CHAPTER 7

Haley Narrating

OH MY GOD! Nick fucking Carter just asked me out on a fucking date. Do I say yes? I mean, I obviously want to say yes, but it will just make things complicated.

“Well, I don’t know if that would be a good idea.” Okay. That was the truth.

“Come on,” he said.

“I don’t want things to get awkward.”

“Do you really think they won’t be awkward after this?”

“Good point.”

“I know. So when should I pick you up?”

“You know I never said yes.”

“I was hoping you wouldn’t realize that. But were you really going to say no?”

“Probably not.”

“I’ll be at your hotel room at 1.”

“O-o-okay.” Holy shit. I totally should have said no. Then he walked over to Brian and told him something probably about me. I couldn’t believe that in three hours I would be on a date with a Backstreet Boy.

Another ten minutes later AJ finally came back with the jacket.

“What the hell were you doing up there AJ?”

“Well, see I kinda misplaced the jacket a little bit.”

“How do you misplace something a little bit?”

“Okay, I lost it and I had to look through the entire room before I found it okay?”

“You could’ve just said you lost it.”

“Well, maybe I didn’t want you to know I lost it because it seemed really stupid.” How did we end up arguing? I would have said the same thing.

“Okay fine. Can I just see the jacket?” He handed it to me and I looked at the tag. “This is a youth medium. You had to know none of us could fit into this. Danielle wouldn’t even be able to get one boob into this.” He didn’t even say anything. He just shrugged.

“Well, thanks anyway.” I said. I started to walk towards the doors when something occurred to me. “AJ?”

“Yeah?”

“You knew about this didn’t you?”

“About what?”

“Bullshit. You knew!”

“Don’t tell him you figured out his master plan. He likes to think he’s clever. And if you’re going to be dating him you should get used to figuring out his surprises before thy happen. He’s not very good at hiding things.”

“Okay. Bye AJ.”

“See ya later.”

“Wait. How did you know I said yes to him?”

“Were you really gonna say no?”

“That’s exactly what he said.” I had no idea what to do next so I just walked out. The next thing I had to do was call Melissa. She answered after one ring.

“Haley?”

“Nick asked me out.”

“Ah! I knew it!”

“How did you know?”

“The Backstreet Boys don’t care if someone left their jacket at one of their shows. They would never bother with giving it back.”

“I never even thought of that.”

“Well, you should’ve. You’re the smart one.”

“Okay. Whatever. I need you to wake everyone else up and get lots of M&M’s.”

“Why M&M’s?”

“Universal cure for hangovers. I’m going to need a lot of help getting ready.”

“Why, when are you going out?”

“1:00.”

“Today?”

“Yes.”

“Shit. I’m waking Danielle now.”

Nick Narrating

I can’t believe she said yes. I don’t know what I would have done if she had said no. My hand would probably have fallen off from overuse. Gee, Nick what happened to your hand? Oh, well see I thought this girl was really hot, but she totally rejected me so I jerked off 24-7. I don’t think Kevin would approve of that answer.

I had already made reservations at Kevin’s favorite restaurant for 1:15. Shit should I have told her it was sort of fancy? What if she comes in jeans? It would be my fault too. I had to tell her. But how was I going to do that? Oh, right. It’s 2005. People have cell phones. Perfect. I got mine out and dialed her number.

“Hello?”

“Haley. It’s Nick.”

“Hi.”

“I just realized I never told you that the restaurant is kinda fancy.”

“Okay.”

“Is that okay with you?” Shit. I never even thought about what she’d like. “Cause if it’s not I can change it.”

“No. It’s great.”

“Good. Okay bye.” Okay. That was dealt with.

Haley Narrating

Shit. Okay. I had to figure out what to wear. And what to do with my hair. I almost ran back to my hotel so I would have time to buy something new since my entire wardrobe consisted of cheerleading clothes. I went to my room to find Melissa, Jen, and Danielle sitting on my bed eating M&M’s.

“Haley,” Danielle started, “What the hell is going on. Mel wouldn’t tell us anything. She said you should tell us.”

“Nick just asked me out.”

“OH MY GOD!!! I TOLD YOU HE LIKED YOU!” Now she was jumping up and down like a 12 year old. “OW, hangover. I need the M&M’s NOW.”

“We’re going to a fancy restaurant today at 1, and I have no idea what to wear or anything.”

“Call Jess.” Said Melissa. “It’ll be slutty, but it’ll be a start.”

“Yeah,” said Danielle, “then we’ll just tone it down like eighty slut notches.”

“Slut notches?” I asked.

“Don’t you know the slut scale? You have 1 being the least slutty and 20 being the sluttiest. Like, I would be about a 15, Jen is probably an 11, Mel would be about a 9, and you would be like a 7.”

“So what’s Jess?”

“About a 42.”

“Okay, we’ll call Jess, but I’m not promising to wear anything she says. It’ll just be ideas.”

“Fine.” Danielle said. “I’ll call her.” She even put it on speaker phone so we could all hear what she said.

“Hello?”

“Jess, it’s Danielle. I’m taking a poll, and I was wondering what you would wear to go out to lunch on a date at a fancy restaurant.”

“Well, definitely something low cut. Oh, probably that pink sweater I have that’s cut about to the middle of my boobs that’s sorta see-through. And that black miniskirt that shows most of my underwear, except that time when I didn’t wear any underwear.”

“Okay. Thanks Jess. I have to go now.” She hung up and all four of us started laughing hysterically. After another ten minutes of making fun of Jess I realized how little time we had.

“Guys,” I said, “we have to figure this stuff out now because we have two and a half hours to get it all done.”

“Get in the car. I’ll drive to the mall.” Melissa said. Fifteen minutes later we were at the mall. Melissa was the first one to come up with a plan. “Me and Jen will go together and Haley and Danielle will go together. We’ll meet back here in an hour. We’ll buy everything good and take back anything Haley doesn’t wear. And everyone be thinking about what she should do with her hair and stuff while you shop.”

We all agreed and practically ran to stores. I don’t know what I would do if it wasn’t for my friends. Danielle pulled me into store after store making me try on every piece of clothing with the exception of pink see-through sweaters and black miniskirts.

Melissa Narrating

“Jen, can you believe Nick asked Haley out?”

“Yes and no. I mean, obviously it’s sort of unbelievable, but did you see the way he acted around her during the meetings?”

“I know. Obviously he doesn’t hide a crush very well.”

“I’m just worried he’ll hurt her. I mean, he’s a total man whore.”

“Oh, I know. But maybe people can change.”

“I hope so. Or Jeff would personally kill him.”

“Definitely. Wait, does Jeff know? We have to tell him. He’s still in the city right? So if Nick’s an asshole he can go beat him up. That way Danielle wouldn’t have to. Although she probably would even if Jeff beat him up too. She’d do anything for Haley.”

“Yeah. We all would. But let’s ask Haley if she want us to tell him. Maybe she wants to see how today goes.”

“You’re right.”

“I’m always right. Oh, what about this shirt?”

Danielle Narrating

We had ten minutes before we had to meet Jen and Melissa and we’d only found one skirt. I was really hoping Jen or Mel had found something or Haley was going to have to go on the date naked. Although Nick would probably like that. It might save some time, only needing to undress one of them. Except Haley wouldn’t go for that on the first date. I would, but Haley wouldn’t.

“Haley, hurry up we’re already late.”

“I’m coming.” When we got there we were late. But we just ran to the car and drove back towards the hotel. Haley tried everything on and we made her wear a light blue tank top with a black skirt (not a miniskirt though. We’d never think of those the same way again). It didn’t matter to me anyway. I didn’t wear skirts except at cheerleading, but whatever.

Melissa told Haley to leave her hair down, but Jen wanted her to put it up. I totally hated being a girl. There was way to much involved. Can’t we just wear cheerleading clothes everywhere? You know shorts and a T-shirt? That would make my life so much easier.

“Just leave your fucking hair down and be done with it.” I finally said. I was actually surprised she listened to me. Then I threw the clothes to her and made her put them on. While she was getting dressed I got out the make-up she needed to wear. I’d already spent over two hours getting her ready, and I was getting annoyed. Don’t get me wrong. I love Haley to death, but there comes a point where you need to say fuck it and just go for it.

Nick Narrating

It was 12:45. I had been a fucking wreck throughout the entire meeting. And then every time I’d start to get nervous or something I’d feel like a total dumbfuck because I was the guy. I wasn’t supposed to be nervous. And I was a Backstreet Boy. I was supposed to get all the girls. Hell, I did get all the girls.

Oh, crap. If I was gonna start dating Haley I was probably gonna have to stop sleeping with everything that moves huh? Damn, I’d never even thought of that. Oh well, you do what you gotta do. Besides, Haley was so freakin’ hot it shouldn’t matter. I don’t know why I was getting so worried about this. It was one date. I didn’t even know if we’d end up on a second date. Sure I hoped we would but you never know.

I figured I should head over to her hotel so I wouldn’t be late. It seemed like the longest limo ride ever. I don’t know why I had to have security. There would be no fans there. They all knew which hotel we were staying at and there hadn’t even been any there when I’d left. I don’t know how or why, but I didn’t care. I didn’t want Haley to have to deal with them on our first date.

I barely waited for the limo to stop before I practically jumped out. I went to the elevator and waited for what seemed like forty minutes before it finally came. When it did I got on and punched Haley’s floor four or five times just to make sure it worked. I guess the bright white light wasn’t enough of a clue for me. As soon as I got to her floor I saw Danielle, Melissa, and Jen coming out of Haley’s room. They must have been helping her get ready.

“Hey, Nick.” Danielle said.

“Hi.”

Jen and Melissa walked onto the elevator, but Danielle said, “I’ll be there in a minute guys.” When the elevator was gone she started talking to me. “Nick I swear to God if you hurt her I will find a way through your security and I will physically hurt you. And not just a little either. It will hurt. And I’ll get Haley’s brother too. Now I don’t care how serious or not serious this all ends up. Just don’t hurt her.”

Holy shit. “O-okay. I didn’t plan to hurt her.”

“Okay. Sorry for the intimidation there. I’ve always been that way. I’d play sports in high school, and I used to get carded all the time. Well, anyway, have fun now.”

She was fucking crazy. But it was funny. Sort of. Except for the physical pain part.

“Oh, Nick?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re not gonna like sue me or anything for threatening you right?”

“Wasn’t planning on it.”

“Thanks. Just checking.” And with that she ran down the stairs. Now I was late.

I knocked on the door and waited for her to answer. When she did I didn’t even know what to say. She looked great. I couldn’t get over how great she looked. So I said the first thing that came to mind other than holy fuck.

“You look great.” Wow. Real original Carter. That made you seem super intelligent. Wow, remind me never to say upper because it sounded really gay. Except most of the thoughts in my head weren’t gay. At all.

“Thanks.”

“Well, I ran into your friends on the way here. That’s why I’m a few minutes late.”

“Oh my God, I’m really sorry. I know they’re totally crazy. Did you talk to any of them?”

“I had a quick conversation with Danielle. She just said that-”

“No, I have a pretty good idea as to what she said. You’re not gonna like sue her or anything right?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“So, you ready to go?”

“Yeah. Definitely.” Holy shit she was so hot.
