Author's Response: I actually researched the NYC subway lines to get the correct number of people: at capacity, a normal city train (and capacity is average for 5-8pm on a Tuesday, assumably that's when this is taking place) holds 185-200 people per car, and the average train has 8-10 cars. I assumed there were approximately 182 people per car in an 8 car train for the amount of time he got... which, if anyone is interested... was exactly 5 days, 1 hour and 20 minutes. :)
