I've been a BSB fan since 1997 and been writing fanfic off and on since 1999. Started out with my own (ultra teenybopper) website, moved on to FanFiction.net, and obviously now AC is where I currently resign ;)

Nick tends to make an appearance in all of my stories, whether they're about him or not! He's such an attention whore. I've written a lot of Nick romance in terms of my longer stories, but you'll find that my one-shots are mainly about the boys themselves doing what they do best - angsting and being cheesy and bromantic.

Feel free to add me on twitter @sakabelle :)

Summary:

"Shortly after I was born, the doctors figured out that I was broken. I had a hole in my heart..."

Ever since he was a child, Brian was well aware that he was living on what he's always referred to as "Borrowed Time". He always believed that he'd overcome it, like Batman overcoming darkness. But in 1998, when Brian was on top of the world, the moment came when it all could come crashing down...

Ugh God, I really hate Lou Pearlman. That guy is serious scum. Ergh. That dream Brian had was definitely freaky and telling of the future and what could possibly happen, in the weird way that dreams do. So creeeeepy. But, onto happier things, I really enjoyed Brian and Kevin's conversation about engagements and weddings and Kristin and Leighanne! And also AJ's picture of course, I'd really like to see that, haha! But it was so creepy how Lou took it away and put it in his pocket. Don't want to think about the things he'll do while looking at it! LOL ugh, ew! Um, but anyway, great chapter! :)

Author's Response: IKR! He's so gross. I'm trying to figure out where to balance Lou as far as the accusations are concerned, and I think the way I have it currently storyboarded out will be effective to address it without getting too into it or making any accusations that may/maynot be true, you know? Brian's dream was an interesting part of this chapter. I was trying to figure out how to depict what was going to happen in a dream so I looked up on Google "dreams that involve the heart" and literally the dream dictionary that came up said that to see a heart removed from a body signified betrayal of trust by the person removing it, and seeing your own heart in a dream signified health and business issues in your future. Um could that be more perfect? So yeah having Brian dream that after Lou chewed him and Nick out like that ended up working out perfectly for th symbolism and for him to explain it away easily in the story. I'm having fun researching this stuff, can you tell? Thanks again for the reviews! :)

OMG... I remember watching that Intimate & Interactive special live on Much like it was yesterday. I haven't seen it in years and I could tell you the outfits they wore, and the look on Nick's face when he's the only one who answers "Briefs," to their question LOL. I'm going to have to go watch all those videos you linked now, hahaha! What a fantastic special that was! I told you I was having a nostalgia moment! :D

Anyway, the chapter! Their conversation on the way to the show was really good. I liked how the others are hesitant to say anything bad about Lou, but Nick really gets it, and you can tell he's holding back saying more. I get that the guys are grateful to Lou for what he did for them, but at the same time Lou's treating them like shit. And it's at what point do you decide that even though someone did something great for you, that doesn't give them the right to act like they own you. And it seems like Brian's slowly realizing that. The others will come around, I'm sure. I liked Brian's little moment with the fan, and how it made him feel good about his career and what he was doing. Also liked his little conversation with Nick at the end. I wonder if Brian's opinion will change on that as the story goes on. Really great chapter, Hannah! and now I'm all caught up! Love this story so, so much!

Author's Response: LOL I wonder how long after this appearance the pantsing Nick always whines about happened? Only because their reactions to Nick being the only one in briefs was so hilarious. And I was so disturbed by AJ's hair -- ohemgee, he looked like young Howie Mandell. I died. LOL But it was such a classic BSB performance! I'm so glad I got to see it. LIke I said on Twitter I never had before. So awesome! ..... And back to the chapter, too. Ahem. It's really hard staying neutral to Lou from this end of it, having already seen what comes of it all. Writing the guys' struggle as they come to terms with understanding what Lou is is really hard, too. I keep having to step back and think about what they're all feeling in regards to the fame and everything. That little conversation with Brian and Nick at the end is kind of revealing to the fact that it's not just Brian being worn out by the fame, which really explains Nick in later years and AJ with the drinking as well. Of course those are issues that won't actually be covered in the story, but their foundations are still here and it's interesting trying to get into their heads psychologically even though I'm technically writing about Brian. Kinda leaving the doors open I guess in case I decide to make this a miniseries like I was saying on the forums.

Johnny really bothered my in this chapter, as I'm sure he was supposed to. I found it really creepy when he came up behind Brian and said that was the reason he wasn't the manager. So managers are okay with people getting hurt, so long as they don't hurt their bottom line? And the paycheck thing? Ugh, yeah, Johnny and Lou are getting paid, but what about my poor babies? 300,000 to split between the five of them, disgusting. They need new management. And now I'm ranting about stuff that didn't even happen in your chapter, lol sorry Hannah just their old management makes me want to scream! I really enjoyed how Brian was so concerned for the fans and how he was praying for them, and each of them individually too. I could really see Brian feeling that way. I also liked how they went to visit the girl, and how it made Brian feel even more guilty. Though, that was very sweet of them to do, but of course Johnny just wanted them to do it for publicity. Ugh God I hate him!

Great chapter though! Despite my major Johnny rant lol I really did love it and I'm looking forward to the next one! :)

Author's Response: LOL I was like "wait, I didn't touch on how much they've made yet have I?!?" Win. Like I said on Twitter, I love your mini-novel reviews. They rock so much! And Johnny's creepy bastardy ways were way easier to write than what I've been writing about him and Lou! Bwahaha. Your rant rules!

So now they're starting to realize they may be getting ripped off. I was only one chapter ahead in talking about that! lol. But God, you'd think being international popstars they'd be able to afford expensive engagement rings. But no, Lou needs his 45th car. I'd like to see that guy do a dance move to actually earn it... actually, no I wouldn't.

Erm anyway, I liked how Nick forgot about AJ's birthday so Brian let him give him one of the CDs he and Kevin bought. Awww Frick :) And I also really liked how he went out to play basketball with Nick. Always trying to keep him happy... I love 1998 Brian. He's the sweetest ever. God I actually just love old school BSB. And the end was of course particularly scary, even Nick realized it obviously. Brian needs to get to a doctor... and it sort of broke my heart a little when Nick said that they wouldn't ever use the basketball again. NICK! Why you gotta be like that? So depressing. This is so good! OMG. I love it Hannah.

Author's Response: I KNOW!!! Nick not wanting to go get the ball back made me tear up a little just picturing it in my head when I was writing the last of this scene. Lil putz has to go and make us feel all weepy and sorry for him and he's not even the one having a near heart attack here, what the hell? I'm glad you're enjoying the story, I'm really having fun writing it. And seriously, your reviews rule. LOL <3

God, Lou is so creepy. And Nick, my poor boo, just broke my heart in this chapter. I wonder what's going on with him, and I'm sure Brian does too! But seriously, Lou, I can't believe how much of a selfish douchebag he is. Just let Brian go to the doctor! My GOD. I understand he doesn't think it's that serious, but honestly.

Also Brian at the end realizing just how little money they are making was super sad and ominous and made me just want to give him a hug. Good on him for finally figuring it all out.

Gah this story. This story, Hannah! I have so many feelings!

Author's Response: lol This is probably because I'm becoming used to thinking old school BSB style but in Lou's defense Brian didn't really tell him what happened yet, lol But yeah, stupid scumbag shouldn't need a reason! I really did the math Brian did in the story as I was describing him doing it and I was seriously floored. I got the $5.75 figure and I was like "no way that's not even minimum wage!" then I remember minimum probably went up since 1998, so I went and looked up what the then-current wage was and it was $5.15/hour. So yeah they were literally only about 60 cents over minimum wage. How horrible is that? UGH!

"They were just Bone and Frack. That's not even a thing."

I haven't actually finished the chapter yet, I just wanted to comment on this one bit first. I like how you're exploring the jealously Brian may have had over Nick and AJ's relationship (and I really, really loved that line I quoted) because I've seen a lot of fics talk about how Nick was jealous of Brian and AJ in recent years, but not a lot about the opposite way! But I definitely think that Brian would have felt this way too back in the day and Nick and AJ started hanging out together more.

Okay, finished reading now. Lots going on in this chapter. First of all, I want to say I can't believe Nick and AJ were going to do coke, but of course I totally can given what we know about them now. But it was really sad to read Brian's reaction to it. The beginning of the stress on their friendship is definitely showing. I'm glad Brian confided in Kevin about the money situation and that Kevin agreed with him about it and even tried to go to Lou about their contracts. Of course Lou the scumbag has no time to talk to them about it. And I suppose he probably won't ever until he's put in front of a judge. Ugh. I enjoyed how when they were in Atlanta Brian right away thought to go to Leighanne's parents and ask for permission to marry her. Very Brianish thing to do! And him playing golf at the end was precious, though I'm sure he'll be paying for that later. Can't wait until your next chapter! I am LOVING this!

Author's Response: The way Nick's allegience shifted from Brian to AJ as the split in their friendship happened has always been fascinating to me because you can literally see the future forming. Nick's recent admission to drug use and drinking and the cardiomyopathy and everything really has its roots right in this time of BSB history, as he started hanging out with AJ, who we long ago knew was doing this stuff. Where else would Nick have learned it, you know? It's funny how much of Nick really can be found in the other Boys' personalities because of the way he grew up with them. He's like the little melting pot that all the guys threw parts of themselves into. But yes, Brian's jealousy over Nick's departure is something I wanted to explore in this story as well as everything else I'm poking around in... And I couldn't let the good ol' southern boy NOT ask for permission!! My only frustration is I can't find Leighanne's mother/step-father's last name so I had to go the "Sir" route in the story to keep that accurate. Normally, I think Brian would've called him "Mr. (last name)", but since he's her step-father, I'm guessing his last name isn't Wallace. Anyways... THANK YOU SO MUCH for your reviews! They make me smile! haha

I keep wanting to give this five stars. So, just know that in my mind, this story is worth all of the stars. All of them!! Haha.

Lou is so creepy and gross. Is it wrong that I sort of giggled when Brian said that Lou seemed to grow taller? Because I pictured him getting super huge and cowering over Brian, screaming at him about being late lol. But honestly, that was a tense moment, especially when Brian said he was onto him and that he paid them minimum wage. Lou gon' get screwed! Ugh. Serves him right.

And AJ and Nick! Ugh, those boys going out and getting into trouble. I laughed at the image of Nick falling asleep into his fruit loops, but things went downhill fast when Kevin started yelling at him. Honestly, I can see where Nick is coming from, where he's automatically the liar and thinks they treat him like a little kid... but he's sort of acting immature at this point, and getting into trouble, and he and AJ are going down a bad path so of course Kevin's going to be worried about him and act all parental. Cause you know, his own parents won't.

As always, this story is fantastic.

Author's Response: Aww my favorite reviewer is back! haha. And I have almost as much reading to catch up to your reviews as you do to catch up to the story! Glad to see you're back and still enjoying the action! ... I think there's evidence in interviews and visual cues that Nick really was starting to feel this way around this time. Some of the looks he gives the other guys - especially Kevin! - during this time frame is just so funny. Poor Nickolas, always the baby! It reminds me of him on Cruise at the beach party when Kevin told him not to say fuck and Nick said "I can say fuck whenever the fuck I want" as a response. LOL Those two are so freaking hilarous when Kevin goes all parental. <3 Thanks for the review!

I forgot to mention in the last chapter that I loved the line you put in about Nick saying Brian's heart died. That was perfect and very telling of things that were to happen in the future. The double meaning in that line was fantastic and just proves how great of a writer you are. I also liked how you handed the part where Nick confides in Brian about Lou not being a good person, since we actually don't know what went on between the two of them and probably never will for sure. You handled it perfectly! Great job with that. I'm glad that they made up :)

I also enjoyed the part where Kevin and Brian went ring shopping. I could totally picture Kevin agonizing over finding the perfect ring and taking decades to decide if he wanted it or not, lol. That's so Kevin-ish. This chapter was so good!!

Author's Response: As odd as it sounds, this argument was really "fun" to write because Nick's feelings here are kind of pivitol to explain at this point. It's one thing to be overlooked by your friends and altogether different to be ignored by your Best Friend. And that's a key theme throughout this story that's going to keep rearing its head. Seeing Nick vocalize the way he feels was really freeing for the character in this chapter. I could picture Kevin taking his sweet ass time picking out the ring too!

Haha, I loved their little Lord of the Rings reference at the beginning and how they mentioned they were making a movie about the books soon. You're so good at adding little details about the past! I also loved when Brian was telling Leighanne about his heart problems, that whole scene was so sweet. I actually really enjoy Leighanne in this fic, and usually I don't like her at all.

Also LMFAO at Nick in this chapter! I totally called that he was the one who pulled the fire alarm haha! He was so hilarious sitting in Brian's room being completely paranoid and that part when Kevin called and Nick was like "HE KNOWS!" Ahaha. God I love Nick. And I also love you, for writing this fantastic story!

Author's Response: I'm glad you're liking Leighanne in this story. I know a lot of people dislike her usually in fan fics and I'll be the first to say I've never been particularly kind when depicting her (haha totally thinking of Chasing Beautiful as I say this where she's a royal bitch), but in this story she's really the good guy - which is a truth that's frequently overlooked by fans who dislike her. So when writing this, I really wanted to cast a more understandable/relatable light on her role in this time in BSB history. ... Details are really important to me in writing. Little details can make or break an entire story, and I try to pay close attention to them to keep the realism in the story. I'm glad you noticed!! ... Bwahahaha, the visual of Nickolas pulling the fire alarm and panicking about it makes me giggle because I can literally envision it in my head. Silly Nick.

Oh no, nothing can disrupt Lou's precious schedule. That ass. I felt so bad for Nick when he said his mom had told him not to make stuff up. He should probably tell Kevin what's been going on. Maybe that'll be the final straw to get Kevin more on board with the fight against Lou. At least Nick learned his lesson about the fire alarm, haha.

B'awwww Frick and Frack! I loved this chapter! The two of them are just too adorable. Nick buying the t-shirt was too funny and the fact that it actually exists! Haha. They make t-shirts for everything... I still have my "Flood of '97" shirt lol. Errr anyway. I liked how at the end Nick asked if Brian had told Leighanne about his birthday, and how he seemed to warm up to the idea of her just a little bit when Brian told him that she just knew. Also liked the callback to his twinkie resolution. You do such a good job at making the boys seem so real (I mean, obviously they are real... but you know what I mean) it's fantastic!

Author's Response: I'm having a lot of fun working with the old school boys. I will say I miss current day BSB though! And I'm really missing writing non-angsty Nick. He's a teenage pain in the ass to write! LOL... I actually found that t-shirt before I found the info about the ice storm and it made me laugh so much I've been waiting for the perfect chance to place the t-shirt into Nick's hands since they were in Montreal!!!

Oh my God, this chapter was amazing. It was so sweet in the beginning, and I felt so sad for Nick when he said to Brian that this might be the last time they room together. Awww :( His birthday celebrations were really cute (and I also love how you link the interviews at the end of the chapter :)

I liked AJ and Brian discussing the Nick and Lou situation and how their realized each other knew. I actually laughed out loud when AJ announced "Gotta whiz!" and that lady looked over at him in disgust. Haha, I am still giggling typing this out to you now. I'm glad he and Brian were able to talk about it, but Brian's comment at the end made me sad when he said they didn't notice each other's pains. :(

Oh Brian :( So sad that now the guys are in his dream and they're also just fighting over his heart. That's so depressing. As was the scene where he had woken up from the nightmare and Nick was asking him if there was anything he could do. I just want Brian to go to the doctor and get checked out. I understood his triumph in saying "no," because he's never allowed to say that to anyone ever... but he really shouldn't have waited. I also liked Howie's little comment at the end about Nick. Great stuff!

Argh that dog!! You really do write Leighanne very well in this story, and it's definitely true what you said - she's the hero at this point in Brian's life. The hopeless romantic in me is totally rooting for them, haha. I could picture them so perfectly, sitting there all couple-like with the picnic basket. They're the most adorable ever :) Howie's booty call comments were also hilarious in this chapter, I might add!

What is with dudes and that Princess Leia and the gold bikini thing?! Like, every guy! LOL. I could totally picture Brian being into that though, and of course Nick has to go and try to spoil it - because Leighanne definitely does not look like Carrie Fisher. Not that it matters to Brian or anything, hah.

I also did feel pretty bad for poor Nick showing up at their place like that because he couldn't stand to be around his family any more. That's so sad. His family sucks. Nick's lucky to have the other guys around for support. I'm glad he felt he was able to go see them. The fact that he took a bus though - I am totally picturing him falling asleep with huge headphones on sitting on one of those big greyhound buses and it's the cutest and sadesst image ever. I love Nick, in case you couldn't tell, lol.

Author's Response: You? Love Nick? Really? I had no idea! You hide it so well. LOL
