Chapter Thirty Six

I woke up the next morning with a horrible headache. Kay was still sprawled out, fast asleep. I crawled out of bed. I tried to be as quiet as possible.

Aunt LeighLeigh and I were on a mission. It was Kay's birthday and we had a lot of decorating to do.

After all, my bestie deserved an amazing party.

I got dressed in some old jeans and a t-shirt. I still couldn't shake the events of the night before. Kay had stabbed someone, albeit for a just cause.

I just didn't know if I would have been that brave.

"Morning Brooke," Leighanne said with a smile. "You ready to go?"

Uncle Bri was sitting on the kitchen counter. "What should I tell Kay when she wakes up?"

Leighanne looked thoughtful. "Tell Kay we've gone to do something for the wedding."

I knew Kay would believe that...not that she would like it.

"How long will you be?"

"We should be done by noon."

"And the parties at six?"

We nodded. He gave us a thumbs up.

"Go for it girls."

Leighanne and I walked out to the car. She handed me her phone.

"Can you text Michael and see if he's there yet?"

I scrolled through the screens until I pulled up the party planner's information. I sent off a text message.

Kay was going to flip when she saw everything. She was going to eat her words for complaining about everyone forgetting about her birthday.

It was going to be a night fit for a princess.

------------------------------

"So the DJ's lined up, right?" Leighanne asked as we made our way out of the venue. I nodded.

"Yup, he's got his instructions and Michael will meet him at the side door at five to help bring in the equipment and get set up," I said. Leighanne held up her hand and we high fived. I settled back with a smile.

I didn't know how Aunt LeighLeigh did it. Not only was she planning the wedding, but her and I had been working on Kay's birthday for the past month.

"Do we need to pick up Noah?" she asked.

I shook my head. "Nope. Aunt Angel said she's going to rent a car. She's taking Noah and Logan somewhere this afternoon before the party."

Once NoNo had found out that I was helping plan Kay's party, he insisted on getting an invitation. Even though he was staying with Angel while mom and dad were away, he had managed to talk her into flying up. Angel had a soft spot for all of her nieces and nephews.

"I wish Kay would go out with your brother at least once," Leighanne said.

"He's not her type," I said.

"What is her type?"

I bit my lip. This was awkward. If I told Aunt LeighLeigh Kay's real type she would probably run right off the road. And if I lied...

Ugh. I hated to lie.

"I don't know. I don't think she even knows," I said. In a way, I thought that was probably true.

"Well, I was like her at that age," Leighanne said. "Actually, I was like that until I met Brian."

I smiled.

"I can't imagine Uncle Bri without you," I said. Leighanne laughed.

"Well, sometimes the stars align just right."

Leighanne pulled into the driveway. We got out. Uncle Bri was sitting in the living room plucking at his guitar.

"Where's Kay?" I asked.

"Out by the pool," he said.

I headed upstairs and changed into my bikini. I grabbed a towel and went back down and out the side doors to the pool.

Kay slid her sunglasses down her nose.

"Hey Kay."

"Did you have fun playing wedding planner?" she asked. I thought I detected a note of jealousy.

"Oh, it wasn't that bad. Have you been awake long?"

Kay shrugged. "A couple hours."

I stretched out beside her. She looked at me and sighed dramatically.

"What's wrong?"

"I would kill to have your long legs," she said.

I shifted in the chair. "Kay, you're beautiful just the way you are."

She pushed her glasses back up.

"I don't know." she paused. "I think I might get some plastic surgery."

She was so random. We had just gone from her stabbing someone to her thinking about chopping at her body.

"Why?"

"I don't know. Hey, dad didn't forget my birthday."

I tried not to grin. "Oh really?"

"Yeah. We had breakfast together. It was kind of nice."

I wiggled my toes. The sun felt great.

I figured that a few hours by the pool was an awesome way to kill an afternoon.

Now we just had to figure out how to get Kay dressed up and out of the house without ruining the surprise.

That was going to be tricky.

-----------------------------

"This is bullshit," Kay hissed.

"It's not that bad."

Aunt LeighLeigh had decided to tell Kay that we were going to the opera with Baylee and Claudia.

Kay hated the opera. Truthfully, I did too.

"It's my fuckin' birthday! I don't want to see some fat lady trying to sing from her nonexistant diaphragm!"

"Your dad said we'd go out for cake and ice cream afterward," I said. Kay gave me a look.

Even though she was complaining, she looked great. She had on a dark brown dress accentuated with gold jewelry. Her hair was curled up and piled up on her head. Because I was now anti-red, I had opted for a white sundress.

"KAY! BROOKE!" Uncle Bri called.

"COMING!" Kay said. She grabbed her purse.

"I can only hope there's a hot usher," she said.

"You seriously wouldn't do anything after last night," I said.

"The world keeps turning Brooke. The main thing was that he didn't touch you," she said. She picked up a bottle of perfume and applied just a dab on her wrists and neck.

I bit my tongue. I hated the way Kay cheapened herself, but tonight wasn't the night to bring that up. Tonight was her birthday. I just wanted to see the look on her face and her big bright smile. We were headed out for an evening of music, but what the DJ was spinning was far from opera.

"Let's get this over with," Kay mumbled.

I followed her down the stairs. Bri offered his arm to Kay. She hesitated for a moment and then took it with a pretty smile.

I caught Aunt LeighLeigh's eye and she winked.

The celebration had begun.
