Title: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: julilly on May 24, 2008, 09:02:21 PM
Recently there have been new reports of plagiarism on Absolute Chaos.

I will reiterate right now that plagiarism is NOT tolerated, and you WILL be caught. We are pretty good at apprehending the "suspects".

Given that these issues have been brought up I'm going to give you all a little lesson. For anyone who has considered copying someone else's fic (even if it's from 1998) or anyone who is interested in knowing how people are caught in the act, I give you lesson number one from Professor Julilly's Moderating101 manual.

Plagiarists and the internet.

People who want to copying the hard work of other's rely on the anonymity of the internet. They believe that by turning an NSync fic into a BSB fic or a BSB fic into a Busted fic that no one will catch on, because no one can read every fic indexed on the internet... right?

That is true, to a degree though many people read outside of the fandoms that you may read, and occasionally come across familiar works. These people, or "informants", will contact moderators with information regarding similar works. This is the top way that plagiarists are found.

There are many other ways that people like myself, Mare, and Chaos can implement to catch thieves though. There is a fantastic feature on the internet-machine called Copyscape. You put in a website, and it will find every other page on the internet that is either identical or too similar to be coincidence. By the power of Google, we can perform random checks on those who may have been accused of plagiarism.

Another helpful tool to use against plagiarists is Google Alerts. You can put in information (like a website, say) and it will periodically check its own databases in search for plagiarism.

The internet is very well indexed thanks to corporate giants like Yahoo, Google, and MSN.

If you want to have your name on a  not that well known, mediocre, fanfic at least put your fingers to better use and write it yourself.

That concludes today's lesson, but tune in next time for the next thrilling instalment: Bouncing messages, and how to properly type your own email address.

Very well said Julilly. Now if there was a way to track down spammers life would be grand!

You know there is a small grocery store around the block from where I live that posts names of people who write bad checks up on their huge bulletin board right outside by the street. I always get the biggest kick out of that.

We are ready to make our own bulletin board on this site with the people who are plagerizing others works. So if you are looking for a popular story and it suddenly went bye bye bye...no pun intended... this is probably one of the stories we are talking about!

Stay tuned for that as well. We mean it, if you are dumb enough to plagerize than be prepared to be called out for it!

If spammers were people they'd be a lot easier to catch, but being that they're robot computer machines of internet destruction... it's a tricky one.

I will tell you that the story was called Cheap Thrills and it was originally an Nysnc story called Somewhere in the Middle that this girl just changed the names and posted it as her own.

This is the link to the real story

http://archive.nsync-fiction.com/viewstory.php?sid=28

This girl also had another story on the site called The Walk which we deleted and now we're thinking she might be trying to repost it using another name so if anyone on here has read The Walk (It had a banner of Nick and Mandy Moore) and you think you are reading a very similiar story please let us know.

Her reasoning behind plagerizing was that her friend told her to post it up.

Nice reason lol what a bonehead!

And yes I am calling her out on a public messageboard but if you are going to copy someone else's hard work you best be ready to face what happens if you arte caught!

She did repost it.  This story: http://accidentalchaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9056&chapter=1

is really "The Walk": http://www.somewhere-someday.com/walk/walkframe.html

Ahh, the power of Google. :D

Let's draw and quarter her!!!

Oh...My ...GOD! How stupid can one person be!!!

Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: RokofAges75 on May 25, 2008, 04:23:27 PM
Stupid enough to post someone else's coherently-written story under a title with no capital letters and an incoherent summary.  Even if you didn't know where to find the original version she copied from, anyone can see that the level of writing of the story does NOT match the level of writing of the summary and title.

What a tard, seriously. LOL

Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.

It astounds me the lengths people will go for.... I'm not sure exactly?  Seriously, why not just come up with your own plot and write your own story?  Evidently that requires too much effort.
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: mare on May 25, 2008, 04:35:00 PM
The thing is, it also takes effort to change all the names etc... if you are going to take time to do that then at least write your own story. I just added a new item on the site lol Maybe that will stop her?

LOL I just saw that Mare.  You are my hero.
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: RokofAges75 on May 25, 2008, 04:45:27 PM
You're the wind beneath my wings, Mare.

In all honesty, I think she must realize she is too stupid or talentless to write her own story (as evidenced by the incoherent summary of her latest crime), yet she wants the "glory" that goes along with writing good fanfic, so she just steals them instead.  Which just proves her stupidity.  Stupidity to the third power, apparantly, since she tried it at least three times LOL.  Sad!!
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: SugarMagnolia on May 25, 2008, 05:22:57 PM
One of those was mine.  It was laughable that she tried to do it.  I saw in some replies where she didn't even change the character names and she went back to "fix" it.  It's just ridiculous and laughable how stupid she was to think that no one would catch it.  The least she could've done was capitalize the names in the one she stole from me.  And put a different male lead in.  AJ did not fit that characterizati on.  At all.  Karma, she be a bitch and will track you down no matter what.

*sigh* I must say I am really aggitated that someone would plagiarize, let alone, get caught and turn around to do it again! I can't imagine how I would feel if someone stole my story! We all put so much time and effort into our writting...eve n if it sucks fat furry monkey butt, it's still THAT person's work and it f'd up that people have no problem disrespecting others like that! I know! The fact that she did it to begin with was annoying enough but then to have the nerve to try to repost the same story on the same site just under a different pen name and title was just ridiculous! it's hard work to write. I mean it's a lot of fun, which is why we all do it but a lot of hard wprk as well and the fact that anyone would be hohum about stealing someone else's work makes me pretty mad, if you can't tell. I will smite if I have to.

I wish we could make this more like "How to Catch a Predator" by the way. lol That's what the thread title reminds me of...
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: RokofAges75 on May 25, 2008, 11:01:37 PM
I actually wish she could respond; I'd love to see what she has to say for herself.  Tanja never responded, just moved on to somewhere new where she could plagiarize.

And LOL Dee, I thought of To Catch a Predator too.  I looooove that show!!  We could have a decoy fan who lures her into a discussion, and then Mare or Julilly come in and are like, "... What are you doing?" and show the documents revealing that the story is plagiarized.  If only we could have cops waiting for her when she gets off the internet.
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: mare on May 25, 2008, 11:04:19 PM
She wouldn't say anything believe me. I can tell she sees nothing wrong with what she did. Her response to my email was that a friend of hers told her to post the story up. Ah well she said, I guess just delete my account then. This is the kind of person who wouldn't respond to anything being said to her.

I keep checking Vaffel.com to see if she is posting there. I'm not sure of any other sites she would post her story at. Maybe she is over at the busted board posting lmao

Wow... that is sad.  She's probably the kind of kid who copies whole chunks of Wikipedia entries into her essays for school too.  *stabbity stab*  Plagiarism is STEALING, and it's WRONG!  Why is that so hard to understand??  Where are her morals?
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: mare on May 25, 2008, 11:08:35 PM
I hope she's a kid. And someone is in there giving her real feedback on the story. Hello? Clue bus? Unless she's being sarcastic which I am not picking up on at all.
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.
Post by: julilly on May 26, 2008, 04:39:48 PM
I even emailed her after she made the new penname and she never replied... I also let Kim know that it was plagiarized because she had been reviewing it, and I notice her reviews are gone now.

I know I'm late, but I did pick hear all about our latest plagerism drama. I actually had been skimming Cheap Thrills too and you know I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt so stupid me actually thought at first that maybe she was just converting it from Nsync to BSB and missed some names. How many times do you see authors who rewrite an old fic and change names? Now I'm going to be super paranoid every time I see that and think Plagerizer! j/k But it'll def cross my mind now!
Title: Re: How to Catch a Plagiarist.

^ That's what I thought originally, too. That's why I left a review at first, pointing it out. but when she continued to do it, I figure she was either too dumb to keep it straight or something was wrong...so I got annoyed and stopped reading. lol.

Mare and I also considered that a possibility, that is why when we emailed the original author we asked if she was just reposting it under a different penname - and she confirmed she wasn't, so that's how we knew.

I will definitely keep an eye out for anything suspicious.  I've never had that happen to me, but I can only how frustrating and heartbreaking it would be to have someone take your fan fic and claim it as their own.  I do make BSB graphics and I've had a couple of people try to pass my graphics as their own.  So, I can definitely understand the frustrations of plagiarism.  I honestly don't understand how people can do that.  The amount of effort this person took to continue posting this story over and over again, they could've been writing their own.  Seriously, it makes no sense.  LOL!

And yes I am calling her out on a public messageboard but if you are going to copy someone else's hard work you best be ready to face what happens if you arte caught!

joining in a bit late for this, but thats a really crappy story to begin with. no excuses but that story is just not so great. lol

So according to Rachel on LD, the girl that posted the NSync story is her friend, and the "friend" she was referring to that told her to post it is none other than... drumroll please... TANJA!

Scroll down a little on this thread for the explanation: http://talk.livedaily.com/showthread.php?t=667576&page=5

It wasn't totally ringing a bell, but seeing this thread now, I think this must be what she's talking about.
It doesn't totally make sense to me, but it could be that this other girl is just a few bricks short of a load... but OMG if it really was Tanja behind this one too!!  GRRRRR!!!

I remember that girl. LOL how annoying. I bet Tonja did that at first because she knew we'd all instantly catch her if she posted it herself. Maybe that was her way of testing the waters to see how quickly we'd figure out she plagiarized. When she saw it took us little to no time, she probably decided to wait a while longer before posting! What a tool!!
