Chapter 16

Cass closed her eyes, and turned around. Her head was spinning and her heart was beating faster than the rhythm of the music on the dance floor. She was afraid to look at Nick again, so she walked out of the room and back to the staff room. She was standing in the middle of the room, when she heard someone coming up behind her.
“That was fast.” Mike said.
Cassidy took a deep breath, put a fake smile on her face and turned to face him.
“There were so many people out there that I could hardly move around.” She said, which was true, but of course not the main reason why she was back so fast.
“Oh, well. Let’s get you started then, shall we?”
Cassidy nodded as Mike continued.
“I’ll give you a few minutes to change into your working outfit. There’s a toilet over there. You can change in there. I’ll just wait for you here.”
Cassidy did as he said, and a few minutes later, she was back, and ready to start. She was wearing a black short skirt and a black top that had a picture of a white spider web on the front and the word “Spider” written on the back. She looked good, although she didn’t seem to be aware of that herself.
“Ok,” Mike said, clapping his hands together, “let’s get you started. First I want you to take out some empty bottles form the bar. There is a container across the street from the main entrance. You can throw everything in there. When you have done that, I want you to start cleaning tables.”
Cassidy nodded again, and went to do what she had been told.

Nick felt Sam’s hand moving up his thigh and closer to his private area.
Suddenly he felt as is someone had just knocked some sense into him, and he realized that what he was doing was wrong. He removed her hand and broke away from the kiss.
“I can’t do this.” He said, standing up. “I need some fresh air.”
He was about to walk away, when she grabbed his arm and held him back.
“I’ll come with you.” She said, looking at him seductively.
Nick shook his head. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea.” He pulled himself out of her grip, and walked away leaving her by the bar with a frustrated look on her face.

The fresh air outside was uplifting, and Nick was soon feeling a lot better. The heavy air inside the club had made him feel more drunk than he actually was, but after a few minutes outside, his mind was clearer and he could think straight. He lit a cigarette and leaned against the cold brick wall. Cass entered his mind again, and he spent the next minutes thinking about her, and where she might be. If he only knew her full name, or where she lived, he could have been with her right now, instead of this place where he didn’t even want to be. Nick dropped the cigarette to the ground, stepped on it, and turned around to get back inside. He took one step forward when he suddenly walked straight into someone.

“Ouch…”
“Oh, I’m so sorry, are you alright?” He said, rubbing his right arm. He looked down at the other person, and looked straight into a pair of familiar green eyes.
“Cass?” He froze.
Neither of them said anything for a few seconds. Both were surprised to see the other there, Nick a bit more than Cass.
“Hello… Nick.” She said as the silence between them got more and more uncomfortable.
Nick continued to look at her, as of he still didn’t believe she was standing right in front of him. After spending so many hours searching for her, she was right there.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
“I work here.” Cass couldn’t help but sound angry and bitter.
Nick frowned. “I’ve never seen you here before.”
“I’m new.”
Cass wanted more than anything to get back inside. She didn’t want to talk to him after what she had witnessed earlier. But still, there was something about him that held her back. She looked down, trying to avoid looking into his eyes.
“I’ve been looking for you, you know.” Nick said, his voice sounded almost sad.
Cass didn’t respond.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving?” Nick continued.
She shrugged, still looking down at her feet. Nick could sense that something was wrong, but he was afraid to ask. He didn’t want to scare her away, now that she was finally there.
“Cass.” He lifted her head with his thumb, forcing her to look at him. “Are you ok?”
“I’m fine.” She said, almost too sudden. Lying to him was so hard. She could see in his eyes that he didn’t believe her, and she looked down again to stop herself from feeling guilty.
“I have to go, Nick. I have to get back to work.” She said firmly. She turned around and started walking towards the entrance.
“Wait, Cass. At least let me give you my phone number.” Nick walked up to her. Cass sighted. ‘This is when you say no, Cass’ she said to herself.
Instead, she nodded.
Nick handed her a piece of paper with his number written on it.
“Call me of you need to talk, ok?” He looked at her, trying to see what she was thinking, but her face was blank. She put the piece of paper in her pocket, and walked away.

Later that night, Cass was lying in bed thinking about her encounter with Nick. She didn’t know why, but she was so mad at him. After she had left him outside, she had gone back to work. She had seen him leave with his friends only a few moments later, glancing at her as he walked away. She had spent the rest of the night thinking about him, his number burning in her pocket.

Seeing him with that girl had really affected her.
‘He’s just like everybody else I have ever met’ she thought. She was so disappointed in him, because she was really starting to convince herself that he was different. Now she knew she had been wrong. The thing that bothered her the most was that fact that she had gotten so affected by the fact that he had made out with that girl. She didn’t want to care, but she did, and that confused her more than anything.

She closed her eyes to try and sleep, but his face kept haunting her. Images from his visits at the hospital appeared, and she couldn’t help but smile as she thought about things he had said that had made her laugh. Cassidy sighted. ‘What am I going to do?” She whispered to herself.
