The great conversion
« on: July 07, 2011, 09:03:47 AM »

The romantic debate gave me the idea for this topic.

If you could pick only one story to recommend that might convert a hater into a lover what would it be? Remember you can only name one and then explain why. If you don't have a recommendation for one or more of the genres, in its place put down what it would take in that genre to convert YOU to love it enough to have a favorite.

Have fun and as it's going on, dicsuss the stories. Agree with the picks or disagree etc..

1. Romance
2. Drama
3. Suspense
4. Sci Fi
5. Alternate Universe
6. Comedy
7. Visual
8. Slash
9. Dramedy
10. A story that might not necessarily fit one of the categories above
11. Action
12. Short story
13. Fantasy
14. Series
15. Best Overall Fanfic

Okay, finally filling this out!

1. Romance
"Cover Me With Dreams" by Heidi
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9184
This fic has two dynamic characters who are as strongly-written individually as they are as a couple.  It tells the story of their relationship and its journey from friendship to something more in an interesting way, by alternating between the past and present.  In that way, it works in the back story while moving the characters forward, and the transitions are seamless.  The writing is exceptional.  Also, even though it's a Nick story, the other guys are in it a lot, as it sort of tells the story of the Backstreet Boys, too.

2. Drama
"Something Beautiful" by Pengi
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10154
This was the absolute hardest category for me to just pick one story, because it's my favorite genre, and I have so many favorites!!  So I'm just gonna go with a more recent favorite.  A lot of us experienced "Something Beautiful" last summer, as Hannah was writing it, and as everyone I talked to agreed, it really is "something beautiful."  (LOL cheesy, I know.)  I consider this a must-read for Frick/Frack girls like myself; it's a wonderful bromance about a special roadtrip Nick and Brian take together.  There's a lot of humor in it, but at its heart, it's a drama, due to the reason for the road trip, the different characters' reactions to it, and the secrets they keep from each other.  Wonderful story!!

3. Suspense
"It Stays With You" by Mare
http://accidentalchaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=3154
I had a hard time with this category, too, because there are a lot of great suspense fics I love, but the reason I picked this one is that it's not your average suspense.  Most BSB suspense fics are either stalker stories or kidnapping stories; this one has the feel of both to an extent, but isn't really either.  It starts with brutal attack on two of the Backstreet Boys, but a lot of the true suspense is psychological in nature.  It's one of those stories that will keep you guessing, and the end will surprise you.  Plus, it has some fantastic imagery - I can't think of this story without picturing lobster claw hands and the word "mine."  Mwahaha!

4. Sci Fi
I couldn't think of a sci-fi that felt appropriate for this; I have read a few, but don't have any in my favorites.  I think most of the ones I've read have involved aliens and other planets and that kind of stuff... which is what I think of first when I think sci-fi and, honestly, why I don't read much sci-fi.  It's weird, because I do find outer space and aliens interesting and like movies about aliens, especially if they're scary, but I've never gotten into that kind of stuff as BSB fanfics.  So for me to read a sci-fi, I think it would have to not be so "out there" and more grounded in science on earth.

5. Alternate Universe
"Between the Lines" by Carrie
http://www.tinylittlerumors.net/storycart/btl/index.html
I was not a fan of AU at all when I finally made myself read this story for Mare's old fanfic discussion group, but this is the one that changed my mind and made me more open to them, because everyone who ever told me this story was worth reading was right!  It stars our Boys as professional baseball players.  While the stage may be different, the players are the same - they're still our Boys, and Carrie does a great job with their different personalities and relationships with each other.  Great bromance, lots of laughs, and oh yeah, tears too!!  I always feel like rereading this story during baseball season; it's really something special.

6. Comedy
"The Backstreet Baby Series" by Amanda
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/bsbbaby.html
I used to read a lot of humor stories, but almost all of them were spoofs making fun of BSB and other stuff - shows, movies, NSync.  Pretty juvenile humor, but funny nonetheless.  This trio of short stories stands out as being my favorite comedy fanfics that aren't parodies.  They take place around when Baylee was born, but they're more about the guys than Baylee, and they're hilarious!  Great for a fun, quick read.

7. Visual
I've read visuals before, but none stands out in my mind enough to put here.  I'm not a fan of the genre.  If you want good sex scenes, "Cover Me With Dreams" has them, in the context of an actual story about a couple you actually come to know and care about.

8. Slash
Got nothing here either.  I don't know what it would take to get me to enjoy a slash.  No sexual abuse or stupid nicknames is a good start, though!

9. Dramedy
"Just One Kiss" by Pengi and Evergreenwrite r83
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10411
This story is the epitome of a dramedy:  it's about Nick in a coma, yet it's HILARIOUS!  Go figure LOL.  What I loved about this story was the inherent drama/angst with the scenario of Nick on life support, mixed with the comedy of his spirit bugging the crap out of Kevin to keep him from letting them pull the plug.  Any story that can make me laugh (a lot) and cry (a little) gets two thumbs up in my book!

10. A story that might not necessarily fit one of the categories above
"Come Together" by Izzy and Cecilia
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/cometogether.html
This is just an old fanfic that I think every BSB fan should read.  It tells the story of how our Boys came together and does it beautifully.  If you're looking for a fun, feel-good group story that will give you that warm and fuzzy feeling of Backstreet Pride, this is the fic for you!  If you've never read it before, please do!!!

11. Action
"Survivor" by Cecilia and J-Kat
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/survivor.html
I struggled a bit in finding a good one for this.  I tend to lump action and suspense together, but none of my favorite suspense stories are really all that action-packed.  This is a good, classic action/adventure story, though.  I was thinking of it just yesterday because Steph's new story "Save a Prayer" reminded me of it.  It's about BSB and *NSync competing on a celebrity edition of Survivor - it was written in 2000 or 2001, when all of that was still culturally relevant LOL.  It's actually a really good story, especially if you like Survivor or similar shows.  The game aspect of it is entertaining, but there's a lot of personal drama that comes into play, and it's pretty suspenseful, too.

12. Short story
"Documentaries" by Izzy
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/documentaries.html
I don't rave about many short stories just because I don't usually have as strong an emotional connection to them as I do a novel I've invested more time into reading, but this is a good one.  It was written during the hiatus between B&B and NG and fits our worries about the direction of the group at that time, but it also ends up being one of those feel-good, KTBSPA type group stories.  It'll make you go "Aww..."

13. Fantasy
"On Nightingale Hill" by FiliKlepto
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8279
I think I first read this story on someone else's recommendation, and I got sucked right in!  I've never been a big fantasy fan, with the exception of Harry Potter, but one thing I liked about this story was the fact that, even though it takes place in a different realm, it's not actually AU - Nick starts out as himself and ends up in this other world, with amnesia, and discovers it along with the reader.  This story is exceptionally well-written and super creative.  I just wish it were updated more often!

14. Series
"Swollen Issues" by Carrie and Swenglish
http://absolutechaos.net/viewseries.php?seriesid=117
I am not a big fan of series, I realized as I was looking through my favorites for suggestions LOL.  I really only have two favorites, both by the same author, and since this is the only one that is completely posted, it wins by default.  If you like angst, medical drama, and Nick torture, here are 228 fun-filled chapters of it!  If you don't, stay far, far away from this series LOL.  I love it, though, and was totally addicted to it as it was being written, and it provided me with a lot of inspiration, so there you have it.

15. best overall fanfic
"Where Can We Go From Here" by Whitney
http://www.angelfire.com/ky3/perfect_fans/wcwgfhintro.html
I posted about this one in the fanfic survey thread, but here goes again.  Although it's a tough call, this is probably my favorite fanfic of all time because it's such a great group story (again, the Backstreet bromance factor), and it's definitely a drama, though it has some comic relief, too.  It's an old story; I first read it in early 2000, and it brings me back to the Millennium era, when the Boys were on top of the world, and I was a teenybopper who had just discovered fanfic and spent every moment I could reading it.  Despite the fact that its premise is the bus crash cliche (which is probably only a cliche because this story did it so well, it got copied) and it has some cheesy scenes (Chapter 11), I think it still holds up as a great story!

Wow, thanks for the It Stays with You mention, Julie :) I'm still working on this survey. I have some picked but am struggling with others to just narrow down to 1. I agree with what you said about Between the Lines and I had totally forgotten about Come Together. I LOVED that story so much and now am torn where it needs to go on my survey.

A category I have forgotten until right now is short story. I just added it to the list, so if you guys have a favorite, add one on. Also thanks for adding links to the stories. I'm not sure if i'm going to do that or not because of laziness and being on a computer that I do not have all that many sites bookmarked on. LOL

Short story, action, fantasy and series.

Here's mine, took a long time to narrow them down and knowing me, I'll have forgotten some that I really loved!

1. Romance
Ray of Hope by Erika
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9205&warning=5
What I love about this story is that it's not your typical romance where the characters are perfect and fall in love instantly.  Raidyn is a slightly overweight girl who's taken a job cleaning for the Doroughs.  She meets Nick who is a complete asshole and judges people merely by appearance.  Somewhere along the way they fall for each other, but there are lots of twists along the way and I looked forward to every update!

2. Drama
Curtain Call by Julie
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10159
This story is just so well written, it's so believable and will have readers on the edge of their seats wondering what's coming next.  It's about Nick (but has all the boys in it) who finds out he's ill and does everything he can to hide it from not only the public but the boys as well.  I won't say anymore but recommend that you read it if you haven't already.

3. Suspense
What Lurks Around The Corner by Mare
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10130
Set before the boys hit it big, this story had me thinking and on the edge of my seat whilst I read it.  Nick is recalling events from his past which leave him not knowing who he really is.  There are so many twists along the way, you don't know who to trust!

4. Sci Fi
Whatever The Night May Bring by Mare
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10473
The boys take a plane to do some promotion but things are not as they should be when they land just a few hours later!  They land to find the world not as they left it.  People are in hiding, buildings are burning and the boys have no idea why.

5. Alternate Universe
Song For The Undead by Julie and Rose
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9551
The year is 2012 and the world is at war.  Some kind of airborne disease strikes and before long there are only a handful of survivors standing.  This is the story of them facing the challenges thrown at them as they struggle to get by in this very unsettling new world.

6. Comedy
Only In My Dreams by Jen
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=10247
In this story Brian falls asleep and finds himself dreaming of a mysterious girl who runs a cup cake shop.  There are so many laughs and non-typical Brian behaviour in this that I was often laughing out loud as I read it.

7. Visual
Casual by Darby
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8947
The sex scenes in this story were so hot but also really well written and fitting within the story.

8. Slash
Only read one slash story and it wasn't BSB (although I did stumble upon one before I realised that slash was not the horror genre I'd thought it was, lol).

9. Dramedy
Life According to Baylee by Kristal
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8958
I don't usually go for stories about Backstreet kids, but this story is one of the exceptions!  It's set a few years in the future with Baylee being looked after by Nick after a tragic accident which killed Brian and Leighanne.  There are tears and laughter along the way and plenty to keep the reader's interest.

10. A story that might not necessarily fit one of the categories above
Not Your Average Cinderella Story by Kelly
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8205
OK, so it does fit romance but as the title says, it's not your typical kind!  For a start it's Howie romance which doesn't come along too often, and Kelly has done a great job on making the reader really get into the story and feel for the people within it.  There's lots of tears, laughter, suspense and romance and I loved it.

11. Action
Sinister Devotion by Erika
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9374&warning=4
This is an AU action packed story featuring all the boys but focusing on AJ.  AJ is a hit man going by the name of Jack, and his only love is his car...until he meets Crystal.

12. Short story
Still trying to think of one!

13. Fantasy
On Nightingale Hill by FiliKlepto
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8279
Nick finds himself alone in a strange place where every house looks the same, yet is empty.  He finds a little girl who possesses strange and wonderful powers and together they begin a journey towards a far off castle which hopefully has all the answers.  Great story which really sucks you in, just a shame it's not been updated for ages.

14. Series
The Broken Series by Julie
The series begins with Broken in which Nick is diagnosed with cancer and battles for his life, he meets fellow cancer sufferer Claire and together they help each other through some tough times.  In By My Side, it goes further into their relationship and life after illness (I've not finished reading yet though).  Excellent writing!

15. Best Overall Fanfic
This is really hard but I'm going to say Ground Zero by Chaos
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=8217
It's not your average kidnapping story and had me in tears along the way and also on the edge of my seat in suspense.  I would love to see the sequel updated and finished.

This was a lot harder than I thought it would be. LOL But I have finally come up with my list. Sorry I was so longwinded.

1. Romance - Broken by Julie
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=5354

I know that this isn't really classified as a romance but for me this is as romance as I'll allow myself to get. What I loved so much about this story, besides how well written and angst ridden it is, is that there are so many layers. One of those layers is a romance layer. By the time it gets to that point in the story though, you are already so invested in the characters that it doesn't matter. Clare is a strong female character that can stand alone and that was enough to keep me interested in wanting to know more about her and also how her relationship with Nick would turn out. As someone who doesn't like romance and is trying to convert people who feel the same way as me, this would be a great read, although I don't know anyone who actually hasn't read it yet. LOL

2. Suspense - Snapshots by Jennifer Stevens
http://classics.backstreet-bauhaus.net/archive/jennifer.php?snapshots

Okay I know that all I do is gush about Ground Zero and how incredible it is so you're probably all WTF? about this pick, but the fact of the matter is, I knew someone would have it as one of their favorites already so I decided to go with another classic that some might not be as familiar with. This is a suspense story that is told through the eyes of 4 out of the 5 boys when Nick suddenly goes missing in Washington after leaving AJ at a nightclub. Jennifer no longer writes BSB fanfic. I'm not sure if she writes fanfic at all anymore but she is without a doubt, one of the BEST writers out there. Her descriptions of the boys emotions are awesome and the best part about this is it's a suspense without there really being any suspense if that makes sense. There are so many fantastic suspense stories out there from Ground Zero by Chaos, Mind Games by Amanda, Under Pressure by Izzy to Scared of Reality by Susan but if you want to read something completely different, check this one out. (and yes, that was me cheating to name more great recs lol)

3. Drama - Leaving on a Jetplane by Izzy
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9873

I miss Izzy in this fandom. Her writing style is so unique. This story isn't a sunshine and rainbows story by any means. From the get go she paints a very unhappy Nick and an AJ who is ambivalent about everything. It's pretty much about just the two of them and how they are coping with fame. It's full of raw emotion and angst when they both decide to run away from it all to decide if life is worth living. Garden by Louise, Where Can We Go From Here by Whitney and Inner Hell by Jenna were all close seconds! (yup, did it again! hehe)

4. Sci Fi - Yesterday's Blue Skies by Just Marina
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=2422

Maria and her lack of updates make this one tend to go unnoticed from time to time but if you take a moment and click on the link, you won't be disappointed. I am not a sci-fi fan and to be honest if Maria wasn't one of my favorite people on the planet, I probably wouldn't have ever even thought about giving it a try. Yes, I'm stubborn when it comes to my fanfic reading, which we all know and love about me. I have to use the word epic to describe it because like Broken, there are so many layers to this story with interesting twists and turns around every corner. The universe Maria creates for this one is a place I do not want to be in but I find I can't escape once I start reading it. Hopefully you'll feel the same way too.

5. Alternate Universe - On The Rails by Filiklepto
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=9453

This is another story I would have never in a million years clicked on if I wasn't judging it for an award. It's not only an AU which I am not a fan of generally, but a historical one and it pretty much only features one of the boys for most of it. It's about Nick living his life as a musician and getting to his locations by hitching rides on trains, hobo style. Along the way he meets Carla who is also a fantastic musician and together they become an act. Because of the time period, to be taken seriously, Carla disguises herself as a mute boy named Carl. It's an awesome read and I hope it's finished one day soon!

6. Comedy - A Few Days in the Lives of the Backstreet Boys or Murphy MUST Have been Thinking about Nick when he wrote those Laws by Marly
http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/dreamcastle/marly01.htm

The reason this one is my pick: It's the only story I have ever read in fanfic land that has actually made me laugh so hard it brought tears to my eyes. Generally, I stay away from comedies because to me there's always a fine line between funny and stupid. This story is far from stupid. It's sweet and cute and just overall hilarious!

7. Visual -  I have only read one of these and that was the very first fanfic I ever clicked on. I'm STILL trying to recover! Never again lol sorry.

8. Slash -  I think no matter how old I get I am also going to be too immature to handle reading a BSB slash. For someone who doesn't like romance, and doesn't believe the boys are homosexual, it doesn't make sense for me to get into this genre at all.

9. Dramedy - Come Together by Izzy and Cecilia
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/cometogether.html

I agree with all that Julie already mentioned about this story. I think it's just an overall warm, fuzzy story which at times can be intense but most of the time you just feel like you're there in the moment with the guys as they are becoming the Backstreet Boys. This story really helped me get to know the guys when I first started out as a BSB fan and really didn't know much about them. I felt like I was watching a documentary.

10. A story that might not necessarily fit one of the categories above -- Finding Brotherhood by Mersey
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/mersey/fb.html

When people ask me to describe this story I have the hardest time. There is a common theme with most of my recs and it's layers. This one is the king of layering. There is SO much going on that it would take a long time to even begin to explain. The reason it landed here is because it could pretty much fall into every category above. Long story short, it's mainly about the bond that the guys share told through an intricately woven plot. lol Mersey is an incredible writer and we miss her in fanfic land. If I had to pick one story that bests describes why it would be this one. Check it out!

11. Best overall fanfic - Can You Keep a Secret by Kat and Amy
http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/brain_candy/secrettabcon.html

Love love LOVE this story! I'm not really a person who will go back and reread things a ton of times but this is one of the exceptions to that rule. When I feel like I'm losing the 'guys' I tend to go back and read this one. It revitalizes me. It's a warm, fuzzy story with a dramatic flare. It mainly centers around Brian and Nick and the special bond they share. To me, it's the best Frick and Frack story out there. All the guys are very important and featured as well. It's a medical drama set shortly after the time that Brian had his heart surgery.

12. short story - Documentaries by Izzy
http://www.dreamers-sanctuary.com/dwlyn/documentaries.html

If I didn't pick Can You Keep a Secret as my favorite overall, this one would have been the second choice. It's a short story but in Izzy land it's not really all that short lol It's a dark story told through AJ's POV about a documentary Nick was making shortly before he has a car accident. Excellent read!

13. Action - Seven Days by Refuse 2 Lose
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=6728

This story has it all. Drama, comedy, and of course, action. All five guys are equally important and the storyline really keeps you wanting to read more and more. I read this story in one sitting which is very rare for me and my short attention span. When it was done I was sad, but then that sadness turned to joy when I saw there was a sequel. On The Run by Mersey was my close second. Both having to do with bus mishaps but turning into so much more!

14. Fantasy - I have read a few but I can't honestly say any of them were memorable enough for me to recommend them to you. I'm not sure what would make me click on a fantasy and read it all the way through with excitement. If and when it happens, I'll let you know.

15. Series - Swollen Issues by Jenna and Swenglish
http://absolutechaos.net/viewstory.php?sid=5638

This was the first series I ever read in fanfic land. Swollen Issues was one of the first stories I ever read as a new BSB fan. It saved me from never wanting to click on a fanfic ever again after the visual debacle. The title didn't help mind you lol I was so excited reading it, I stayed up for hours just wanting to know what happens next. Jenna and Swenglish really take you for a ride on the angst bus with this one. They are so good with the medical stuff that you actually start thinking it's real. When it was all over I was sad and to me that's the mark of a great series.

I modified my post with the new categories, and I see I picked some of the same ones you did, Mare!  That obviously means they are awesome, to be double-recommended LOL.

Also, I'm glad you mentioned "Finding Brotherhood"; that's another one I consider to be one of those warm-and-fuzzy KTBSPA type group stories.  I haven't read it in forever, but I enjoyed it a lot when I did.

And thanks for the Broken mention - I laughed at the category you put it in, but I'm flattered it's the one "romance" you'll read. :)
