Chapter Thirty Nine

"The set looks amazing!"

If I had to choose one of my favorite moments of a tour, I think it would be seeing the whole thing set up for the very first concert. There's something so new and rewarding about the experience. The love wears towards the middle of the tour, but it comes back at the end when you see it torn down for good on the very last night.

"You've got a sold out show BooBoo," dad told me. "I think we are going to have to think about bigger venues."

I beamed. I loved looking at my dad's pictures from when he played packed, sold-out stadiums. That was my goal. The day I could play a place like that was the day I would know I had made it.

"Brooklyn Nichole!"

I jumped. Mom didn't use my middle name often, but when she did...

"Yeah?"

Mom held up one of the outfits I had approved. I bit the inside of my cheek.

"Nick, look at this."

"What is it?"

"It's her outfit for the last number."

Dad snorted. "No, it's not. I'll go out and buy a snowsuit right now."

My eyes widened. "Dad!"

My last number was Chaotic. I had taken the outfit I had worn for the video. I thought it was a good tie-in.

"I wore it for the video," I pointed out.

"Yes, but that was a controlled environment on a closed set. There's no way you're getting on stage in this thing on a windy day," mom explained.

I sighed. "Fine. Let me go talk to wardrobe."

Mom was on my heels. Landon ran past her.

"Landon where are you going?"

"I gotsta show daddy something!" he said. Something squeaked in his hand. Mom and I looked at each other.

"I'll let your dad handle it," she said lightly.

A half hour later I had a very sparkly, very safe outfit to wear for the last song. I pulled my hair back into a sloppy ponytail. I always felt a little like Cinderella. I spent most of the day running around in jogging shorts and a t-shirt. By the time I went on stage, I was transformed into a diva.

As we were ready to leave the room, Noah swung by the door. He skidded to a stop and peered in.

"Hey BooBoo, guess who's here?" he asked. He held up his phone. Wind Beneath My Wings started playing. I would have smacked him, but I didn't because I was distracted by the realization that the song meant Trevor had arrived.

"Trevor's here?" I asked. Noah nodded. I glanced at mom.

"Go ahead, I'll get your things organized," she said. I headed to the door and stopped.

In all the excitement, I had completely forgotten to ask mom and dad if Trevor could come with us to the wedding.

"Hey mom, I kind of invited Trevor to Baylee's wedding," I said. The corners of mom's mouth twitched.

"Oh?"

"Is that okay?"

She laughed. "Did you forget you're supposed to ask us first?"

I had the decency to blush. "I'm sorry."

Mom hung up one of my shirts.

"It's fine. I'll talk to your dad."

I beamed. "Thanks!"

With that, I headed down the hall back to the stage. Trevor was sitting beside Landon.

"Daddy says I can't show mommy," Landon whispered.

"What do you have booger?"

They both jumped. Trevor broke into a grin.

"Hey Brooke."

I smiled. "Hey."

"I's gots a sneeky snakey," Landon said.

"It's a garter snake," Trevor explained.

"Mom's going to freak out," I warned.

"Shhh," Landon said.

"C'mere Lan!" dad called. Landon scrambled up and ran over. I thought I saw my dad with a jar.

The animal lover had come to the rescue.

I took Landon's spot next to Trevor. He took my hand and kissed my cheek.

"How's it going?" he asked.

"Great. I can't wait for tonight," I said breathlessly. I didn't know if the breathlessness was from the excitement of the tour or from the kiss on the cheek. Maybe, it was both.

"You've got an awesome setup."

"Why, thank you," I said. I kicked my legs out in front of me.

"Want to take a ride around the place?" I asked. He hopped off the stage and held out his hands.

"Sure."

-------------------------------

"Have you ever driven a golf cart before?" Trevor asked.

"How hard could it be?" I asked.

I pressed on the accelerator and the thing shot forward. I slammed on the brakes and we both lurched forward. Trevor laughed.

"Do you drive a car this way?" he teased.

"Shut up," I said. I stuck out my tongue.

It took several more tries before I got the cart at a speed that wouldn't cause people to fly out of our way.

"Are you ready for your tour?" I asked.

"Not really. But I am looking forward to being your date for that wedding," Trevor said. I smiled.

"Me too."

For the next couple hours we toured all the little nooks and crannies of the venue. We played a game of basketball in which I wiped the floor with him. By the time we got back, it was getting close to my VIP time.

"I've got to get ready," I apologized as we walked backstage. "But help yourself to some of the food."

"No problem," Trevor said.

Noah was already grazing at the buffet. Trevor grabbed a plate and they started talking.

I prayed to God that NoNo wouldn't embarrass me.

I headed into my dressing room and took a shower. As I was changing into a pair of jeans and a tank for the VIP, mom walked in.

"I just heard from the record label," she said. "You know how they were supposed to do a plaque ceremony for Chaotic hitting number one last night?"

I nodded. The big shots had called at the last moment to cancel. Mom had spent an hour trying to get Landon to wear a tie. The minute we told him he didn't have to go, the tie had been tossed in the air. Much to Landon's absolute delight, the tie had landed with a loud plop in the fish tank.

"They're going to do the ceremony onstage tonight before you sing it," mom said.

"In front of everyone?" I asked. Mom smiled.

"In front of everyone."

It was bad enough that Trevor was going to be watching. Now I knew that the big shots were going to be in the audience. And I was probably going to have to make a little speech when I accepted the plaque. I could sing in front of a gigantic audience, but speak? Ha.

This was going to be interesting.
