Hello ;D
Yes, it's me. I know there will be a few of you all ::) "Are you serious? She gave herself her own month? Like Oh my Godz she's the worst person like ever!" But to you I say...eh? I deserve one just like everyone else.
I really have been hesitant about doing this seriously because I know how it looks but I was convinced otherwise so this month is mine. Obviously i'm not going to be my own Oprah because that would just be sad lol so Sarah and Rose are tag-teaming me this month. They picked this story so I hope you enjoy. It's not my usual suspense, someone is going to get slightly maimed type of tale but nontheless it's probably been the most read fic I have written.

Congratulation s, Mare! Obviously for any of the critics out there it was me that chose Mare but I'm a lazy bum and forced Mare to intro her own story and that's how it works in AC Mod-land.
Here's my question: Is there a chapter, or moment, in the story that you now wish you could go back and change?

1) Tell us one thing about your story that no one else knows?
Hrmm, i'm not sure if there's anything overly secretive about it. What people might not realize is that I got the title from the unreleased song Memories? There's a line saying oh I... I'd do it all again but it sounds like Why and I thought that would make a great name for this story. I'm usually not big on taking lines from songs and making them into titles but I did it this time.
2) How long did it take you to write this entire story?
I'm usually really bad at remembering this stuff but for whatever reason I put in the actual summary of the story when I started posting it and that was Sept 2005 and I finished it shortly after Kevin decided to call it quits so I guess it took me at least a year and a half to finish it. It was my longest story by far.
3) Give us a summary different from the one you have posted on AC, with a few more spoilers to make people tune in.
I actually think this is one of the only summaries I really like that is the most accurate lol but I shall try! *damn me and my hard, Oprah like questions!*
Come join the guys as they meet after their long break and work together on creating Nevergone. Listen to Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick's opinions on things as they get set for the next chapter of their lives and see how they deal with all the roadblocks along the way? How is that?
4) If you could cast this story as a movie who would play the main roles and why?
Because this is pretty much set up to be like a documentery I can only see the guys playing themselves. If this was a different story i'd be more creative with my answer, but for this one, there really isn't one. lol
5) Have you ever thought of giving up on the story and if you did what made you continue to work on it?
This was the first time I really began to struggle with updating a story and there were times when I thought I wouldn't finish it, especially in the midst of all the Kevin drama happening, but I also know I am not a quitter so I was pretty sure I would finish it eventually.
6) What was your writing process? (Outline, make it up as you go along, the characters wrote it, I am Tonja and plagerized lol)
I just wrote as I went along. I'm not big on outlines although because I got a lot of this stuff from things that actually happened, I did find myself doing a bit of research. The guys usually just posess me and write their own parts anyway. lol
7) Who was your favorite character in this story and why?
I loved AJ in this one. I usually really struggle with him but he was a lot of fun to write for this one because I enjoyed his optimism throughout the recording process.
8 ) You had to know this was coming, who was your least favorite?
I suck at Howie. I had the HARDEST time with him for this one lol
9) Are all the boys in this one? If not why did you choose to exclude them?
Of course they are!
10) If we like this story...then we'd love what story? (Could be by you or someone else) and obviously tell us why lol
I think if you liked this one, you'd enjoy Come Together by Izzy and Cecilia because it's a very similar idea but their's takes place at the time when the guys first met.

YAY Julilly asked me the first question!!
I think if I could redo anything, I probably wouldn't have harped on the Nick and Paris issue so much. Maybe if I had waited a little longer to write on it, most likely I wouldn't have gone on and on about it lol but at the time that whole thing was SUCH a mess that I felt like it was a pretty important part of the Never Gone story. In retrospect, it probably wasn't.

See, that's interesting, because I always thought you got it from Just Want You to Know LOL. I know that line from Memories too; I guess I've just listened to JWYTK a lot more. I always sing that line to myself when I see your story title LOL.

I do the exact same thing, I start humming JWYTK lol.
So Mare, the direction you took definitely was the Paris route, but I personally did think that was a huge part of the NG story because that was big, and it threw Nick into a light that many had never seen him in, running second to a bigger star and then being accused of horrible things.
I'd have an oprah question but I gotta hurry to work, but I will have them later, promise!

Hmm...those are all very interesting answers. Initially, I was convinced that the title came from Memories but then I heard that line in JWYTK..and then I was all confuzzled, so thanks for clearing that up :)
Okay, so my first Oprah question: I know you're not the biggest Brian fan and I personally think you did a great job portraying him in the story...but was it hard for you to put aside your personal bias and write from his perspective? Or do you think that parts of your annoyance with him in reality tended to sneak through in your writing?
lol That was a rather long-winded question, but I hope it makes sense. I just remember being curious about that after I found out that he annoys you often. It's probably an awful question but I'm just getting started on my Oprah-ness, so forgive me :)

Aww that was a great Oprah question Sarah. Don't sell yourself short. I'm still not picturing the part in JWYTK that is says that lol i'll have to pull Never Gone out and listen to that song again. It's been a looong time.
To answer your Brian question. I actually love Brian to death. Parts of his personality annoy me but honestly it's usually when he's accompanied by his wife when he's that Brian I don't enjoy and since that's how Nick saw him it was kind of easy for me to play that off in the story.
I found it really easy to put any bias aside and write Brian because I know he loves his wife and what he does. I know those parts of his personality that may drive me crazy is just the way he is so it was kind of easy. Besides like I said, I usually have the other guys see some of the things he says and does in my point of view.

popping in really quick to say congrats Mare! But I don't have a mouthful yet to say, well I do, I just don't have the time to post it all right now.
All I will say, is that I FINALLY started reading this one just like last week and have seriously fallen in love with it!
If you haven't checked it out yet, which most of the AC veterans probably have because I swear I'm the last one finally getting around to it. (yes Mare, it's ok to smite me for being slow), but to all the newbies, this is worth the read! Go check it out!
And I'll be back with lots more to say! I've been quiet in the feature thread for a while now. I guess it's high time I cause a ruckus again.

Oh and another, what gave you the idea to have AJ and Nick actually share a place in the story?

I read this question last night but had to sleep through to figure out the answer and then it dawned on me, that is was all VH1's fault.
I was so horribly disappointed in their Behind the Music they did on the guys it made me want to document things myself lol Seriously, they didn't tell us anything we didn't already know. Brian had heart surgery, the guys were jerks about it, Howie's sister died, blah blah blah we knew all that.
There was SO much they could have touched upon but didn't especially all the drama with Nick during the solo time and what really happened during Aj's rehab. So I pretty much decided what I wanted to do was write something in real time-ish about them going into the studio again after all that drama because there was SO much drama back then I always thought it would make a great story.

Thanks Rose! I shall answer the Nick question now, the others I will have to actually think about. lol
I made Nick clingy because I really feel like that's how he would be. I have always thought there is this very vulnerable, child like side to him and we have all seen the child like part but in interviews and things he says about relationships that, I don't know, for me I think he is the type of boyfriend that if he really is invested in you 100% and I think he was with Paris, he would be the type to do whatever that person wanted. He'd want to be with them 24/7 and would be scared to lose them.
Again, that's just how it looked to me. He seemed really into their relationship and i'm sure she played mind games with him about how he was nothing without her, because sadly, I think that is who she is.

^ oh and the AJ and Nick question, in an interview One of them briefly mentioned that they were staying together when they first got to LA so I decided to play off that idea and make them actual roomies! LOL

They totally kept all the controversy out of the story, which completely detracted from what we all REALLY wanted to know. I'm glad we got this story out of your frustration from that, though, so YAY for crappy VH1! lol

My favorite scene to write without a doubt was the whole Nick falling out of a window scene. Not to sound like a huge dinkus but I was laughing so hard at what I was picturing visually that I was crying. I wish it translated to half as funny as it looked in my head, especially when the guys were on the phone at Brian's with his little apron on. lol
Favorite line is a hard one because you know how bad my memory sucks lol but I think there was a reference to Kevin's eyes falling out of his head and they'd still be rolling at Nick? Or something like that. Or AJ singing lalalala I touch myself lalala lol I enjoyed that too.

OMG! That part is so freakin funny and random. And doesn't he land on a sandwich? :D For some reason. I love AJ and that van. It's just so funny to picture and then having poor Nick ride in it hungover!

uh... actually my list is surprisingly short. It's really just a maybe I should read more... thing. but I made a goal for myself that I was going to read more and so far this year I've already read more books than I had probably in my entire life. So now I'm caught up in this Sarah Dessen book and want to finish it before I get back to the fan fiction but I'm slow, and your story is long, so maybe I should read more of yours first. I should go read about Nick calling up Paris.

I think I have mentioned that while I was writing this, Kevin decided to up and quit the band? lol yeah that was rough. It was hard because prior to him doing that I had this whole idea of ending things with him being grateful he was doing what he was doing and wanting to keep going forever like he had said in an interview once *sigh* but after that I had to rethink his whole attitude towards the end. That for me was the toughest thing, because I was pretty blindsided by his leaving the group and because I love me some Kevin, it was hard to write that part of him.

As far as chapters, they were all pretty easy actually. I guess there were tough elements only because sometimes I felt like some of them (Howie mostly...sorry Howie) didn't have a whole lot to say so I felt like I had to babble at times. It would have been so easy for me to just write entire chapters as Nick or AJ etc... but I didn't want to do that and ruin the whole concept, well except for the one chapter I did it purposely lol
And let's see, the hardest scene was towards the end. The actual release day of Never Gone was tough because there was so much I wanted to jam into that chapter and I also knew that I was not being accurate and that some of my diligent readers would be quick to point that out to me. lol. I had to kind of wing it though otherwise this story could have gone on forever.

First of all YAY to having a Mare story in the featured story of the month, esp. "Why" because to me the way you wrote it, minus some sillier things here and there, was exactly how I pictured some of those things happening. I especially enjoyed the whole B-day cake scene in the studio, the club scene and the aftermath of that with Kevin and Kristin, the push and pull with Brian and Nick's relationship, etc.

One of my favorite concepts of the story was that Nick and AJ lived together, and the fact that it actually happened is really cute, I wish I had heard that interview.lol One of my favorite scenes was the whole thing where AJ kicked Nick out at the studio, I literally felt that crappy feeling in my stomach that you described Nick as having in that story.
I totally agree with the way that the Behind the Music thing turned out as well, because I was so excited to find out all of the stories we had never heard before, and none of that happened. A) I already knew all of that stuff B) I felt that it could have been way longer, more in depth C) I thought it focused A LOT just on AJ and not really ALL of the guys. I was glad that they didn't bring up the Paris thing, but I thought there would be more about the BS that went on with Nick's family, and how the guys each dealt with themselves and each other during the height of it all.
I had some questions too:
- Do you really think that even during the beginning promo of NG that Kevin wanted to leave? It always seemed to me that he was enjoying himself until about the time they toured through Europe.
- How were you able to even remotely think about writing the beginnings of a Paris/Nick sex scene? (If there was a throw-up smilie I'd use it lol )
There were others, but I have to think about it. lmao

Did you find it difficult to research to keep this based on fact? Or did you just sort of go with what you already knew and wing it? lol

I was glad that they didn't bring up the Paris thing, but I thought there would be more about the BS that went on with Nick's family, and how the guys each dealt with themselves and each other during the height of it all.
I had some questions too:
- Do you really think that even during the beginning promo of NG that Kevin wanted to leave? It always seemed to me that he was enjoying himself until about the time they toured through Europe.
- How were you able to even remotely think about writing the beginnings of a Paris/Nick sex scene? (If there was a throw-up smilie I'd use it lol )

okay now to answer your questions.
I really didn't think Kevin wanted to leave, like I have mentioned before, I was blind sided by him leaving so no, I never felt like he wasn't into it. Luckily for me though, I wasn't finished with this story before he left so I was able to change things around to include some of those feelings otherwise the ending would have played out very differently.
I really didn't want to think about Nick and Paris having sex and I'm proud that for the most part, I pretty much got around it except for maybe that one scene which made me cringe. lol

Yay Mare! I started reading this at work today (I have literally nothing to do there since I haven't got my next contract yet... erm anyway..) and I have to say that I LOVE it so far! Did you find it difficult to research to keep this based on fact? Or did you just sort of go with what you already knew and wing it? lol
Aww yay! and nope, actually the research was a lot of fun. I mean who would hate having to watch interviews and listen to interviews? lol It was hard keeping it factual but I took a lot of liberties along the way, which you will see. I did wing a lot of it though, just based on how their personalities are.

Ok, I decided to reread the story and I remembered something else that I loved. It's hilarious the way you explain Backstreet time and how it's such a recurring thing. And even one of the wives (I think it's Leighanne) is explaining at one point how she doesn't get it! It's so true. Those boys and their Backstreet time. ::)

That was the other thing about BTM, besides AJ saying that Nick going solo was the wrong timing ( I really don't understand why they all got their panties in a bunch about that whole thing, they kind of treated Nick like crap and I totally didn't understand why) they really didn't talk about that at all, the reason for their break. They didn't touch on a lot of things (Lou Pearlman, tours, dealing with the fame, family life, the early days, etc.), but I think it was more for the less knowledgeable rather than the diehards. I think they need a part Duex. lmao Either that or the guys need to put out a documentary or something.
I wanted to hear more of the story from their mouths, but like you said, I think Nick and Kevin talked about a total of about seven times between the two of them. ::)

It's not like they don't have a relationship outside of the group, you could write about that. The guys on downtime visiting, or just work him back into the story as a "brother". Just because he's not in the group anymore, doesn't mean that they don't have brotherly relationship. Nick said in some interviews last year that they saw each other with the new baby, and christmas and superbowl, so they still have a tight relationship.
It was hard for me to write about anything because Kevin and Nick's relationship in the group was inspiring most of my stories. But then I started writing about Kevin being outside of the group, but still being involved with the guys and their lives. I really think he still is, esp. with Howie's Dad's health now, you know he's got be helping with that because he went through that himself. And he's always going to worrying about Nick, based on what we've seen, I don't think he could ever just shut that off. lol
It's a challenge, but it's fun to write it from that perspective too... Basically I'm just trying to get you to reconsider retirement. lmao

I get what you're saying and I do agree with you. I'm sure that Kevin is still a big part of their lives, it's just a part we don't get to see anymore. I was talking more along the lines of the other four. I don't feel that connection. Maybe it's because i'm not really as invested in actually tuning into the newer interviews or watching them together but when I do, I just don't get that 'we're brothers' vibe from them anymore. I feel like when Kevin went away, that did too. I feel more of a separation now like Brian and AJ vs. Howie and Nick. I know that's all about their radio interviews but that's how I also see the actual bonding going.
We'll see though, I am thinking of writing a crossover with Numb3rs and it would be more Au-ish maybe. I just can't see me writing in real time with them anymore. Maybe if I keep the stories pre Kevin leaving or go Alternate universe, but like I said, i'm not really all that into writing long stories about them anymore :(
I've always come from a semi realisitc and I say semi because *ahem* my stories are far from realistic most times lol but what I mean is as far as what's really going on in their lives. I come from that place. I've never been big on completely making something about them up like a fake girlfriend or fake babies etc... so because of my writing style it makes it difficult to write a present tense Kevin without feeling like i'm making him up, does that make sense? lol That was a very long babbly reply but i'm trying to avoid going out grocery shopping!

You know it wasn't so bad because I knew even though she would be in it, I also knew i'd barely write HER in it. It was always going to be more the boys take on the relationship so lucky except for a couple of scenes here and there, I barely had to worry about writing her. It was frustrating though because I hate her but it really was no different than writing Leighanne for me to be honest. It was actually kind of fun writing her as this over the top whorebag! :)

Probably a mix of two things. All the Paris and Nick stuff especially when that night club thing happened! And the interviews with Aj talking about his rehab experience and all the guys always saying how proud they are of him. Seeing those two boys going in such opposite directions was enough for me to get a lot of the drama worked up in my head.

And ya know I always wondered what Kevin thought too about HOC I bet he got a kick seeing Nick in the role Kevin was in with BSB. Cause when you think about how crazy Nick drove Kevin sometimes growing up and Kevin in essence raising him, it was kind of ironic, sweet and amusing to see Nick trying to do the same for his sibs.

Ooh that's another great question. Actually there is one majorly big thing i forgot to mention in this story that everytime I think about it I ugh! and that's the small matter of Nick getting arrested for a DUI. I had every intention of bringing that up because it did happen within that time frame, but not to blame the man once again, but when the whole Kevin leaving the group news broke out I think it side tracked me from including that. Other than that I think everything else pretty much came out the way I wanted it to for the most part.

I just thought I'd pop in and say that even though I haven't gotten through this story as fast as I thought I would, I am really loving it and think that everyone should read it!! Mare's writing is fantastic and she is soooo full of Backstreet cuteness that I just love it....
First of all I want to point out that the perspective changes are a very refreshing way to tell this story. I think that is what makes it seem like the story is really sucking you in to the guy's world. Mare is great at placing you right there in the middle of all the craziness so you get the feeling it's almost like a documentary as opposed to a story. I think it shows great insight into each boy and what their thoughts/feelings/concerns/insecurities/ and all those other things one might feel in that situation, might be. I mean who really knows how it all went down, but I think Mare has done an excellent job (from what I've read so far anyway) at imagining that situation, and I think she writes the guys very realistically. Maybe a little sweeter than they are sometimes, but I don't see how that hurts any, lol.
Seriously guys, this story makes me remember what it is I LOVE about the Backstreet Boys. And I love they way Mare portrays them. It's just a fun cute, yet emotional sometimes, story that can really tug on the heart strings and it definitely worth the read. I honestly cant think of enough good things to say about it, but I have to run, so I'll have to post more later. I just had to stop in right now even though I'm only on like chapter 17 so far, but I'm going out of town for a while and I wanted to make sure and gush about the awesomeness that is this story before the month is over and it's someone else's turn.
Yay Mare! and YAY WHY!!! (hehe and yay, It Stay's With You too. cause I love that one too.) And YAY for Mare writing another story! Good luck with it! Enjoy the rest of your month Two very big thumbs up from me! You totally deserve this month.

I didn't have a storyline worked out really. I just kind of went with the flow. Besides Kevin though, I can't really remember anything else that changed as the story went on. I pretty much just decided to keep it along the time line that they went on while creating the album.

The most dramatic parts to me were the ones that has Nick feeling distanced from Brian and seeing AJ taking his place because deep down inside, I have a feeling that really bothers him. :( I know it would bother me lol

Amen, I was so freaking ticked off cause all it did was show his LACK of support for Nick. AGAIN if we go back to when Nick went solo. We all knew it was Brian, blurryness and all, it hid nothing. It's because of the help of BSB fans his solo career even freaking launched.
The other major thing is how during his solo shows he's all for BSB (and singing songs like IWITW) but couldn't bother a ty in his liner notes of his cd. He didn't have to, but at the same time it came off very unappreciative since Nick did it on NON even with all the flack the boys (especially Brian) gave him. I miss old cool funny cute Brian :(

I'm not big on Christian music, I originally bought it because of my old love for Brian...before he became holier than thou. It was a last shot at him being my top fave. But I can listen to about half of the songs that are more open to interpretation, like "Angels and Heroes", "Gone Without Goodbye" "Welcome Home". I love Grace of My Life, I just have to force myself to ignore that it's about Leighanne cause it is a pretty song. I can't listen to the heavy religious songs on there lol. But it depends on how pissed off I am at Brian...and if he goes country more next, if I buy his next solo album or not.
I adore NON lol even with the cheesiness cause really that album is Nick, but you can also tell Jive held him back a bit. But even so, that album is random crazy cheesy Nick...and so I love it as such LOL. I'm actually curious about his next solo album to see the growth.
After hearing a studio of "Drive By Love", I'm really excited for AJ's album. If he ever gets it out. I'll buy that.

Amen, I was so freaking ticked off cause all it did was show his LACK of support for Nick. AGAIN if we go back to when Nick went solo. We all knew it was Brian, blurryness and all, it hid nothing. It's because of the help of BSB fans his solo career even freaking launched.
The other major thing is how during his solo shows he's all for BSB (and singing songs like IWITW) but couldn't bother a ty in his liner notes of his cd. He didn't have to, but at the same time it came off very unappreciative since Nick did it on NON even with all the flack the boys (especially Brian) gave him. I miss old cool funny cute Brian :(
Great Rose, now you're getting me all riled up again, but this time at them all! lol I just remember the whole Nick going solo thing and how willing they all were to go on without him. Brian being the catalyst for that one as well! I'm so glad in the end they decided to not do that because as quickly as my fandom started to take rise during that period, I would have stopped listening to them altogether.
I would buy a Kevin CD and listen to it as well if he ever came out with one although i'd be pissed at him for leaving the group to make his own CD because i'm still not over that! I kind of would prefer him to go back to broadway but in something else besides Chicago! lol
Now, if Brian ever did Broadway i'd be there with bells on because his voice is great for Broadway.
As much as I love Aj's voice I hate his solo stuff. I always have. In fact I hate the idea of them doing solo songs during the tour although at this point, it doesn't matter to me since i'm not getting to see them, but that would ber the time i'd take a bathroom break. Minus Nick's. lol

I'm gonna agree...not that Brian had to. But I am very surprised that he didn't even thank them or BSB as a whole. And then Nick did. Wow. And Nick's were really heartfelt too.

After reading thru this thread I can't tell you how happy I am to find others that feel the same exact way I do. Had I expressed these feelings on LD, I would have been ripped to shreads. But I agree with ya'll on the Blurry Brian subject. I was sooo pissed off when he didn't even MENTION the Boys in his liner notes. He wouldn't have or be what he is today without them. I understand he wanted something away from the group but so did Nick and he STILL mentioned, hell dedicated his album to them, in his liner notes. And DON'T even get me started on the HOC stuff....

I think many of us feel this way but yes I agree, this was a sore topic on the LD boards because let's face it, Nick bashing is allowed on there but when another guy is bashed it's like whoa! Really? lmao Maybe not as much now but at the time of this, besides AJ and Nick everyone else was untouchable.
I don't want people to think this is what my story is mainly about. Seems like more people are weighing in on this than the story which is okay but this issue doesn't even come up in this story. The Brian and Nick being distanced thing does though and It will in the one i'm writing on now. lol

I'll start by saying a huge thanks to everyone who participated this month, especially my two Oprahs Sarah and Rose. You guys did a great job. It'll be weird for me having to go back to asking the questions instead of answering them. I think I like the answering better than the asking.

I did start my new story of which I'm going to give anyone who looks in here a little sneak peek. Not sure when i'll start posting it. It has no title as of yet...

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”
Kevin shook his head a few times but then smiled, “Yes Nick…for the ten thousandth time, I think this is a good idea.”
“Because we haven’t done this in a long time…I mean a really long time…in fact, have we ever done this?”
Kevin pulled his backpack up on his shoulder, “I don’t think so, not just the two of us anyway.”
“Have we ever done it as a group?”
“You are supposed to have the better memory Nick, not me.”
“Well Kevin, my memory is sucking lately.”
“I can tell.” He said as he reached over and pat his younger friend on the back. It was a very last minute decision, to go on a camping trip. Since Kristin had the baby, he never let his new family too far out of his reach. One would think that would be a good thing but supposedly it was Kristin who was yearning for some free time with just the baby.
Kevin smiled to himself; the Backstreet Kevin would have not taken that well at all. If Backstreet Kevin was told to go play in the woods with some of his friends, he would have just about had ten cows after thinking his wife was trying to get rid of him so she could have her lover come over or something even worse than that. Backstreet Kevin was a real asshole sometimes.
Being out of the limelight was probably the best thing he ever did for himself. It felt like a huge weight being lifted off of his shoulders. Not to imply that Backstreet was nothing but a huge weight, but the fame part of it was too much. He was scared that he had made the wrong decision at first. Maybe it was too impulsive and later when he’d end up doing regional theater in the tenth revival of Chicago; he’d look back on the days when he had it all and feel a huge sense of regret. Luckily, the regret hasn’t come, only the satisfaction of feeling free to do whatever he wants.
He was very naive, thinking the fans would be sad but would quickly get over it and understand why he had to leave. He was wrong about that. At first it stung like a bee. Hearing how outraged the fans were. How downright hateful they were about his departure. They really resented him for everything and even went so far as to blame him if the new album flopped.
