1. Christmas Crisis by Ruby Maye

Christmas Crisis by Ruby Maye
Up in the North Pole
December 22, 2008

Santa’s elves were busy preparing for Christmas Eve, which was only two days away. There were elves decorating the giant Christmas tree that stood in the middle of the village. There were elves feeding and tending to the reindeer in the stables.

In Santa’s workshop, there were elves busy making the toys for the good boys and girls. Upstairs in the kitchen, sweet Mrs. Claus was baking her delicious cookies. She just pulled out her snicker doodle cookies from the oven and placed them on a cooling rack. After cooling the cookies, she decorated them with vanilla frosting. She placed a dozen cookies on a platter and placed the platter on a tray next to a tall glass of cold milk.

She carried the tray up to Santa’s bedroom. She entered the room and saw Santa sitting on his desk looking over the good list and the naughty list; he was up to the W’s.

“Good morning, dear!” she greeted merrily.

“Good morning,” greeted Santa. His throat sounded a bit ragged.

Mrs. Claus placed the tray on the table in front of Santa as she hummed a little Christmas tune and opened the curtains.

“What a beautiful day it is today!” she exclaimed with joy at the sight of the village blanketed with snow.

“Very beautiful, dear,” Santa replied not looking up from the list he was reading.

He then let out a furious cough.

Mrs. Claus immediately made her way to her husband.

“Oh, dear, you have a fever!” she exclaimed as she felt Santa’s forehead.

“I think I have the flu,” Santa croaked, putting the lists down. Mrs. Claus looked to Santa with concern. His face was an unusual pale green color.

“How could this have happened?”

“I think I caught it when I went golfing with Jack Frost,” he answered.

“You can’t have the flu now! Christmas is only a few days away!”

“I know, but the toys still need to be delivered to all the good boys and girls,” Santa insisted.

“Of course, dear, but you simply can’t do it in this condition! Don’t you worry about a thing,” she said. “You just leave it to me. I’ll help you find someone to help deliver the toys on Christmas Eve.” Mrs. Claus said.

In the Littrell Household
Atlanta, Georgia

Brian carried Baylee up against the Christmas tree to place the angel at the top.

“There, now our Christmas tree is done!” Brian exclaimed.
Leighanne came in from the kitchen carrying a tray of gingerbread cookies and two glasses of eggnog and smiled at her two boys.

“It looks great!” she said seeing the finished Christmas tree. She placed the tray down on the coffee table.
Brian looked up at her and grinned as Baylee tugged at the hem of his mother’s shirt.

“Mommy, look, I put the angel up on the tree, see? Doesn’t it look pretty?” he asked.

Leighanne ruffled Baylee’s golden curls as she answered, “It looks great, Baby. You and Daddy did a nice job.”

Baylee beamed proudly and proceeded to eat some gingerbread cookies.

Brian approached Leighanne and wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I’m so glad I’m off for the holidays this year. I actually don’t have to work ‘til next year,” Brian joked.

“I’m so glad you’re off too. Me and Baylee get so miserable when you’re gone,” Leighanne said.

They both watched as Baylee continued eating the cookies and admiring the Christmas tree.

Brian looked at the clock and was surprised at how time had flown by. It was already ten o’clock.

“Okay, Baylee, time for bed,” he sang.

“Aww, already?” Baylee whined.

“Yes, sport. That’s enough cookies for tonight.”

“Okay, good night. I love you,” Baylee said, as he dashed upstairs.

“Good night, Sweetheart. I’ll be there to tuck you in soon,” Leighanne called after him.

“Let me clean up down here and you can help Baylee get ready for bed,” Brian suggested.

Leighanne nodded and followed Baylee upstairs.

Brian had finished washing the dishes and was drying his hands when he heard a commotion coming from the living room.

Thinking it was Baylee or Leighanne, he went into the living room to see what the commotion was. He was surprised to see that it was neither one of them. In fact, it was no one he recognized.

A tiny figure with pointy ears in a bright green outfit rolled out from the chimney and was now standing in the living room. The tiny figure, oblivious to Brian’s presence, dusted itself off and replaced the décor he knocked over in the living room. If Brian didn’t know any better, he would say it was an elf. But elves aren’t real, are they? The creature turned around and saw Brian staring at him.

“Don’t worry, I get that look all the time,” the creature said. Brian jumped in surprised.

“You…can…talk? What…who… are you?” Brian stammered. Brian looked at the strange creature in front of him. The elf reminded Brian of something from the Wizard of Oz or some Disney movie.

“The name is Winks. I’m an elf and I work for Santa,” the creature answered, handing Brian a business card.
Brian raised his eyebrows as he took it from Winks. He read the card:

Winks The Elf
Santa’s Little Helper
North Pole

“Yes, that Santa. The Santa. Santa Claus. Old St. Nick. Kris Kringle…”

“Okay, I know who Santa is.” Brian stopped the elf from continuing. “What are you doing here?”

“Santa is down with a bug. It’s what you people call the flu,” Winks explained, “So, the Misses sent me down here to look for someone who can help deliver the toys to the children on Christmas Eve. And that’s when I came upon your doorstep…so to speak.”

“Wait, so you’re telling me that Santa is out sick?” Brian asked, as Winks nodded. “And that he needs someone to help him deliver the toys on Christmas Eve?” Winks nodded again.

“And you think that I qualify for the job?” Brian asked, as Winks nodded once again.

“Why me?” Brian couldn’t help but ask.

“Well, you were always on Santa’s good list. Every year he would always see your name listed along with the good boys and girls. Even as an adult, you’re still good and most importantly, you never forgot the spirit of Christmas. You’ve always believed in him, that’s why he’s chosen you.”

Brian was at a loss for words at what he had just heard, but then he asked, “But…what about my family?”

“Oh no, it’s not a forever deal,” Winks assured him. “It’s only for one night. It’s only until the Big Guy gets better. You’ll be back by Christmas morning.”

“Oh, alright. So, when do I start?” Brian asked.
Winks grinned. “Right now.”

He led Brian out the front door. Brian stood in the front yard as he looked up at the roof of his house and saw a sleigh and a reindeer.

Winks whistled and the reindeer immediately took off the roof and landed in the driveway.

“Whoa, what a way to travel!” Brian said in awe of the sleigh and reindeer in his driveway.

“I’ll say,” agreed Winks. “Hop on.”

“Wait, I forgot to grab a jacket. I’ll be back.” Winks waited in the sleigh as Brian went back in the house to grab a jacket and wrote a quick note to Leighanne.

Brian and Winks rode on the sleigh and got to the North Pole in a matter of hours. Brian was surprised at how fast the sleigh traveled.

The sleigh landed in the middle of the square where all the elves gathered around to see the “new” Santa.

Mrs. Claus came out of the workshop dressed in a candy cane red coat and galoshes. Her snow white hair was up in a bun on top of her head. Her square spectacle lay on the bridge of her nose. She also wore the biggest smile.

“Hello and welcome to the North Pole. I’m Mrs. Claus,” she greeted.

“Hello, I’m Brian Littrell. I’m the new Santa.”

Mrs. Claus gave a jolly laugh. “Well, we’ve got a lot of work to do. We mustn’t waste any time. Come on.”

Brian went up to see Santa in his bedroom. Brian had never seen him in his life and he finally did. Santa looked miserable and yet happy to see Brian.

“Thank you for your help, Brian. It is your kindness and pureness of heart that I chose you to help me.” Santa still didn’t sound very well.

“Well, I feel honored, sir.” Brian replied. “And don’t worry I won’t let you down.”

“I know you will do well,” Santa said. “And for doing this favor for me, I give you a gift.” Santa handed Brian a tiny star ornament from his neck.

“This star ornament is not just for decoration. It contains some of my magic. All you have to do is wish it and it will come true.”

“Thank you, Santa,” Brian said, putting the ornament around his neck. “Merry Christmas and I hope you feel better soon.”

“Merry Christmas, Brian.”

After meeting with Santa Claus, Brian was given a tour of the workshop and the village before meeting Winks at the reindeer stables to meet with the reindeer.

“The first thing you need to do in order to be Santa is to learn how drive the sleigh and control the reindeer. There are eight of them and you will need to know their names. You have to call them in the right order to make them go.” Winks pointed at each reindeer in the stalls as he named them:

“They are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.”

“All I have to remember is the ‘Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer’ song,” Brian said then he realized there was a reindeer missing.

“Wait, where’s Rudolph?”

Winks chuckled at Brian’s question. “Santa actually doesn’t have a Rudolph. Ever since that ‘Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer’ song was created, everyone assumed he was real. Funny isn’t it?”

Brian couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.

After getting acquainted with the reindeer, Brian was ready to transform into Santa.

Mrs. Claus sewed Brian a Santa suit to fit him and even made him a beard to go along with the suit.
Brian stood in front of the full length mirror to see how he looked in his Santa suit. Mrs. Claus stood behind him and beamed.

“You look just like St. Nick!” she said merrily.

Brian turned from side to side and examined himself in the mirror.

“Thank you, Mrs. Claus. Baylee is going to be so surprised!”

“Oh, but you can’t tell anyone you’re Santa just yet. Now, the reindeer and the sack of toys are all ready to go. Winks is waiting for you at the ramp.”

“Okay, thanks again, Mrs. Claus. And I wish Santa a speedy recovery,” Brian said.

“Thank you too. Merry Christmas!”

Brian waved at Mrs. Claus.

Winks and all of the other elves were waiting for him by the sleigh and the reindeer. Brian climbed into the sleigh and grabbed hold of the reins.

“You think you can manage tonight?” Winks asked.

“I think I can manage,” Brian replied. Winks gave him a short salute which Brian returned.

“Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen. On Comet, on Cupid, On Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away, dash away, dash away all!” Brian called. The reindeer and the sleigh took off and hovered above the ground. The elves cheered and waved at Santa Brian as he waved goodbye.

Santa Brian traveled around the world delivering toys to the good children. He went to Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, Africa and North America. Santa Brian still couldn’t believe he had traveled the world in less than a day. If only he and his friends could travel like this on their world tour.

Santa Brian stopped at one last house—his own. He made his way down the chimney and was a little relieved to see that Leighanne and Baylee were all asleep. He was piling presents under their Christmas tree when he heard a shuffling of feet behind him. He turned around and faced Leighanne, who was up for a drink of water. She was dressed in a snow white nightgown.

She gasped when she saw Santa Brian. “Who are you!” she cried in alarm, not recognizing who it was.

“Baby, it’s me. It’s Brian.” Brian took off his beard and revealed himself.

“Brian?” she repeated and took a step closer. She finally recognized him.

“Where have you been? Why did you just leave like that? I was so worried!” Leighanne cried in frustration.

Brian held her in his arms. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t tell anyone where I was. I… had to help someone.”

Leighanne looked up at him in confusion.

“Who did you have to help at a time like this?” she asked.
Brian stood back to let her see him in his Santa suit.

“Isn’t it obvious?”

Leighanne looked at his Santa suit. “Brian, stop playing around.”

“I’m not playing around. Annie, Santa needed my help. He’s out sick so he needed me to help him deliver the toys to all the kids.”

“What? Brian, I don’t understand.”

Brian sighed but remembered the star ornament. “Watch this,” he said then looked up at the ceiling above them.
Leighanne looked at him in confusion again then followed his gaze. Right before her eyes, she saw mistletoe growing from the ceiling, growing until it bloomed. She looked into Brian’s eyes.

Brian leaned forward and kissed Leighanne under the mistletoe.

At that moment, Little Baylee, who had snuck out of bed hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa leaving presents by the tree, sat on the stairs peeking through the banister. He was surprised to see his mom kissing Santa Claus under the mistletoe.

Brian and Leighanne finally parted unaware that their son is watching from the stairs.

“I have to go,” Brian said to Leighanne. “I still have a few houses to visit and then I have to return the sleigh and reindeer to the North Pole. I’ll be back tomorrow morning,” Brian replied. “Merry Christmas. I love you.” He gave her one final kiss before disappearing into the chimney. Leighanne and Baylee watched as Santa Brian took off on the sleigh pulled by reindeer. Then they heard a deep, “Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!”

The next morning, Leighanne and Baylee were awoken by a noise downstairs. Leighanne got out of bed and got Baylee as they made their way downstairs. They were surprised to see Brian setting up the gifts.

“Daddy!” Baylee shouted as he ran to hug his dad.

“Look at what Santa brought!” he said with a grin and winked at Leighanne.

“Oh wow, presents!” Baylee exclaimed.

Brian watched as Baylee and Leighanne began unwrapping their presents.

“Honey, you have a card here addressed to you.” Leighanne held up a shiny red envelope. “But there’s no return address.”

Brian took the envelope from Leighanne and opened it. He took out a card with the picture of Mrs. Claus and Santa sitting in the sleigh with Winks and the other elves around it.

Dear Brian,
Merry Christmas! Thank you for your help this year. We couldn’t have done it without you. You have made the children in the world very happy. I wish you and your wonderful family well and a happy new year. Love, The Clauses.

“Who’s it from?” asked Baylee.

“It’s from someone special,” Brian replied.

Brian realized the mistletoe was still on the ceiling and was hanging right under Leighanne. He stood up and walked over to her. He leaned down and kissed Leighanne under the mistletoe.

Seeing this, Baylee broke into a rendition of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.”

Brian and Leighanne laughed and joined Baylee in the singing.

THE END.
