Title: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 01, 2012, 01:54:06 PM
Okay this is going to be a very awkward month if I have to do this myself  :'( lol

Because several of you requested I have another month, I decided to go ahead and give myself another one lol I had a really hard time deciding which story to pick. I was going to go with an old one but I know how this thing works and figured it was best to do one that most of you have read and might want to discuss. I went with What Lurks Around the Corner.

This is the time I would assign you chapters to read but lets be honest, I don't think anyone who hasn't read it will actually read it, so instead i'm just going to say if you want me to answer any questions etc... post them in here and i'll be more than happy to answer them for you.

If anyone wants to play host that would also be great because honestly? lol This is weird.

Happy reading! lmao erm...  :-*

Here's the link in case anyone wants to check it out.

Yay Mare! I love this story, I really really do LOL.

1) Tell us one thing about your story that no one else knows?

2) How long did it take you to write this entire story?

3) Give us a summary different from the one you have posted on AC, with a few more spoilers to make people tune in.

4) What made you come up with the concept of this one?

5) Who was your favorite character in this story and why?

6) You had to know this was coming, who was your least favorite?

7) Are all the boys in this one? If not why did you choose to exclude them?

Bonus Question - what was your favorite scene to write in this story?

1) Tell us one thing about your story that no one else knows?

I really kept changing my mind about things throughout the entire story and that was a first for me. Originally Bob was going to be the bad guy and I had never planned on writing a brother lol He kind of wrote himeself and I was all..what? Okie dokie then. I had also planned on killing him for good and killing Kevin, but I couldn't do it. I also made the decision to stop writing while I was writing this one.

2) How long did it take you to write this entire story?

Not sure, probably about 9 months or so. Usually I start in the summer and finish around Christmas lol

3) Give us a summary different from the one you have posted on AC, with a few more spoilers to make people tune in.

Breeana McShane was the most popular girl in her high school and wanted to have smutty sex all day and all night long with Nick Carter and Donnie Walhberg. See what happens when they all meet up for one hot night in a janitor's closet. Will AJ get her pregnant with a baboon baby? He wanted to be part of the story, he felt left out!

That'll get some people to read this who haven't yet!

4) What made you come up with the concept of this one?

I just thought how crazy it would be to wake up one day and find out your entire life was one huge lie and all these weird random dreams you had since childhood turned out to be real!

5) Who was your favorite character in this story and why?

I loved writing Max. He was nice and sarcastic and we never really knew if he was a good guy or a bad guy. I tried to think Snape as I wrote him. What would Snape Do? lol

6) You had to know this was coming, who was your least favorite?

Jane and Bob. I'm not a fan and try to leave them out of things as much as possible but sometimes you just gotta do it.

7) Are all the boys in this one? If not why did you choose to exclude them?

Of course!

Bonus Question - what was your favorite scene to write in this story?

You guys are probably going to laugh a lot at my replies to some questions because of my horrible HORRIBLE memory! I couldn't even remember the name of this story, remember? lmao Saying all that i'm not sure I have a favorite scene. I think the one visual I had in my head the entire time was of Nick hiding under his bed witnessing his mother's murder. I kind of based my entire story around that scene.

Wow, if anyone hasn't read this i'm just giving all kinds of things away! lmao

LMFAO at your summary!!!

I love this story, Mare!  You are great at so many genres, but your suspense stories like this one and It Stays will always be my favorites.  You know how to keep people guessing and how to leave them hanging!

Mare you already know how I felt about this story lol. I basically spammed you with reviews. It is definitely one of my favorites by you. I especially like the part where Nick kept wondering the stuffed pig's name, where did that idea come from?
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 02, 2012, 06:01:15 AM
Thanks, Tracy! I always looked forward to your reviews! Seriously it's one of the things I miss about not writing anymore lol

The pig idea came from a chat with Rose, Julie and a few others and I was trying to come up with a name for this story. I was having the hardest time coming up with a name and I just said something like. I should name it something random like The Blueberry pig! Of course when I started writing this, I found the perfect opportunity to add it in there so I did. So, yeah it was an inside joke that actually ended up being an important plot point. Who knew? lmao

Awww *blushes* well I always looked forward to new chapters, even if I waited a long time for them. There was so much about this story that I liked, the idea was just really clever. I also remember the part about Nick hiding in bathrooms all the time, I noticed you've used that in other stories. Is that a trait you see the real Nick having or just something you came up with?
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 02, 2012, 08:30:22 AM
Actually it's something I do lol

Whenever I tried to get away from bad things happening in my house, I often ran into the bathroom and locked the door.

Oddly enough I do that at work. If I am upset I go in there until I calm down. Something about a bathroom is calming lol

I used to run to the bathroom to hide too!  I wondered the same thing about Nick with the bathroom as didn't you write him hiding in the bathroom in It Stays With You? Or have I got the wrong story.

Apart from the boys, who was your favourite character to write?
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: FrickingKaos on June 02, 2012, 05:44:52 PM
Yeah I think he did. And I would know since I've read basically everything mare has posted lol. I could have sworn he's done that in another story.

Mare, I love the flashbacks to the night Nick's mom had died, how did you come up with all of it? It was very realistic.
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 02, 2012, 06:14:30 PM
Nope, you're right Steph. He spent a fair amount of time in the bathroom in It Stays. I think Nick and the bathroom have made a lot of appearances together in several of my stories actually lol

To answer your question, like I said earlier, my favorite character to write was Max because even as I was writing him I wasn't ever really sure if I was going to make him a totally bad guy or not. I enjoyed writing his many layers and his dry sense of humor especially when it came to mocking Kevin lol I tried to make him come off as Snape as much as I could. Someone you loved but also didn't fully trust. It was fun to read people's comments about him along the way.

aww, thanks Tracy. Yes he definitely spends time in the bathroom in more than one or two stories. I am pretty sure it's more like ten or so. Maybe that'll be a good 'challenge' lmao count the number of times Nick goes and hides in the bathroom in one of Mare's stories!

The whole flashback scene with his mother is the thing that kept popping in my head at the very start of the story. You know when you get an idea for a story and a scene might stick in your brain? Well, this is the scene that sparked the story. I just had a vision of this woman dying in front of her kid and it wouldn't go away. It's probably one of the only scenes that never changed a thousand times. LOL I wrote it just as I pictured it.

Thanks for the questions guys! :) I'm impressed I have been able to answer them thus far!

Max was a great character!  You definitely kept me guessing with him; I couldn't tell if he was a bad guy or not.  Definitely reminded me of Snape.  Not a true villain, but not really that good of a guy either.

Max was a very Snape like character. You never could tell if he was good or bad.  You wanted to believe that Nick finally found someone he could trust then you threw in the diversion and made us think he was evil... you wrote that really well.

I know you mentioned that the brother kind of crept his way into the story, were there any scenes that found their way into the story and stuck whether you wanted them there or not?

*holy cow I asked a question in this thread*

I recently read the story after reading Whatever the Night and I was happy that I gave it a go.  It really was a great story and now I know why you are called "The Queen of Suspense". :)

Ooh yes. I agree Max reminded me sooo much of Snape, probably why I liked him so much. I also wondered how you came up with Nick's brother and his name really being Andrew.

Thanks, Lore!

There were SO many scenes that ended up in this story that never meant to be there. This story really wrote itself lol

The whole dumpster scene came out of nowhere as did the scene where Nick meets max in the bathroom for the first time (a bathroom scene again lol) and the whole therapist part came out of nowhere lol

I really am the queen of suspense for this one because I never knew what the heck I was going to do! lol

I really didn't put that much thought into the name. Andrew was the first name that came to mind, so I went with it lol I wish I had a more witty response but sadly, no.

Oh and to answer the brother part of that question, Tracy. You know how much I lovd brotherly bonds. I always try to include that in some way & when given the opportunity to give Nick a non douchey sibling like the ones he really is stuck with, I'm always more than happy to oblige. So, just like in Separate Ways where I gave him a new cool older brother & Protect & Serve where I made Kevin, AJ & Brian his brothers I decided Nickolas would make a great one as well.  :)

I envy you for your ability to write that way!  I guess I used to write that way, but the results were not very good, and when I try to write without an outline now, I end up with writer's block and no inspiration (*cough*GR*cough*).  Yours always turn out like you planned it that way all along!
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare

Thanks, Julie! Yeah, for some reason I just can't write with outlines. Maybe it's all the improv acting I have done in my life? But I kind of work better off the cuff although this one was by far the most unscripted story I have ever written lol I'm glad they all seem to work out in the end lol sometimes I worry they don't!

I know this question isn't relating to Lurks, but which of your stories have you found the toughest to write?  Have there been any you've felt like giving up on?
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 15, 2012, 04:42:35 PM
That's a great question, Steph. For me the answer is the same and that's Scars Run Deep which is the sequel to Protect & Serve. I was going through a major writing funk during that one and really wasn't liking the direction I was going. I also wasn't sure if people were reading it so all those factors made it really hard for me to write and I really did think of just abandoning it at one point. If it weren't for a few people it would have been the first story I ever quit. Luckily I did finish it though and in the end I didn't think it was that bad lol

It's really one of the only stories that lack of reviews was getting to me. Probably because I loved the first one so much. lol
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: RokofAges75 on June 15, 2012, 07:08:50 PM
Sequels are hard!  They usually don't get as many reviews as the first one, and it's hard when the inspiration runs out.  I'm glad you were able to finish it.

Wow, I can't believe June is almost over already!

Here's my question - now that Kevin's back and you've had some time off, can you see yourself ever writing another story like this?  Your suspense fics like this one and It Stays are my favorites!
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 27, 2012, 04:21:58 PM
I know! This month went by a little too fast for my liking. I am hoping July takes its time lol

Thanks, Julie but honestly, I still have no desire to write fanfics anymore :(

That may change when interviews start up & I sense that bond I've been missing. If it does the only stories I could see me writing are suspense and action.

I really hope you come out of fanfic retirement when we see the boys all together, even if it's only for the challenges :)

Which of your fanfics has been your favourite to write?  Or favourite scene in a story?
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 27, 2012, 05:00:27 PM
It's usually the summer when I get my burst of writing energy since I have so much free time. I'm hoping something will happen this summer or i'm afriad it's not going to at all!

I do plan on writing challenge stories, if the challenge seems interesting to me (which I know sounds funny because I make a lot of them lmao) Even if I don't write any full length novels any longer. We'll see if Kevin can work his magic lol

My favorite fanfic to write? That's a hard question lol when I first started I was churning out fanfics so quickly. I would write all day long just chapter after chapter. That was the most fun I had writing I think, back in the Little Cabin in the Woods, The Apartment and Total Kaos 24/7 days. I think I probably was writing and finishing a fanfic a month back then.

My favorite to write though would be a tie between Why I'd do it All Again and Fly fishing. I remember actually looking forward to writing chapters for those two where all the other after my early stuff, felt more like homework.

My favorite scenes are a little easier. The falling out the window scene in Why stands out to me lol

It's usually the turning point scenes in stories. The ones where no one really sees it coming. Like in Shadow Woods the big reveal scene which I won't elaborate on because you're reading it now, Steph or the big thing that happens in Whatever which again i'll refrain from since Julie is reading that one lol When little Nick is kidnapped in Protect and Serve or in Separate Ways when Nick and his brother finally meet for the first time. Usually when I write it's those scenes I have in my mind and I just get really excited when I finally get to them!

Thanks for the questions! I hope these answers weren't overly too long! :)

What Steph said! :)

I think I said this before, but I'll say it again - I'm really glad you're at least still interested in running this forum and talking fanfic with us, Mare!  I can't imagine AC without you!  Really, I can't imagine fanfic without you, because I've known you longer than AC and probably longer than I've known anyone else on here!  Ten years, I believe, since the summer you wrote Mizpah.
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare

It has been a long time!! I remember emailing you chapters for your site while you were in the library working with your mom cleaning computers at school lol

When I think back to those days it amazes me how many of you from the very beginning of time, I still talk to! You and I are the only ones who have stayed with it from all of us way back in the day though!! Go us!! LOL although I still try to get Mersey to write from time to time, failing miserably!

I could never leave this site or fandom, even if I don't love the guys as much as I used to and barely write or read fanfic, I love all of you guys too much to just up and leave. You have all been such an important (all yet hidden) part of my life for such a long time. We're all like a weird little 'lets torture the guys and have a party' family! LOL

So yeah, whether you all like it or not, you're stuck with me! (I'm sure some of you wish this wasn't true :OP ) lmao

^ Yep!  That's how I remember when it was, because I remember reading Mizpah on the school computers I was supposed to be taking apart and ghosting!

I appreciate that about you, because not everyone feels that way.  I've had several friends from that era and earlier who stopped writing fanfic and fell off the face of the internet.  I stay in touch with a couple of them on Facebook, but some of them I haven't talked to in years.  It's hard when your whole friendship is built around a common interest and forged online and then one of you loses that interest and disappears.

Sorry, I'm getting us off topic, but yeah... yay torture!

I kind of think that's so douchey when people just disappear because suddenly they aren't into it anymore. I understand it, especially since so many people were so young when they started up in the fandom, but to just kind of not bother to say anything to people at one point you talked to all the time, just let's you see how disposable we can be as friends to them.

I don't 'roll' like that lol

Thanks guys!  :)

I think it's awful when people just vanish like that.  It happened with a bunch of girls I used to talk to on the Take That site.  We used to talk all the time, even met up on a number of occasions too, but then the site closed and some of them lost their love for Take That when Robbie re-joined and I've not heard from them since!  Shame really, but they obviously weren't very good friends after all :(

I've lost contact with most all of my Lipsticks that I used to work on the site with.  I am super sad about that because I thought we had bonded beyond just working on the site together.  I even told them all that just because they weren't working on the site anymore that it didn't mean we couldn't chat but they are gone, I've lost all but a couple into oblivion.

Maybe some people don't want to remember that they were once silly enough about the boys to work on a humor site.  Trying to push that out of their past or something.  It is what it is, but it's upsetting.

I'm not sad about not talking one person from my past, we really don't mesh due to age differences and her personality change.
Title: Re: FS for June: What Lurks Around the Corner by Mare
Post by: mare on June 29, 2012, 10:04:59 AM
Yeah, sometimes people just drift naturally, but it's sad when you are dismissed just because they are done with the fandom or fanfic whatever it is. Major personality changes suck too. I notice that mostly with people who were really young and immature to start out with.
