Title: American Gods discussion thread
Post by: Sinara on December 08, 2008, 04:51:48 PM
As promised, here is the American Gods official discussion thread.

Has everyone gotten their books yet? I hope so. Let the reading begin!

Don't forget, we're trying to have up to chapter 3 read by Friday. I will be in Alabama this weekend visiting family, but I will hopefully be able to get online for a little bit each day to join in the discussion.

So open those books, turn off that television, and get lost in another world!

Hey guys, I'm still in Alabama, and I don't really have very much time at all to be on the Internet. I figure most people haven't had a chance to read the first three chapters yet, so how about we start the discussion after I get back from Alabama on Sunday afternoon? That will give everyone a little more time to get their books and read. =) I hope those of you who HAVE read it already are enjoying it. Compelling, isn't it? I love how Neil Gaiman can just kind of suck you into a story before you even know what's happening. Anyway, Sunday we'll start talking about the book.

I still haven't had time to go to a book store. Sorry, this week is going to be hellish (Concert week) but when I do have time to pick it up i'll get in on the conversation.

Hey! So what chapter are we supposed to be up to now? And when are we gong to start discussing? Is anyone else reading this one? I'm on chapter 4 right now. Off to a really intriguing start.

I still haven't gotten the book. I haven't even finished my Christmas shopping yet because of this horrid weather. I'm going out tomorrow for the first time since Thursday and hopefully it'll be at one of the stores i'm going to. If not, it might have to wait until after Christmas.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that this is such a strange book! I have no clue what's going on and as frustrating as that is, I like that he's keeping us in the dark about stuff. It's a very intriguing book and so far I'm really enjoying it. It's kind of funny though, you can totally see all the differences in writing style between men and women. Anyone else ever notice that? The way they describe things, the actual dialog. The way the characters think. It's really funny to compare men's writing to women's writing. The majority of the stuff I read is all written by women, so it's really kind of fun and refreshing to read stuff written by a man every now and then It's just a different perspective. (I'm talking about the actual writer, not the main character, though those tend to usually be the same.)

Anyway, I love the simplistic writing with the totally complex plot. Mr. Wednesday fascinates me and I think he and Shadow compliment each other very well. I'm just not that far into the book yet, (100 pages or so is all) but I am enjoying it so far. Lol I'm going to have to read the whole thing just to figure out what the eff is going on.

Is anyone else reading along? Anyone else have any thoughts?

I haven't gotten the book yet. I'm goign to Borders tommorrow so i'll pick it up then. As far as men vs women writing, I think that's why I love Wally Lamb so much. His writing style is very female if that makes any sense lol I think guys are much better at writing suspense and action but overall I do prefer female writers with the exception of Wally. I heart him!

lol where the heck is Katie? She did the same thing I did and totally disappeared for her month. Anyhoo, I finished the book and I really really enjoyed it. I do have to admit that I miss my cheesy teen fiction, but this one was just intriguing and entertaining all the way through. Very unique plot and he has an excellent way of dropping hints throughout the story that are all vital and come together very nicely at the end. It was a great way to tell a story.

I also loved how I was never sure who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. He honestly kept me guessing through the whole thing and I suppose I figured it out at the exact moment he wanted me to.

Also, for anyone who has read the book, were you just as surprised as me by what happens at the end of the second part? When Wednesday meets with the newer Gods? I read that I I was like, "Wait! They can't... They didn't... OMG THEY TOTALLY DID!" Literally. I said these words out loud and y husband gave me that look he does, when I'm really in to a book and I start yelling at characters.

So, I really enjoyed this book and I'm kind of sad that it seems I'm the only one who read it. Now I have no one to talk about it with.

Oh well. I'm finished now, so it's off to read Dancing Down In Red Moon. YAY for SN fanfic!

I have sucked with this month. I haven't even gotten the book although I had a dream about it last night lol I dreamt that he said this was his least favorite book and that Juliily was surprised we all knew it was a guy who wrote it. WTF? lmao how weird is that?

I doubt i'll get it read by the end of the month but I still do intend to read it. Seems like we need a how to host a book club month 101 class. lol

Who is doing Feb?

hahaha, nice dream! The day I start dreaming about the AC boards is the day I KNOW I spend too much time chatting on them. And the actual hosting this wouldn't be so hard, but where are all the people that said they would read along each month?

The same people who always go into the challenge threads and say they are going to write one and never do lol

I did suck this month, but I almost knew I would. LOL I don't even really have a great excuse except that all bookstores involve shopping and the library is just too much work. I hope someone does come in and say something this month. Someone has to have read it besides you. If not i'm really going to try to get it soon. We'll see.

I didn't even buy this book, but I did eventually finish The Lovely Bones LOL.  I'll be around for the next one if it's a book I think I'll like.

LMAO, yeah, I should have known it'd work much like the challenge thread. (Of which I have not answered yet this month)

lol don't worry yourself too much. It's a super long book and the month is already half over. You can just read next months and chat with me about it.

I volunteer to host April if we need someone for then.  February and March are looking busy, but I think I could definitely commit to hosting the discussion in April if it's not already taken.

I'm not disliking it. It's just odd. I haven't gotten that far yet. He just had a convo with his dead wife and met up with the weird hungarian people lol

I am just so confused lol I want to stop reading but I know it'll probably get better any minute, right? I feel like I need to be high to read this one or something. Kind of like Listening to Pink Floyd sober? lol

I am getting a kick out of the wife. I think she's my favorite chracter so far.

Probably, because it's not making a lick of sense to me. Not one iota lol not yet anyway. Although i'm reading it between classes. I have a feeling it's the kind of book I need to concentrate fully on.

I mean I get the idea and it's a great one but i'm just not getting wtf is happening. Talking dogs and ravens lol it's like I wrote this book or something! I'm waiting for the dancing cucumbers!

lol I'm trying to remember where it all started to click for me. It was a WHILE though.

I'm about ten pages away from the end of part one, so I was really hoping everything would be clicking by now. I mean in temrs of the fact there are a lot of Gods in America, I get that, but the plot still is kind of missing to me. lol
Title: Re: American Gods discussion thread
Post by: mare on March 09, 2009, 06:04:03 PM
Okay so you know what this book reminds me of? I'm almost done. I have about 50 more pages to go which I plan on reading tomorrow during my lunch break lol but this entire story reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer eats too much of that chili with the hot peppers in it so he goes on this mystical journey where he talks to the coyote. I felt like I was reading this episode lol

I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about the book other than I in no way shape or form ever want to see it turned into a movie! lol

It's such a clever idea but still not sure what the real point is supposed to be. Maybe it all unfolds within the very last pages though. I'm not a huge fan of mythology and was having a hard time remmebering all of these Gods as well. LOL

I finally finished this book. I would love to hear what everyone thought of it. I know Kelly and Julilly have read it and Sinara who hasn't said one word since she started hosting. lol

Personally i'm on the fence with it.

The ocncept was awesome and I found it as a whole really entertaining but I spent too much time WTFing about everything. There were too many characters for me to remember.

My favorite character was Laura. I thought she was awesome for being dead and all. I also enjoyed Czernoebog and some of the townspeople. I can't remember their names but the guy who ended up killing all the kids and the policeman.

I wasn't a big fan of Shadow. I found his character annoying for most of it. lol

I feel a lot the same way, Mare. Over-all I really enjoyed it, but I did get frustrated from time to time with the WTF factor. My favorite character was actually Wednesday because I could never figure him out completely. Even up until the very last battle, I wasn't entirely sure what he was really up to. I thought Shadow was ok, but not on my list of all that memorable characters. Another character I liked was the Mr. Ives guy or whatever his name was. The funeral home guy.
Title: Re: American Gods discussion thread
Post by: mare on March 11, 2009, 06:02:12 PM
ooh yes, I enjoyed the funeral home guys too. Wednesday was a great character but then again at the end I was all confused about how he was there if he was dead? LOL That's how the whole book was for me. Once I thought I had a grip on everything, something would happen that would make me feel dumb again.
Title: Re: American Gods discussion thread
Post by: honey on March 11, 2009, 06:09:14 PM
When did you figure out that Shadow was

SPOILER ALERT.....

Wednesday's son? I figured it out a while before it actually came up in topic, but I think that's the only time I felt ahead of the game.

Oh, and what'd you think of the lady who eats guys through her vagina? That was near the front of the book and the first real WTF moment. I read that and I was like....  :raisebrow:

Oh! And how about that trippy scene where he's tied to the tree and suddenly he's being escorted through the afterlife by creepy moon lady, and the cat that he once got busy with? Random. And how about being raped by a cat in his sleep in the first place? SO RANDOM.
Title: Re: American Gods discussion thread
Post by: mare on March 11, 2009, 06:16:47 PM
LMAO!!!

The vagina lady...that's when I said "Okay...so that's how it's gonna be, huh?" And the best part was she neevr came back! That's one of the things I was bugged about. All of these people we were introduced to I thought would come back but most of them never did.

I figured out Wednesday and Shadow's relationship once he started talking about never knowing his dad. I didn't feel ahead of things though. The only time I felt ahead of the game was when I figured out Hinzleman was a God and was killing all the girls. I kind of got that right away. I thought that the policeman was also one though and I was wrong about that.

That tree scene was the one that was very Simpsons-esque. It was odd from start to finish and I had a hard time visualizing the whole thing. Which might be a good thing lol

That whole cat thing was random and disturbing and once again never resolved! LOL

I also loved some of the Coming to America parts. I think those were my favorite parts of the book, but most of those guys never showed up ever which made us learning about them kind of stupid and pointless.

Wasn't vagina lady the one that got run over by the limo in the hollywood hills?  But yeah, I was waiting for her (and others) to come back and play a significant role too, but they didn't.

I don't know, maybe? That's the problem did we even find out her name? I think Vishnu was run over but was that the same one? LOL Confusing!

Well at least we know that if they ever make a move if this, Paris will have a part!
Title: Re: American Gods discussion thread

Yeah I was on to Hinzleman and killing the girls pretty early too. I even had it figured out that they were in the car on the ice pretty early on.

I liked the Coming to America stories too. But I think my favorite scene was actually the bank robbery where Shadow made it snow. But again, that subplot of Shadow being able to tap into the magic was never really used either.

^ it is her world. We only live in it! lol

I didn't even think about the cars. In fact even up until the time he was going to the car I didn't get why he was doing what he was doing lol I was slow on that one.

I did enjoy the fact that the whole battle was just a big con game. I thought that was clever. You would think with them being gods and all they would have figured that out beforehand!
