Chapter 8

Nick placed James down in the pack n' play and gave him his pacifier. "Now what?" He asked Baylee.

"How should I know?" Baylee said giving him a 'duh' look.

"Well you knew everything else!" Nick said.

"Aunt Leigh takes him upstairs, so I dunno what she does."

“Great..." Nick muttered under his breath.

"You could call your sister again or Aunt Leigh." Baylee suggested.

"No way." Nick was determined to do this on his own.

Baylee threw his hands up in defeat.

"Uh let's try that singing thing again." Nick said.

"I'm not singing." Baylee told him.

"Fine, I'll try it." Nick said and tried to come up with a song.

"Try a Backstreet song. He likes those."

"Which one?" Nick asked.

"He really likes This Is Us..." Baylee replied.

Nick nodded, "Okay..." He said then started to sing softly.

Afterwards, James laid their unfazed by the performance.

"hmm... Now what?" Nick thought aloud.

"You could call Howie." Baylee tried.

"No, I have to do this." Nick said and began to pace.

"Would reading him a story work?"

"Dunno, try it." Baylee said.

"Damn but I don't have any kids’ stories..."

"Make one up." Baylee suggested.

"Right, uh... Ok...so there was this boy..."

"No no, no... You gotta start with once upon a time." Baylee cut him off.

"Right, so... Once upon a time there was this little boy who was tired and wanted to go to sleep." Nick began.

"... But the mean, old, blond uncle didn't know how to make him fall asleep." Baylee added.

Nick shot Baylee a look and went on with his story, "...and the Uncle tried everything to make him go to sleep, he sang for him, he cuddled. He just didn't know what to do!"

"So the insanely cute and perfect nephew did something smart and turned off the lights to help." Baylee said moving to shut off the lights as Nick again glared at him.

James eyes almost instantly got heavy.

"Then the uncle... Uh..." Nick trailed off unsure of what to say. All this babysitting was hard work. He was honestly starting to sweat.

"Maybe you should turn a fan on. You're getting all sweaty and wet." Baylee said.

"Yeah, good idea." Nick said and turned his ceiling fan on high.

When the two turned back around they found James eyes were closed.

"That's it? Lights and a fan?" Nick questioned.

"Mommy calls it white noise." Baylee shrugged.

"And you didn't think of this before?" Nick asked.

"No." Baylee said smiling.

"Alright...so now what?" He asked.
