Against All Odds - Chapter Seven

“I can’t take this anymore,” Nick seethed as he made short paces in the dark
green hallway.

“Please Nick, you have to calm down, getting worked up like this isn’t good
for you,” Brian suggested in a calm voice.

“I am calm, besides what the hell is there to be calm about? They have AJ
written off, dead, gone and they could care less.”

“Nick, you have to be realistic, do you honestly think that he could have
survived something like that?”

“I’m not giving up hope, there are miracles out there that happen everyday,”
Nick replied, throwing his hands up in the air. He suddenly spun around,
coming face to face with Brian. “You always tell me about miracles, can’t you
believe in this one too? We’re talking about our brother here, he just can’t
be dead.”

Not sure what to do with that questioning, Brian managed a slight smile. He
had given up any hope in finding AJ alive, but right now he was concerned
with Nick, feeling that he was heading towards a nervous breakdown.

“See! You’re with me then. Police divers my ass, I say we walk along the
shoreline tonight. Knowing AJ, he’s probably a little hurt and dazed and he’s
laying on the grass underneath some big shady palm tree or something.”

As Brian opened his mouth to reply, Kevin and Howie emerged from the
conference room. Kevin strode past Brian and Nick and walked towards the
exit at a fast clip.

“Kev, man, wait! What did they say?” Nick called out as he ran to catch up
with him.

Kevin stopped in midstride, he lifted his face towards the ceiling and sighed.

“Well? What did they say?”

“Nick, if you had stayed in the conference you would know all the details
about the conversation that went on in there. You decided to be immature
and you ran out of the room, disrupting the meeting.”

“Yeah, yeah, spare me the lecture Kev, what went on?”

“Like they said to us before, they will have divers search the area and more
than likely they will have a boat drag the bottom of the river for a body,”
Kevin replied in a voice that was void of emotion.

Nick stared at his older friend, blinking as the statement was registering.
“That’s it? You’re giving up on him too? I can’t believe this!”

“Calm down before I have you sedated,” Kevin growled.

“Screw this!” Nick retorted as he quickly moved past Kevin, bumping
shoulders.

“Where the hell do you think you’re going?”

“What does it matter to you? You’d just give up and figure I was dead too
and not bother looking for me,” Nick spat as he shoved the exit door hard
with the palms of his hands.

“Nick, settle down, you’re scaring me,” Howie called out.

“He’s getting his ass sedated,” Kevin stated under his breath as he half ran
towards the exit.
