Title: The Reading Duel
Post by: mare on July 12, 2011, 06:17:16 PM
The Reading Duel

This is a reading challenge that was thought up in the romance debate thread. Since so many of us are so devoted to our genres of choice, this is a challenge to read something you might otherwise not even consider reading.

Here are the rules:

1) Send me your name in a PM with the words reading duel as the subject line

Once you do that, I'll be sending you a short survey to answer. Fill it out and return it to me and then you'll officially be one of the duelers.

By sending me your name, you are telling me you are willing to read someone's story and to offer up one of your stories to be read. This means you are also willing to get constructive criticism from the person who is reading your story and you as a reader are willing to give feedback to the story you are reading and that you promise to see the story through to the end. If you don't think you can handle doing any of those things, please don't agree to do this challenge. I am not one to tolerate flakiness and will call you out about it!

I'll be posting your surveys in the thread so this way you all can decide who you would like to challenge.

2) When I say the challenge is on, you may pick any of the duelers and challenge them to read your story and in return you have to read theirs.

3) The person you challenge may refuse but they have to explain why. It could be they have read the story already or have been challenged by someone else already.

4) You can be challenged more than once, it's up to you if you want to read more than one story. You don't have to, just remember you HAVE to finish reading it, so if you don't have the time please don't say yes to a thousand people.

5) You must give feedback to the person while you are reading the story. You can leave them on the actual story on AC but also in the thread from time to time. This may help people decide to read some of these stories.

6) When you are done, you need to fill out another survey about the story which will then post on the forum.

I know it sounds like a lot but it's really not. Long story/short...just read the story and review.

I hope you guys enjoy this and are willing to participate. We really need at least 10 people to have this work or make sense. If you are one of those people who keep insisiting people try something new, I expect to see you doing this one!

Have fun!!!

You have until Sunday (7/17)  to enter this challenge, because the sooner we start, the better.

LOL That's why I ask for chapter and word count for people like me who don't overly enjoy really long chapters or stories.

I don't mind long stories if I enjoy what I'm reading.

I think I know which story to put for mine now, something which the reader can get through pretty quickly :)

This sounds like an awesome idea Mare! I'm having the same issue Steph lol. I want to showcase something more recent, but I want it to be complete or have a good chunk of it done. Only issue is that the one I am thinking of is pretty long. I will submit it anyway though and we'll see.

If people really have a problem with long stories, they can always turn down the challenge.  You know me; most of mine are long too.  I'm not picking one of the super-long ones; I wouldn't inflict Broken or BMS on someone for this, but I'm in the same boat as you, Mel - all my recent stories that are far enough along to be appropriate are over 200,000 words.
Title: Re: The Reading Duel

I don't mind long stories. I pretty much read anything!
Title: Re: The Reading Duel
Post by: mare on July 13, 2011, 04:23:08 PM
I am going to start posting the duelers surveys but it's still too early to challenge anyone so please wait to do that until I tell you to. These surveys will give you an idea of what you might want to read. If you have read the story, you can't pick that author unless they are willing to change the story they have picked.

I agree! It's kind of like voting, if you aren't willing to put your money where your mouth is, stop complaining! Although I do think almost everyone involved in that debate will be participating.

Almost anyway. I think if you debated in there you should automatically sign up. I know some complained on twitter about "hating" (which confused me... lol) who haven't signed up though. And that's totally why I signed up. I'm very willing to put my money where my mouth is, suck it up, and get challenged with a romance.

One other thing about this challenge, when you pick a story to submit, it really should be done or close to done. It seems like most are but there is one ot two that aren't. If they aren't finished and only 10 or more chapters in, the person reading it might not really be able to give you what you want.

If you said you enjoyed reading those genres or your story was actually one of those genres I purposely didn't include it because then it wouldn't really be a reading challenge. LOL

Title: Re: The Reading Duel

Hey all!

Do not post your answers until I tell you it's time to start dueling. I'm just posting this to you early while i'm thinking about it. Can you tell I have a lot of time on my hands right now? LOL

Now that you have seen most of the participants (we might still be waiting on some) I want you to pick three authors you would like to challenge to a duel and why.

Once everyone posts their challenges, those people you are challenging, can figure out if they accept or decline your challenge. Obviously if you are first on each other's lists then it should be a no brainer.

Once you know for sure you accept a challenge, then i'll make it official by posting a this person versus that person. It's not official until I do that. We'll have a few days to sort it all out before you actually start reading the stories.

If you decline a challenge, you need to tell us why.

There are only a few acceptable excuses before you are called out as a wuss!

1) you have already read the story
2) you have already accepted a challenge by someone else
3) the story is on the list of things you said you wouldn't be interested in reading

Other than that....wuss! LOL

Remember DO NOT POST YOUR THREE CHOICES UNTIL I TELL YOU TOO!!!!

:)

Was your own submission any of those things? You don't get to read the same genre as you're submitting because it's not much of a challenge for you then lol

Yes, but the story was my collab 00Carter, which is Julie's too...and she's listed? Well...she is for AU anyway lol. Just looked again. That's where I got confused.
Title: Re: The Reading Duel

An oversight, I'm sure. Julie is no longer listed under AU. :)
Title: Re: The Reading Duel
Post by: mare on July 16, 2011, 10:30:14 PM
Actually it's because of what you said versus what Julie said, If you guys look at your surveys you didn't actually list the same genres for 00Carter. LOL

And I also took off things you said you liked to read as well so if you said you enjoyed reading any of those things they wouldn't appear by your name because like Isaid before, then it wouldn't be much of a challenge.

How long do we have to think about who we want to challenge? This may take some careful consideration on some of our parts.

Also you can add me to willing to read anything outside of fantasy or sci-fi as well if that helps any.
Title: Re: The Reading Duel
Post by: Rose on July 17, 2011, 12:37:42 AM
It's probably a good thing no sci-fi/fantasy stories are posted in this duel lol. Although, since it's on the other end of the spectrum from romance, I'm surprised some are opting out of it.

I bit the bullet and am willing to deal with romance :P LOL.

why are you intimidated? It's no big deal, believe me. I think you should participate. It'll be fun!

Mel, i'm going to be telling people to start posting their challenges by Tuesday but I won't really start harping on people until the end of the week. LOL

I have no idea who I want to challenge yet either, so you're not alone. I probably won't be ready by Tuesday.

So, I think there might be 3 more people then?

Let me know guys!

Erika
Kristal
Saka Steph

Anyone else? You have until midnight tonight to send me your PM

*raises hand* I did post a fantasy story LOL The fact quite a lot of people don't want to read fantasy worries me a little lol

Good job on the lists, Mare! :) I wanted to ask if you could add that I want to read anything except Slash and visuals but I see there aren't any visuals posted so I guess that's not necessary lol

I'll have to read through the lists and pick my 3 tomorrow. I already read Stockholm Syndrome (which I LOVED!) but I can't remember if I reviewed or not because I read it last year lol I made a start on 00Carter like.. 1,5/2 years ago but for some reason stopped. :/ Will keep that one in consideration!

1. Does the story have to be hosted on AC that you are submitting and

2. Is there a deadline to when the story has to be read, like say, Friday?

Title: Re: The Reading Duel
Post by: mare on July 17, 2011, 10:06:49 PM
I just tweeted this to you but i'll say it in here for everyone else as well lol

As of now there is no deadline but most likely i''ll say you hould be done by the end of August. I guess it really depends on how long the story you are reading is.

As far as being hosted on AC, that is ideal since it's an AC challenge but since I didn't make that a rule persay, it doesn't have to be. Makes the most sense though lol

I'm posting this here so I don't clog up the Engarde thread, since the duels will be posted there...and no one likes to weed through endless posts just to get to what the thread is really about.  *shakes head* Sorry...I had a Mare/Jullilly moment there.  :P (You girls know I love ya!  ;) )

Anyways... picking my three stories was pretty darn easy cuz every story falls into one of the categories I can't choose from...except 5, and of those 5, one is in a genre I marked that I preferred not to read...which leaves me with 4, and one of those I had started to read at one time...so BOOM...I'm left with 3.

LMAO! I just got a total kick out of that, for some reason, and had to share. :D
