Against All Odds - Chapter Twelve

A tray clattering to the floor in the hall outside his hospital door, startled AJ awake from
his fitful sleep. He laid still for a few moments, staring at the stark white wall, his eyes
trailing down to the plain gray tiled floor. He lowered his eyes toward the floor, the
newspapers were scattered across the floor, the main page declaring the plane crashed into
the Atlantic Ocean.

AJ rolled onto his back, sighing loudly. “This just can’t be real,” he mumbled. He thought
for a moment and then decided that he wanted answers now, not at their convenience, but
his.

Storming for the door, he turned the knob on the only to discover that it was locked.

“What the hell is this? A hospital don’t lock doors!” AJ said to himself. He turned and
walked towards the closet and pulled out his clothing. Setting about his determined pace,
AJ pulled off the hospital gown and got dressed, his shirt being the last item he slipped on.
He stopped as he pulled the shirt over his head, noticing a strong smell of cologne.

“Okay, funny that this would still be so strong after eighteen months,” AJ said out loud. He
finished pulling the shirt on when there was a quick knock at the door followed by the
sound of keys opening the lock.

“Hi, I have your tray...” a petite blond announced as she walked into the room. She stopped
her sentence when she saw AJ standing in the room with street clothes on. “What are you
doing dressed?”

AJ stepped between her and the door. “I’m leaving.”

“You can’t!”

“Watch me,” AJ replied as he walked out the open door. Upon entering the hallway, AJ
looked quickly right and then left for an exit or an elevator or something that would
indicate a way out. The first door he came to, he tried to open it, only to discover that it
was locked. He quickly turned around to find an alternate escape but was met by two stocky security men.

AJ hung his head, he knew there wouldn't be anyway he could get around the men.

"Come on, sir, back to your room," one of the guards stated in a gruff voice, placing a hand on one of AJ's arms.

AJ pulled his arm away from the man's grip. "I'm going, just don't touch me."
