Alternate Universe, or AU. Stories of this type are usually what-ifs, where possibilities arising from different circumstances or character decisions are explored. Unlike regular fan fiction, which generally remains within the boundaries of the canon, alternative universe fiction writers like to explore the possibilities of pivotal changes made to characters' history, motivations or environment.
This is true for all of the nominees, giving their takes on BSB canon in alternate worlds where people fight for freedom from torture chambers and child abuse, men can give birth, get behind the wheel of a race car, wield a police issue weapon, or travel through time, and the zombie apocalypse becomes reality.
