Title: FS for August and #91 is - On Nightingale Hill by Filiklepto
Post by: mare on July 31, 2014, 09:43:48 PM
Well here we are, counting down or up I guess to 100 stories featured. I can't even believe it.

What a great way to get the ball rolling!

We start with your pick for our 10th all time favorite author at AC. Miss Filiklepto aka Hachi aka Chrissy aka the one who never finishes stories!! LOL

I have talked about "On the Rails" a lot! Because it's so out of the realm of something I would ever read. To be able to get someone like me to read something like that takes incredible writing ability and this girl has it in spades!!

I admit I have never read "On Nightingale Hill" but I am going to read a chapter a day while it's being featured because once again, judging by the summary, I would ordinarily not read something like this, but because I know how outstanding she is as a writer, I am willing to try.

So, if anyone wants to read along with me and comment in this thread, be my guest! This is where I'll be talking about the story, not in reviews on the site, but in here in the actual thread.

Here is a link to her story:

Happy reading and congrats Chrissy!! Enjoy your month!!

A conversation about all things fanfic with Chrissy!

First of all congrats on being #10 on our all-time favorite author’s list on AC!
Thank you! Wow, it's a huge and unexpected honor to be here. I'm really happy that you guys haven't forgotten about me even though I've been on a fanfiction hiatus for so long.

I sometimes feel like GRRM (the author of "Game of Thrones" / "A Song of Ice and Fire"), making everybody wait years and years for an update. I'll do my best not to make you wait too much longer for a new chapter of something. I'll at least beat GRRM to the next release (I think). Anyway, on to the questions...!

When did you first begin writing fanfiction?
I can't pinpoint exactly when it all started, but I know that by the time I entered high school in 2000 (oh god, was it really 14 years ago?!) I was making some—what I now consider—embarrassing attempts at Buffy the Vampire Slayer and BSB fanfiction. Like seriously, things that would make you groan and say, "Is this how you think people really interact with each other?" Haha... looking back, it's quite awful.

Explain your pen name, and is that the same one you have used for all of your writing?
One of my best friends gave it to me, actually! As a joke, I had lifted something off a friend without him noticing and sat there smiling innocently, waiting for him to realize that I had it while he pointed fingers at everyone but me. When they finally realized it was me, my best friend said, "Look at that little Filipino! She's a kleptomaniac! She's a... She's a FiliKlepto! ...Either that or we could call you the KleptoPino." As I did not much favor the idea of sounding like a pepper, I held out for the former name.

It's still my penname on AC, but in most places now I go by some form of my current nickname Hachi.

Where do you get your inspiration for your stories?
I used to daydream a lot, especially before the advent of smartphones and being able to constantly distract oneself with Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit. So a lot of my fics are based on the stories I would distract myself with when I was bored.

"On The Rails", though, was inspired by real historical events in American history. It's possibly my oldest story that I'm still working on because I started it back in 2003.

Do you ever model your characters after yourself?
I used to, especially when I was younger because it was a helpful way for me to process the things I was going through at the time. Most of those fics never made it as far as getting posted online for public consumption. However, Carla from "On The Rails" does have a complicated relationship with her family, which was something I could really relate to back when I started writing it.

Which story is the most personal to you?
Hmmm, maybe the ficlet I did for Nick's birthday challenge back in 2011: "In Which the Heroine Vows Never to Throw Anyone a Surprise Party Ever Again…" Even though she is not actually modeled after me, in the end, the main character's spazziness and tendency to overthink things ended up feeling very personal.

I know there are authors who write fics that are quite personal to them, inspired by the death of a loved one or a deeply emotional experience, but I don't know if I'm ready to share that much of me with the world yet. Maybe one day.

Which story is your favorite?
Oh gosh, do I have to pick? Can I pass on this question?!

To be honest, I actually really like all of my stories, but maybe "In Which the Heroine..." is my favorite of the batch if only because I got to tick off the "Completed" box for once.  :)

Do you ever plan on finishing either On Nightingale Hill or On the Rails?
Yes and yes! I know my track record for updating hasn't been too good for... a few years. (Feel free to pelt me with tomatoes or what-have-you. I completely deserve it.) However, I already know how both stories are going to end, as well as most of the road map to getting there.

Like I mentioned before, my goal is to not be GRRM and to finally finish these stories. Let's just hope I can have these done before he releases his next book!

Are you still writing fanfic or any fic at all?
Since I became a professional writer/editor, I actually find myself working less on stuff that's for me and not for work. Maybe because work taps all the inspiration from me. :/

Anyway, in a fit of procrastinatio n I did churn out some smut last winter. I actually wrote it completely on my iPhone in a coffee shop when I was supposed to be studying for a certification exam for work, haha. Later I had the sense to take it down from my main fanfiction account because I think it's wiser not to have it associated with my name, but it is up on AC under a pseudonym. If anyone wants to read it, feel free to PM me for the link. Wink

Who are some of your favorite authors and do you draw inspiration from them?
Oh gosh, that's a tough one. I've just devoured books since I was very young, so it's hard to name anyone specific. I've always had a thing for classic British literature, though. I'm a Jane Austin junkie and have read P&P and Emma both about a dozen times. But you know what, the more I think about it, when it comes to fantasy genre I've always been a fan of Robin McKinley, and I guess you could say her style of prose and treatment of lore both have rubbed off on me. I can definitely see its influence on "On Nightingale Hill".

What are some of your favorite novels?
Too many to name! But if you really want to hear it:

The "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman
"Pride and Prejudice", "Emma", and "Sense and Sensibility" (in that order) by Jane Austen
"The Blue Sword" and "The Hero and the Crown" by Robin McKinley
Anything by Thomas Hardy (not any specific novel; I just like his style)

What was the name of the very first fanfic you wrote?
It was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic that I don't even remember the name of! And it was very bad!

What about the first one you read?
This is going to sound awful, but I was in 7th or 8th grade, and it was some smutty Nick fanfic that I stumbled across before I even really knew what fanfiction was. Some nonsense about Nick having a guardian angel who was in love with him and then who became human to be with him. It was absolute garbage, but my friends and I printed out the chapters and would take turns reading it in class.

Tell us a little bit about your writing process. Do you outline your stories? Do you typically know how they are going to end before you post them? Have you ever reconsidered a plot point and changed it before posting it or while posting it?
As mentioned above, I usually come across an idea while daydreaming. The first scene is always the most vivid in my mind, but I try to see as far as possible to the end of the story in order to decide if I actually want to develop it. After getting the first chapter down onto the page, I then sketch out a rough outline for the story.

I have definitely had to reconsider a plot point in the middle of a story. This actually happened with "On Nightingale Hill" where I managed to write myself into a corner that I couldn't get out of. It took me the longest time (and a 3 chapter detour) to write myself back out of it.

Recommend one story for us to read that maybe has helped to inspire you.
If you mean fanfic, then "Curtain Call" by Julie (RokofAges75) is a great example of the kind of fic I aspire to write one day—something that captures the true spirit and voice of the boys and makes you feel like you're really in their world. I couldn't put it down, and I cried a ton at the end.

If you mean novel, then "The Hero and the Crown", which I mentioned above, for anyone who hasn't read it yet because it is awesome and inspirational.

Thanks for taking the time to talk to me!

Thank you for interviewing me!

Congratulation s, Chrissy!!!  People definitely have not forgotten you around here, even if you only update once in a blue moon LOL.  I'm so looking forward to reading the rest of On Nightingale Hill someday when it's finished!  I can probably count on one hand the number of fantasy fanfics I've read by choice, but ONH sucked me right in and is by far the best!

I'm surprised and flattered by the Curtain Call mention - thank you so much!!  You are a fantastic writer, and I aspire to be as creative as you, so it definitely goes both ways! :)

Thank you so much, you guys!

It really makes me happy when people say that they enjoy my stories even though they wouldn't normally read those genres. No promises, but I'm hoping to crank an update out soon!

Congrats, Chrissy! I have never read any of your stories but will try to read along as this month.

By the way, Are you Filipino?  :)

Well I read your first chapter! And once again, if this wasn't you, I would have stopped with the mere mention of the Carters! LOL

I love how intriguing your start is. Lena and Gunther seem mysterious and of course the whole idea of Lena being in a coma and Nick going to some other world and a castle. Curious to see where this goes!

In the process of reading chapter two and just got to the talking/biting gnome! LMAO and a little terrifying!

I love Nick's reaction to seeing himself in the mirror for the first time and thinking it was someone else. That was very clever!

LMAO at Nick just breaking everything in all these houses.

Wow, I got hungry after reading this second chapter!

Once again I loved all your descriptions. You have such a way with words!!

Believe me, if it feels like suffering, I'll stop! LMAO

Starting chapter three!

I like posting as I read, so I'm just going to leave this open as I go!

I love the visual image of Nick roaming down the street and shouting random quotes, phrases and song lyrics like some kind of crazy person! Also feeling bad for him and his lack of food and drink. What's that all about?

Oh, okay so they are in a castle and Nick is trapped in this Otherworld place. So it's not heaven or purgatory like I thought it might be. This Gunther guy seems like a real joy to be around! I'm assuming there will be some flashbacks so we can see how Lene and Nick know each other? I know...I have no patience.

Okay Nick with a baby = priceless! Even though I have a feeling that baby is going to have a rapid growth spurt and turn into Lene, it's fun to see him with a tiny one and on another note, I'd very much like my own refrigerator stocking baby! Can we buy them on Amazon or something? LOL

LOL I am enjoying having my memory of this story refreshed just from reading Mare's reviews in here.  It's been a long time since I've read it, but it will be fun to reread it someday... when it's done!  *hint hint Chrissy* :)

Yay! It's chapter four time!! Here we go...

Poor Nick I think is going to need therapy after that gnome bit him lol

Loved this line! (Besides, she was the bringer of yummy food, the filler of empty fridges, and one couldn't just take a girl like that for granted.) lmao too cute!

OMG this chapter is just too cute so far. Loving him explaining to the baby how they need diapers because she's starting to smell like a baby does!

"None of my theories about this place are right. What the heck was I thinking? You're not a super-baby; you're just a regular baby after all…"

The little girl looked at Nick and cocked her head to the side. "Gah?" she asked.

"Yeah, gah," Nick repeated. "That's how I feel right now." - LMAO aww

Really adorable chapter. Hopefully the dirty diapers aren't going to help Gunther find them! Follow the stench! lol

How about when I post the next chapter?  ;D

I'm re-reading it with Mare right now to get back into the story (and I may have written about 2,000 words of the next chapter)...

Starting a little late because of lessons. LOL

YAY that you're writing again! Hopefully you're also working on "On the Rails!"

Okay onto chapter 5!

I was going to eventually ask if he was a Backstreet Boy in this one or not. I figured we'd find out eventually but I'm glad to know it sooner rather than later. And I KNEW I was right about the growth spurt. Go me!!

LMAO I love how non-chalant Nick was about this little girl waking him up because she has to pee. Like now where the hell did she come from? Ah well...let's just go with it! At least she's not a biting gnome!

Aww I enjoyed how Lene went around magically making things appear and explaining she had a mother, father and a dog. I'm glad she told him her name. I can't believe he didn't ask her that! Duh! Nick!!

And now they're heading to the castle. Looking forward to the next growth spurt although Nick with a kid is too adorable!

okay here we go with chapter 6!

Boy Gunther is not a really nice guy is he? And now I'm further intrigued by the thought of a Lene split in half and I love the idea of the tapestry. You've done an excellent job not only creating this strange new place, but also describing it in a way that is very easy to visualize. posting  this because the computer is being a butt again!

Okay, well I'm on my Nook now since the computer crapped out again.

Nick's part of this chapter was creepy! The guy totally cracks me up because he freaks out about the gnome but kids turning into skeletons & more reaching for him & he seems fine lol on a side note, nothing is as creepy as ring around the rosie sung by small kids! * shudders*

Hmm... we're probably around 3/4 of the way through now, so maybe about 6~8 more chapters?

Since this is the FSoM thread, I guess I can give you guys some "behind the scenes" info here. I've been digging through old drafts of the story and it looks like I have a few more chapters worth of material saved away that's already been written. The only problem is, I don't recall Nick being such a creeper! Even re-reading chapter 18 made me face-palm quite a bit.

I think part of the problem is, when I first wrote ONH during National Novel Writing Month, one of the inside jokes I had while writing it was to make Nick as inappropriate as possible.  ::)  But now I'm not sure how much I want to post it haha.

I'll see how much of it I can salvage, though!

I think the gnome thing really freaked him out because it was the first sign that things were very, very different from normal. But by the time he gets to the skeletons, so many weird things have happened that it's freaky but not unusual...?

Ring Around The Rose is really creepy, though, right? I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so!

I'm still working on the next chapter, but I'm pretty confident that I should have chapter 19 posted before you finish 18. (I think!)

Oh, I forgot to reply to this one!

OTR is definitely next on the list, but I think I'm going to try to use this momentum to finish ONH first before picking up Nick and Carla's story again. (It's been on my mind a lot lately, though!)

Yes, that song is way creepy to begin with but when little girls sing it, it takes on a whole new level of creepiness!

Glad to hear you'll be picking up OTR after this one. I hope you do have another chapter out before I get to the last one you have posted. I'm bummed this one isn't done lol

Chapter 7 time & boy it was pretty action packed. So Gunther was also the gnome ? Very cool and once again intriguing. You did a great job with thefight scene in the cottage. I love that Nick went right into the flames to get a log to use as a weapon. Thank you for not making Nick the stereotypical dumb kid. We also learn that english is not Lene's first language but what on earth is? If she is even from earth to begin with lol

And way to end it on a mean cliffy! I'm glad I'm reading this late because I can only imagine how long your poor readers had to wait for the next chapter!

Chapter 8 time!

What, a talking dog? Lol sorry, that's like the punchline to the stupidest joke I know. I love the pack of dogs and the explanation that followed. Also the fact that one of those dogs happens to be Lene's Bruno. I loved Nick's wtf reaction when the pack leader said his name was Arthur lol

Okay onto the second half...

Boy this Gunther guy is pure evil. Now I'm getting the whole satelite concept. Two places at once and how splitting like that can take a toll on you. Also good to know that the injuries you suffer affect you in real life as well.

Part three...

Stubbourn Nick refusing to be carried but I'm glad he gave in. Also loved the visusl of both Nick & Lene being carriedby this pack of dogs so close together they probably looked like a magic carpet.

This is so entertaining so far. Can't wait to see your other characters from the other parts of this world.

Chapter 9 :)

I have to say, I'm going to miss these talking dogs when they part ways. So now I understand why all the houses are empty. I also loved Nick's "well stranger things have happened" thought when waking up on a bed of dogs lol

Oh my God, the fact that there happens to be a mention of killing and skinning rabbits in this chapter is just too much of a coincidence for me! lmao Where is Howie when you need him?

Aww farewell my doggie friends. You shall be missed.

I feel like another growth spurt should be happening soon. Nick with a tween perhaps? lol

On to chapter 10!

Wow so now the interesting creatures look like large paper dolls? You are so creative. Where on earth do you come up with these ideas? It makes sense that they would be afraid of fire, especially if they are like I am picturing them to be!

Once again I have to say I love how you portray Nick in the story. He's smart, protective and very caring and fatherly to Lene. So different then the kid always in need. I do admit, the bromance reader in me is wanting the guys to suddenly show up lol

And yay, glad to see they are close to the town although I have a feeling things aren't going to be that easy when it comes to actually getting out of the woods and across the water. I see cookie cutter/paper doll hampering in their future lol

Thoughts on chapter 11:

I'm glad we got a little more history about Gunther in this chapter. I would still love to know how and if Nick ever met Lene in his world or if she was just an observer that happened to fall for him. I'm sure some flashbacks to that will be coming but now I'm curios to see what kind of powers Nick really has and if that means he's not actually a Carter which would be great news for him! lol

Lol at all the "balls" talk. Great action sequence in the water too!

Chapter 12:

I loved Nick's lesson how to properly blend your cereals to create the perfect flavor. I live having cereal for dinner every once in awhile and the thought of not mixing and matching is ridiculous to me!

Lene's memory of her patents being killed was heartbreaking. I can't wait to find out why she is aging in the strange way she is.

Chapter 14:

I don't know what I'm enjoying more, reading the story or reading your author's notes at the beginning of every chapter. I'm so glad I'm reading this late because you would have driven me bonkers with all the delays lol

It was nice reading a chapter from the grown up Lene's perspective. But I'm confused again as to whether he is a Backstreet Boy or not? You mention his family a lot and Nick mentions singing with four other guys but in this chapter, it seemed as though he's not. Now I know how they met at least.

Chapter 16: Okay, well this chapter was just really creative. It almost read like a short story. How do you come up with these ideas? Apple trees that swallow people whole? lol

I wonder where they ended up? And yes I did get tingly about the mere mention of Brian. I hope there will be some bsb memories to come. If there is a bsb.

Okay, the next chapter is almost complete! I just have to re-read it again when it's not 4AM and I'm not half asleep. I'll try posting it for you guys tomorrow night when I get home~

Excellent! In the meantime, thoughts on chapter 17:

I just realized that every time I read one of your chapters, I get SO hungry!! Once again I love the imagery of the fog versus the well lit warm path. I also got a kick out of Lene asking if apple trees usually ate people but Nick was unsure. lol

Uh-oh, Lene's getting all possessive now! I was wondering whether or not, she would start to worry about Nick leaving her and end up steering him in the wrong direction. It has to be hard for a little kid not knowing what's going on.

Yay you for updating!!

Thanks! It felt really good to get something out, even though I've been super busy lately. (I have a big dance festival this weekend so I've been sleeping less than 5 hrs a night ><)

The next chapter doesn't have anything pre-written from my old drafts, but there were some gaps in the story that I wanted to cover. I think I should have some time to work on it next week, so hopefully I can have another update for you guys before the end of the month! :D

Wow! Glad to see you updated! Now if we can keep you updating regularly enough to finish the story- that would be awesome!

Chapter 18: Oh, Lene... Do not let the magical guitar make Nick forget things. He already barely remembers stuff. If you let him do that then I hope he forgets you!

Okay, so it's official then. Nick IS a Backstreet Boy! Yay!!

Well Lene, that's what you get for letting a curse overtake the person trying to help you. A timeout from Nick Carter! lol

Chapter 19:

Yay! The curse has been lifted!

I'm hoping Lene is going to be aging soon. It seems like that's what happens. When I start getting restless with her being a certain age, she grows. And Nick having erotic dreams while she's sleeping next to him is just all kinds of wrong, especially if she ends up being one of the girls he's dreaming about. Ick!

I love your comments.

"then I hope he forgets you!"

"A timeout from Nick Carter!"

Haha those are the best :D Hopefully, I can get some writing done this week! I'd love to post at least one more update before the end of the month.

I'm glad you're enjoying my commentary and I do hope you get another chapter out before the end of the month since I only have one more to go before I'm all caught up.

Onto chapter 20 which I have a feeling will not be one of my favorites based on your author's note. lol

See what I mean? I needed Lene to get older and she did. Very nice! I thought I'd be cringing more when you mentioned the sex stuff but it wasn't so bad. I got through it lol

When I first planned ONH out, I pictured there would be loads of sex in the latter half, hence the R-rating. But now that I'm writing it out I find myself more interested in just telling the story... Not to mention that Nick is surprisingly less eager about the idea of sleeping with Lene than I thought he would be lol. We'll see what happens from here!

Oh, kind of happy to hear that! Sex scenes and I don't enjoy one another. I started to read this story "Big Girl Panties" by Janet Evonovich and I loved it until all the sex happened. Now I'm still trying to get through it but have plowed through about 3 other books since. lol

I'm going to leave my review for chapter 21 on AC since its a new chapter. I don't want to give anything away!

How many chapters do you forsee your story being before you are done?

Thank you for the review!

This question came up a few pages ago... I think I can wrap the story up in the next 5-7 chapters so let's see if we can finish things up here before too much longer. Now that dance season has ended, I think I'll have more time for writing... (fingers crossed!)

You're welcome. I'll be reviewing on the actual story from now on. Sorry, I guess I missed that question. 5-7 not bad. By my estimation are we talking summer 2018? Lol

Well this is the final weekend to let Chrissy know how awesome she is. (In here anyway lol) I have to say, it's been a lot of fun reading this for the month. You are a fantastic writer and I hope you will complete both of your stories sooner rather than later.

:)

A big thank you again to everyone reading for the first time and to everyone who's been re-reading, too!

I managed to post one more update before the end of the month, yaaaaay  ;) You can check out chapter 20 here (http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8279&chapter=22) in case you haven't seen it yet. We're getting closer and closer to the end! I'm so excited~

Thanks for having me as your FS for August and #10 on the Top Ten countdown. It was truly an honor!
