Author's Chapter Notes:

Julie follows a lead and gets some info

Julie looked around the house unable to will her feet to run. She knew she should just pull out the device and jump from this time before it was too late and she was captured for being a runaway slave, but she couldn't bring herself to leave the one place she knew AJ to have been. She made her way to the room he'd been kept in and looked around trying to find any information she could. Her search resulted in nothing.

Devastated, Julie turned to leave, a flash of yellow catching her eye. Her gut reaction was to hide behind the wall hoping it wasn't her mistress running to retrieve the guards. Unable to just stand there and let her fate be decided for her she quickly left the room and watched as the flash of yellow disappeared from the house and down the streets. The woman was defintely not her mistress though.

Even though her stola was nicer than a slave's, Julie knew the lady of the house would not wander these streets at night. Despite her fear of bandits and rapists, Julie followed the woman.

The woman she was following eventually made her way to the Temple of Jupiter. Julie hesitated to follow any closer, perhaps it was a trap. Eventually her curiosity overcame her and she went inside the temple. The woman was kneeling in front of a statue, her brown hair uncovered after the run. Julie hid inside an alcove watching the woman. She did not feel comfortable confronting her until she knew exactly what she was doing here.

After several minutes both women remained where they were in their spots. Feeling it was probably safe to talk to the woman; Julie started to leave the alcove but quickly turned back when she saw another figure enter, Nick. It took all she had not to rush the man and demand to know where AJ was, but she needed to have self control. Would he attempt to strand her in a time again? Would he figure out how they tracked her this time and avoid it to strand her in another time?

The two must have thought they were alone as they did not care that their voices carried throughout the temple.

“Did you find her?” Nick asked. The hair on Julie's arm was standing on end, she had a sense they were talking about her.

“She wasn't in her quarters; she was not in Fulvia's quarters either.” The woman's voice sounded like a child in trouble.

“Steph, you know how important it is that we find her. You reported that the others thought they had found her location. I need to move her like I moved AJ.” She watched as Nick brushed hair out of the woman's face.

Julie thought the name Steph sounded familiar but she wasn't sure where she'd heard the name before. She watched as the woman moved closer to Nick and as he pulled her into his arms. She remembered being in those arms, his arms holding her tight and giving her a sense of belonging and comfort. There was still a part of her that longed to be back in those arms, back in her apartment. Seeing another woman in his arms upset her and not only because she admittedly missed being in his arms, but did he pray on all the women like he did with her?

“Did you get AJ moved?” the woman asked looking up at Nick's face.

Nick nooded and released the woman. “I did. They shouldn't be able to find him now. I won't make the mistake of putting two nuisances in the same time period again.”

“Are you worried that AJ will get a message out? You put him in a pretty pivotal point in history. I mean sticking him in Washington's camp was brilliant but couldn't he easily find a way to get a message to the others?” Steph asked with a playful smirk on her face.

“Really Steph?” Nick said as he glared at her. “How many times do I have to tell you to keep your mouth shut?”

“I thought you said you liked it with my mouth open,” Steph smiled coyly at him as she advanced. “We are in Rome, I could be your Cleopatra my Caesar.” She walked closer to him slowly in an attempt to entice him.

“Not now,” He waved his hands in front of him and turned in Julie's direction. “You need to get back, find out anything you can on where Julie might be. Maybe she ran on her own and died out on the streets tonight, I doubt she is that stupid, but I have to know.”

The woman pouted at Nick but put her wrist up pushing buttons. Soon she was gone and Julie was left alone in the Temple with Nick. Part of her thought that Nick knew she was there and wanted to get rid of the other woman so that he could deal with her. Part of her hoped that he just wanted to get rid of the woman throwing herself at him so he could think. And part of her still wanted to feel his arms around her. She chastized that part of herself as she listened for any movement from Nick.

After a few seconds, she heard Nick begin to shuffle out of the Temple. When she watched him pass her and out into the night she made a split second decision to follow him. Maybe she would luck out and get more information on AJ or about the group of rogue volunteers. Julie already would be able to tell Kevin about a rogue within their walls.

Nick moved quickly through the streets and Julie had a hard time keeping up while sticking to the shadows. Being in the shadows reminded Julie of her life not long ago when she only dreamed about going home and never worrying about jumping again. Now she was volunteering to throw herself back through time to find a man she barely knew and stop a man she knew intimately but not really well.

Nick turned down several alley ways and Julie managed to find a spot where he stopped to watch him. She knew she was perfectly hidden so why did she feel like when he started to look around that he was looking for her?

His eyes fell on the spot she was crouched down hugging the wall in front of her. He started to move towards her hiding spot, she could feel her heart beating a mile a minute in her chest. How long should she stay crouched down before she ran, how long should she stay until she pulled her device out and jumped.
