife backing away, with her still in his grasp. Without thinking Howie cried out for her and took a step in their direction.

All too fast the sound of gunfire began, echoing off the buildings. Cries were heard from all of them, fear clouded the area. Just as suddenly as they came, they were gone. Silence now filled the cold street, as footsteps dissipated into the night.

****

Howie quietly placed his sleeping child back into her crib as he finished remembering that dreadful night. That night his wife had been taken from him, he hadn’t seen or heard from her since. Also that night one of his best friends was killed, Nick had bleed to death on the street that night, as did his fiancé. And when he woke up, nearly 3 days after the attack, he was told he was paralyzed for life.

Howie reached up and wiped away the few tears that had fallen, he had cried enough in the past months. Slowly he made his way out of the room, and headed to his own. Ready for another sleepless night of thinking of everything that had gone wrong.

****

A few nights later, it was Kevin that was awoken by his crying child. Throwing his covers off of his body, he got off his bed and headed to his son’s room.

He himself, was still haunted by that very same night. The phone call he received from the hospital as he had been reading the children to sleep, the hours upon hours of sitting in that hospital waiting room on news of his friends, having to walk down those dark steps to the morgue to identify the bodies of two people near and dear to him, being told that Howie may never walk again, and being told that Jenn was missing. He may not have been dating her anymore or anything, but he still cared deeply about her.

Opening the door he gazed upon his four year old son crying in his bed. It was something that had happened at least weekly since Jenn had been gone. Sitting down on the small bed, Kevin pulled his son into his grasp. “Shh little man, it’s ok.”

His son let out a sniffle, “I…I want my mommy.”

Kevin let out a sigh as he rubbed circles over his back, “Jake, I’m sorry I can’t bring her back to you. Remember how I told you that she was with the Angels now.”

“They don’t need mommy, I need mommy.” Jake said muffled against his fathers chest.

Kevin was at a loss for words this time as tears lined his eyes. It got harder and harder each time his son cried for his mother. Kevin just decided on rocking his son as his mind wondered off …

Jenn had called him up after nearly 2 months of them being apart. He had never thought that she would ever call him again after their break-up, it had been pretty nasty. Things were thrown, nasty words were said, and hearts were broken. And on this phone call, she decides to tell him she’s pregnant. Kevin couldn’t help but to ask if it was his, to which she promptly hung up on him after a few choice words.

The next month he had spent his time contemplating on if he had done the right thing or not. Finely he realized he needed to find her to apologize. Of course she had slammed the door on his face when he had shown up at her door, he smiled as the thought crossed his mind. She was always so passionate about things. Then after hours and hours of talking it over, Kevin had managed to convince Jenn that he really did believe that she was carrying his child.

Looking down he noticed that his son had fallen back to sleep, laying him down onto his bed he felt sadness wash over him as his son sleepily whispered the word, “Mommy…” Tucking him in and giving him a final kiss on the forehead, Kevin sadly made his way out of the room.

He could still clearly remember the day that Jacob was born. Sitting down on his bed once again, he reached over and picked up one of his favorite pictures. It was of him leaning over the hospital bed, admiring his son as Jenn held him. He couldn’t even remember who had taken the picture, but the day he had come across it in the mass amounts of pictures from that day, he knew it was his favorite.

Tears once again ran down his face as he ran his hand down the picture. It didn’t matter that they were long over, you couldn’t help but love the mother of your child. What saddened him even more was the fact that Jenn’s child with Howie would never remember her mother. She wasn’t even a month old when her mother had vanished from her life.

For nearly a month Kevin took care of the kids while Howie was in the hospital. He quickly made the decision to just move himself into Howie’s place. His son was already having a hard enough time dealing with the fact that his mother and one of his uncles was gone, and the fact that his step-dad was hurt and in the hospital. He knew Howie would need as much help as he could get too when he got home, so he decided it was the best option.

Now still, four months later, Kevin was still there doing all he could. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do the one thing that would make everything better. He couldn’t bring Jenn back, no matter how much he tried.

****

“…Happy Birthday to yooouuuuu…” Cheers were heard thru the TV speakers as the camera zoomed in on Jacob happily blowing out his birthday candles. Kevin couldn’t help but smile at how happy his son looked, it had been one of the best birthdays Kevin could remember.

Then as the candles were blown out, and Jacob bounced happily in his seat, a frown found Kevin’s face as Jenn suddenly came into the frame hugging their son. A tear slid down his cheek when Jacob sweetly placed a kiss on Jenn’s very round stomach, it was just so cute.

Kevin wasn’t too sure what had caused him to watch this video, he just found himself placing it into the DVD player. Actually, he knew why…today was Jenn’s Birthday and this was the last video that they had of her. Howie suddenly came into the frame as he came up behind Jenn and whispered something into her ear as she leaned into his embrace.

Howie hadn’t even said one word today, just coming out of his room when he needed to. Kevin was worried about his friend, but understood what he was going through. A pain rippled thru his heart as Howie backed away from Jenn only to be tackled seconds later by Nick running through the room. Life without Nick had been excruciating, he had been so young.

The sob that escaped his throat couldn’t be helped, maybe he should stop watching. He couldn’t stop, cause now as he zoomed in on his son happily playing with his new toys he remembered something. Since Jenn had been gone, his son hadn’t smiled like that. Could it be possible that his son may never smile quite the same ever again.

However, that day had even more in store for them. Only an hour or so after he had been done with his video taping for the day Jenn had suddenly gone into labor. She hadn’t been due for another 2 weeks, so it had come as a surprise. Then as Howie quickly began to gather Jenn’s bags for the hospital Jacob climbed onto his mothers lap for a quick hug.

“I got my wish Mommy…” Jake whispered happily into her ear.

Jenn looked at him in confusion, “What do you mean honey.” She was trying to control her breathing.

“When I blew out my candles…I wished for my sister to be here.” He was beaming.

Jenn let out a light laugh as she kissed his cheek, “Well next time, make sure you tell Mommy first, ok.”

“But if I tell, it not come true!” He nearly squealed.

Kevin had come to gather their son off of her lap, he could see she was about to have another contraction and he didn’t want Jake to get too worried. “Ok, give you’re Mom one last hug so she can go make your wish come true buddy.”

Howie had whisked her off quickly after that, and Jenn had given birth to their baby girl at 11:58pm. Jacob was so thrilled to be sharing a birthday with his new sister. But now the thought of their birthdays brought sadness to Kevin, cause their mom would never be able to be a part of the celebration.

Kevin paused the video when he heard a cry coming from down the hall, and this time it wasn’t from one of the children…it was Howie. Kevin had been surprised it took Howie this long today to break down. Finally stopping the video, Kevin made his way to comfort his friend.

He found Howie in the baby’s room, trying to calm his daughter as sobs wracked his body. She was now starting to get upset at the state her father was in and began to cry herself. Kevin let out a sigh as he kneeled down next to Howie.

“D, you’re upsetting her. Why don’t you let me take her while you try to calm down.” Kevin said placing a hand on his shoulder.

Howie looked up with red rimmed eyes, “She’s all I have left of her.” His voice sounded lost.

Kevin himself was blinking back tears, “I know, but you’re upsetting her. Just go take a few minutes, ok?” Kevin said has he reached down and took the crying child from his arms.

Howie harshly wiped at his eyes then quickly wheeled himself out of the room, knocking over a lamp. She just cried harder at the sound and it took Kevin nearly ten minutes to get her back off to sleep. After he laid her down in her crib, he went to pick up the broken lamp but chose to leave it for later.

Walking back into the living room, he found Howie watching the same video he had just been watching. “Howie, maybe you shouldn’t…”

“She is so beautiful…” Howie said as he stared at the screen.

Kevin made his way over to the couch and sat down as close to Howie as he could. “Yeah D, she really was.”

“Is Kevin…is…” Howie quickly corrected his friend.

Kevin couldn’t help but sigh, “Howie…”

Howie quickly turned himself so he was facing Kevin as his face turned a little red. “It’s one of the only things still keeping me alive Kevin, don’t take it from me.”

“And you also have your beautiful daughter.” Kevin reminded him.

At this Howie hung his head, “I…I know. I almost did try to kill myself a few weeks ago. Then, right before I did it…she started to cry. And…and I just couldn’t.” Tears once again began pouring down the mans face. “I knew you would take care of her for us, and that would be ok. But…but then I realized how selfish that was of me. To leave her, with out either of her parents…just…just because I couldn’t handle it anymore.”

Kevin blinked his eyes slowly, “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me sooner. I want you to know that, yes, I would have raised her as my own, but that wouldn’t have been right. She needs you Howie, you need to be the one to tell her all about her mother when she gets old enough. Please, please don’t ever think of killing yourself again. Talk to me, I…I don’t think I could stand to lose someone else I love.”

“I…I’m so sorry.” Howie allowed his body to collapse forward into Kevin’s grasp. And as both men cried over their loses, they both prayed that things would fix themselves soon.

The Littrell household hadn’t been fairing as well themselves either. Neither Brian or Sara had been the same since that same tragic night. They had been away on a vacation when the call came from Kevin for them to get home as soon as they could. Brian had known something bad had happened by Kevin’s tear stricken voice.

Brian and Sara had caught the next flight back home, not expecting everything that had happened. Brian had taken Nick’s death the hardest. He denied it at first, praying that it was only a huge joke, and that Nick would come around the corner saying that’s all it was. But then as he walked into the dark room and watched as the coroner removed the sheet that was covering his friend, he knew it wasn’t a joke.

That image haunted Brian every hour of every day. Nick’s blue lips, the trail of blood that had come from the corner of his mouth, and the ashy color his skin held. Brian had grabbed his dead friends hand and cried for nearly an hour before they made him leave. He had cried that his friend shouldn’t be left alone, but they just wouldn’t listen to him.

Sara didn’t break down quite like Brian had, she just went numb. She just knew she needed to stay strong for her husband. Helping Brian go thru the motions leading up to the day of the funeral was the hardest. All he wanted to do is stay at home and cry, but he wanted to help Nick’s family with the arrangements.

The day came when Nick would have his last wishes granted, to be cremated and to have his ashes spread into the ocean. Sara watched from the entrance of the dock as her husband and Nick’s brother Aaron said a few words and released their friend to the sea. Sara waited as they both slowly walked towards her, however, her husband collapsed about halfway back.

Sara sat at the same hospital that they had already lost so much at, waiting for a nurse to come and let her know how her husband was. Aaron had gone to call everyone, while she opted to go and sit in the room with Howie. He had woken up only a few days prior and was totally distraught over everything. He had taken Nick’s death hard, and she was pretty sure he was in denial over his missing wife.

Sara and Jenn had been close, so she was also trying to cope with the same thing. Now, with her husband ailing, her walls quickly came tumbling down. Sara cried along with Howie for around an hour before someone came to let her know of her husbands condition.

Exhaustion, plain and simple. Brian had just pushed himself too hard these past few days and his body couldn’t keep up anymore. Sara couldn’t help but to feel relief when she was told, she was afraid it had been something worse…like his heart.

When Brian had woken up in that cold hospital room surrounded by doctors he knew exactly what it was, he didn’t want her to know. Weakly, he pleaded with the doctor to not let his wife know of the news, to keep it simple as to not overly worry her. He could beat this.

Now, four months later, Sara still didn’t know the truth, and it was killing Brian. Literally.

At the dinner table this evening, Brian suddenly knew he had to tell her. Things had been taking a turn for the worse and she needed to be prepared. Brian set down his fork as he cleared his throat.

Sara lifted her gaze from her plate to Brian, her mind was going everywhere this morning. Jenn’s birthday had been today and she couldn’t bring herself to go over and see how her family was. When she met Brian’s gaze she could see the worry etched in his eyes, “You ok?”

Letting out a sigh, Brian began to tell her everything that he should’ve months ago.

He didn’t expect her to get as mad as she did, he hadn’t expected that at all. He cried out to her as he watched her storm out the front door, but he just couldn’t bring himself to follow her. After nearly an hour of her not coming back he grabbed his jacket and headed out the door himself, he needed to talk to Nick.

***

Brian had spent nearly the whole night out on that very same dock he had collapsed on. He told Nick everything that he had been hiding, and he felt better. The waves seemed to calm as he continued on with his talk, Nick had understood. Returning home as the sun rose, he frowned when he noticed that his wife was still gone.

With a sigh he picked up the phone and dialed his cousins number, she tended to end up there from time to time when she got upset. “Hey Kev.” Brian said as Kevin answered the phone.

Kevin let out a sigh, “Hey Bri, um…it’s not really a good time.” He sounded upset.

“Oh, sorry…is everything ok?” Brian asked in worry.

Kevin let out a bit of a sob, “No, not at all. The…the police called.”

Brian felt himself shake at bit, “They did? Did they find her?”

“There was a lead, they found most of the missing women. I…umm…we need to go and…oh god…they want us to identify her.” Kevin was fully crying at this point.

Brian swallowed back his own tears as he sat down. “Are they sure its her?”

Kevin’s voice held a shake to it, “No, but she matched her description. Howie‘s not taking this very well.”

“Well then there’s hope its not her then.” Brian was trying to be helpful.

“We really need to get down there, I guess I’ll call you when…when we know for sure.”

“No, I’ll meet you there.” Brian let out a sigh as he stood back up and grabbed his keys. “If…if it is her. You’re gonna need me.”

Kevin just nodded at the phone, tears blocking his throat for the moment. “Ok…we…umm…we’ll see you in a bit.”

Brian hoped with all he had that this was not Jenn. He knew that Howie wouldn’t be able to handle this well if it was her.

***

Kevin gave Brian a hug as he saw his cousin enter the small room outside of the hospital morgue. It had been hard to get access to the hospital since word had gotten out that the missing women had been found, press was everywhere. Thirteen women had been found in a basement of a run down house, five of them found dead, and the police felt that Jenn was one of those five.

Brian pulled away, “Did you umm…?”

Kevin quickly shook his head, “Should only be a few more minutes.”

Brian bit his lip as he looked over and saw Howie sitting despondently along the wall, as far away from the door’s to the other room as possible. Looking back at Kevin all he got was a sad shake of Kevin’s head as an answer. “The kids?”

“With a neighbor…I didn’t think they should be here…for…this.” Kevin said as he paced the room a little.

All of their heads quickly turned as the door was opened to reveal a man in a white coat. “Is there a Mr. Dorough here?” The man asked.

Tears quickly found their way down Howie’s face as this man asked for him. “Me…that‘s…me…” He began to slowly roll forward when Kevin suddenly stood in front of him.

“Maybe you shouldn’t do this. I…I will.”

Howie looked up at his friend sadly, “I don’t think I can do this…”

Kevin let out a long sigh, “That’s…that’s why I’m going to.” Tears were quickly finding his eyes as well.

Howie couldn’t find the strength in him to object as he just nodded and backed back to the place he had just been occupying.

Kevin was only a step away from something he was dreading deeply when he felt the hand placed on his shoulder, turning around he was greeted by Brian’s face.

“You shouldn’t have to do this either, let me. You already had to do this with Nick, you shouldn’t have to do it again.” Brian’s voice was thick with emotion.

“Are you sure?” Kevin asked, ready to take his cousins help.

Brian nodded, “Go try to help Howie, I’ll be right back.”

Brian watched as Kevin went and kneeled next to Howie, telling him all he could to give them both hope that this woman was not the mother of their children. Brian took a deep breath as the man reached for the edge of the white sheet. He wasn’t too sure what he would do if it was Jenn, he just hoped it wasn’t. Brian never expected the sight that greeted him as the sheet was pulled off the woman. He felt the breath catch in his throat as his hand went to his chest. He felt his body go numb as the floor came rushing at him as did the realization hit him that this wasn’t Jenn, it was Sara.

***

Howie watched with wide eyes as Kevin lightly pushed open the door in front of him. This was it, the moment he had been waiting for…his wife was behind that door. He gave a tight lipped smile to his friend as he wheeled his way past him and into the room.

The past 24 hours were a blur to him, everything had gone from bad, to worse, to better in such a short amount of time. The news that Jenn may be dead and him having to make his way to identify her, and then Brian never coming out of the morgue. He had died of a massive heart attack when it was revealed that it was his own wife under that sheet. So now it went from possibly losing one person who had been gone for so long already, to losing two people so suddenly.

Kevin took it hard, very hard. The man had been trying to be so strong for him that he wasn’t prepared to hear the news over his cousin. Kevin had crumbled like a piece of paper, he didn’t understand any of this. How had Sara gotten involved, why was she dead, and why did Brian have to die too. It seemed no one knew the answers to this.

Then as everything started to settle down again, and they were about to make their way back home, they were stopped by an officer. Then he told them the best news they had heard in a long time, Jenn was there, and she was alive.

Now Howie was finally seeing her, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. The closer he wheeled himself to the bed, the more tears found their way down his face. But for once, in a long while, these were happy tears. He knew it was her the moment he laid eyes on her. She was thin, very thin, not still carrying any of the baby weight she had still held when he had last saw her. The paleness to her skin was almost deathly, but the steady beep coming from the heart monitor let him know that she was really there, and alive.

Howie couldn’t help but frown though when he reached the side of her bed and realized he couldn’t even reach to kiss her if he wanted to. Locking the wheels to his chair he slowly reached up and grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze. He nearly let out a gasp when she lightly squeezed back and let out a quiet moan. He watched in amazement as Jenn’s eyes blinked open and her head turned towards him. He couldn’t even get one word out, his throat felt closed in.

Jenn’s lips started to move but sound wasn’t heard, just light rasps. She frowned then licked her lips, “Am I dead?”

Howie quickly shook his head, “No, god no. You’re here, you’re safe.” Tears rimmed the edges of his eyes as he watched her blink in confusion.

“But, I…I saw you get…shot. I thought you…were dead.” She said weakly, her voice cracking as tears filled her eyes as well.

Howie slowly pulled her hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly, “I’m ok, I didn’t die that night. I’ve been waiting for you.” A smile tried to creep across his lips as he looked upon her face once again. He felt like he was dreaming, it was all so unbelievable.

Jenn started quietly sobbing at that point, everything was just overwhelming her at the moment. “I…I thought you were gone, and…and that I would never get to see…anyone again. It was so bad Howie….so….bad…”

“Shhh…it’s over now, I’ve got you now.” Howie wanted nothing more than to get up into the bed with her and hold her as she cried.

“Sara…she saved me. Where…where is she?” Jenn suddenly asked sounding as if she just remembered this fact.

Howie was shocked at this, how had Sara been able to save her. “She did?” He couldn’t think of anything else to say.

Jenn bit her lip and slowly nodded, “When I saw her come in there…I…I couldn’t believe it. Then…they were going to…to…and she stopped them…and…I…I really don’t remember what happened after that. Is she here too?”

Howie lowered his head and let out a sigh, “I, I don’t know how to tell you this. She didn’t make it, I’m sorry.”

Jenn cried for a long time after Howie told her the news, and he cried along with her. Finally sobering up a little, Jenn wiped at her face and once again focused on her husband. This time, she actually noticed that he was sitting in a wheelchair, and she frowned.

“Are you…”

Howie realized that she had finally noticed his wheelchair and he grasped her hand even tighter, “It happened that night. I…I…” Tears once again found their way down his face.

Jenn let go of his hand and moved it to his face, “It’s ok, I’m so sorry all this happened. It’s only gonna make us stronger baby.” She gave him a smile and a look of understanding.

Howie nodded and let out a sigh when a knock was heard at the door. Kevin’s head poked thru the opening and Jenn smiled at him.

“Sorry if I’m interrupting, but I have a little boy out here that’s going to break this door down if I don’t let him in right now.”

A smile quickly found its way upon Jenn’s face, “He’s here?”

Kevin nodded to her then was pushed aside as his over eager son shoved his way into the room.

“MOMMMMYYYYY!!!” Jacob yelled as he ran past his father and into the room. Reaching the side of the bed, he tried to climb up the side of the bed to his mother.

“Careful Jake,” Jenn said as he continued to smile brightly at her son, watching as he was lifted up by Howie. She pulled her son tightly into her embrace as he wiggled his way on top of her. Jake was kissing her all over her face and jabbering incoherently to his mother. “Slow down baby, slow down. I missed you too.”

“They said you were with the Angels…I told daddy no, but he didn’t listen.” Jacob now also had tears falling down his face.

Jenn reached up with her thumb and smoothed them away, “Daddy told you what he thought was the truth, that’s all Jake. But Mommy’s here now, Mommy’s here.” Jenn allowed Jake to lay against her chest with his face nuzzled against her neck, looking up she noticed Kevin had totally entered the room. She watched as Howie wheeled his way over to him and couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of sadness fill her as she saw Kevin hand him who she could only presume was their daughter.

Tears nearly choked her as she asked, “Is that…”

Howie simply nodded as he allowed Kevin to push him back to the side of her bed. Jacob moved from his mothers chest to sit down next to her on the bed as his sister was placed into her arms.

“I’ve told her all about you mommy.” Jacob said as he watched his sister squirm around.

Jenn couldn’t take her eyes off of her little girl, she was so much bigger than when she had last seen her. “Hey there Caroline, you…you probably don’t remember me, but…I…I’m your mommy.”

Tears streamed down everyone’s face at the scene, a family finally reunited after so long. Kevin couldn’t help but feel happy as he saw something that he thought was gone, that smile that his son had kept hidden the past four months. Everything could only get better from this moment on.
