CHAPTER 6

Haley Narrating

Ring. Ring.

Why do I always wake up to the phone ringing? It was 9a.m. I got like four hours of sleep. I could barely even form full sentences.

“Hello?”

“Hi Haley. It’s AJ.”

“Hey what’s up?”

“Last night I think one of you left your jacket at the concert. One of our security guards found it I guess. It’s black.”

“Well, that’s real descriptive AJ. What else does it look like?”

“It’s got like a zipper. And I think it’s got a sleeve. No there’s two of those.”

“Alright, you know what? New plan. I’ll just come over right now and see if it’s one of ours. Okay?”

“Okay, but we have a meeting at 10:45, so it would be good if-’’

“I’m coming over now. I’ll be there in half an hour.”

“Okay, sounds good. See ya then.”

“Bye.” Great. Now I had to get out of bed and walk to their hotel. God I hope I don’t see Nick. What would I do?

Nick Narrating

“You’re fucking lucky someone left a jacket at the show last night.” Said AJ. “Otherwise you’d never see her again. And I can tell you right now it’s not Danielle’s jacket cause it’s a youth medium.”

“I know. Thanks for your help man.”

“No problem Nicky.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“Ok Nicky. Bye Nicky.” Asshole. Okay, now I just had to figure out what I was going to say, where I should ask her to, and when I should ask her. Okay no problem. I couldn’t ask AJ anything else, or I’d seem desperate, so I’ll go to the other guys. Yeah that’ll work.

Let’s see. I have three more things to figure out, and one, two, oh perfect three more Backstreet Boys. Probably shoulda been able to do the math a little faster, but whatever. Okay, well Howie’s room is closest so I guess I’ll start there.

Haley Narrating

I called Melissa even though she was probably still asleep. After she answered I felt kinda bad considering she didn’t even speak. It was more like a growl.

“Melissa?”

“Uh.”

“I need to talk to you. Can I come to your room?”

“Uh huh.”

“Thanks. I’ll be right over.” I decided to get dressed first and give Melissa a few more minutes to wake up. I threw on cheerleading clothes and ran out the door and down the hall. I banged on Melissa’s door until she came and let me in. She shut the door and lay back in bed.

“Melissa I have to tell you something, but you can’t tell anyone else, especially Danielle, because I don’t really need the entire cheerleading community to know what I have to say.”

“Okay.” Wow she was practically asleep again. Oh well, I was here now.

“Last night when we were leaving that club Nick almost kissed me.”

“WHAT?!?!?!” Wow I didn’t know it would get that big of a reaction. She leapt out of bed and all the sheets fell onto the floor. Except the one wrapped around her foot. That she tripped over for a while until she managed to get it off. “Are you serious?”

“No I’m making this all up to get you out of bed. Of course I’m being serious!”

“Holy shit!!”

“Do that for another 12 hours and you might be about where I am right now.”

“Wait, you said he almost kissed you. Why didn’t he?”

“Right as we were about to kiss Jen leaned out the window and screamed Haley we’re ready to go now!!! Loud enough for everyone in the state of New York to hear.”

“I’ll kill her Haley. I swear just say the word and I’ll do it.”

“No, no it’s better this way. It would only make things confusing. And it’s not like it would last anyway.”

“I’ll still hurt her a little. And Danielle could help me.” That was why I loved Melissa. She’d do anything for me. And she had always hated *NSync. That helped too. She didn’t even switch when Danielle had decided she liked *NSync for those two weeks that she did. Then she’d actually seen a picture of what Justin really looked like and she swore off all men for 3 months.

“No. And you can’t tell anyone at least until we go home.”

“Oh come on. I can’t wait until tomorrow night.”

“Well you have to. And now that we’ve wasted fifteen minutes I only have half an hour to get to their hotel.”

”Why are you going to their hotel?”

“Their security found a jacket and they want to know if it’s one of ours. AJ called and the only way he could describe it was that it was black with two sleeves.”

“Danielle has one like that.”

“And so does every other girl on the planet. But I don’t care about that right now. You have to help me figure out what to say if I see Nick.”

“You wait and see what he says first. Besides, if he’s not interested he won’t come and talk to you at all, and if he is interested in you he’ll come and talk first.”

“Okay, but what if he just wants sex?”

“Then you give him sex.”

“I do have some morals here Melissa.”

“When the hot Backstreet Boys is involved, you say fuck the morals. Hell, I would. Have you seen him? He is fucking hot.”

“I know.”

Nick Narrating

“Howie,” I asked, “I need your help.”

“With what?”

“Well, I have this friend, Oh fuck that. I wanna ask Haley out, but I almost kissed her last night so that sort of complicated things a little bit, and she’s coming over in half an hour to pick up a jacket that someone left at our show.”

“Okay, what do you need my help with?”

“When should I ask her?”

“Today, when she comes over.”

“Is that why you never get laid Howie? Too eager?”

“Do you want my help or not jackass?”

“No, I do. I’m sorry.”

“No you’re not.”

“No, you’re right I’m not.”

“I do not know how I’ve put up with you for twelve years.”

“Well, you hardly ever spoke to me until I was fifteen, so it’s more like ten years.”

“I didn’t know what to say! I was afraid I’d swear in front of you or something.”

“I was thirteen and fourteen not six!”

“Okay, okay. Can we get back on track here?”

“Sure. When should I take her out?”

“Today.”

“Again with the eagerness Howie. I swear if you weren’t a lost cause I’d give you some tips. But you know, if you don’t use it you lose it, so that would be a waste of my time.”

“Nick I swear I’m gonna,”

“Okay, fine, what time?”

“Well, we have a meeting at 10:45. That should last until about 12:30. Then we have our show, and you need to be there at 5, so maybe 1.”

“Okay. Thanks Howie.”

“Anytime.” Okay, next thing. I had to figure out where we should go. Kevin would probably be best at that. I got to his room and forced myself to knock on the door. I couldn’t believe I needed this much help getting a girl.

“Kevin, can I come in?”

“Sure.”

“I need your help.”

“With what?”

“Oh my God, you’ve known me for twelve years now. You should just know.”

“Well, I’m sorry man. As soon as I learn to read minds I’ll be sure to get back to you.”

“Oh my God, you talk so slow. I mean spit it out!”

“Nick, what’s your problem?”

“Nothing!”

“Then what the fuck do you want?”

“I wanna ask Haley out. But I don’t know where to go.”

“Well, you should’ve just said that. I can help you there.”

“Okay, well, where should we go?”

“Well, you could go for a walk.”

“Good idea, and I’ll tie a sweater around my neck and join the cheerleading team.”

“Fine. What about a museum?”

“Would you like to hear my comment about that or just give me another suggestion?”

“Actually, I’d like to hear your smart ass comment.”

“Well, I don’t have one. I just figured you wouldn’t wanna hear it, and that made me sound better so you know.”

“Yeah, okay. You could go to a movie, or a restaurant.”

“A restaurant. Traditional, I like it. Thanks man.”

“No problem.”

One room left and I had fifteen minutes until she came. I practically ran to Brian’s door and knocked. He let me in and sat back down and read the newspaper.

“Why are you reading the newspaper?”

“Oh, I’m fine. And the wife and kid are out shopping thanks for asking.”

“Brian, seriously I need your help.”

“With what?” Why did everyone keep asking that? And he was still reading the newspaper.

“I want to ask Haley out.” Oh, wow that made him put down his newspaper. I’m so glad my pathetic love life was more important than world news.

“Since when do you need help with girls?”

“Would you just tell me what to say?”

“Well, hello would be a good start.”

“Then what?”

“What do you usually say?”

“That’s usually about as far as I get.”

“What do you mean?”

“Then things usually start unzipping.”

“Oh, right. Then just ask her what she’s doing later.

“And just ignore last night?”

“What happened last night?”

“Well, after the show I went to a club and Haley was there with her friends. So I hung out with them. When we decided to leave she dropped her keys. Her friends were drunk so they just kept right on walking so I bent over to pick them up. And then I have no idea why, but I tried to kiss her. But then Jen screamed that they were ready to go and Haley just left.”

“Oh, wow. Okay, apologize for last night, see what she says, and then ask what she’s doing.”

“Okay.” I got up and walked to the door terrified that she would just say yeah, you dumbfuck. Why the hell did you try to kiss me? I’m way too good for you.

“Brian?”

“Yeah?”

“What if she says no?”

“Don’t let her.”

“Okay.”

Haley Narrating

Well, it was time for me to leave, or I’d be late so I just walked really slow. I seemed to get there unusually fast though. I walked in and luckily saw AJ across the room. He started walking over to me, and I quickly looked around the room to see if Nick was there. I spotted him in the corner and prayed that he wouldn’t see me. Why was I so afraid to face him?

“Hey, Haley.”

“Hey. Um, do you have the jacket?”

“No.”

“Okay,”

“I left it in my room. I’ll go get it now.”

“Okay.” He walked towards the elevator and Nick walked over to me. Holy shit. What the hell do I say? Is it possible to have a one sided conversation?

“Hi Haley.”

“Hi.”

“Look, I’m really sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to,”

“Oh, don’t worry about it.”

Nick Narrating

Good because I totally did mean to. I just couldn’t say that.

“Okay, well I was just wondering what you were doing later.”

“Nothing really.”

“Good cause,” I can’t believe I’m doing this. “I was thinking, maybe we could go to lunch today.”

Please say yes. Please.
