All was quiet in the backstage area of the arena, where the Backstreet Boys had just performed. But, that quiet was soon interrupted by two voices, one angry, the other pleading.
“How could you do that to me?” Nick demanded. “You know I love you!”
“Nick, I’m sorry. I really am.”
“B-But h-how?”
“Believe me Nick, I swear I never meant to hurt you! That was the last thing I wanted in this world to do!”
Nick’s Flashback…
Nick couldn’t wait to see his lover again. Never in his life had he ever felt so damn happy. “So this is what it feels like to be in love,” he thought as he walked down the hallway to his Hotel room. He knew his lover would be there. His lover always was. What he didn’t know was that his lover had someone with them right then. Someone Nick wasn’t supposed to see.
Nick unlocked his door, and walked in whistling a happy little tune. What he saw made him stop dead in his tracks, and for his jaw to hit the floor.
“ALEX!”
Alex looked up startled, eyes going wide once they focused on Nick. “Nicky…what are you doing here? You’re back early.”
No. This wasn’t real. Just wasn’t real. No way. There was no way. No way that Alex was lying there. Lying there naked with the best friend they grew up with. With that best friend underneath, also naked. It just wasn’t possible. Not possible.
Alex stood up and came over to where Nick stood.
“Nicky, this isn’t what it looks like. Really, it’s not.”
“What? It doesn’t look like your screwing your best friend behind my back?” Nick snapped, coming out of his state of shock. “That you’re not both in here stark naked and sweaty?”
Pearly white teeth bit down on Alex’s lip as Alex tried to find an answer. “Nicky…I was just… helping her out. She needed help.”
“Help to do what? Break my heart?” Nick growled.
“No,” Alex answered looking down.
“I-I think I’d b-better go,” Skylar said, once dressed. Skylar slunk out of the room, Nick and Alex’s eyes both watching. Though, Nick’s kept darting back to Alex.
“We-we need to-to talk,” Nick stated, glancing back at Alex.
Alex nodded silently and went to sit down on the bed after pulling a pair of boxers on.
Alex’s Flashback…
“Why Alex? Why?” Nick asked. “Why did you sleep with Skylar?”
Alex shrugged slightly. “I told you Nicky, I don’t know. It just-happened.”
“Zits just happen Alex!” Nick yelled. “Sleeping with someone does not just happen!”
There was a moment’s silence then, before finally Nick spoke again.
“Do you love Skylar, Alex?” He asked.
Alex shrugged again.
“ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION! DO YOU LOVE HER? I MEAN, YOU MUST IF YOU SLEPT TOGETHER!”
“YES!” Alex cried, not thinking. “I LOVE SKYLAR, ALRIGHT? I LOVE SKYLAR MORE THAN I LOVE YOU!”
“Y-You love Skylar more than me?” Nick squeaked.
“YES!” Alex exclaimed exasperated.
Both looked at one another wide-eyed, not believing what Alex had just said.
Alex watched as Nick’s baby blue eyes filled with tears.

The Boys watched on quietly as their youngest member argued with his once, very much loved lover.
“You didn’t mean to hurt me, Alex?” Nick repeated bitterly. “Then how the hell did you think I’d feel if I found out? Hmm?”
“I thought you’d understand.”
“Understand what? How you could deceive me like that? What is there to understand, Alex? You cheated, plain and simple.”
“Nothing’s ever plain and simple, Nicky.”
“If you don’t love me, then maybe I should leave,” Nick whispered.
“Nicky, please…let us work this out,” Alex pleaded.
“It can’t be worked out, Alex,” Nick replied miserably. “Obviously, you’ve found someone else to love in my place.”
“Fine, if you see it that way, then leave,” Alex stated. “From this point on I don’t give a shit about what the hell you do.”
“Then so be it,” Nick said grimly. He trudged out the door with his head hung, as his tears began to fall endlessly.
Alex watched silently as Nick went out the door. Alex swore that it didn’t matter, but it did, very much so, it cut like a knife right through the heart.
He hadn’t wanted to leave. He knew deep down that Alex hadn’t meant to hurt him, but he was still so mad that Alex had done it in the first place. In return, he knew in order to get over Alex he’d have to hurt Alex, just like Alex had hurt him. Only, he’d never love again, unlike Alex. Alex always fell in love fast and hard, and impulsively went with it until someone new came along and drew all the attention away from the lover already there. Nick, on the other hand, took forever to fall in love, and when he did, it affected every inch of his body and soul. He didn’t dare set eyes on anyone else, unless he had fallen out of love, but he always made sure to tell whoever he was already with first. He didn’t want to hurt them more than necessary. Alex had promised not to hurt him, and Alex had lied. Thanks to Alex, he could never trust anyone again. Ever.

Nick’s Present…
Alex stood there listening to Nick shout, while others watched on, wishing things were okay between them again. Oh, the wishes that were being made right then, and all being the same. To stop Nick’s pain; to keep him from hurting.
Nick looked at his ‘brothers’. “Guys, I’m sorry,” he said softly. “But, I can never trust anyone ever again. Never.” He saw Brian, his bestest best friend, staring at him, with a hurt expression on his face. He gave him a small smile. “Well, maybe one person can still be trusted. But, I dunno.” He shrugged, then looked back at Alex, who had yet to show any emotion really. Alex seemed so-so…indifferent about the whole thing.
Alex stared back at Nick, wanting to touch him and hug him and kiss away his pain, but couldn’t. No. Never again could that happen. And all thanks to one mistake. One mistake that really had been innocent.

Alex’s Present…
Alex watched as Nick came over and stood staring into the brown eyes staring back at him. “Nicky…” Alex whispered.
Nick said nothing as he leaned over and kissed Alex for the last time. He wished it wouldn’t be the last time, but knew that is was all the same. For now anyway.
Alex saw Nick pull back and stare once more as his tears rolled softly down his face. “I love you…” Nick said softly. “Always will…”
Alex watched as Nick strode off down the hallway, his shoulders hunched and shaking from his silent sobs. Alex wanted more than anything to run after Nick and tell him this was all a bad dream. Or anything, anything, just to get him to stay. “I love you too, Nicky,” Alex murmured into the air.
Alex slowly turned to face the Boys that were standing there watching on still. Alex noticed Brian look and stare into the eyes now watching him.
