That's interesting. My Grandfather, fought in France as well, and he met my grandmother, married her and brought her back to the states too. He never talked to us about the war though, he didn't handle it very well. My grandmother has only talked about it once, and it was to me surprisingly. In on story, she was living in an apartment building at the time, and the Germans came through, went to the building next to hers, blocked all the exits off, and then set the building ablaze with her neighbors all trapped inside. Your grandpa was right, war is meaningless.

Author's Response: That's so sad! ...It's really hard imagining brutality like that. Thanks for sharing your grandmother's story, too! ... My grandfather's story didn't end in marriage, unfortunately, because he never found the woman again. But I do have the picture of her that he carried in his pocket until the day he died. She saved his life by having him hide in an oven, of all things, when the soldiers came calling to find anyone who had escaped off Normandy beach. My grandfather earned a Purple Heart and several other medals during his time in WW2, but this was one of the only stories he ever shared. Like you said of your grandfather, he was always touchy about sharing it. That's partially why, in the story, Nick's memory is in the form of thought, not in the form of what he tells Brian. The memory was too personal to share a 2nd time. Claire alone heard the story.

Just want to say great story! I love the amazing use of description. :) At first it reminded me of the Time Traveller's Wife. Which was a really good movie - hot guy too! teehee

Author's Response: I LOVE THAT BOOK!! <3 The movie was saved only by the hot guy though for me after having read the book, LOL. But yeah, it's sort of similar to that. I borrowed a lot of ideas and concepts and images from books and movies that I like to create this mishmash of originality. Thanks for reading!! Glad you're enjoying the story!

Aw, this is very touching. I'm glad that he opened up to Brian and I'm glad that he is being very understanding. Very interested to see what he'll find out from Amie.

Wow... I don't know what I would do if I was Nick's position. I will admit I did chuckle at the idea of Claire pretending to be grandmother, but at the same time it is so sad. I mean how the hell do you not age, but your lover ages and every time you bring them around you have to explain that they are so and so relative? Great chapter once again, can't wait for me!

Author's Response: I'll admit the inspiration for Nick's lovers aging around him was inspired by the opening dream sequence in second Twilight novel, New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer, when Bella dreams she looks like her grandmother while Edward remains eternally 17. I felt like the idea needed to be explored more than it was, and that's what inspired Claire's aging in this story, and was part of the purpose for the revision from the original format HTSAL had developed in. :) Thanks for the feedback!!

I was so happy to see your name attached to a new story! Be I never read the beginnings of HTSAL, but t this...THIS is a GREAT story! I just started reading it yesterday and I'm all caught up. Gave me something to do during work..hehe. But I'm fully taken in by this story! I'm LOVING it. It's unique and that's hard to do these days.

I guess you answered Rose's age question (and mine) in this chapter.

I also let out a small SQEEEE!!! When I read that you were thinking of picking up STDFB3!!!!! Those are some of my all time fav fics!! I hope you follow thru with that idea cuz I can't WAIT to read it! You are a very talented writer and I can't wait to read more from you!

Author's Response: I'm definitely gonna pick up STDFB3, but I want to finish this story and post another one that I'm in the brainstorming phase of now before I pick it back up again. But I do have a storyline in mind for STDFB3...and I'm looking forward to picking up Nick's accidental-hero personality in that story. Thanks for all the compliments! :)

I have to say, this is one of the best written stories on here that I've read in a long, long time. I just love how everything is unfolding, the way he's breaking things to Brian, the way he's dealing with Amie and Claire. And I usually hate stories with original characters being heavily prevalent, but I'm loving this story, so great job.

Wow! What a powerful chapter. I wonder if Brian will react to the news as it really sinks it. And I love the reference to saving AJ. Good job :)
