Author's Chapter Notes:
I'm kind of having a writer's block with my other stories. I saw a picture of Nick on not-like-you.com and a fan's comment, and it kind of inspired this little short story. However, as I was writing it, I thought of it becoming a chapter story. We'll see what the reviews are like. So, if you like it, send reviews & tell me. Thanks!
Sarah McAdams bit her bottom lip to try and hide the smile that formed there as he kissed her forehead and rolled over to the side. She laid there and tried to catch her breath as he drifted off to sleep. She snuggled up to his backside and fell into a sleep full of amazing dreams. Maybe he had changed. Maybe he wouldn’t be like he was before.

Well a kiss might be just a kiss to you
But baby it meant something to me.
And a night to remember might be
Just a Monday in September.
Baby, it meant something to me.

“Sarah, I just don’t want you to get hurt again. Especially by him,” Maggie Anderson sighed over the phone as she continued to talk to her best friend. Nick Carter had, supposedly, walked back into her life…again. He was in it before and left her stranded.

“I’m sure he had plans this morning,” Sarah defended him. “He’s a busy person, Maggie. He probably had an interview or something. I’m sure he’ll call later.”

“You said that last time,” Maggie muttered.

“Can’t you just be happy for me? I haven’t felt this great in years,” Sarah sighed breathlessly. “Maybe he wants to be apart of our lives again.” Sarah smiled as she watched the TV screen where Nick was talking about his new show on E!

“I swear, Sarah. If he leaves again…I don’t know what I’ll do. Does Alexa know he’s back?” Maggie questioned referring to Sarah and Nick’s three-year-old daughter, Alexa. Sarah shook her head ‘no’.

“No, he didn’t have time to see her last night,” Sarah sighed in disbelief. She still couldn’t believe he had come back. He had come back to her. The last time she saw him, he was so angry with her. He couldn’t believe she had gotten pregnant, so he left.

“Sarah, this doesn’t sound good,” Maggie sighed. “Why don’t you try calling Alex? Or even Brian? Ask them what’s going on.”

“I trust him,” Sarah smiled just thinking about the man she had made him into.

“Why? You don’t have any reason to!” Maggie exclaimed out of anger. “I see what he’s doing, Sarah! He wanted sex so he came to you. He knew he could get it from you.”

“You don’t know him like I do, Maggie,” Sarah muttered. “Listen, I have to go. I think I’m going to take Alexa to the concert tonight.”

“Please don’t get hurt,” Maggie whispered as she sighed in defeat. “Call me when you get home and let me know you’re okay, alright?”

“Yes, mom,” Sarah rolled her eyes.

“Hey, it’s not my fault you’re my best friend and I’m incredibly worried about you right now,” Maggie sighed again. Sarah smiled.

“I know. I’ll be fine. I’ll call you tonight,” she said and they both hung up. Sarah couldn’t stop smiling just thinking about seeing Nick and finally introducing him to his daughter. Maybe they could be a family after all.

I know you try
It’s gotta come from the heart
I know I believe it’s the hardest part of love.

“S-Sarah?” AJ McLean stuttered as he walked into the lounge and saw her sitting there with a little girl on her lap.

“Alex!” She exclaimed and rushed over to the door to hug him. “I’m so glad to see you!”

“Same here,” he frowned, somewhat stunned. He smiled down at the little blonde by her feet. “Honey, what are you doing here?”

“Well,” Sarah smiled, excited just to explain her story to her long time friend. “Last night I was at work and I saw Nick, he came in to buy a coffee. Well, I started talking to him a little bit again and he came over…and…well, one thing led to the next…” She trailed off with a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

“Honey,” AJ sighed and rubbed his forehead. Her smile fell and he immediately tried to fix his disappointment. “Don’t get me wrong, I wish Nick could grow up and be mature about everything, but he won’t. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“You and everyone else,” Sarah muttered and rolled her eyes. “I think he’s changed, AJ!”

“Sweetie, he’s changed. But he hasn’t changed that much,” AJ smiled down at the little girl that was staring at him curiously. Trying to change the subject, he knelt down to her level. “Hi, there. You must be that beautiful little girl I’ve seen so many pictures of from your mommy.”

“I named her after you, ya know,” Sarah laughed softly. “Alexa, honey? This is Alex.”

“Hi,” Alexa whispered shyly.

“Hi,” AJ smiled brightly. He loved little kids. “You wanna know something? A friend of mine, Brian, has a son your age. His name’s Baylee. You wanna come meet him?” Alexa looked up at Sarah and Sarah gave an encouraging nod. This would give her time to find Nick and talk with him. Alexa nodded back at AJ and put her little hand in his.

Sarah sat back in a chair and couldn’t help but let herself fall into panic. What if Alex was right? What if Nick wasn’t any different than before? What if Maggie was right when she said he was using her for sex last night? Sarah wasn’t as strong as she thought she was. One more heartbreak from Nick could easily send her over the edge.

And cause you can remember
The 22nd day in November
Baby you mean something to me.

Sarah noticed his dressing room and decided to walk in. He was probably in deep thought before the performance. As she entered, she heard giggling and moaning. “Nicky, stop!” Someone giggled.

“Nick?” Sarah frowned as two bodies on the couch came into full view. She watched as Nick struggled to pull his pants up and zip up the zipper. She couldn’t comprehend the situation. Not fully, anyway. She knew exactly what he was doing, but why he was doing it was a mystery to her.

“What are you doing here?” He spat out angrily. Why was he angry with her?

“I-I thought I’d come and see you. I brought Alexa. I want you to finally meet your daughter,” she tried not to let any of her tears fall. He had managed to do it again. She had allowed him to break her heart. “I thought that after last night we could finally be a family.”

“You have a kid?” The girl on the couch spat as if it tasted sour to even say it. Nick sighed out of frustration as she got up to leave.

“Emily! Wait,” he went to chase after her. It was no use, she was gone. Sarah’s bottom lip quivered as she turned to leave. “Thanks a lot.” He muttered as he brushed past her back into the dressing room.

“Thanks a lot?” She repeated. Now she was just as angry as she was hurt. “I waited for you to come back. I’ve been waiting for three years.”

“Why?” Nick frowned and threw his arms up in the air. “I’m not the man you want me to be, Sarah!” He yelled at her as he lowered his face to be level with hers. “I’m not now, nor will I ever be!”

“Sorry, I must have been mistaken. For some reason after last night I thought you had matured a little,” Sarah fumbled with her purse and tried to cause some kind of a distraction. “You even had the nerve to tell me you love me.”

“It was in the moment,” he shrugged like it was no big deal. Sarah couldn’t help but let her hand fly across his face.

“You bastard,” she muttered as more tears cascaded down her cheeks.

“I don’t want commitment, Sarah,” he tried to explain. “I’m not that kind of person.”

“Then you probably shouldn’t have gotten me pregnant. If you didn’t want commitment, that probably wasn’t the best idea,” Sarah said sarcastically as she turned around to walk out of the lounge.

“It takes two to tango,” Nick muttered as she slammed the door in his face.

Sarah completely forgot what she was doing. She was too shaken up to even think clearly as she marched out of the venue and into the parking lot to get in her car. It wasn’t until she saw the car seat in the backseat that she realized she forgot something, or rather, someone. “Shit, Alexa.” She muttered and spun around just as headlights came into view and something knocked her onto the pavement.

And a kiss might be just a kiss to you
But maybe it meant something to me.
Or maybe it meant nothing
Baby it meant something to me.

AJ held Alexa close to him as the paramedics approached. All you could see in the night air was the flashing ambulance lights. The paramedic shook his head. “I’m sorry. She was already gone when we got here. We tried everything.”

AJ couldn’t help his tears. He loved Sarah like a sister. But he felt even worse for the sleeping angel in his arms.

The End
