AJ looked down into Brian’s eyes at that exact moment. Still breathing raggedly, Brian stared back. His chin quivered. Why hadn’t the gun gone off?

Looking away from his companion, AJ took a deep breath, much like the one Brian had taken two seconds ago. “Brian?” he mumbled.

Brian’s gaze fixed on AJ like they were pleading for an answer. “What happened, AJ?” he squeaked out. “Why didn’t it go off? Why? It was supposed to go off.”

“It did.”

Brian shook his head. “No, no, no. I would be dead if it did. Why didn’t it go off? Why?” Brian’s voice was shaking.

AJ faced Brian once again. “It did go off.”

“NO!” Brian shouted. “IT DIDN’T!”

“Yes,” AJ calmly replied, “it did, Brian. Check the barrel. The only reason you are not dead is because the gun is not loaded.”

Brian opened up the holster and noticed that the bullets were gone. Who had taken them out? He was the only person who knew about the gun in the first place. “Where did the bullets go?”

AJ grasped Brian’s shoulders and pulled him onto the bed. “Brian,” he began, his voice gaining a little more confidence. “I have a story to tell you as well.”
