I was thinking it would be cool to have an option for people who do not have an account to review! Like as a guest!
-
We did have that option but had to take it away because of a bunch of stupid people. It's a lot easier to be mean when you don't have to attach your name to a review and some people were being very mean. It's always a few idiots that have to ruin it for the masses, sadly.
-
Yeah, and there's no reason not to sign up for an account. It's free, it's quick, it's easy, and you can stay logged in permanently, so you don't have to log in every time you go to the site. If you enjoy reading stories on the site, there's absolutely no reason not to sign up for an account to leave reviews.
-
Ugh, I know! It only takes a minute if even to sign up. The other thing that was happening was people were actually using fake screen names and reviewing their own stuff just to get their review counts up. Who does that? LMAO I mean what purpose does it serve to review your own stuff if you know you are the one that did it? People are weird!
-
LMAO really?? That's... sad. We all want reviews because it makes us feel good to know other people are reading and enjoying our work, right? Reviewing your own story anonymously or under a fake name just defeats the purpose, because even if no one else knows, YOU know it was really just you LOL. And you'd have to go review-crazy to review your own story enough to make it count on the Top 10 lists or something. Otherwise... fail!
-
LOL! I know! Some people just don't have any common sense or dignity I guess? So, it was those two reasons combined that the anonymous reviewing went away.
-
I just remember people using it to flame. That was lame. If you want to give concrit, go for it, but be polite and have the balls to put your name on it.
-
I know!

And that's why we got rid of the star system also. (for those who don't know there used to be a rating system that gave stories stars out of 5) People who wanted authors they didn't like to look bad would give them really low stars over and over again. Lucky for us everything is logged so it was easy to find out that people were doing it.
-
Yup, I remember that too! What used to kill me was those same people would go into a story and give it a glowing review and then purposely lower the star count after they left that review. lol People boggle my mind. I'm mind boggled!

Jealousy!

Seriously! I was kind of shocked when I logged in to check and saw who some of the people were that were doing it. It made me a sad panda lol
-
I can see both sides. On Yorkie's side I know first hand that some people who are not into fan fictions on the writing side are afraid of making accounts. I mean I'm guilty of that. On the other side I can see where people would say rude things anonymously. As for the star rating... that sounds awesome. If you could see who was doing it why not make it a member only privilege and ban people who do it?
-
I'm not sure why you or anyone else would be afriad of making an account. It's not a scary thing, only if you plan on not following the rules. It really only does take a minute to sign up. Probably less of a hassle to sign up there then on this forum. lol
As far as the star counts go, I think what some people don't realize is as mods we have access to everyone's IP addresses so if we want we can track anyone on this site or the main one at any time if something suspicious is going down or if we think somone might be posing as someone else...
But still Brintessa, that's a lot of work and not worth the effort. The stars ended up hurting more people than helping them and in the end it was voted upon that we get rid of them.
-
There are more reader accounts than writer accounts on AC. Why would someone who isn't into fanfic be reviewing it anyway?
And the star reviews didn't work, people weren't honest when they used them. It also allowed for authors to star themselves, which as I'm sure you can guess, most people gave themselves five stars. Again we come back to people reviewing themselves. We can see everything that happens on the site and on the board, but we don't want to have reasons to ban people. We would rather take away the temptations to keep the peace.
-
Weird Mare, we were both writing at the same time and said nearly the same thing...
-
lmao somehow that doesn't surprise me.
-
Yeah, and it would be hard to ban people for abusing the stars when you can't know for sure the motive behind their rating. If readers were going to get banned just for rating a story one star out of five, there'd be no point for having the star ratings at all. They could give a story one star because they're jealous or don't like the author, or they could give a story one star because they legitimately think it sucks (and maybe it legitimately does).
There are stories on AC that, if asked to honestly rate them, I'd give one star. But I don't review stories that are that bad; as Thumper's mom would say, "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all." I remember the stars being there, but I don't remember really even using them; I didn't review much back then because I didn't actually read much on AC back then. All the stories I followed were on other sites.
I do remember the drama, though, when people were getting flamed and unfairly rated down for no legitimate reason, and we don't need that crap happening again. We're better off without them.
-
^ exactly on all counts lol it was a hassle and a half!
-
Really? Maybe I will make an account. I thought most people with accounts where writers. hmm...
LOL you already have an account; the writer/reader accounts are the same.

Yeah so the bad thing about sharing computers and keeping your account as always logged in (yorkie) is that if dumb people like me dont check we get on and say stuff as someone else and make other people look dumb!
so I, TESSA will now correct myself.... I MIGHT MAKE AN ACCOUNT THEN. I THOUGHT ONLY WRITERS MADE ACCOUNTS!
-

That is really messed up!

No, because you have to have an account in order to review, make a list of favourites, track stories, etc. That is what most people use their accounts for.
Also, it's kind of odd that you guys would pass a computer back and forth and log in and out each time to reply to each other lol
-
LMAO at the idea of people reviewing their own stories. That's just sad. Cause I mean seriously, what would the point be?
-
knowing us in real life is even more complicated! ha ha!

LOL why are you guys taking turns logging out and in? I'm picturing you pushing each other out of the way to get in front of the computer - "Ooh, I have something to add to that! Lemme on! *logs the other one out* Just post under the same name. Unless you're worried everyone will think you're both the same person or something...
-

hmm.... uh.... thinking.... i gots nothing!
-
I signed up for an account a few times, but somehow it always gets deleted. Do the accounts get deleted if they're inactive for a period of time?
-
I don't think so.
-
Weird... I wonder why my accounts never save then.
-
What message do you get when you try to log in? Are you sure you're not just forgetting your username/password?
-
I don't even remember because it's been so long since I tried to create/keep an account cause I just gave up. But no, I'm positive I was using the correct username/password. I think the message I got may have been something about the username not existing or something like that.
-
Weird. It should have worked.
-
One of my accounts worked for awhile but eventually stopped.
-
I just wanted to throw out there there is a mod where if a person was to give a star rating of 1 or 2 they have to explain why...you know in case it was ever brought back :)
-
I don't understand why people would review their own stories under false names. That's just weird! I know reviews are nice and make us feel good about what we've written, but writing is supposed to be enjoyable and not a popularity contest (in my opinion).
After reading about the star system, it sounds like getting rid of it was a good thing. People can be nasty for no good reason. Why would someone leave a good review and then give it one star? Jealously maybe?
As for signing up, it only takes a minute, so there is no need for guest reviews. I also don't get why someone would leave a nasty review as a guest. It's really cowardly.
