Title: What if a BSB went to the temple?
Post by: MaggieW on January 05, 2008, 12:03:00 AM
I wasn't certain where to begin this topic, so I thought General Discussion fit it.  Being such a hot topic lately since Mitt Romney is running for president, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons, LDS, etc. for those unfamiliar with the correct name of the church) is under observation and discussion.  Our leaders have been putting out books and such to help illuminate understanding of our beliefs and knock out whatever criticisms and whatnot are out there about our church.

So my question is this...

What if someone were to write a story about one of our Boys falling in love with a Latter-day Saint?  It would be an interesting story - though I suppose it could go on forever, eh?  How accepting of our beliefs would they be?  Would any of the other Boys be opposed to the relationship (and perhaps the church itself for whatever reasons are available)?

Is anyone else on this site a Latter-day Saint or happens to know someone who is?

Any thoughts on this idea?

You're looking at the primary chorister for the Pleasant Hill 2nd ward right here. lol. (and we switch to 8:30 on Sunday. ewe!) I went to Ricks for a while and was married in the Oakland Temple.

I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure Brian would damn us all to hell if he could. I went to most of high school in Michigan (where they still believe we all have horns and sacrifice animals and such) and the born again christians and the southern baptists like HATE us. I have been treated so unkindly by many people of those religions that I'm basically afraid of them now (sad to say) and I would be terrified to tell Brian that I was LDS.

I've met Howie and Leigh a couple times and they know I'm LDS and my friend is really good friends with them. They respect our beliefs, but it's just not their thing. I think AJ would be curious and ask questions because he's sort of a soul searcher, and I think both Nick and Kevin would just be sort of indifferent as long as you didn't try to preach at them or anything.

I don't know how many people would be interested in a story about that, (besides us Mormons of course) but from an LDS standpoint I know I've thought about that before, I'm sure it would be as big an adjustment for them as anyone who converts to our religion, except they would have a lot more pressure because they're always in the media and the media would have a field day with news like that. Why do people gotta hate on us so much? lol

For some reason, I kept on reading LSD instead of LDS..  :-\

Other than that.. I have nothing to say in this thread, because I have no idea (oh well maybe a slight idea) of what LDS stands for..

LDS = Latter Day Saint (also known as a Mormon)

I went to school with a guy who is Mormon.  His religious beliefs weren't a big deal at all.  His friends ripped on him for being Mormon in high school, but it was in a good kind of teasing way, not to be mean.  He was pretty popular cause he was really funny.  Like, for the costume contest on Halloween, he showed up to school dressed as a workbench.  He had made a sandwich board type thing out of plywood, and he had actual tools attached to it - hammers and screwdrivers and drills and stuff!  He said it was SO heavy, but he clunked around to every class in it... but then he'd have to take it off so he could sit down LOL.  It was hilarious though.

Anyway... as far as a fic goes, I think it would depend on how the Boys reacted to dating someone with different religious beliefs than them.  Personally, I would have no problem being in a relationship with someone from a different religious background than me, as long as they were a good person.  I mean, there's religious beliefs, and then there's just basic morals.  The morals are more important to me.  Most religions have those in common, even if the spiritual beliefs may differ.  I am pretty open-minded about religion though; I don't necessarily follow even my "own" religion to a T.  Going with the LDS example, I may not agree with everything the Mormons believe, but I like a lot of their values.  But maybe it would matter more to someone like Brian, who is way more hardcore religious than I am.

Im agreeing with like all of Julie's post. :D

When I was a Senior in High School, the ASB (All Student Body) president was also LDS. And like the guy at Julie's school, his friends did tease him about it, in a nice way it seemed. The only thing I didn't like about him, and this has nothing to do with his religion, of course, was that he was kind of stuck up. *shrug*

And I think that values are more important. There's a difference between being religious and being a good person. And as far as the Boys go, the only one I really see having a problem with it is Brian.

Which is he Catholic? I've always wondered.

Anyway... Kevin might, given the same family background, but other than that, I can't really say. I see Nick asking questions, but not caring as long as no one's trying to convert him or anything. ;)

I don't know a lot about LDS myself though, just those commercials they show on TV.... Which probably sounds like a horrible thing to say... :-[

Ah.... Yeah, Baptist would make sense. Thanks Julie. :)

But I have a feeling that the Boys probably have a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy (so to speak) when it comes to religion, at least. I was going to say politics as well, but I don't think that's the case. :D

Yeah, I bet they do have a "Don't ask, don't tell" about a lot of things.  Being in show business, you kinda have to have an open mind, even if you come from a conservative background.  And Brian is so genuinely nice, I really can't imagine him being judgmental.  Maybe deep down he thinks everyone's going to burn, but he doesn't seem like the type to tell them that constantly. :D

I think it says his raised religion somewhere in his mom's book, but I think you made the mormon part up.

*goes to look it up in said book*

Although, at the moment I have a feeling he's probably "Christian" by name only.

If he ever did, I think I might just die laughing.

But yeah, show business usually has it that way with everything, though lately a lot of celebrities aren't putting politics up there.

It's kind of like being a sorority, we're not supposed to talk about the five B's, and that's usually what celebrities seem to be hush-hush about in a general sense. (The five B's being "Bills," "Bible," "Booze," "Boys," and "Bush.")

anyway, there are quite a few LDS at my school. Though, they don't seem to know much about their own religion, I have to say.  :-\ And I just mean the people at my school. None of the other LDS' I've met have been like that. *shrugs* I think it's because of all the drugs going around at my school, lmao.

Really?  I was home-schooled throughout high school, so I wasn't really aware of what people think about Mormons; I didn't even know what people say about us until I hit 18 and started attending Institute (weekly scripture study classes - for those who don't know) and we had a discussion on what we'd heard people say about us.  I sat there thinking "What?  Horns?  Devil's church?  You gotta be kidding.  We do so believe in the Bible!" and such like that.

You think that's how Brian might be, huh?  That would almost be interesting to see what happens.

I don't know.  All the same, we really shouldn't be so afraid to share who we are.  One of my favorite scriptures is Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

(See?  Proof that we do believe the Bible to be God's word just as much as we believe the Book of Mormon.)

If one of the guys happened to become Mormon and people turn away from the group because of it, I'd be very sorry to hear that.  I didn't stop listening to their music when I learned that Brian was Baptist and Howie was Catholic.  You go Boys!  These guys are talented and took that God-given talent and have become a fifteen-year phenomenon.

I agree.  Like I said earlier, I think morals and values are more important than religious beliefs.  There is no religion that can say, without a doubt, that they have everything "right," and personally, I don't think any one religion does.  It's all a matter of belief because no one really knows, so why condemn someone just because they believe something different from you?  That's ridiculous.  Believe what you want to believe, and let others do the same.

Yes, we believe the Bible and worship Jesus as our Savior, Redeemer and Son of God.  In fact the full, correct name of our church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The name in itself should help in the answer of whether we believe in Jesus.  And we believe that God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost - the Comforter, the Spirit, however you know it to be - are three separate beings and that God and Christ really do speak to us today.

And yes, there is hate and dislike for Mormons.  Especially in the early days of the church there was great persecution.  Joseph Smith, the prophet and founder of our church, had many attempts on his life.  One time he was even tarred and feathered *ick*.

Now, I have been curious as to what other Christian denominations, and other religions for that matter, believe.  What do Baptists believe?  Catholics?  Protestants, Presbyterians and Methodists?  Quakers?

I'm a Methodist, which is a sect of Protestantism.  I think the main difference, or at least one of them, between that and LDS is that Protestants don't regard Joseph Smith as a prophet and don't believe in his story about the golden plates and all of that.  We follow the teachings of the Old and New Testament.  I won't get into Catholicism, but I think Presbyterians, Baptists, and other Protestant sects believe the same stuff overall; they just differ in small areas.  Some are more conservative, stricter, or traditional than others.

I'm not going to pretend to be any kind of religion expert though, so I'm probably not the one who should be answering this question LOL.

Well I think a lot of the hatred of the LDS faith is slowly going away, especially in the parts of the world where it is more common, but there are some religions that still really don't like us.

I personally had mostly good experiences with people of all different faiths, and all of my friends used to tease me all in good fun, but I have also had my fair share of persecution for it too. I will always stand up for what I believe and will happily answer any questions people ask me, but like I said there have been a few really awful experiences in my life all with people of a couple religions that make me feel intimidated sometimes. Brian's religion happens to be one of those. *shrug*

I like to believe that not every Baptist thinks we are a cult and that we are horrible people who are going to hell simply for being mormon, but that has been the response I've gotten from every Baptist I've ever met.

And when I met Brian in person while he was nice, he was also very self righteous and seemed extremely judgmental.  I was actually very disappointed in him when I met him, much to my dismay, because he's always been my favorite. So I'd love to be able to say that I don't think he would act like the other's of his faith that I've met in the past, but *shrug*

oh well, I just don't worry about it and love the music.  :)

I don't think I've ever really read anything about LDS ever, but this thread is giving me a nice little intro to it.

I'm actually Muslim, which, like LDS seems to be, is extremely misunderstood for the most part. Most people, when they hear "Islam" or "Muslim" tend to think terrorist or something so completely foreign and crazy and are immediately against it.  To be honest, though, if people would just look it up, they'd see that Islam is pretty much the same exact religion as Judaism and Christianity--the major difference between the two is the question of the divinity of Christ. My best friend, who is Catholic, and I have great conversations about how all the stories about the prophets are the same in the two religions, right down to the names and everything (except for the whole Original Sin thing). But yeah...

I love reading and learning about all sorts of religions and the different sects that exist.  The aforementioned best friend was actually Protestant until she hit college. She's been working on the conversion to Catholicism, though, so I've learned lots from her about that.

That's so true!  I'm definitely not an expert on Islam, but I've learned a little bit about it in history classes in college, and from what I do know, it really isn't all that different.  Most of the mainstream religions are very similar in a lot of their general beliefs or their teachings about how to live your life.  It's just the little differences that separate them, and unfortunately, people of religions who teach you to "love thy neighbor" are the same ones who criticize and judge "neighbors" who believe differently than them.  It's hypocritical, and I hate it.

There was this quiz posted on LD not too long ago that you could take to find out what religion you should be practicing, according to your beliefs.  It was really interesting!  I'll post it here if I can find it again.

That's very true with Mormonism too. Most religions are all based around the same core values, we just have different beliefs in the higher power.  I think that any religion in your life is a good and worthy cause no matter which it is because no matter what the overall beliefs are, they're still just trying to give you a sense of purpose and help make you better as a person and live a better life.

That's what I hate most about religion in general. Can't we all just get along, seriously?

All the world shout write BSB fanfic, it'd be a nicer place. ;)

Seriously.  Where else can you have a civil discussion about religion without judging anyone (except Scientologists :D) or hurting feelings?  I like that even though we don't all believe the same things, we can talk about it without it getting uncomfortable (I hope no one feels that way right now anyway).

seriously. I think I'd rather judge a person on their morals rather than what their beliefs are. If I went around not being friends with people who weren't Muslim, then dude...what the hell am I doing on this forum?! I probably wouldn't be here.  I totally agree with you, Kelly. Most religions do try to teach people a sense of good moral conduct. It's the people that follow those religions that twist it all up.

sometimes, i wonder if God would be angry with me for thinking about the BSB more often than I think about Him.

Then again, there's a LOT of catty, opinionated, and downright mean BSB fans (see LD for examples), so I guess even that religion would have its flaws.

very true and its those people that tarnish the idea of religion in general. I hate to say it, but my own faith can often be some of the most judgmental people on the planet and can be stuck up at times, and its those people that make it harder for the rest of us. Its kind of like while Mormons will always have to live with the polygamy thing, muslims will always have to live with the terrorist thing.  Personally, I think Muslims have it worse off. I'd rather people assume my husband has more than one wife (which he doesn't  :D) rather than have them think I'm going to blow up their plane if I get on it.

I dunno what people YOU've been meeting *is extremely bewildered*, but that sucks that you got that impression from people. Personally, I don't think Mormons are horrible people, I just don't have the same beliefs you do. That doesn't mean you're horrible. And only God knows who's going to heaven and who's going to hell, lol. *shrugs* My 2 cents.

My best friend is Catholic and lives in Tennessee (Bible Belt, y'all), and she's had bad experiences with Baptists too.  I certainly don't think all Baptists are judgmental though; it just takes a few of the close-minded fanatical ones to ruin it for everyone else.  And in their defense, Catholics can be pretty jugmental too.  Christianity in general is full of hypocrites.  (Maybe there's some in all religions like that, but it's the crazy Christians I notice most here.)

No offense to anyone else's religion, but I do agree with this, Kelly. I think that's part of the reason why I don't wear the headscarf - i'd rather disobey my own religion than deal with all the looks, the questions, and the extra security checks at the airport. Maybe that makes me a bad Muslim, but hey, that's kind of what this world is shoving us towards...

but I completely agree with you about only God knowing who is going to heaven and such. That's why I try my best not to judge other people, though I'm far from perfect.  And I just worry about what I believe and try to live by it and if others want to know what I believe I'm happy to share, but I will never disrespect another religion for believing something different than I do.  Even my own brother decided he didn't believe in our faith and he has no religion at all. I honestly wouldn't know the difference between most Protestent denominations.  I consider myself Methodist because that's what I was raised as.  But I will say, I went on kind of a religion phase last year when I was researching Catholicism, and I had this moment of panic where I thought, "This isn't what MY religion believes, is it?" so I read up a little on my own religion too to find out if I was calling myself the right thing or not LOL.

I actually know a lot about my own faith and only the very minimal basics of anything else. I've always been very curious about other religions, but I wholeheartedly believe in mine so I've never really felt the need to look too much into the others. It's more so I can understand where they're coming from and what the major differences are. But I can't imagine being part of a faith and not understanding what those beliefs are. Maybe that's because being LDS is not just a religion, but really a lifestyle and following the mormon rules so to say is very difficult at times. If I didn't understand why I do the things I do, and believe that they're right, there's no way I would actually live by this religion.

That was my thing; I didn't want to find out that I was calling myself a Methodist when, really, some of the Methodist beliefs went against how I really feel.  That would just be hypocritical.  And the particular issue I was looking up isn't something they would ever teach us in Sunday School, so I really wasn't sure.

Maybe that's because being LDS is not just a religion, but really a lifestyle and following the mormon rules so to say is very difficult at times. If I didn't understand why I do the things I do, and believe that they're right, there's no way I would actually live by this religion.

That's pretty much how Islam works as well. It doesn't just govern what you believe but how you live your life according to those beliefs. 'Course, as with every religion, there are Muslims that pick and choose what they want to follow and whatnot, but, for the most part, Islam put down a set of guidelines of morals and legalities and Muslims follow them.

I always wanted to know about religions, not because i was insecure in my own, but because it's just so interesting how similar they all are. And, because, in the end it goes back to my anthropologica l interests in how and where and why these religions are so similar. LOL My little academic self coming out. I was almost a religion and anthro double major...

yeah. and I think it's pretty accurate in that respect too. Jehovah Witness was second my list and I've always thought there religion was very similar to mine. (I always talk to their missionaries when they come to my house. haha I've had a lot of interesting conversations with them. I guess it's cause I can't just send them away when my little brother is out doing the same thing right now.

My parents invite the Jehovah Witness people into the house to talk, but they never talk about religion. They've just become friends since they've been to our house so much. :D

lol Mormons are the worst at that! So many are born and raised as mormons, but then decided they don't believe or want to live by the guidelines of the faith. I think it's one thing to be baptized in the LDS faith and attend church occasionally, but it's an entirely different thing to actually live by the religion. Its kind of sad the percentage in our faith that do live by the standards set forth.

Except from maybe Dee (I'm not sure what religion you practice, if you practice one at all), it's given all of us what we actually are.

My mommy was raised Methodist and I went for a while, but... It's more like being nice to other people and that there's some sort of greater power out there, I just don't really know what it is. :)

I love learning about different religions. It's quite interesting to me. My brother and I are constantly asking my mom about other religions because she's studied some and we've asked her so many questions that now, whenever we ask her something, she opens up her little pamphlet from the coffee-table to find the answer, lol.

I think every religion has that LOL There are so many Muslims my age that are totally ignoring half the rules and living their lives the way they want because they want to be just like everybody else. I can understand that...to a point. I just don't understand how, when you're doing everything in total opposition to what a religion says, you can still say that you practice it...

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like, if you do it knowingly, it's just hypocritical.

Well, I think all modern religions are based on being nice to your fellow man, so as long as we all have that in common, anything else we choose to believe in our own right is not a big deal. :)

That's kind of like saying you're registered in a class, but you only go when you want.

It's silly.

But I can understand how people pick and choose, especially living in different envirnments and things like that.

This is a long one for being posted yesterday. Mostly because of the religious aspect probably.

I was raised Roman Catholic and have taken quite a bit of heat growing up. Mostly because people don't understand the worship aspects of the faith since it has the same root as many of the other religions.

As for Mormons, the only thing I dislike is the door to door attempt to preach. Though the ones I've turned away have always been curteous about me doing so. *shrugs* If I wanted to seek out a particular faith I would do it on my own. But hey Jehovah's Witnesses do the same thing so yeah. heh.

Pretty much I will discuss religions with people, I like to debate the details and play devils advocate (yes I will debate you against religion) but it's only to get people thinking and really learning how to defend their own faith (one guy told me I helped him grow deeper in his faith) LOL. I have been hated and called athiest for it ...heee.. I'm of the belief though you don't bash a religion and only can speak negatively about it if you know the religion deeply and not just think you know it.  I like to take aspects of lots of different religions and form my own beliefs off of them, that's how I am now.

As for a story about a boy falling for someone from LDS I think it would be interesting for the religious aspect. Quite a drama can ensue with a boy fighting his love for the girl because of her religious beliefs but that's the only reason he fights it because she is a perfect match for him. It would be quite intriguing though I could not write it since I do not know the Mormon faith well enough to write about it.

My husband was rasied RLDS *Ducks* It's called something else now but I've heard that Mormons HATE RLDS but he can't tell me about the split or how they differ.

aww. We don't hate the RLDS (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), we just get tired of people mixing the two up because most of the time people don't even know that the RLDS church exists. They just assume that they are the same religion and then everything the two different religions believe gets lumped together and it creates a lot of misconceptions about our faith. (as if we don't have enough of those to begin with  :D) But of course we don't hate them. I've only ever met one RLDS member in my whole life and she was a very nice person. It was interesting to talk to her and I learned they have a lot of the same principals as the LDS faith. Which makes sense because they are a branch off the faith, but they differ in the few core elements that we consider to be very important.

I didn't know it was called something else now?

Jason told me that LDS members were forbidden to speak to RLDS members. *shrugs* Doesn't matter he doesn't go to that church anymore, he has his beliefs but we'd probably go to some non-denominational Christian church if we wanted to attended services.

Yeah, I think it's called Community Church of Christ or something along those lines; I'm not positive.  I actually didn't know they existed until about... oh... maximum of five years ago.   Thus I never met anyone, to my knowledge, from RLDS.

I don't really know how they got started either other than this:  After Joseph Smith died and the majority of the Saints had gone to the Salt Lake Valley, Joseph's wife Emma eventually remarried.  I don't know when RLDS was organized, but they asked Joseph and Emma's son, Joseph III to lead them.  He said no two or three times before he finally agreed.  I think, also, that the leadership passed down through the family to today.

If any of that is wrong, please correct me, because I'm interested in learning how they differ from the LDS church.  Along with every other Christian church and other religion out there.

Well, from my point of view, that's just not true.  I know that there are people out there who take things to the extreme in different aspects of life.  That may be one such extremity, it may not.  I don't know.  If I were to meet an RLDS member, I would be fascinated to know their beliefs.

I got for my top three (I can't copy/paste from internet pages for some reason)

1.  Unitarium Universalism 100%
2.  Neo-Pagan 95%
3. Liberal Quaker 91%

I've read those and yes a mix of those is me. :-D

I was raised Roman Catholic and that was Number 25 out of 27 at 20% lol.

Here are my results...

1.  Unitarian Universalism (100%)
2.  Secular Humanism (96%)
3.  Liberal Quakers (87%)
4.  Neo-Pagan (79%)
5.  Theravada Buddhism (77%)
6.  Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (72%)
7.  Nontheist (71%)
8.  New Age (65%)

11.  Taoism (58%)
12.  Bahá'í Faith (48%)
13.  Orthodox Quaker (48%)
14.  Scientology (47%)
15.  Sikhism (46%)
16.  Jainism (46%)
17.  New Thought (45%)
18.  Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (32%)
19.  Islam (30%)
20.  Orthodox Judaism (30%)
21.  Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (26%)
22.  Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (25%)
23.  Hinduism (25%)
24.  Eastern Orthodox (23%)
25.  Roman Catholic (23%)
26.  Seventh Day Adventist (18%)
27.  Jehovah's Witness (6%)

And they are pretty correct.. I'm an atheist and the religions/beliefs above that, are pretty okay with everything you do or don't believe.. so yeah, it's pretty accurate.

I seriously don't understand though why my Scientology-score is higher than my Islam-score.. I know I agree with a lot more of the Islam-beliefs (for example the 'Zakat') than I do with the Scientology-things.. And I absolutely do NOT agree with Jehovah's (but don't worry,  I don't wish them any harm or something ;) ), so I'm okay with that one being on the lowest rank..

I'm Church of England... or Anglican, however you prefer lol Basically we are the laziest religion ever. That is why I love it so. Other Anglicans can protest all they want, it's true, we're in a religion a king made up so he could get divorced and we like to laugh at Catholics, that is the gist of it :P

Dude, I loved the late nineties and still do, but, as much as I adored the Boys then, I was not going to spend my money on books about them. My best friend got that fan book thingy by Andre Csillag, so we spent HOURS going through it.  The only thing I remember from it now is the picture of the As Long As You Love Me set. I think the caption was Brian: "the As Long As You Love Me set. Where I met the rest of my life." Or something cheesily, Brian-tastic like that.

Leonardo DiCaprio...bwa haha :P
