"Hey, Kiddo, you ready?” Ty Pennington asked the eleven-year-old standing in his front hallway.

“If I could get these wings to stay up, I’d be ready,” Lena replied, as she adjusted the wings on her back once more. “Do we have tape or pins or something?”

Ty laughed. “Sure, just let me go look.”

Lena grumbled a little bit, as she kept trying to keep her wings up. She couldn’t understand how they managed to stay up in the costume picture, yet not on her.

“I found some,” Ty stated as he re-entered the hallway. “Turn around and I’ll fix them for you.”

“Thanks,” Lena sighed in defeat. “I wonder how the girl in the picture managed to get hers to stay up.”

“Photo shoots are staged, and then things are edited out, in order to make things appear more perfect than they really are,” Ty pointed out. “You should know that by now.”

“Yeah, but still!” Lena whined slightly. “It’s a costume! Costumes shouldn’t be so complicated.”

Ty smirked as he fixed the wings on her Tinkerbell costume. Needless to say, he’d been pretty surprised by her choice of costume. She always tried to act so tough in front of anyone, and always tried to appear more grown-up than she really was. When he’d asked her why this particular costume, she had simply stated, “I’ve always wanted to have wings, and Tinkerbell has not only wings, but attitude!”

“Thanks,” Lena smiled, as she turned back around once he was finished. “I’m ready to go sprinkle some pixie-dust on everyone now!”

“Before the pixie-dust sprinkling, there’s going to be some rules,” Ty reminded her, causing her to groan. “No leaving our neighbourhood without telling me. No eating any candy until it’s all been checked. No going into a stranger’s house. And no accepting any rides from any strangers.”

“God, you’d think I was a baby or something with the way your talking,” Lena grouched. “I’m not some stupid lil’ kid.”

“If Tinkerbell doesn’t want to follow the rules, Tinkerbell doesn’t have to go out,” Ty stated firmly. “Also, this Tinkerbell is to be home by ten at the very latest. Otherwise, little miss Tinkerbell will not be happy with the outcome.”

Lena rolled her eyes. “Must you always suck the fun out of a good thing?”

“Just go, be safe, and have fun,” Ty told her. “And don’t be late, or you’ll miss our late-night movie marathon, Kiddo.”

Lena flashed him a warm smile. “No worries. I’m all for watching The Chipmunks and Ninja Turtles.”

Ty shook his head as he watched her go. He just hope she abided by al t he rules he’d set forth. He’d really hate to have to punish Tinkerbell; especially on tonight of all nights.

Lena gave a small wave to Ty, as she exited the front yard. “Phew! Free at last!”

She skipped down the street happily. She was a fairy after all here; and since she couldn’t fly, skipping would do just fine. She made her way to the neighbours and did her thing, grinning widely when she saw a large chocolate bar get dropped into her trick or treat bag.

“Sweet! They’re giving out the good stuff!” She squealed. Truth be told, this was the first time she’d gone trick or treating in years. And it hadn’t been by choice either.

A half an hour later, she’d finished going to all the houses on their street. She eyed the next street curiously. Ty had said not to leave the neighbourhood – did he mean the street, or their little gated community? She shrugged, and figured he had to know she couldn’t kill off three hours just on their street alone.

“This is so much fun!” She mused, as she stared down into her bag of candy. “I can’t wait to eat this all during our movie marathon!”

She continued on with her trick or treating, only to find a pleasant surprise behind the one door a few blocks away.

Brian!?!” She squealed, hopping slightly, causing her wings to flutter.

Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys looked down at the young girl before him, smiling as he recognized her excited face. “Lena? What’re you doing down here?”

“Trick or treating,” Lena grinned, stating the obvious as she held her bag of candy up towards him. “Trick or treat?”

Brian laughed, as he tossed a few chocolate bars into her bag.

“Because you make a cute fairy,” he winked, causing the young girl to turn a shade of crimson. “You trick or treating alone?”

“Uh-huh,” Lena nodded excitedly. “Did Baylee go out already?”

“He’s out with some of his friends and their parents,” Brian replied. “Leighanne went with them too, and I was ordered to hand out candy.”

“I’m glad they made you,” Lena smiled shyly. “Otherwise, the long trek up your driveway wouldn’t’ve been worth it.”

Brian laughed. “Yeah, I guess it is pretty long. We don’t always get too many kids up here.”

“Guess I’m just brave enough to make the trek,” Lena smirked, her nose crinkling some. “Well, I should prolly go do some more trick or treating, before it gets too late.”

“Wait, I owe you something, don’t I?” Brian said, as he turned to grab something. “It should be here.”

Lena watched him curiously, her eyes going wide in surprise when he pulled out his gold ‘B-Rok’ chain.

“It was stuck in my pocket. I’ve been meaning to get it to Ty for you, but since you’re here, it’s even better.”

Seriously!?” Lena exclaimed. She’d been in love with that gold chain of his since forever!

Brian laughed as he handed it to her. “Take very good care of it Tinkerbell.”

“Oh, wow!” Lena squeaked, as she delicately placed it into her goodie bag.

“Good spot for it,” Brian nodded. “Candy won’t hurt it, and you won’t drop it this way.”

“Thank-you!” Lena gushed, moving to hug him tight.

Brian laughed, as he embraced her, fairy wings and all. “You’re welcome, Kiddo. Have fun tonight, and stay out of mischief.”

“No worries B-rok! Tinkerbell knows how to take care of herself!” Lena assured him. “Besides, I’m sure Ty would hunt ‘em down for me anyway.”

“Night Lena!”

“Night Brian!” Lena called back, waving as she skipped down his long driveway and out of his yard. She hugged her bag of candy tightly once out of his sight. She couldn’t believe he’d remembered his promise to her after all! “God, I love him!”

She continued on her way, nodding to Leighanne and Baylee as they passed her. She’d never met them, but it was polite to greet people, so she had done so. She glanced at her watch, sighing heavily when she saw she’d best start heading back soon.

“Figures time would fly when I’m out having fun,” she sighed heavily. “Two more houses, and I’ll turn around and head back.”

Four houses later, she was standing on a street corner, trying to figure out which way she was supposed to go, to head back.

“Great, I’m lost,” she muttered.

She shook her head at herself, then turned left and walked that way for a bit. She walked for quite awhile, then made another left. She hit a few houses on that street, then made yet another left.

“I’m going to be late!” She screamed in frustration. She searched her candy bag for her cell phone, as she’d only worn underwear and green tights with her costume. She’d also donned green boots with white pom-poms on the ends of them, and a wooden star wand she’d made. “Damn it all to Hell! I forgot my damned phone!”

She eyed all the houses around her, wondering just what she was supposed to do now. She couldn’t ask anyone for a phone to use, as they were all strangers to her, and that’d be breaking a rule. She kicked at the sidewalk angrily.

“So much for behaving tonight,” she grouched. “Figures I end up in some stupid predicament without even trying.”

She walked along the street for a while longer, kicking at the odd pebble along the way. It was well after eleven, according to her watch, and she’d no idea as to where she was anymore.

“Lena?” A voice spoke then, startling the daylights out of her.

“Brian!” Lena exclaimed in relief, as she spotted him putting his trashcans to the curb just outside the gate to his yard. “Boy, am I glad to see you!”

“What’s up, Kiddo? Shouldn’t you be home by now?”

“Well, if I knew which way home was, that wouldn’t be a problem,” Lena replied, giving him a sheepish smile. “We’re never around here long enough, for me to wander very far.”

Brian chuckled. “Come on, I’ll give you a lift.”

Lena sighed in relief, as she hurried after him to his car. “You’ve no idea how happy I am, that I found you. My feet were starting to hurt from all that walking.”

Brian shook his head. “You’re something else, you know that?”

Lena just smiled at him, and talked his ear off the whole way home – luckily, Brian knew where Ty lived.

“Thanks for the ride,” she told him, as he dropped her off just outside the yard. “I appreciate it.”

“You sure you don’t want me to go in with you?” Brian asked, as he glanced to the door, which still had the porch light on. “Your yard’s a little spooky looking.”

“It’s Halloween. It’s s’pose to look spooky,” Lena countered. “Don’t worry so much.”

“Alright, have a good night,” Brian relented.

“You too,” Lena replied, as she waved, before turning and heading up their driveway.

She glanced down at her bag of candy and smiled once more. She’d made off with a good stash of goodies – not to mention Brian’s ‘B-Rok’ necklace that was buried somewhere amidst all the candy.

“Just where have you been?” Ty demanded soon as she’d set foot in the house.

“Lookit all the candy I got!” Lena said excitedly, momentarily forgetting just how late it was. “We can gorge on it while we watch the movies!”

“There isn’t going to be any movies,” Ty stated firmly.

“Why not?” Lena asked, a confused look upon her face. “You said when I got back, we’d have a marathon.”

“What time is it, Lena Marie?”

Lena’s eyes went wide as realization dawned on her. “Oh! About that….”

“And more importantly, whose car did I see you getting out of!?”

“If you’d let me talk a moment, I can explain! Jeez!” Lena exclaimed slightly.

Ty narrowed his eyes at her. “You’re grounded, young lady.”

“But - !” Lena attempted to protest.

“Get to bed,” Ty ordered. “Because come tomorrow, you’re going to wish you’d slept more and been home on time.”

“But Ty!” Lena tried again. “Please just listen to me!”

“You’re grounded, as I said, until further notice,” Ty cut her off. “And your candy is off limits to you until further notice as well.”

“I – “

“Get upstairs!” Ty shouted, grabbing her arm and smacking her behind swiftly. “Before I get any angrier!”

Lena let loose a choked up sob, as she hightailed it upstairs to her room. So much for tonight being a good one. If he’d just let her explain, everything would’ve ended fine, and their movie marathon still would’ve been on.

She changed into her pajamas, and lie face down on her bed, sobbing. She felt like such a wimp, but she was too upset to really care. Eventually, when she was sure he was asleep, she snuck back downstairs, relieved to find he’d forgotten her bag of candy in the front hallway. She rooted around in the bag, until she’d found what she’d been searching for. She placed it over her neck, and snuck back up to bed. Once in bed, she eyed the ‘B-Rok’ chain that hung around her neck.

“I wish I’d have let you come in with me,” she murmured softly. “Maybe he wouldn’t’ve yelled at me then…”

She fell asleep and didn’t hear a thing until the next morning, when Ty entered her room.

“Hey, Kiddo? We need to talk.”

“I thought you did all the talking last night?” Lena wailed miserably.

Ty sat on the edge of her bed, and rubbed her back gently. “Well, it seems I’ve some apologizing to do.”

“For what?” Lena wanted to know, hoping it was for what she wanted it to be for.

“Brian called earlier,” Ty began. “And told me what happened last night. I’m sorry I didn’t give you the chance to explain.”

“I tried to get home on time,” Lena croaked quietly. “Luck just wasn’t on my side. Then I found Brian again, and figured my lucky had changed.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I forgot my cell phone,” Lena whispered.

“And once Brian had you?”

“I didn’t think of it,” Lena admitted, then blushed slightly. “Brian can be, well, rather distracting.”

Ty continued to rub her back, as they both went silent for a few moments. “So…you still up for that movie marathon?”

“I’m not grounded anymore?”

“No,” Ty shook his head. “Just so long as you promise to remember to call me next time.”

“I Backstreet swear,” Lena solemnly promised.

“Good thing I know that’s the ultimate swear,” Ty chuckled. “C’mon. I made pancakes, Kiddo.”

Lena sat up gingerly, and threw her arms about his neck, hugging him tightly. “I’ll still share my candy with you, if you want some.”

Ty full out laughed, as he stood with her in his arms. “Sounds like a plan to me. Let’s eat some breakie, then rot our brains and teeth.”

Lena smiled, as she rested her head upon his shoulder. She didn’t care how old she was, it was nice to be held and carried every now and again. Especially since she wasn’t used to so much love and affection.

Today – today was going to be an extra good day. She just knew it! Even more so, if he’d remembered the corn syrup for the pancakes!
