Chapter 1 by Purpura Lipstick
Author's Notes:

So you think you can change history?

The pinks and oranges that illuminated in the sky made the night a beautiful one, but it was not one she could stop and enjoy. She was running, chasing after one of them, one of those who thought they could change history, make it better. Those who thought their actions would have no consequences on the future time line, or at least didn't think those consequences through. Julie grumbled to herself at women's fashion. She slowed enough to kick her heeled shoes out of the way and continued running. She would really need to speak with someone about a broader range of women's footwear.

Julie cursed as she slowed to a stop searching the streets around her. She couldn't find the person she was chasing, Kyle his name was. It had been her discovery, such a minute change to history that she was sure Kyle thought he'd never be caught. His intentions had been good, Julie admitted that to herself when she discovered the change. How many lives could be saved with the proper CPR procedures published prior to the early nineteen sixties? That was just it though; those people who died because of it would no longer be dead. What would their lives bring, who would they have become? Sure some might have turned into generous, giving, loving people, still others might have turned evil and destroyed more lives.

Julie knew there was more to it than Kyle saving lives, why this particular time period, why did he feel the need to bring the information back to the nineteen thirties?

“Shit!” she cursed out loud ignoring the stares of the men and women surrounding her. She turned and started to walk back towards her shoes. She picked them both up and continued to walk barefoot.

She was almost back to the building she'd left Kevin at to pursue Kyle when she felt like she was being watched. She spun around quickly and saw Kyle turning and running in the opposite direction again. “Dammit,” she yelled as she took off after him again.

Did he really think that he would be able to come back so soon to try and salvage what Kevin destroyed, or should be destroying?

After she rounded a corner she almost ran straight into Kyle's back as he stood at the end of a line that looked like a food line. Dropping her shoes, she reached around and grabbed his arms, pulling them behind his back.

“You are coming back with me Kyle,” she whispered in his ear.

“Not likely,” he said as he threw his head backward, the back of his head collided with Julie's nose. Her first reaction was to let him go and grab hold of her nose. Kyle saw this as an opportunity to run, but before he could get far Julie saw another pair of hands grab hold of him.

“Now is that any way to treat a lady?” Kevin's voice was serious though he had a smile on his face as he looked at Julie.

“I had him,” she told him frustrated that she was worn out from chasing this guy and Kevin was the one with the capture.

“Team effort,” Kevin said as she grabbed her shoes and they started walking back towards their jump spot. They only encountered a few eyes looking at them as they walked. Kevin wore a badge on his belt so most people ignored them as they walked.

“How about next time I stay behind to burn the pages and you can chase after the bad guy in heels,” Julie retorted, her nose still smarting from colliding with Kyle's head.

Julie had to admit that Kevin's laugh was good to hear. “You know I would have chased after him if I could. Howie was reluctant to let me come on this mission.”

Julie nodded, she knew all too well that Kevin had been on the inactive list ever since Nick shot him during their confrontation in nineteen eighteen when they stopped Nick from doing anything to Hitler or Dr. Forster, the man that cured him. She'd almost lost him then, the man she loved, it was a miracle that Howie had been able to bring him back. She herself had only been put on active duty a few months ago, finally fully recovered from when Nick had stabbed her.

When they reached the designated jump spot, their agreed upon meeting place for when, if, they got separated they stood side by side and dialed their devices to take them back to twenty-thirty. Before they pushed their buttons Julie turned to Kevin.

“Just don't take all my credit.” She winked and hit her button feeling the warmth pass through her, the familiar feeling that she was jumping through time. She still remembered the days when she randomly jumped through time, the only indicator that she was going to jump extreme nausea and excruciating pain that would debilitate her for hours after she arrived at her new destination, if she was lucky enough to be there for hours. When she thought she was done jumping she was pulled back into that world, and when she was she realized she didn't want to know a life without the people she'd met, the love she found and even the time travel.

Kevin arrived with Kyle a short time after her and they escorted the rogue to a holding cell where he would be questioned later. There were several plexiglass holding cells in the room, a sparse few held captives. After half a year of searching for Nick's leaderless group of rogue volunteers, they'd only managed to find and capture three.

Julie had made it her mission to hunt down Steph, Nick's right hand. She had captured her once but the woman managed to escape their holding cells and was still on the loose. She wanted the satisfaction of bringing that woman in herself. She'd even gone so far as to keep a journal of any activity she had that could be related to her activities, a journal that she even kept from Kevin.

Once they left the room, Kevin grabbed a hold of Julie's hand and they walked hand in hand to the dressing rooms to get changed out of the clothing they wore into the past. Julie found out, shortly after she'd been here that there were several volunteers that actually did not travel through time. She knew some researched but there were two volunteers specifically in charge of finding and procuring outfits that could be worn by the traveling volunteers during their missions through time.

Julie smiled at Kevin and released his hand as she turned towards the room with the women's clothing. She started to undress when the volunteer in charge came in, she was fairly new to the position but something about her reminded her of Edith.

“So how'd it go?” The woman asked her, snapping her gum slightly as she spoke.

“We got him Tessa.” Julie sighed hanging up the dress. Julie wondered what drove someone to choose a life costuming others. Julie had some experience with that when she worked on the set of the movie Blue Hawaii in nineteen-sixty, where she met Edith.

Tessa looked Julie up and down, when she reached her feet she looked around Julie and then back at her questioningly. “Where are the shoes?”

Julie looked down at her feet and back at Tessa. “I know I grabbed them. I took them off, I couldn't run in them. They were a little too big, but I swear I grabbed them.” Julie defended herself. She pulled on her jeans and a t-shirt and made her way back to the jump room in search of the shoes that had caused her so many issues earlier.

“What if they catch us?” a female voice came from the room.

“Trust me babe,” a male voice responded. Julie recognized their voices right away, Erika and AJ. Over the past few months the duo had gotten closer. Erika was thankful that Julie brought AJ back safely and from that point on she noticed them spending several hours together, often in quiet close whispers. She could only imagine what it was they were going to be doing, what they were doing in the jump room.

Julie knocked lightly and opened the door a crack calling out a “Hello,” as she dared to open it wider. The twosome looked guilty, she knew that look, she had that look in that room before.

“Just going to be a minute, looking for my shoes.” Julie stated as she started looking around.

“These?” Erika held up the dreaded pair of shoes and Julie moved over to take them. “Yes thank you!” She took the shoes and hugged the woman, “You have saved me from Tessa's wrath.”

Erika nodded and looked over at AJ, Julie got the hint. “Well I'm going to leave you two alone, but perhaps one of your rooms might be better for this?” She grinned and raised her eyebrows at the two before returning to the costume room and turning over her shoes.

She pushed open the door to her room, the room she'd been sharing with Kevin for the last six months to find him already in the bed sleeping. Julie shook her head and changed into her nightclothes and crawled into bed next to him. She snuggled up close to him, the heat from his body comforting. She was worn out from the chase that day, thankfully her nose had stopped hurting and it wasn't long before her eyes closed and she drifted off to sleep.

“Julie,” a hollow voice called out to her.

Julie heard the voice but she stirred only slightly and put her arm around Kevin. He probably wanted her to get closer to her, he liked to feel her close.

“Julie,” She heard her name called again. This time the voice she knew was not Kevin's. She opened her eyes a crack and bolted out of bed when she saw Nick's blue eyes staring back at her, a knife raised above her ready to slash down.
