Author's Response: Me either. I think I'd freak out. It'd be really hard to stand by. But the situation is a tough one. He really did change a lot between when it happened and the current day version of him. We'll see what goes down soon.

This was a wonderfully emotional chapter! I don't know who Phil is but he maybe my new favorite character. I actually LOL'ed at that part.
Author's Response: Haha Phil's just the random old guy Abbey says hi to in the hallway, that's all. He isn't like any relation. Or is he? ...dundundun... kidding, lol. Glad to bring a bit of humor to an otherwise tissue-fest.

I kinda expected Nick to keep Matty a secret from Lauren for a good while! LOL. I can't wait to see how this all plays out, especially for Abbey ... poor girl has so much to deal with!
Author's Response: haha I think in most stories like this he probably would've kept it a secret for about 90% of the story, but I've got a different kind of twist in store. ;)

You're right, this isn't a traditional Nick story. :) Strangely, Nick eliminating the "best" from his description of his friendship with Brian is what got to me the most. Eagerly awaiting the next update!!
Author's Response: I try not to write traditional stories at all. I find traditional boring. Luckily, my brain works in twisty ways to bring on the crazy. There's a lot of places this story's going to touch before it's over and Brian and Nick's friendship happens to be one of them (which is one of the main reasons I chose VSD to be the condition Matty's got). My heart breaks for Abbey. Having a heart condition is awful and puts so much stress on everyone. As for Nick, I hope he figures out exactly how he feels before making a mistake.
Author's Response: Nick's got a lot of thinking to do before the end of this story... It was a tough choice what to use for Matty's condition. I ended up going with heart condition for reasons yet to be revealed. It's hard no matter what a child is sick with. My nephew was born premature and my entire family spent a couple months hanging around a children's hospital ICU as a result and it's amazing the people you meet in a place like that.

It's sad that Nick feels the way he does. Maybe he's not as ready as he thinks. The situation with Matty and his mom makes me want to cry.
