AUTHORS - PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT SITE NEWS
« on: October 16, 2010, 06:55:20 AM »

Greetings authors,

During the summer the Mods made a point of doing a review of the rules. We posted the rules refresher here on the forums, and on the main page of the site.

The reason we did that was because over the last 12 months or so we’ve seen a lot of stories that are constantly breaking the rules that were set out back in 2003. Everyone is asked to read them when they sign up but that obviously isn’t happening.

No longer will we be accepting the excuse of “I haven’t read the rules” as a justification for why your stories don’t conform to them.

We’re not trying to hold back your creativity or keep you from writing but there are some serious issues going on; the most serious of all being spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Too often we have clicked on the Most Recent page and seen writers who don’t care about their fics enough to ensure their summaries are written in legible English. I understand that for many English is their second language, but that is why Microsoft invented spell check.

We’ve given warnings to authors about their spelling and they have been ignored. We’ve left reviews alerting people to the problems with their stories and they’ve been deleted. We run this site, it’s not a free for all, and if you don’t want to abide by the rules we won’t miss you when you’re gone.

That being said, enough is enough. If you don’t have a spell check – get one, or ask someone for help. Starting 30 days from today any fics posted with excessive mistakes will be deleted. No more warnings, we’re done being ignored.

We’re tired of being embarrassed to have people come on the site because it looks like we don’t support good writing, and we’re tired of authors leaving because of the decline in quality. We’re not saying you’re not all good authors, you may very well be creative and bright but no one will see that if they can’t read your story.

If you don’t like it, too bad for you. If you need help, that’s what the forum is for. We have given an endless amount of chances and offered resources that very few people have taken advantage of.

The rules, in summary:

1.   Don’t plagiarize.
2.   Proofread your stories!
3.   Offensive material will be removed.
4.   Use the right category.
5.   Include appropriate content warnings.
6.   Don’t abuse the script.
7.   Child porn will be removed.
8.   Don’t spam the site with updates.
9.   Banners will be no larger than 600 pixels total.

You can find the full detailed list of rules here: http://absolutechaos.net/fictalk/index.php/topic,2168.0.html

I am sorry if i am a bit slow, but the following rules need further explaining:
3.   Offensive material will be removed. "What exactly could be considered as offensive, since we already have enough warnings"
6.   Don’t abuse the script. "What do you mean by that? computer script like "bold and italics" or what? (so yeah this one shows how stupid i am but sorry again...lol.)"
8.   Don’t spam the site with updates. "How does that happen? people update their stories how can i spam that?"

Sorry again for the inconvinence, i just can't quite get these parts...

Something Baaaaddd is happening on Abosolute Chaos.

I don't know how many of you are into the musical Wicked. The sheep comments reminded me of when Dr. Dillamond is singing about something baaaadddd is happening in Oz. I know he's a goat, but the sheep comments just reminding me of that song. LOL!

In high school my friends and I would call everyone sheep because the would literally follow each other around and do everything the same. You're bringing back all my memories. LOL!

November 15th? Is that the day all stories that are breaking one of these rules will be deleted?

That's what those ava's are for. Ok, now that I get it, I'm cracking up. :D I read the first post again and I see that the people who broke one of those rules got a message/review. Phew! I was afraid that one of mine might be breaking some rules although I checked and I don't think (= hope LOL) I'm breaking any, especially the grammar/spelling ones, since I'm such a nazi when it comes to grammar and spelling LOL. When it comes to punctuation, I'm not sure but I don't overuse commas.

Just something off-topic, but on November 15th it's been one year since my first BSB concert. *sigh* Time goes by so fast, I still remember everything like it happened today. I missed my niece's 4th birthday because of that lol. I'll be there at her 5th one though so yay. ;D

I wonder how many stories there will be left after November 15th? (The date feels kinda spooky now Lol!) I noticed some stories with horrible use of grammar and spelling, already in the summary. I don't see how people think a story that looks like that should attract lots of readers. And I don't see how they can think the story is just fine with all the mistakes and stuff.

I have read through my summaries and all my stories are written in Microsoft Word. If anyone finds anything wrong feel free to let me know so I can start making adjustments to my stories and summaries. I really hope my stories are well written and follow the rules so please leat me know if anything comes up.

Believe me, if we felt you needed work, you'd know. The thing is, most of the people who have to worry about being deleted have been warned about breaking rules more than once.

Even so, you'll get a warning via a review before at least I, flat out delete you. Not sure if that's what Julily will do. The people who have actually been warned will just get their butts deleted unless things are fixed.

I think once a story or two has been deleted and everyone sees that we're not kidding, things wil hopefully start to improve. At least maybe people will actually take a minute and edit before they post.

If we get deleted, are we allowed to re-post after fixing things? I've been trying extra hard to be sure grammar is correct, but sometimes I still miss a couple here and there and I don't pick up on it until I'm re-reading my word doc.

Of course. And like Mare said, anyone whose stories are in question have already been warned as such.

We're not just going to start deleting things left and right without telling anyone why. Also, it won't be for the occassional here and there mistakes. Everyone makes those. This is for stories that are illegible, with no format whatsoever.
