What's There Inside You brainstorms

Ugh. I'm having trouble coming up with the reason why someone would challenge Brian for leadership of the Enigma Diversity in my story "What's There Inside You" http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=11553 This challenger had convinced someone to kidnap Brian's daughter Rose as part of the challenge. I had once brainstormed a whole list of possibilities, but that list has since disappeared.  :'( I'm also not sure why Akela (Brian's predecessor) would have bound whoever it is to silence until after he (Akela) died.

I started this story over a year ago and haven't come up with an answer!?!?!?
